The station quoted Fatai Owoseni, commissioner of police in Lagos, as saying the body was recovered by the Marine Police at the Onikan end of the lagoon. Kehinde Adebayo, spokesman of the Lagos State Management Emergency Agency (LASEMA), told TheCable on Tuesday afternoon that officials of the agency were yet to confirm if the body recovered was that of Orji. “We have sent for the family, they have to confirm the body before we issue a statement,” he told TheCable. www.thecable.ng as the source. |
Some civil society organisations (CSOs) in Onitsha, Anambra state, staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Hameed Ali, comptroller general of the Nigeria customs service (NCS). Osazee Edigin, public relations officer of Edo civil society organisations, said civil society groups from Edo, were duly represented at the protest. “Protest for the sack of Customs boss ongoing in Onitsha by coalition of civil society groups in Nigeria. Edo Civil Society Organizations duly represented,” Edigin wrote via Facebook. The customs boss has been in the eye of the storm, following requests of the senate that he appears in uniform. This happened after the introduction of a controversial customs duty on vehicles. NCS has since reversed the new policy, but Ali insists on not appearing before the senate on Wednesday, adding that he was seeking legal counsel. “May I respectfully refer to your letter dated 9 March and inform Your Excellency that the decision on payment of customs duties by vehicle owners who do not have them as prescribed by law is currently being reviewed. The goal of the review is to take a broad additional input from the stakeholders and the public. I will welcome the opportunity to avail the senate of our findings,” Ali wrote. “Regarding to wearing of uniform, I wish to advice that the senate avails itself of the legal basis of its decision to compel me to wear uniform. I am similarly taking legal advice on this issue so that both the senate and I will operate within the proper legal framework.” He has been asked to show up at the senate on Thursday, unfailingly. www.thecable.ng as the source.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano state, has alleged that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Abdullahi Ganduje, incumbent governor of Kano, are plotting to float a new party ahead of the 2019 elections. Kwankwaso also alleged that both men, who are top chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), have been “hobnobbing” with the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The lawmaker said Ganduje had never hidden his disdain for the leadership style of the APC, but has been marking time. “It has been brought to our attention that Governor Ganduje of Kano state has been working with the Makarfi faction of the PDP and other politicians of northern extraction, and from what we know, they are aspiring to float a new party, the APDP,” Kwankwaso said in a statement issued on his behalf by Suleiman Bichi, former secretary to the government of Kano. “It is a well-known fact that Governor Ganduje is not happy with the APC’s style of leadership and its commitment to stand on the side of the truth “This is evident in the letter the national leadership of the APC sent to Kano, reaffirming Umar Doguwa as the substantive chairman of the party as against the government’s imposed leadership of an adviser to the governor who is even an outsider to the leadership of the party, and is against the party constitution.” Kwankwaso also denied reports that he was considering leaving the APC. “To set the record straight, we have to understand that these lies originated from Musa Iliyasu Kwankwaso, who bears no allegiance to Senator Kwankwaso,” the statement read. “Musa Iliyasu worked with Malam Shekarau (also a fromer governor of Kano) as commissioner for local governments and still stands in as his spokesperson. “Also, it is an open secret that Governor Ganduje and Malam Shekarau have pitched tent against Senator Kwankwaso, hence, there is no way, Musa Iliyasu, even though he comes from the same town with Senator Kwankwaso could speak for the distinguished senator. Not on a matter like this. “On this note, I want to affirm that Senator Kwankwaso is still in the APC, and as is his trademark, he is loyal to any course he believes in. Such is the case with the APC.” Paul Ibe, spokesman of Abubakar, could not be reached for comments, as his telephone line was switched off, but Muhammad Garba, Kano commissioner of information, denied the allegation. Garba said his principal remains a committed member of the ruling party. “As the leader of the party in the state, the governor does not want to lose a member, not to talk of leaving to another party,” he told TheCable. “If Kwankwaso and his supporters are thinking along that line, our advice to them is to remain in the party. “The APC is on ground in Kano and Nigeria, so where is he going? They just planted that report outside there.” Follow us on twitter @thecableng