Pedro hs yet to get into the game. His first touch has been vrry poor. Iniesta and Xavi are excellent in midfield, so is Cesc.

I cant get why you guys suggest that Pique is done. He is a quality CB; if you have played active football before, you will understand the assignage that comes with playing as a 5. In the role of CB, the No5 plays a little higher on the pitch than the no6. He is the one that marks the deep playing attacker, and is so open to being outwitted for pace and dribble because his approach is on the slow. Defensive flaws are easy to spot in his game, which does not reduce his defensive abilities. The no6 on fhe other hand plays a more reserved role and is the one we know to be the last man in defence. He is the finisher of all defensive works. His game is easier as he is afforded good time to read the game and correct the errors of his partner, if any. This is the reason someone like Puyol and Maacherano cannot make a decent defensive pairing or why Chygrinski never fitted into the Barca mode because he is natural no6 like Puyol. The case is similar to Pique and Batra's pairing towards the end of last season. Same case applies to why Yobo and Oboabona may never sync in the same team; both are no5.

Pique is good. Hes always been good and can only develop his game further. The people who voted him in the world xi at the last balon dor are more knowledgeable in the game than most of us on this forum.

Mascherano played far better, and put in a number of well-timed interceptions.

Agree on the ref though. Athletico was quite rough in their approach. Clearly they intended to hold the lead until the second leg.

I disagree with you on Pique, save for his inability to cope with the pace of the opposing attackers. And like JP observed, that inability of his is not oblivious to the least Cule fan. He played as a 5 which means he plays on the defensive fronthold of the centre back pairing, leaving Mascherano enough time and space to cover and ditch the last touch off the attacking play of the oppoaition. The understandng between both players was fantastic yesterday. I hope to see more of that as the season wears on. The bottom line of my argument is, Pique had a great game. His delivery from the back was terrific to say the least.

With the game over, a few observations:

1. I wish theo coaching crew and the sporting director will get a young and capable goalkeeper come January. Valdez made the goal by Villa a top notch, which is me not taking anything away frm how awesome the goal looked. Wish we can go for Courtois. He was a JOY to behold.

2. Iniesta was sloppy all night. His grip on the ball was 3rd rated.

3. Xavi is off his prime. At his age, there Is little he can bring to the game. Now is the time for Cesc to assume his role. Hes not been a dissappointment though.

4. The double pivot of Buaquets and Song that was deployed towards the end is a good formation fhat can be used to hold off strong counter attacking teams like we saw of Atleti tonight.
