Education / FUTA Website Hacked By Indonesian Hacking Group by matrixx9(m): 10:42am On Nov 06, 2016

A quick check through FUTA's website (www.futa.edu.ng)
shows that the website has been defaced by an Indonesian
hacking group (Indonesian Code Party) which has been
linked to the hack of several websites on the Internet.

Possible Cause Of The Hack
1.FUTA's website runs on just PHP and SQL on an
Apache Server. This can easily be exploited by any hacker.

2.Their ICT Team Failed To Apply Patches and Updates To
The School Website

Many webmasters know how vulnerable websites based on
PHP and SQL can be.I must say that It's really appalling
for a Federal University to use an outdated and buggy
CMS.

The successful defacement and hack of the FUTA
website depends on the exploit used by these hackers . It
does not necessary mean that the hackers connected to
the database directly although I'm not ruling out the
possibility .

The hackers might first check the server to find what the
app stack is (Programming Languages,
Database, CMS, OS).

Looking at HTML, Javascript code, URL pattern, hitting
standard URL's of admin pages & port scanning helps a
lot.

Once this is done, he or she knows which exploits to try.
With CMSes, exploits become public very fast. Security
patches are made available just as fast. If they regularly
apply security patches they'll be OK. Other
than that CMSes are vulnerable mostly due to bad
configuration, or poor password choice.

Custom applications are more vulnerable to loop holes in
code. There are many vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

1. Database fields become exposed to modification
because the programmer choose to simply persist the
entire object received from the user instead of only
picking those fields that the user was allowed to
modify from that page.

2. Having ajax methods such as getObject(int objectid)
in Javascript with no corresponding validation on
server side to find whether the requested object
should be accessible to the current user.

These seemingly lame coding blunders are surprisingly
very common in custom built applications.

Possible Solution
1.Scan Website Server for Vulnerabilities With Nikto On
Linux and install patch/ fixes for every vulnerability
2.Change Website CMS To Joomla

Phones / How To Connect Your Smartphone To Your Smart TV by matrixx9(m): 7:22am On Oct 28, 2016
It's very easy to cast your smartphone display to your TV
via WiFi or by using cables.

Most of the main and popular Smart TV manufacturers like
LG, Samsung, Sony and Panasonic provide features for
users to connect tablets and smartphones to their TV via
Wi-Fi or cables .

For instance, Samsung and Sony’s new Smart TV models
have a ‘screen mirroring’ feature that lets you display
whatever is on your phone screen. You can transfer videos, photos, and also stream YouTube to your Smart TV with your tablet and smartphone. While the YouTube application for Android can be connected easily to a television through the streaming icon, displaying multimedia like videos and photos takes a little more effort.

You can use iMediaShare to connect to your Smart TV. It
allows you to transfer music, photos, and videos from your Android Smartphone . With the iMediaShare app, you can select
any file type and also play videos serially on your Smart
TV.

You can also use HDMI cables to connect your phone to
your Smart TV.The High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable is the ultimate interface standard. Most Flat-screen TV's
come with a HDMI port. HDMI can easily accommodate
HD videos and audio simultaneously, letting you connect your smartphone without bothering about watching a HD movie but making it incredible with your smartphone’s tiny speakers.

HDMI plugs come in 3 sizes. Regular HDMI plugs (Type A)
which have full-size ports which you will find on TVs, game
consoles, and laptops. The ports you'll find on smartphones and tablets are either mini HDMI, middle (Type C) or Micro HDMI, right (Type D).

Of these , the Type D, or Micro HDMI is the smallest. No
Matter the kind of smartphone you have, connecting it to a
HDMI socket won't cost you much .

You can also use the SlimPort/MHL.Just like HDMI, MHL and SlimPort support both audio and video. However, both need breakout boxes, a small dongle on your device and a Smart TV that can convert the signal from your smartphone to one that is compatible with HDMI.

MHL has undergone several versions, it's currently on the third version that improves the resolution to 4K. This also applies to SlimPort. If your Smart TV doesn’t support the MHL or you have a SlimPort handset, you will need to buy an adapter. With three versions of MHL and SlimPort, you have to make sure your device meet the specifications before purchasing an adaptor.
I suggest you use the HDMI since it's the easiest one to set up.

Phones / How To Update Apps Without Google Playstore by matrixx9(m): 2:47pm On Oct 21, 2016
Some Android applications aren’t hosted on the Play
Store. This means you’ve to sideload them for you to enjoy their
incredible functionality. However, without the Google Play
Store, these apps are never automatically updated. So the
only option you are left with is surfing through the internet
for the latest version when you need a bugfix.

Fortunately, the issue of having to download a version now
and then is finally over. Developer rumboalla has created an
application that will scour the internet for you. This app will then give you a notification every time your side loaded applications has an update. The app download updates from APKPure, APKMirror or even Google Play Store. The app makes it possible for you to easily for you to update all of the unofficial applications easily in a few steps.

1.Install Apk updater from the link at the end of the post

First, download APKUpdater app , hit the Download complete
notification and then click ‘Install’ when prompted.

