@reagand200 source, please? |
Dear Nigerians, Its been a week of passionate arguments and protests against the removal of fuel subsidy. While many nigerians have strongly condemned this move by the government, especially coming on the first day of the new year without publicity, and plans to cushion the inflationary effect it will cause on the economy and the life of Nigerians, Others have supported the move and its promised effect in the long term. This is your chance to bare you mind! what wold you advice the president of Nigeria( Goodluck Jonathan) to do? If you were the president, what would you do right now? |
nice. very few "faults". If this can be accepted, adopted and adapted, we're moving on to better days. |
IrunmoleD1:well put! It is gain for the people if the ruling class gets the message now. Enough of robbing the country blind while many groan in poverty for their corruption. If anger begins to spill over to politicians only those with honest people-oriented projects will last. |
wait a sec! look at this poster's name; "kruku"?! isn't that a distorted form of the word "crook" in a local nigerian language? what the, ??!!!! |
It is frightening that GEJ allegedly has about 20 special advisers. If they are all like the energy man you've been referring too, then there is problem o!. Imagine we could have just 10 ministers with passion and facts like this femi falana guy. ( I heard he's spitting facts and figures). I dont understand why we need so many ministers and ministers of state, then directors and permanent secretaries all in the same parastatal. And they say there is no money! God help naija! |
It is people like you guys that condemn corrupt government. What part of "it is illegal" don't you understand? You end up corrupting more people at the port. just wait till this revolution is over. nigerians will start with folks like you! can you try that in the US? |
I would like to make an obvious prediction: "this struggle shall gradually transform to a revolution against corruption. It will no longer be subsidy or the price of oil anymore. It shall soon be a question of why senators, ministers and political leaders in general collect so much as allowances and bonus while a village woman dies of the so called 'maternal mortality' because she cant freaking afford to pay hospital bills in a poorly run health sector!". This will not stop. more and more questions will arise until the |
I love music and respect nigerian youths. I also believe everyone has a right to check out what they want on nairaland.com. However, It is absolutely pathetic that this forum should make it to the home page in the heat of a crisis/protest Nigeria is currently experiencing. Tell me, nairaland, were you paid for this? If this forum had made it to the front page because of the volume of comments I would understand. Come on!, even steve jobs passed on in the U.S and all that was all over the foreign media was about him for a few days. Just a page of comments and this is here? You gotta be kidding me! People are dying out there! theres arguments for and against curruption out there! we are on the verge of a major change out there! there's no electricity! no petrol to even watch the show! get real! |
"Its weird how things are playing out. government does damage control with foreign media, people power struggles to prevent Nigeria's president from removing gasoline subsidy, police kill protesters in parts of the country and some protesters have no clue what they are demanding for." sorry, here's a smaller size:

that should read "graduates" |
Nobody said no jobs were being created in Nigeria. What we are taking about here is the relativity. Are there enough to reduce the rate of unemployment significantly? Is there an enabling environment for the private sector to create the number required to absorb the huge number of graduated Nigeria produces every year? IF you have proof, facts and figures that this is so, kindly provide. |
Its obvious that what needs to be removed is not oil subsidy but corruption!!! |
bigaboi:couldn't agree more.! a committee comes after the subsidy is removed. WE HAVE BEEN "JOBBED!!", ( losely translated to mean deceived and robbed) |
It's sad and unfortunate. we are in a bigger mess than we ever thought! this is our minister in charge of the economy?!!! What the.?!! ATTENTION ALL NIGERIANS OUT TO PROTEST TODAY!!!!!! Lets change the focus of our protest. ALL politicians and political appointees should take a 70% pay cut!!!! What the, @***??!!! If we refer to developments in the west, they are quick to tell us " NIGERIA IS NOT AMERICA" and they get paid more than any public officer in the world!! kai!!!! imagine we spend billions to feed the leaders and their familes? madam minister is doing image cleansing for FG. the "diesel bus diver" has to buy food, water and clothes from the petrol-bnusinesses!!! so he will soon hike his diesel swallowing bus!!! what kind of experts do we have in charge in this country?!! so you want to use the subsidy proceeds to power "maternal or infant health or something? what the>>>!?? I thought there was a budget for health in the first place!!! somebody please help me here, dont we get funds from the african development bank and other world bodies for certain projects like polio, etc? Bill and melinda gates foundation just helped with malaria and poilo!!!! please NIGERIA, lets demand a mass resignation of these people or a 70% cut of all thier income from government purse!!!! wat the, !! ? |
@cba_info, tnx, that was very insightful. so we all truly agree that our leaders are transparent and accountable. I think that is what we should be protesting to enforce now or later. leaders should be made to address communities at different levels on what they spent money on. A list of projects executed, how much it cost and the contractors behind it should be published every time! Referendums should even be held to carry citizen along and know what they want. Enough of forcing projects on Nigerians |
@ Olas2u, i appreciate ur sincere response to this thread. I understand that is all you have to offer, so i'm not offended. Out of 150 million plus people in the country. It is not unusual to find a communicatively incoherent answer from a random poster. |
