Car TalkRe: Piston And Ring For Honda Accord(eod IVTEC) Is Urgenlty Needed by mdautotec(m): 1:49pm On Jul 29, 2012
Please read my statement. I am assuming the melted piston has scored the cylinder walls. If the cylinder walls are standard without damage they do not need to be bored re-sleeved. When you re-bore you take away the imbalance (caused by broken rings, melted pistons etc) on the cylinder walls. Yes though this will increase bore size, but then that is why you re-sleeve to bring the specs back to factory, so you do not use oversize piston and rings.

To further confirm that, Honda (OEM) have stopped manufacturing/selling oversized pistons and rings. OEM pistons and rings only come as standard. So if you ONLY bore the block the OEM parts will not work! If you re-sleeve with high quality block liners you can then use the OEM parts. The re-sleeved block and OEM rings will maintain a tight clearance to ensure longevity.

Neither does boring and re-sleeving the block affect con rod length. We are not going oversize here, so what is affecting the length of the con rod? When you order new con rods for a standard motor you get a standard size as per the VIN /engine number. We do not get asked from the manufacturer what rod length size we require.

And what are you referring to as a bent cylinder? First time I have heard of that. I have heard and seen a bent cylinder head.

This is not a theory. We have overhauled more than 200 engines (latest being a 2008 Corolla) in this manner for which we include a 6 months warranty, which have worked perfectly well and are still running steady. A long as you maintain the manufacturer's tolerances and use the OEM parts there will never be an issue.

Alternatively, if the cylinder walls are badly scored then the best advice, although expensive, is to replace motor with a new short block (half engine). This will include the block, crankshaft, pistons, con-rods, bearings (con & main).

Yes, overhauling is more time consuming and getting the genuine parts here can be an issue. It may not be for everyone.

Hope this clarifies some of your questions.
Car TalkRe: Piston And Ring For Honda Accord(eod IVTEC) Is Urgenlty Needed by mdautotec(m): 1:02pm On Jul 28, 2012
To get the OEM piston and rings is not the problem. If you replace these parts you will need to re-bore & sleeve the engine block. As the melted piston and deformed rings would have scored the cylinder walls.

If you replace these parts without re-boring and sleeving the block the oil pressure will leak past the new rings and straight into the combustion chamber. It will be burnt there and straight out the tailpipe. RESULT: ENGINE WILL CONSUME OIL & WILL HAVE LOW COMPRESSION as it's used.

Re-boring and sleeving the block will ensure engine longevity, along with using the genuine parts.

If you can't stomach the above just replace the compete engine.

Car TalkRe: 1999 Toyota Camry Consumes Too Much Fuel by mdautotec(m): 8:38pm On Jul 19, 2012
Temperature gauge should read approxoimately half within 4-7 minutes from a cold start, without AC on.After this period the upper radiator hose should be hot to the touch. If the hose remains luke warm this indicates thermostat is either not present (removed), or is opening too early relative to the specific temperature stamped on it's body. This does not allow the engine to reach it's operating temperature and the temp.gauge will read low. Engine cooling (water flow through engine cooling jackets) takes place once the the thermostat opens.

Hope this helps!
Car TalkRe: Steering Issues For Toyota Camry by mdautotec(m): 1:22pm On Jul 19, 2012
The power steering gear (rack) could possibly be leaking. It may not be so severe to show leakage on the ground, but this can be checked by removing the steering boot bellows from the inner portion of the steering gear assy. A small leakage could cause the fluid level in the reservoir to drop below the recommended/sufficient level; hence causing power steering pump damage (whining sound).

The fact that you have topped the p/steering fluid and the noise still persists it is safe to say the power pump is already worn/damaged due to insufficient lubrication.

It is also a good idea to inspect all the power steering hoses / lines.

Hope this helps!

If the gearbox is not totally damaged you may be better off repairing it. Replacement of the gearbox will be rather expensive. Probably not worth in line with the current value of the vehicle being an '04 model.

Car TalkRe: Is There Any Advantage Of Disconnecting Car Engine Temperature Thermostat? by mdautotec(m): 12:18pm On Jul 03, 2012
Removing the engine thermostat from a vehicle will not allow it to reach it's specified temperature. By doing this, the OBD type system remains in open loop. In open loop the ECM (engine control module) does not receive any signal from the O2 (oxygen) sensor and maintains a longer injector pulse width to spray more fuel into the intake manifold. More fuel is required on start up as the cooler intake manifold temperate causes rapid condensation on the intake runner walls; hence additional fuel is injected to overcome this. This is a set parameter in the ECM upon cold start ONLY.

The engine thermostat must remain closed (until it reaches the specified temperature stamped on it's housing) for the engine to reach it's optimum temperature to allow the OBD system to enter into closed loop in the shortest possible time. This also allows the O2 sensor to reach it's optimal temperature for closed loop feedback to the ECM. In closed loop the O2 sensor monitors catalytic converter efficiency and signals the ECM on the running of the engine. From this information various sensors (MAP, A/F, cam, crank) and fuel curve / ignition timing are monitored, maintained and constantly adjusted for maximum fuel economy, minimum tailpipe emissions and standard engine performance. This in turn will maintain longevity of the engine, catalytic converter etc.

