Politics / Greed; The Main Cause Of Nigeria Problems. by mckane1: 1:19pm On Sep 05, 2011
Greed is an excessive desire to possess wealth or goods with the intention to keep it for one's self.

Greed is inappropriate expectation. However, greed is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire and pursuit of wealth, status, and power. From the least in this country to the highest want to amass wealth at all cost. From the politicians to the corp member that steals his colleague's phone at the camp to the Igbo trader that cheat people of their money by selling them fake products as original.

Over 140,000,000 Nigeria are denied power by a few greedy people that may not be up to a hundred.

Millions of Nigerians are denied access to good water, road, health care, education, employment etc by a few greedy individuals that want to amass wealth at all cost.

Before Nigeria can see the light of meaningful development we have to do away with greed. We need to re-orientate the entire Nigerian citizens on the need to be discipline and do away with greed. I can't imagine this country going forward if our future leads are still stealing 5,000 naira phones at the NYSC camp. terrible!

We need the fear of God in this country, please let us all try in our various ways to preach to loved ones to have the fear of God in their hearts. God bless Nigeria

Nairaland / General / Suicide Bomber Gunned Down …as Police Foil Bombing In Borno by mckane1: 9:28am On Aug 16, 2011
A deadly explosion was yesterday averted by the police in Borno when a 25-year-old suicide bomber with heavily wired Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) was gunned down by policemen at the entrance of the state headquarters of the police in Maiduguri.

The bomber had defiled attempts to check his Honda Accord car at the command’s gate yesterday afternoon and had driven into the premises, knocking down policemen at the gate. Police authority said the unusual speed with which the bomber drove into the headquarters and his refusal to stop for check and search at the gate drew the attention of some policemen around as they opened fire on him.

Unexpectedly, the car hit a tree and halted immediately while policemen rushed to check the occupant. They were shocked to discover that the driver who defied checks at the sentry was a suicide bomber on a deadly mission.

They also discovered that the car painted in ash colour with registration number AP 851 ABJ was loaded with improvised explosives and 50 litres of petrol, a 28kg of raw acid, six gas cylinders and other devices well wired up to the steering head.
Borno State Police Commissioner, Mr. Simeon Midenda who briefed journalists on the incident said the command had received text messages ostensibly authored by the Boko Haram, threatening to disrupt the ongoing recruitment exercise of cadet policemen at the state headquarters.

“As a result of the already tight security around the police headquarters and other police formations in the state, a man aged about 25 years gatecrashed into the police headquarters in a Honda Accord saloon car with registration number AP 851 ABJ, knocking down policemen at the gate and headed towards the main building,” Midenda disclosed.

He said the scenario alerted the policemen on guard at the gate as they immediately opened fire on the suicide bomber, sensing he might run into the building for a deadly purpose.
Items found in the car include six gas cylinders weighing 13.6kg (each with its wiring), one air conditioner gas cylinder and two 25litre jerry can of petrol, one tin of ABRO can of 5litre volume and one acid orange 28kg drum, all wired together and terminated at the steering with a small remote.

Midenda attributed the success recorded to God and the prayers of concerned citizens of the state, noting that the people had been praying for restoration of peace and end to the Boko Haram problem.
He said investigation had commenced into the incident even as he urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies in fighting terrorism. He also enjoined them not to panic but asked the people to continue their normal businesses.
Nairaland / General / Primary Six Pupil Found Hanging In Benin by mckane1: 4:07pm On Aug 03, 2011
A primary six pupil (name withheld) was found Tuesday dead and hanging from a window in his guardian’s residence in Benin City. NEXT learnt that the 11-year-old child, who was allegedly raised by his maternal grand-parents in Igueben Local Government Area of the State, was discovered a few hours after he returned home from school hanging from a window protector, with a rope tied to his neck. The neighbours say they suspect the child must have committed suicide.

Popularly known as OZ in his neighbourhood, the deceased was said to be the only child of his mother and the eldest of his father, who has three other children [boy and two girls] from a second wife.

Residents of No. 9, Ogieva Street, Aduwawa, Benin City, where the sad incident occurred, were thrown into mourning and confusion, wondering what might have prompted the boy, whom they described as mentally stable and jovial, to have committed the act.