How can a SYTEM OVERHAUL e achieved in a country like Nigeria? I'd like to know, pls, Ghana seems to have been able to pull itself up by the string of its boots. after celebrating years of uninterrupted power supply, it announced a few weeks ago that it is ready to sell electricity to west africa. should we hang our heal in shame in Nigeria for daring to say "GHANA MUST GO"?? |
Mr. Globe, that probably why they say if you want to hide something from a nigeria, put it in a book. (how sad!). Anyways, GEJ has said in his budget speech that: "34. , The Agricultural sector is being totally transformed to enable us move from traditional farming to modern agriculture as a business both for our small and large- scale farmers. Our objective is to ensure food security whilst also promoting exports" source: http://www.budgetoffice.gov.ng/2011_budget/2012_Budget_Speech_by_the_President%5B1%5D.pdf It will help if for once a government can actually give us some credible statistics and precise steps planned to end unemployment, poor infrastructure and inefficiency of government agencies and political offices gulping tax funds and oil revenue! removing oil subsidy because of a so-called "cabal" is like refusing to bring money to the house because your child is now seriously stealing. The solution is to discipline the child, otherwise armed robbery is inevitable for that child. The government should start by publishing what NAAS members and senators take home monthly and how much they'll take home after the 25% salary cut. then a list of funds released for projects, the contractor and the amount released should be published by the federal, state and local governments from now on. no more stories, no more deception! enough is enough! No reason or explanation has been given as to why things are not working in the country. All we seem to hear are phrases like " we are on top of it", "looking into it" "consulting with stake holders" "setting up a committee" e.tc. by the way , still cant find the official URL for the federal ministry of agriculture, anybody? pls? I'd like to know |
US economy creates 200,000 jobs in December, The unemployment rate dropped to 8.5%, Large job gains were seen in retail, manufacturing, transportation and warehousing and healthcare. It is very unfortunate this is happening. Bad timing and bad method. Those in authority should understand that its not very easy to believe a system of leadership that has deceived the people and robbed the nation blind and deaf! for the better part of our staggering in the woods of development like a drunk in the dark!. Trust is the last thing most Nigerians have at the moment. Can the political class tell us the basis for our "enduring the temporary hardship" of the removal of fuel subsidy as guaranteed by those implementing the fuel subsidy removal? Looking beyond the immediate mess, the removal of fuel subsidy may have its positive sides and long term advantage. However, It is just not easy( if at all possible) to trust a leadership that has failed to provide electricity, adequate healthcare and refine enough oil products for its citizens to use for over 50 years. How do we know whatever "proceeds" come from this program will not be "swallowed like the other funds? Let the political class show some example by dropping the unbelievable allowances and bonuses they apportion themselves first. Let the government deal with the huge chunk of the national budget that sinks into running the presidency and serving the politicians and leaking out through over-infalated contracts! why should restructuring start with the already poor masses!?? There's got to be a better way around this. If we sit down and talk crap all day without standing up and demanding something better, then we're in trouble! Nigerians should let the leaders know that power is with the people!! we don't want war but lets take a lesson or two from syria, egypt, libya, and other places where people have "occupied" to make a change. Nigerians, enough of these "i no wan die philosophy and take some action! it does not have to be bloody. I hope all our musicians singing about "shaking your budy" will sing something against petrol subsidy operation too. |

It's natural that emotions are bound to soar in discussions like this. very few people here have made reasonable comments, Part of which is the fact that, 1) The kind of teachings in homes and religious schools/centers should be carefully watched. Teaching extreme content will not help anyone in this country. Kids are smart and can pick up and continue behavioral patterns and points of views of adults they look up to. 2) Anyone who lives in hatred can never know peace. This goes to all religious grps in this country. 3) Attacking or killing people cannot be justified by any means and should be treated as what it truly is: a criminal offense. It must be seriously punished. 4) Religions being accused of extremism in northern Nigeria owe themselves and their religions tireless re-orientation and re-education of both mis-lead and innocent followers if they hope to reduce( if not totally change) the distorted views they claim many people have about their faiths or culture in the country and beyond. Frankly, it's a little shocking shocking and disturbing to read some of the comments here by "educated/enlightened (and probably religious) young Nigerians who are at the very least intelligent enough to use a computer. Pls., let's remember this is an online forum, its a public thing and the fact that your faces are not displayed next to your comments should not encourage unguarded expressions of emotions. lets be civilized and proffer solutions to this barbaric bombings and murders!! (well, i understand this might be extremely difficult for some of us whose lives have been torn apart in the name of religious or cultural extremism ) |
Well, are talking about first love or first sex? The main reason why many find the "first love thing" difficult is because there was sex. Trust me guys, If there was no sex, all you are left with is a fuzzy cute feeling for the person and nothing more! |
