I guess we are allowed to believe in the books we read.

So you would have been right to say that the church grew despite the empire and not the other way around.
We can discuss the influence of the empire on the church, we can discuss the influence of the Catholic church on the bible but saying that the empire created the church would be clearly false.

We had sects,ROMAN EMPIRE CREATED ROMAN CATHOLIC to unite the different sects and maintain a single doctrine.
After creating there Christianity they killed other sects that didn’t agree to theirs thanks to CRUSADERS.

ROMAN CATHOLIC had church fathers that created everything in Christianity now.

Remember the slipt between the Roman church and the Greek church is a much older affair. Unfortunately much of the Greek Church was wiped out with the fall of the Byzantine Empire