A resident said the authorities of his school cancelled the school’s graduation ceremony as a result of the incident. His visibly traumatised grand-mother disclosed that the boy was a leader of entertainment groups that would have featured in the graduation ceremony.
Politics / Fashola Orders Demolition Of Police Station by mckane1: 12:32pm On Aug 03, 2011
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, yesterday, ordered the immediate demolition of a police station built on drainage channel to address the twin problems of flooding and distortion of its environment.

The governor who gave the order while on inspection tour of Mushin area of the state said the order became imperative to ensure that the 16 roads awarded for construction in the area were delivered on time.

Fashola who personally came to Badejo Kalesanwo Street for inspection because he discovered that construction work had been slowed down by the present location of the Ladipo Mushin Police Station, which is sitting on the drainage.

He also inspected the station and the nearby Oduduwa Primary School, Mushin, along with some members of the State Executive Council like the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, pointing out that the police station was sitting on a drainage line in the area.

Fashola told the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station, Mr. Obinna Ikegwuonu that the state would relocate the station to a more befitting location, which would also be within the neighbourhood.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat who received and briefed the governor on arrival said Badejo Kalesanwo Street was one of the 16 roads in Mushin which had been awarded to CGGC Nigeria Limited.

Hamzat explained that the design of the road was 19 metres wide, noting that by the time it would get to the location of the police station, it would have been constricted to seven metres, thus necessitating the relocation of the station.

The demolition order was part of the ongoing demolition of property in the state done by the government to address its environmental problems.

The Lagos state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, told Daily Sun that the state government had commenced the demolition of two buildings on Lagos Island and another in Ebute-Meta on Friday.
He said the state government would not spear any of the marked buildings no matter the owner, hinting that 34 structurally weak buildings had been identified in the two areas.

Ayinde explained that they would first be subjected to rigorous tests to determine the extent of their weakness, saying those that fail the tests will be demolished in a controlled environment in order to safeguard the lives of the residents and those living in adjourning buildings.
Nairaland / General / 50 Crushed To Death On Abuja-okene Highway by mckane1: 9:26am On Aug 03, 2011
It was a gory site yesterday at the Zariagi end of the Abuja/Okene highway when the residents woke up to behold crushed bodies of over 50 robbery victims. The victims were said to be passengers of an Abuja-bound luxury bus, marked XI 300 ABC, belonging to a popular transport company.

They were said to have been waylaid by robbers, who ordered them to lie face down on the highway before they were dispossessed of their belongings.

An unsuspecting truck was said to have run over the victims and later escaped the scene of the accident.
A similar incident occurred precisely two years ago when a trailer lorry crushed 40 armed robbery victims along Sagamu/Benin highway.

The incident, which occurred along Odogbolu-Ijebu axis of the Benin Expressway also left several other passengers severely injured.

Kogi State Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Sunday Maku, confirmed yesterday’s tragedy. He said that his men were alerted to the scene by residents of the area.
An eye witness said that the luxury bus was coming from Lagos and headed towards Abuja when it ran into the robbers along Zariagi end of the Abuja-Okene highway.

The bandits were said to have barricaded part of the highway with a vehicle while their colleagues laid in ambush for oncoming vehicles at the other side of the road.
As the ill-fated vehicle ran into the robbers, the eye-witness stated that the hoodlums ordered all the over 50 occupants out of the bus and forced them to lie face down on the road.

The robbers later had a field-day dispossessing them of their money and other valuables.
It was, however, gathered that another luxury bus coming from Lagos, in company with another truck, was said to have run into the operation and in the process, crushed the passengers, killing them on the spot.

Maku disclosed that the mangled remains of the passengers littered the road as other vehicles ran over them. Bones, brains and other parts of the bodies were scattered on the highway.
He described the accident as so fatal that his men could only retrieve 14 bodies, consisting 10 male adults, three female adults and a baby. The driver of the bus and a soldier were, however, said to be the only survivors of the accident.

Maku urged members of the public to stop travelling at night, saying ‘night journeys are always deadly’.
Meanwhile, the bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, while the luxury bus had been impounded by the Police for investigation.

Nairaland / General / Shoot-out In Abia Govt House by mckane1: 9:26am On Jul 21, 2011
A shoot-out involving security details of Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Ahamefule Orji, has led to the death of one mobile police officer. Another is reportedly on danger list.

The incident, which happened in the early hours of yesterday at the police quarters of Government House, was said to have rattled government functionaries, who were doing everything possible to bring the situation under control.

A police officer, identified as Corporal Umoru Mohammed was at the centre of the tragedy. Doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia are now battling to save his life.