Copyright 2017 TheCable. Senate President Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives, are scheduled to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Wednesday. A source confirmed this to TheCable. Bamikole Omisore, media aide of the senate president, told TheCable that he was already in London with Saraki, but he did not give details of the meeting with Buhari. However, TheCable learnt that it will take place Wednesday evening. Other members of the legislature that are expected to meet with the president are Yusuf Lasun, deputy speaker, and Ahmed Lawan, senate leader. TheCable understands that Dogara is still on his way to London. This is coming a few days after Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Bisi Akande, former governor of Osun state, paid the president a visit. Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun state governor, and Daisy Danjuma had also visited the president, who is on vacation in the UK. Buhari transferred power to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo before he left for the UK. He was scheduled to return to the country on Sunday – at the end of his 10-day vacation which began on January 19 – but he extended the time indefinitely, citing advice from his doctor that he should wait to get his test results as the reason for his decision. Last Wednesday, Saraki announced on Twitter that he spoke with the president and that he was in high spirits. Though he did not give a hint that he would visit him in London. MultiChoice Nigeria, leading video entertainment provider responsible for DStv, says Nigerians can now suspend their subscription while they are away from home. MultiChoice Nigeria said the new package is in line with its commitment to better service delivery for all its subscribers. In a statement released on Wednesday, the company said greater attention is being paid to issues affecting subscribers’ enjoyment of DStv services. Notable among these are signal loss, subscription payment and reconnection, customer care services, Free-to-Air channels and hardware related issues. The company explained that customers now have the option of suspending their accounts while they are away from home. It said this will be upon request and a 48-hour notice that the account be suspended for a fixed period between seven to 14 days twice yearly. “We put our customers first at all times and hold them in high very esteem,” the statement read. “We are committed to delivering world-class service to our customers and proud to say we are the first video entertainment company to implement new subscriber initiatives requested by the Consumer Protection Council (CPC). “Over the past year, we have worked closely with the CPC to identify our customers’ areas of need and made a commitment towards implementing solutions that will resonate with our customers and lead to improved service.” On the issue of customer care services, MultiChoice explained that the call centre hours have been extended to accommodate more queries. “Call centre operating hours are now 8am to 9pm on Saturdays, Sunday and public holidays. In addition, toll free numbers have been introduced on major network providers”, MultiChoice stated. “The toll free lines are 09090630333 for Etisalat, 07080630333 for Airtel, 08113630333 for Glo and 08149860333 for MTN. Rauf Aregbesola, governor of Osun state, on Wednesday said the just-concluded Ramadan fast had shown that people can survive under any circumstance. Speaking in Osogbo after the Eid-el-Fitr prayers, Aregbesola called for tolerance and understanding of Nigerians to move the country forward. He asked the people to apply the Ramadan experience to different areas of their lives. “We thank Almighty Allah for permitting us to survive the fasting,” he said. “We want to tell our people that if we can endure the 30 days Ramadan hunger, we can endure anything. “Let us use the experience of the Ramadan to re-fashion our lives, be tolerant, persevering and live a life that will add value to our community, state and nation. “Nigeria needs peace for development and Nigerians must strive for peace as we learn to tolerate and understand one another for harmonious relationships. “If we live harmoniously, we will have a better society and development will be assured.” Sherifat, wife of the governor, equally admonished Muslims to sustain abstinence from sins, just as they did during Ramadan. Urged them to sustain the tempo, she said abstaining from sin should not be limited to the Ramadan period alone . Musa Animashaun, chief imam of Osogbo, who led the prayers, urged Muslims to shun all forms of vices. He reminded them that all human beings would eventually leave “this sinful world”, adding that living a life of holiness is the only way to get to heaven. He prayed for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and the peace of the state and the country. https://www.thecable.ng/aregbesola-tells-osun-people-30-days-of-ramadan-hunger-showed-that-we-can-endure-anything
