he was a senator for 8 years, married to Justice Bola Ajibola's daughter (i think), contested for the governership in AC, when Fashola was chosen ,he crossed to APP, when they promised him a ticket, after he lost the election, he returned to AC as a commissioner for Fashola.

Politics › CBN Consultants Juggle Options On 5 Banks by mbulela(op): 2:52am On Sep 14, 2009
By Ayodele Aminu, 09.14.2009

The financial consultants to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are considering a number of options for the five banks, whose managements were sacked exactly one month ago.

On August 14, the banking watchdog had sacked the senior management of Afribank, Finbank, Intercontinental Bank, Oceanic Bank and Union Bank. It also injected N420 billion into the banks, saying lax governance had left these banks dangerously undercapitalised.

Thereafter, the banking watchdog appointed new helmsmen John Aboh (Oceanic Bank), Lai Alabi (Intercontinental Bank), Susanne Iroche (FinBank), Nebolisa Arah (Afribank) and Funke Osibodu (Union Bank) into these institutions to stabilise and make them attractive for core investors.

THISDAY gathered that some of the options, which the consultants are considering are rights issue, scheme of arrangement and forced acquisition.
Confirming these developments yesterday, a top CBN official, who craved anonymity, said the consultants are considering various options.

He, however, said the primary preoccupation of the banking watchdog is neither to sell nor recapitalise the five banks but to stabilise and make them strong and attractive.

“Honestly, as you know, we (CBN) have appointed financial consultants to advise on the best way for these banks. All the options you mentioned including others are on the table.

“The consultants are looking at the various options but the management of the CBN has not yet looked into it or taken any decision. Our concern now is not to sell or recapitalise the banks but to stabilise, make them sound and let them contribute their quota to the development of the country,” he told THISDAY last night.

The first option (rights issue) is to convert the five bank’s tier 2 capital (the amount injected) to 80 per cent of the banks’ shareholding. But lawyers are said to have advised against it, saying that CBN does not have the legal backing to execute a rights issue.

The second option (scheme of arrangement), will require an approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). This is a legal means of bringing shareholders to agree to a merger or acquisition arrangement.

The third option (forced acquisition), according to information, involves nominating a bank to acquire others and then backing the action with statutory powers – just like the scenario that played out in  the acquisition of Springbank by Bank PHB.

Politics › Akingbola Reports Self To Uk Police by mbulela(op): 2:21am On Sep 14, 2009
By Ayodele Aminu and Davidson Iriekpen, 09.14.2009