Removal of the thermostat is a NO GO! Catalytic converter damaged will occur due to the excess hydrocarbons (unburnt fuel). The system will permanently remain in open loop as the engine will run cooler than specified. The rich mixture can also cause engine components (including valve train) damage over time as excess carbon builds up. Excess fuel consumption will occur and hamper engine performance. In some cases you may also observe black smoke (hydrocarbons) from the tailpipe, especially when the vehicle is accelerated.

It is advisable to replace the engine thermostat once every 12 - 18 months with a new one.

Hope this sheds some light on this topic.

Good luck!
Car TalkRe: Help-pls I Need A Good Autoshop I Can Raise The Base Of A Honda Accord by mdautotec(m): 12:03pm On Jun 29, 2012
You can raise the vehicle safely about half an inch (possibly 3/4 of an inch if possible). If raised more than this it will affect the geometry of the suspension and general handling of the vehicle. You will have more positive camber on the front / rear wheels. By this I mean the front of the wheels will tilt inwards looking at the vehicle dead on from front. The problem here is that on long distance usage over time the outer edges of the tires will wear prematurely. You may end up changing tires more often than you should.

Please note the ride height on any vehicle is determined but the suspension coil springs and NOT the shock absorbers!

AutosRe: Very Clean 09 Registered Honda CRV @1.7m now by mdautotec(m): 2:06pm On Jun 28, 2012
In all fairness a sellable price for this vehicle would be in the range of 900k - 1mill.

350k is not a confirmed figure to fix this vehicle in a way any individual would be thoroughly satisfied with. Reason being is that the transmission shift solenoids and clutch pressure solenoids of an '05 & '09 CR-V will not be the same in any way. Whoever converted the gear has definitely re-wired the transmission electronics to the current PCM (powertrain control module) for the vehicle to even move. Once the factory wires are cut and sliced you will basically have to re-wire the whole system back to factory spec with an appropriate '09 CR-V transmission wiring diagram. This would be such a tedious process and can only be performed by an experienced transmission/electrical technician.

In this process some other parts/components may have been affected. This can only be determined once the current '05 gear is removed and everything is thoroughly inspected. I am certain other issues will creep up during repairs. I have seen many technicians here install gearboxes of other models and it is in most cases a disaster!

However; your honesty is certainly appreciated.

Best of luck with the sale!

If you decide to drop your price, please do drop me an email on md_autos@yahoo.com. I may be interested, pending a general inspection.

Car TalkRe: Transmission Issues With Baby Boy by mdautotec(m): 10:38am On Jun 25, 2012
Reverse gear synchronizer sounds like it is damaged (sound you are hearing). This controls engagement of the reverse clutch drum which houses the clutch friction discs for reverse movement.

FIX: REPAIRABLE

1) REPLACE REVERSE GEAR SYNCHRONIZER ASSY
2) POSSIBILITY THAT FRICTION DISCS MAY ALSO BE AFFECTED. CAN ONLY BE DETERMINED UPON REMOVAL & DISASSEMBLY OF GEARBOX
3) GEARBOX OIL SEALS WILL ALSO REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, AS SOME SEALS MAY NOT BE RE-USABLE.
4) WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FILTER AT THE SAME TIME.

YOU MUST USE HONDA ATF Z1 (OR EQUIVALENT) AFTER OVERHAUL TO MAINTAIN SMOOTH OPERATION & LONGEVITY OF THE TRANSMISSION!

GOOD LUCK!
Car TalkRe: Transmissions Issues In 2005 Camry. Please Help! by mdautotec(m): 5:41pm On Jun 20, 2012
PO500 indicates a vehicle speed sensor malfunction. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is not reading (functioning) properly. There may be a broken/frayed wire leading to the vehicle speed sensor. The almost 0 km/h (0 MPH) signal from vehicle speed sensor is sent to ECM even when vehicle is being driven. This is when the code is detected. This will cause erratic transmission shifting problems and possibly a malfunctioning speedometer. Replacing the gearbox and ECM will not fix this problem.

Is there an ABS light illuminated on your instrument cluster? Have you replaced the ECM (engine control module), brain box? What is the outcome?

There could be multiple issues with the transmission electrical, as code PO778 also refers to the same (transmission electrical/shift solenoid).
Car TalkRe: Check Engine Signal - Toyota Camry CE 1999 model by mdautotec(m): 1:39pm On Jun 20, 2012
The MIL lamp (check engine) is on because the ECM (engine control module) has seen one of the EFI related components (sensor/sensors) is operating out of its specific parameter. These parameters are embedded into the memory of the ECM from factory. Once out of spec the ECM will ground (earth) the negative side of the the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) circuit and permanently illuminate the MIL on the instrument cluster.

You will need to run a diagnostic scan to retrieve the the fault codes, soft (intermittent), hard (permanent)., from the ECM. This will guide you towards effective diagnosis and repair of the problem.