He was alleged to have shot dead Corporal Clement Amachi, who shares the same pilot vehicle 08 with him in the governor’s fleet.

Amachi hails from Ohanku, Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, while Muhammed’s state is yet to be ascertained.
Muhammed was said to have shot Amachi at very close range, while he was relaxing in his room, watching a late night movie.

Daily Sun later gathered that the shooting might not be unconnected with a gift allegedly given to the security details by the governor.
A hospital source told Daily Sun that the cause of the shoot-out was a N2.5 million gift given to the security details by the governor after a trip, and Mohammed was allegedly short-changed in the sharing.
He was said to have explained this to doctors before he was wheeled into the theatre to be operated upon.
According to the source, Mohammed said they had been cheating him in the past and that this time around, he was determined to square it up with his colleague who he suspected was behind the cheating.
Mohammed was alleged to have gone into Amachi’s room and shot him severally on the head at about 2.00 am, while the latter was watching television.

Daily Sun gathered that after he had confirmed that Amachi was dead, Mohammed stormed out of the house, with his AK 47 assault rifle, shooting sporadically as he walked towards the main gate of the government house.
It was after he had expended the bullets in his gun and wanted to change to another magazine that he was shot and disarmed by other security operatives around.
A source said Mohammed was shot in the leg, but another close to FMC where he was being treated told Daily Sun that he was shot on the right side of his rib and the bullet pierced through and came out from his lower abdomen.

A patient at the hospital said when Mohammed was brought to the hospital, he was too violent and almost refused to be treated by the doctor.
“He even fell on the floor of the hospital while he was refusing to be attended to,” the source said.
The doctor in charge of accident and emergency department at the FMC, Umuahia, Dr. Uche Aguocha said Mohammed had been operated upon.
However, the state government reacting to the issue said it was a personal thing between the two men involved, adding that the state governor was on top of the situation, as he was meeting with the security agencies in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, the media aide to the governor, Ugochukwu Emezue, said the governor did not discriminate over where any of his aides come from and that he had been treating everyone of them on equal terms.

According to Emezue, the governor had condemned the act of the policeman, shooting and killing his colleague, even as he condoled with the family of the deceased over the sudden demise of their loved one.
“The truth is that the man in question is dead and Mohammed is critically ill and is still at the hospital. When he recuperates, he will tell us the true position of things. Like I said, it is a personal thing and he is the only one that can now tell us what to believe,” Emezue said.

When contacted on telephone, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the police command was aware of the shooting and killing and that the issue was being investigated.

Webmasters / Navy Begins Admission Of Women On Board Vessels by mckane1: 12:12pm On Jul 08, 2011
The Nigerian Navy said it would soon commence the admission of female officers and ratings into its combat ships to begin a process of making combatant female officers and men.
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral James Akinwale revealed that no fewer than 40 female rating had already commenced training at the Special Boat Services unit of the force in readiness for their new role.

Admiral Akinwale who spoke with Daily Sun shortly after a parade to mark the end of his first Biannual inspection of units under his command, said the 40 ratings would be joining the Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS) Aradu from next week.
He said the need to turn around the Order of Battle of the force to begin to admit women into its vessel was necessitated by the coming of the new naval vessel NNS Thunder, which was recently presented to the force by the United States Coast Guard.

The FOC said that the NNS Thunder already had an allowance for women hence the preparation for the female ratings to get onboard the vessel when it arrives by the end of the year.
Daily Sun also learnt the decision to have women onboard the Nigerian Navy vessel was in accordance with the directive by the Federal Government to have women train as combatants in the Armed Forces.
He said during his biannual inspection, schools in the command of the Naval Training Command were visited, particularly the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology in Kachia, Kaduna State and the Nigerian Navy Provost and Regulating School in Markurdi, Benue State, the Naval College Onura, Rivers State and the Basic Training School in Akaso, Rivers State.
He said that his tour of schools within the force had revealed the need to position the training within the force to meet operational challenges.

While warning officers and men against unruly behaviour, the FOC urged them to have a cordial relationship with the civil populace, adding that the Nigerian Navy was known for high discipline and diligence.
The era of democracy, he explained, required subordination to civil government especially as the force was participating in internal security duties.
He added that the new role of the navy in the participation in internal security duties requires that the force comes up with a training manual to enable them have a successful participation. so my people don't you think these ladies might be harassed sexually later as they are going to be among men that out number them 10 to 1,
