This was my observation of the scam airports in 2013.
I was insulted by the some APC and PDP loyalists.

You were not the only one to voice it. The airport projects was one big scam. Same woman has now been sent to Senate.

I hope whoever was given the contract for Ph international airport is among the list of those to refund?
That scam of a project is disgusting.

A government has to earn the peoples trust before the people will make sacrifices for the government. The only way for me to trust a government is when they build new refineries and maintain the old ones. Before then, they should carry their cross since the mismanged their own share of the petroleum bounty and now they want my own (Subsidy).

See the twin problem;

You want them to build refineries before removing subsidy? The country is too broke to afford to build one refinery while paying the subsidy (most of it are outright stolen funds). As i have said elsewhere, the country has never been as broke as it is at present.

On the other side, it will take years to buid a refinery. Doubt it can be done in 6 months.

So how do you wish to continue?

The money gotten from the partial Subsidy removal was enough to build at least one Refinery. Why did GEJ not do it? Because, he had no plans for that. Even if he removed Subsidy totally, there would not be any refinery. A thief is a thief.

I stood against Subsidy removal because with all the money in the hands of these thieves, our infrastructure decayed, our reserves depleted and our debt rose despite selling Crude at Astronomical rates. The Subsidy is the only thing the government is forced to do for the people. If you take away that, they will have no reason to do anthing.

This is the crux of the matter.
As much as I stil lthink we should remove it, this argument is what makes its removal contentious. We have been fooled enough times, even CHANGE will not make me optimistic enough that the money will be used judicously.
On the other hand, the country is broke and cannot afford to pay the subsidy. Forget all this posturing, Nigeria as a country is flat broke.

In the end, government will become richer if subsidy is removed, but Nigerians will become poorer. So removal is not the most suitable option. The best option is refining our own petrol. One more thing, the government who is crying for money has the responsibility of refining the crude oil, if they cant do it, they should bear the brunt not innocent Nigerians. Its their failure, so they should deal with it.

I have issues with the point above.
As much as the increase will hurt us all in the short term, it is for our good.

Secondly, you make it sound like govt being richer by subsidy removal is a bad thing. The bad thing is what govt does with the increased riches.
It will take a while for us to be able to refine the petrol that we need.
What do we do in the interim? keep enriching crooks in the name of subsidy?
As it is, presently thieves submit invoices for fuel that was not even imported.
The whole fule importation business with subsidy is laden with corruption and it is almost impossible to eradicate.
Best thing is import it and let it sell at normal rate. Let govt keep its money and use it for something else.
Then we can address the stealing of govt funds at other sources.
Let us close this conduit and go address other sources.

Back to the topic, Subsidy removal is akin to Currency Devaluation! Both are good economic policies for a developing nation! However, our problem as a nation is the collective lack of moral ethics and reorientation! It's unfortunate that no one is willing to make sacrifices for the good of our Nation. At this stage of our national development, I would recommend for a partial removal!

Imagine we spending over 200billion naira on this Since last year, It's quite heart rending! If half of this amount is channelled to a particular refinery, I see no reason for fuel importation for domestic use! The truth is not far fetched, rather our leaders are building vast empires of selfish cravings for their tenth generation!

Let's go for a partial removal for only 2 years and in the third year a total removal. Before the third year our refineries should at least one, be cracking crude to It's different products enough for domestic consumption!

The problem most people have is not the semantics of subsidy or no subsidy.
The painful part is the scam involved in the process. people making billions for fuel they did not import.
There will be pain to go with the removal but let us go for it and reduce one conduit of cooruption.