2. Adjust Options

You also have to adjust some of the APKUpdater’s
settings..To do that, tap on the gear icon in the top-right corner.
Check the box under the option ‘Skip experimental builds’ to make sure the application does not download the alpha or beta
versions and then ‘Check for Updates’ option. This enables
you to tell the application how frequently you want it to
check for updates.

At the bottom of the menu, enable additional application
sources. These are sites where the app will occasionally
check for updated version of your sideloaded application.

3.Update the sideloaded applications

With everything now set up, you can now relax because the
application will check for new versions of your installed
applications in the background. Once it finds an updated,
itsends a notification – just click to proceed. The select any
application that needs to be updated and you are taken
directly to the site where you can easily download an
updated version of this APK. Take the APK, launch it and then tap ‘Install’ and your sideloaded application will now be
running the newest version in seconds.

Please download the app from the source link

Phones / From 3G To 4G LTE - What Lies Ahead For Nigeria? by matrixx9(m): 7:17am On Oct 14, 2016
Recently MTN, GLO and Etisalat Upgraded their Network
Services to 4G LTE . You’ve heard, probably seen it plastered across billboards, and read about it on your cellphone . But the
question remains, what is 4G LTE, and how do its speeds
and coverage compare to other 3G and 4G networks?

A History of 3G and 4G

In order to understand what LTE is–beyond “a really fast
network”– we have to take a little step back in time.
When the 3G, or 3rd generation, standard was the best
thing in the early 2000s–it made accessing the internet on your
phone significantly faster and more convenient.

3G is required to meet IMT-2000 (International Mobile
Telecommunications-2000) technical standards, which
means a peak download rate of 200 Kbps, or 0.2 Mbps. This will
obviously seem slow to you now, but at the time, it was enough to get your email in a timely fashion.
So logically, the next step after 3G–the third generation of
wireless mobile communications technology–would be 4G,
or the fourth generation. The the ITU Radiocommunications
Sector (ITU-R) set some requirements as to what would
constitute a 4G network: it must provide peak 100 Mbps
downloads if you’re using a mobile device such as a
phone or tablet.

Stationary devices, such as mobile hotspots,
should be able to provide peaks speeds of 1 Gbps.
In recent years, 3G has really made some admirable
advancements. High Speed Packet Access (HSPA), for
example, can give theoretical speeds up to 7.2 Mbps, and is often called 3.5G or Turbo 3G.

Then came 4G, in the form of Evolved High Speed Packet
Access (HSPA+), and Long-Term Evolution (LTE). Only
HSPDA+ was marketed as 3.75G while LTE
was marketed this as “4G”, even though both didn’t meet
the ITU’s standards–neither reached that 100 Mbps download
rate.

LTE, however, wasn’t just another improvement of 3G. It
was meant to be more of an umbrella term given to the
technologies designed to get us to the 4G standard. In
other words, it’s what 4G will be be when the technology evolves
enough to provide those speeds. It’s 4G-Eventually.
Despite the high standards they set earlier , the ITU-R
decided that mobile carriers could market LTE (and HSPA) as 4G , since they represented a significant improvement over 3G and paved the way for true 4G speeds.

How LTE Stacks Up in Speed and Coverage

Okay, I'm done with the history lesson. Let’s tackle the
question that truly matters: What kind of speeds does LTE
actually offer right now? Frankly, it depends on where you
are and who you are using for your wireless service.
According to a speed test by a YouTube Vlogger , the
average MTN LTE download speed is 5.5 Mbps while the global
average is 13.5 Mbps. That’s far off the ideal 100 Mbps
4G standard, but a marked improvement over old 3G speeds.
Remember, that’s an average. Your speed may be faster, or
it could be slower.

But it’s not just about speed: coverage matters too. After
all, if you never see that “LTE” icon in the menu bar of your
phone, you won’t ever get those highly-advertised speeds.
Coverage depends on your carrier. Each of the Nigerian
carriers–MTN , GLO and ETISALAT ,–utilize
different frequency bands, which is how they separate their
signals from one another.

A frequency band is a group of radio frequencies mobile carriers thus use to communicate with clients.
Network coverage at lower frequencies, particularly the
700Mhz range, will provide LTE access in more locations
such as buildings and sheltered areas. In fact, in terms of
coverage–measured by how much time subscribers are
able to get an LTE signal, the top 3 carriers haven't reached
parity.

The Future: LTE Advanced and 5G

That’s the present. So what does the the future hold ?
Mobile broadband speeds will no doubt continue to
advance and gain speed. LTE Advanced is the new standard some companies are hyping, which promises to finally deliver “True 4G” speeds. So basically, LTE Advanced is what 4G was supposed to be all along. 5G , meanwhile, will be the next logical step up from 4G.

As you might guess, 5G stands for fifth generation, and is
supposed to promise speeds up to 10 gigabits per
seconds– enough to download a full HD movie in mere seconds.
Unlike LTE, which occupies lower frequency bands, 5G
can occupy both lower frequency bands and ultra-high
bands. Using these higher bands means 5G won’t travel as far as 4G LTE and will need to be throttled to make it practical to a
wide audience.
None of this matters much at this point however, as the
technical standards are still being worked out and won’t
be finalized until 2020.

