IT’S the season for merrymaking with plenty to eat and drink. As a result, bags of rice are everywhere. Some unscrupulous Nigerians, however, may be cashing in on increase in demand, pushing out consumers products from questionable sources.

Investigation by The Guardian last week revealed that some smart ‘entrepreneurs’ might be helping themselves to grains of rice discarded at Abonema wharf in Rivers State. Having collected these, they head to some secret location where the product is cleaned up and repackaged in branded bags.
About seven youths, all from a section of the country, were sighted in an uncompleted building along Ikwere road in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, busy refilling empty rice bags with the stuff.

Glad that a prospective buyer had come, a man who appeared to be in charge, explained that the boys were merely removing dust from the grains. Upon further interrogation, he modified his position, saying the rice was being transferred to the bags for use as livestock feed. As probing continued, the youths working at the ‘rice company’ disappeared.
Some Port Harcourt residents who commented on the matter, described it as deeply worrying, adding that the harsh economic situation in the country might be pushing some people into making dishonest living. They expressed concern over high price of the commodity, suggesting it might have made some Nigerians opt for doubtful versions of the product. “Things are becoming worse day by day, so why would some Nigerians not compromise standards,” said Mrs. Clarina Michael.
But Mr. Sunny Finebone, a civil servant, with the Ministry of Agriculture, described the action of the ‘rice producers’ as disgusting, saying no matter the economic adversity, it lacks justification. “It is sheer wickedness, and the authorities must nip it in the bud,” he said.
A bag of rice, which used to sell for N9,500-N10,000 now costs N12,000-N14,000. A visit to the Mile One market showed that a cup of rice, formerly N50, now sells for N60-N70.
Rice seller, Mr. Onyekachi Henry, lamented that despite buying the product from distributors at a high price, rise in cost of transportation, occasioned by the ongoing fuel scarcity, continues to hurt business.

Niger Delta militants known as ex agitators met on Thursday concerning the invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to one of their leaders Government Tompolo.

In a press statement which was signed by a foremost militant Mr. Egbesu Mightier Fraternity, the group warned the Federal Government will ‘get what they want’ should they continue to toe the path of harassing their leaders.

They issued a cease and desist order threatening Nigeria’s strategic oil interests and hinting that any attacks on Oil facilities will make things worse for Nigeria in the light of the recent decline in oil prices.

“With oil prices slipping below 40 dollars a barrel, if the government of President Buhari is willing, we will help to reduce its price of barrel to 15 dollars.

Nigeria will collapse under the watch of All Progressive Congress (APC) and President
Muhammadu Buhari as we will do everything necessary to actualize the American prediction“.

“The silence in the region is a legacy of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua should not be thrown away on the altar of vindictiveness. The government should thread with caution and wisdom by ensuring that anything capable of provoking anger in the region is avoided or else every region shall maintain their respective resources because the money belongs to the people of the region and not APC and Buhari government“.

A panel of Nigeria’s Court of Appeal in Abuja has sacked Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom State. In delivering its final ruling on the conduct of the governorship election in Akwa Ibom, the five-member panel upheld the petition of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), agreeing that the election of Governor Emmanuel Udom of the People’s Democratic Party did not conform to the electoral act.

The court, therefore annulled the election, first re-asserting the importance of card readers and afirming that the election was marred by over-voting. The court denied all releiefs sought by the candidate of the PDP and granted the reliefs sought by the governorship candidate of the APC, Umana Okon Umana, asking for the cancellation of the election. The Court ordered a rerun of the election across the state within 90 days.

Mr. Udom is expected to appeal today’s verdict to the Supreme Court for a final decision.

Chelsea have sacked manager Jose Mourinho seven months after he led them to the Premier League title.

The 52-year-old Portuguese had been in his second spell at the club, taking charge in June 2013.

Chelsea finished eight points clear last season and also won the League Cup, but have endured a terrible start to their defence, losing nine of their 16 league games so far.

Mourinho's final match was Monday's 2-1 defeat at leaders Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola, Guus Hiddink, Brendan Rodgers and Juande Ramos have all been touted as possible successors

He leaves with Chelsea just a point off the relegation zone and 20 points behind Leicester.

Champions League qualification via one of the top four spots in the Premier League looks almost impossible.

However, the Blues are through to the last 16 of European football's biggest club competition, where they will face French champions Paris St-Germain in February and March.

Mourinho only signed a new four-year contract on 7 August and is Chelsea's most successful manager.

He won three Premier League titles, two of those in his first spell between 2004 and 2007.

The Portuguese has also won the FA Cup, in 2007, and the League Cup three times - in 2005, 2007 and 2015.

It has not only gone wrong in the Premier League for Mourinho, he has also had his issues off the pitch.

A 2-2 draw with Swansea on 8 August was overshadowed by a fallout with his medical team, in particular club doctor Eva Carneiro.

Carneiro had her role downgraded after Mourinho said his medical staff were "naive" for running onto the pitch to treat attacking midfielder Eden Hazard.

Mourinho also received a suspended stadium ban and £50,000 fine for claiming referees were "afraid" to award his team penalties in a 3-1 home loss to Southampton in October.

He subsequently had to serve a one-match stadium ban and pay a £40,000 fine for his behaviour during a 2-1 defeat by West Ham, when he spoke to referee Jon Moss at half-time.

I wonder why most pple throw the 'I' away.
For example: 'I am eating' shouldn't be 'am eating' cos it wouldn't make sense if u shorten 'she is eating' to 'is eating'