The former Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Mr. Erastus Akingbola, is not likely to return to the country until he is formally charged to court, but he has reported himself to UK authorities after being declared wanted in Nigeria.
A statement issued on his behalf by his Media Assistant, Suleiman Adebajo, in Lagos, yesterday said: “Akingbola wishes to make clear – in light of escalating press speculation – that he is most emphatically not evading arrest by the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria or ‘on the run’.”
Akingbola, who the statement addressed as the Group Chief Executive, and a Director of Intercontinental Bank Plc, President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, Nigeria and the Second Vice-President of Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), said he is “not guilty of any wrongdoing but appears targeted for persecution and for character desmirchment”.
The statement reads: “He is currently in the UK. Our client believes that the prime objective of detaining all those arrested is to prevent them from presenting their side of the story.
“All persons should be presumed innocent until proved guilty by a court of law. As soon as it was alleged that he was evading arrest, Dr Akingbola notified the UK authorities of his whereabouts and provided full contact details through his legal representatives. Dr Akingbola strenuously denies all allegations of wrongdoing or improper conduct and has challenged the legal validity of his removal from office as Group Chief Executive of Intercontinental Bank Plc by way of judicial review which will come up at the Lagos Judicial Division of the Federal High Court on 14th September 2009.
“The proceedings relating to the bail application by the four other bank Chief Executive Officers and other non executive directors of Intercontinental Bank Plc have also been adjourned to the same date.
“All further comments on this matter will await the outcome of the legal suit in order not to prejudice the outcome of the suit.”
According to one of his associates, Akingbola believes he is the main target of the sack of five bank chiefs by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Akingbola had travelled to the UK a few days before the sack, after holding a meeting with the staff and informing them of the impending CBN action.
On August 14, the CBN had sacked the senior management teams of five banks -Afribank, Finbank, Intercontinental Bank, Oceanic International Bank and Union Bank – and injected N420 billion, saying lax governance had left them dangerously undercapitalised.
Already, Akingbola has challenged the legal validity of his removal and the case comes up today at the Federal High Court in Lagos where his colleagues will also have their day between today and tomorrow.
Akingbola and the incumbent Governor of the CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had had some disagreements over de-marketing when the latter was the CEO of First Bank of Nigeria Plc.
The former Intercontinental Bank boss had alleged that First Bank was de-marketing Intercontinental Bank and even placed an advertorial to that effect in some newspapers but did not mention First Bank or the name of its CEO.
The advert referred to “one of the old generation banks whose CEO had an ambition to become the Governor of the CBN”.
De-marketing is a term used to describe competitors trying to pull down one another.
This development, according to the statement from Adebajo, explained why it was only Intercontinental Bank that had all its directors in detention.
He said: “How do you explain the fact that directors whose loans are performing are being locked up today? Even those who don’t have one naira loan in the bank are being held in detention.
“Is it not curious that in our democracy you can accuse people without one shred of document to support your allegations and immediately parade them as criminals?”
He said Sanusi never hid his dislike and disdain for Intercontinental Bank Plc and the CEO while he was CEO of First Bank. This, he explained, was why he orchestrated a ferocious de-marketing campaign against Intercontinental as MD of First Bank.
“In the past few days, the whereabouts of Akingbola have been a subject of speculations, and deliberate falsehood. It is clear that he is not in Nigeria contrary to what the false rumours that were circulated would want the public to believe,” he said.
Adebajo said he had also read in the newspapers that Akingbola had been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged misdeeds while in office as the Group CEO of Intercontinental Bank Plc.
He said: “As at the time the news appeared, he (Akingbola) was already outside the country for medical care. He had told me and other close associates that he was eager to come back to the country to squarely pursue his case against his removal from office by the CBN.
“Indeed, against his doctor's advice, he left London for Nigeria on Sunday, August 16, 2009 (two days after CBN's incursion into Intercontinental Bank) just to institute the legal action against CBN.
“However, his condition deteriorated a day after his arrival following his traumatic experience from threats and harassments by security agents and other faceless individuals, thus prompting his immediate return to London for full medical care.
“He has already indicated his intention to be back to the country as soon as his doctors certify him fit to contest the aggression by CBN against his person and the institution he has laboured to build from scratch for 20 years. He will then promptly report to EFCC as soon as he steps into Nigeria, as he has nothing to hide.”
CBN’s spokesman, Abdullahi Muhammed, who described these allegations as personal, said he would not want to comment.
“All these are personal things, which I do not want to comment on. But the facts of the matter are on the ground. Is it not true that those loans were given out? Was the process of investigation not undertaken?
“If the Governor was against him (Akingbola), what of others that do not have anything personal against the Governor,” he asked.

Education › Re: The Best Business Schools In The World by mbulela: 9:54am On Sep 12, 2009
one more thing, most stories from business schools are exaggerated.
it is a lifetime expereince but it is not the best thing after sliced bread.
An MBA makes you rounded in the theory of Management and opens some doors but it does not make you an expert in any field.
Most of those 5 star profs they advertise for the top schools will not be at your beck and call.
maybe teach you an elective or a guest lecturer for a topic or two.
It is most of the budding stars that will teach you the cores and have their doors open for you all day.
The networking opportunity is good anyway.
if you attend a global school, you contacts will be global and remember the program is as much academics as social.
join clubs, attend cohort organised parties and remember if you are eyeing the McKinseys, Bain, BCG, ATKearney and EY, you must have the very best grades.Consideringthat the top schools attract the best brains, that is a very tough one (without chips or sorting wink)
Education › Re: The Best Business Schools In The World by mbulela: 9:47am On Sep 12, 2009
interesting thread.
i doubt we will come to an agreement on this topic.
it boils down to your personal circumstances and desired career path.
make no mistake, whichever way you desire to go in future, you can make it with or without an MBA.
the fact is that it opens some (not all) doors that would have remained closed.
boys CVs are bulging these days, an MBA from a top business school will go some (not all the way) way in setting you apart.
one advice, if you must go to a top business school, try and have some years of concrete work experience behind you, it would add value to your learning.
as sweet as these names are to roll off, entry competition tight o! very, very tight!!
if you are truly exceptional (work experience in a 5 star firm, top, top GMAT and a 1st class or 2'' 1, they would offer you a scholarship that would cover up to 30% of the fees (some top schools do, i can't vouch for all)).

this thread is seemingly US-centric, for a more global and rigourous rating, check this link; http://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/global-mba-rankings
whatever you do, if it is not a Harvard executive MBA or the executive program in Manchester, keep away from distance MBA programs. ain't worth it.