For right now, 4G LTE is good enough for the vast majority
of mobile users, and will be for some time. Logically, if or
when True 4G or LTE Advanced becomes the norm, it will suffice
for a time while mobile providers roll out 5G and so on.

Considering how long it took the top network providers to
upgrade to 4G LTE. I don't know when Nigeria will get to
4G LTE Advanced or 5G. However most people still fear
that once there's a drastic increase in people using 4G
enabled smartphones, the speed would reduce. Let's keep
our fingers crossed and leave the top OEMs to decide.

Phones / Re: Never Lose Your Text Messages - How To Backup Your SMS To Your Gmail by matrixx9(m): 6:08am On Oct 01, 2016
luigiajah:
In the world of search engines, email service and mobile OS, Google has put even the pioneers out of business.

Unfortunately, despite all the amazing features that Android OS comes with,
it does not allow you to back up SMS to Gmail account but there's a way to make this work.

Now there are plenty of apps that let you backup SMS on Android, but there is a special one that enables you to synchronize them with your Gmail account. Now you can not only keep a check on all your emails but your text messages from the same
place.

Step 1: Enable IMAP Access to your Gmail account

Before you can begin backing up your SMS to your Gmail
account, you need to grant IMAP access to it. To begin, sign
in to your Gmail account from your computer and navigate to
Settings->Forwarding and POP/IMAP .

The window will show you multiple options to select, so tap
on the empty box next to “Enable IMAP”. Now scroll down
and click on “Save Changes”, and you’re all set to go ahead
and configure the SMS Backup+ app.

Step 2: Download and configure SMS Backup+

The app which allows you to back up SMS to Gmail account
is called SMS Backup+, and is available on the Google Play
Store for free. Simply search for the app.

Once the app is downloaded, open it and tap on the
“Connect” button to add your Gmail account to the app. A
pop-up window will show you the Gmail account (or
accounts) connected to your Android device, so tap on the
one you want to back up your SMS to.

After offering the “Allow” permission to the app from your Gmail account, you will have to confirm backing up the stored
messages on your device by pressing “Backup”. You have
now successfully backed up your SMS to your Gmail account.

Phones / 7 Things To Do When Your Smartphone Falls Into Water by matrixx9(m): 6:07am On Oct 01, 2016
Let's say you are at your house, your kitchen, or in a party and your phone slips into the toilet, pool, or sink. No worries.

The thought of using your hard earned money to buy a new smartphone hits like a brick.

It is quite true that your smartphone might be destroyed, but if you act very fast enough, you can easily prevent your phone from becoming damaged and save the extra cash . Before going to what you have to do, let’s have a look at what you should not do immediately after your phone falls into water.

Do not press any keys Do not turn the device on Do not bang, or tap the phone Do not blow it Do not take your phone apart since most device come with a Liquid Damage Indicator which when activated, could ruin your warranty, and this could be triggered by opening your device. Only open it if you absolutely need to.

Do not heat it (that includes microwaving it or using a blow dryer).

The heat from a dryer can damage your device’s internal components permanently. Do not blow on your phone. This may to send water into the internal parts of your handset that it had not reached thus causing more damage.

Do not cool it down
Now here are Things that you should do after your phones falls in water

1. Remove the phone’s battery

This is among the most important steps to saving it. Lots of circuits inside your smartphone will survive a water damage provide they’re not connected to a power source when wet. To check whether your phone is water damaged , look at the corner where the battery is. You should see a white circle or square, with or without red lines. If you see, a red or pink color, your smartphone is water damaged.

2. Remove the SIM card

Some of your valuable contacts and other files/data could be in your SIM. For some people, saving the SIM card could be worth of saving than the device itself. A SIM card tends to survive water damage quite well, however, it is advisable you get it out instantly and dry it.

3. Remove the SD Card, headphones, and other accessories

Remove all accessories and plugs that cover the slots, revises, and gaps in the device to expose them to drying . 4. Keep your handset with the screen pointing up.

One of the most vital things you would want to avoid is the water getting near your screen’s electronics. To prevent the risk of damaging your phone’s screen, keep it pointing upwards and gravity will do its thing to keep more moisture from getting near the screen.

5. Dry your device with soft paper towels.

Dry your smartphone with paper towels to remove moisture on the device. You can also wrap your handset in paper towels, and shake it up to get more moisture out of your handset’s core..

6. Get a drying agent
To dry your handset completely and as fast as possible, you’ll need to absorb all moisture from its core. Below are two effective drying agents that you can use to dry your handset: Silica Gel Pacs Rice

You should get enough of these two to cover your handset completely. From all sides. In case you don’t have access to these two, you can consider using a vacuum cleaner. It can as well save your device from becoming water damaged.

7. Wait for 48 hours If you really want to recover your phone from water damage you’ll need to be patient. Do not even attempt to turn it on to avoid short circuits. The above steps help your recover your phone from water damage.

Meanwhile, you should take a preventive measure by purchasing Rice or Silica Gel Packs to make sure you are fully prepared for such incidents.