"ALAMS, Goodluck and Sylva"? You are talking about money that never gets awarded, they stole other state monies. But way above that, you are begging the question.
The current structure of the country facilitates corruption and backwardness; the right organ to pressure for that change is the FG.
The structure of the pyramid "Federation" is the foundation for the two pillars of corruption in Nigeria; the federal and the states govts.

Corruption is not unique to the Niger Delta, it is a Nigerian malaise which exists only because the country is set up the wrong way with money flowing from the FG to the states, instead of the opposite.

If money flowed from state to FG, it will make the FG accountable to each state (one pillar of corruption down).
Also, if money flowed from the LG to the state instead of the other way round, state govts would be 100% accountable to their people (the other pillar of corruption down).

MEND is 100% right to "negotiate" with the FG.
What do you mean by the highlighted phrase?
another wrong premise is the phrase in red. wherever the money flows from will simply become the center of attraction and the seat of corruption in the country.Where the carcass is, there the vultures gather.
Corruption is institutionalized in the country.it is endemic and runs from the east to the west, from the north to the south of the country.
my point is that if the militants and their supporters hold the regional leaders accountable for the 'little' that is allocated with the same vigour they are bombing oil facilities, kidnapping oil workers and harassing the federal govt, their will be a noticeable difference in the ND even while the resource allocation fight is still on.Can you imagine gaining total control of the allocation of the resources of the ND and leaving it in the hands of gangsters like Ibori, Alams,Goodluck and Odili?
corruption will remain irrespective of how the money flows. the sources of flow will simply become the new center of looting.
resource management and accountability is a more urgent issue than resource allocation.
If the militants and their supporters feel so much about the ND issue, this is where to start from and the issue of Odili and Ibori would long have been resolved at a regional level.
Politics › Re: CNN Ridicules Governor Sylva by mbulela: 3:12am On Sep 11, 2009
While this may sound nice, it demonstrates a lack of understanding of the issues involved. Oil is a finite commodity. By the time you perfect resource management, oil will be long exhausted and there will be nothing left to control. It also suggests that the owner will continue to endure humiliation and psychological defeat until he achieves good resource management.

I disagree with this assertion completely.
do you have a clue ALAMS, Goodluck and Sylva have received in the last 7 years while the resource is not controlled?
enough to transform Bayelsa State and make Yenegoa (very small town) in particular an envy to others.
what was done with the resource allocated? stolen with relentless impunity.
the militants and all those fighting for resource allocation are fighting a battle on behalf off the the thieving elite not because they love the elite but because they think it is an easier battle than resource management.
If the battle for resource allocation is won this weekend, 24 months from now, there will be absolutely no difference in infastrucutre, leadership and well being of the persons of the Niger delta.
the rich will only get richer and oppress the masses more than ever before.

the regulatory authorities have to restructure the entire banking industry.
all these 'chase for deposits using girls in skimpy clothes, large hips and big busts' is so 18th century.Banking is a science and a refined art.

Business › Re: Understanding The Banking Sector by mbulela: 1:57am On Sep 11, 2009
i have a fundamental problem with Dayo Coker's approach, as intellectual as his posts are.
He seems to have a hidden agenda and seems intent on persons beyond issues.
i have spent time writing through his blog and on the persons he disparages i also share a similar sentiment.
even those he hero worship, i dislike (as a reminder, i dislike almost the entire Nigerian elite because i believe the story of their crookedness and fraudlent acts are still hidden).
He started and sustained a concerted campaign against Femi Otedola in his personal (so he said) capacity as a fan of Aliko Dangote.
i warned on this forum that taking sides when two members of the Nigerian elite fight is a short sighted route because their fights are rarely borne out of principles or ideologies, they are often the fruit and manifestation of greed and fraud.
Today, Femi and Aliko have made up and agreed to continue doing what they do best.
Where is Dayo Coker? He has gone quiet and moved unto other targets such as Cecelia and Erastus.
Painting Aliko to be a saint while exposing Femi Odetola only serves personal gains and does not solve the problems of the loop holes the rich use to exploit the system for their selfish ends to the detriment of the masses.
Same with attacking the persons of Cecelia and Erastus.
I want as many bank MDs as possible to go down as a lesson to those in the corporate sector who are abusing the trust and confidence of the public that every day is for the thief but one day,
I don't care what Sanusi's hidden agenda is as long as the banking sector gets sanitized in the process and he puts the fear of the Most High into those gangsters in the industry.it is known that one of the best ways to fight corruption is to let people know and see that justice will be done if you are corrupt
a final word for Dayo Coker, now that Aliko and Femi have made up and resumed their partnership, is Femi still the evil you blogged about and Aliko God sent?
If so, will evil company not corrupt good manners?