Just for your information, most of these used cars form the US are prone to having the MIL lit on the dashboard. Mostly it is the O2 (oxygen) or A/F sensors operating below threshold on these Camry's. Vehicle will inmost cases run fine, but it will cause excess fuel consumption.

Good luck!
Car TalkRe: Help With My 2005 Honda Accord by mdautotec(m): 10:34pm On Jun 19, 2012
Do check the fuel strainer in the tank. This model of Honda Accord does not use an external fuel filter. The filter is embedded together with the fuel pump case in the fuel tank. The strainer could be clogged and very possible the fuel pump could also be weak (low fuel pressure). This would be a good opportunity to check for debris in the fuel tank, which may be clogging the strainer. If everything checks out fine, then you can move upstream for further diagnosis.

Since you do not have a check engine light on the instrument cluster, it would be safe to say there are no trouble codes stored in the ECM (engine control module). Although you may also want to check when you switch on the vehicle the MIL lamp (check engine lamp) illuminates and then switches off after 5 seconds or so. This is a self test being run by the vehicle ECM. The reason for doing this because I have seen many vehicles where the instrument cluster has been tampered with, i.e the MIL (check engine) indicator bulb has been removed, so the owner/user thinks there is no issue as there is no light illuminated.

There would also be no harm to check the transmission fluid level, just to be sure.

Good luck!
Car TalkRe: Help My Toyota Corolla Unusually Gulps Fuel!!!! by mdautotec(m): 10:09pm On Jun 19, 2012
Firstly, is there a check engine light (amber colored), illuminated on the instrument cluster?

If so, the first step would be to run a diagnostics. By that I mean a scan tool needs to be connected to the DLC (data link connector) of the vehicle. This will retrieve any trouble codes stored in the memory of the ECM (engine control module).

Any previous mechanical work done on this vehicle recently?
Car TalkRe: Help! Honda Accord Gear Problem. by mdautotec(m): 3:53pm On Mar 19, 2011
Honda Accord '98 - '00
common problem with the transmission for 4 cyl & V6 engines.

Fix: replace valve body (also friction plates/disc very likely affected in the clutch carrier/drums). Transmission should be overhauled or replaced.

Recommended transmission fluid: ATF - Z1 / Price: Naira 3,100 per litre

Although drain and re-fill of the transmission in most cases will not fix the problem.

Good luck!

AutosRe: Pls Help My Civic 2001 Is Messing Up by mdautotec(m): 11:48pm On Feb 21, 2011
Greetings.
Please run a fuel pressure test. Common problem with Honda Civic 2001 is camshaft sensor failure, and fuel pump failure. It would do no harm to also check the level, and condition of the transmission fluid.

I would stronlgy recommend, if you do find a faulty pump, you most definitely should service the 4 fuel injectors, replace the fuel pump strainer, service the fuel pump case, and use compressed air to blow out the fuel lines. The case houses the fuel pump, and is located beneath the rear (bench) seat. The pump must be fitted properly as there is an O-ring seal in the casing, and if weak or not fitted properly during replacement you will lose fuel pressure at this point. Also the fuel case must be handled carefully as it also has the fuel sending unit mounted to it.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Car TalkRe: My 2005 Corolla Consumes Too Much Fuel by mdautotec(m): 2:39pm On Jan 16, 2010
Hello. Various factors on a vehicle can cause excess fuel consumption. As per the Corolla 2005, you will need to first ascertain whether you have a check engine light on the dashboard. If not, you will regardless need to run a diagnostics on the vehicle to ensure no part of the Electronic Fuel Injection system is malfunctioning. Once this is ok, then other systems must be checked, such as fuel injectors, injector seals, fuel strainer, air intake / filter, air flow meter, knock sensor, fuel system pressure etc.
We have an auto service centre located at Iddo, near Lagos terminus. We handle Japanese, and Korean vehicles (mainly Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, Kia & Hyundai). AutosRe: Check Engine Lights In Honda Accord 2005 by mdautotec(m): 9:08pm On Sep 25, 2009
The catalyst in your catlytic converter, AND / OR the oxygen sensors are deteriorating. This is caused by the lesser quality of fuel being used on our side of the globe. Due to the malfunction of the converter the oxygen sensors before, and after the converter, are most likely carbonized: hence unable to give proper readings of the oxygen content in the exhaust, after the vehicle has entered closed loop (this is when the Electronic control module acts on readings from the oxygen sensor to adjust fuel curve for maximum effeciency ONLY after the engine has reached opearting temperature. In open loop the oxygen sensors are ignored by the ECM, as on a cold start condensation will form on the intake manifold, so more fuel, and air are required to quicikly atomize the denser air/fuel mixture, and get the motor heated up faster to its operating temperature.
If accurate readings are not sent back to the ECM; hence it does not know what to do, and opearates in a failsafe mode by increasing the injector duty cycle, and dumping more fuel into the engine. This is by default, so that the vehicle may still be used, until rectified, but at a price, INCREASED FUEL CONSUMPTION!
The vehicle will require a diagnostic scan. The code you will receive is catalyst, heater circuit, or oxygen sensor failure.
You may leave the catalyst, as it's purpose is to reduce emissions out of the tail pipe. As long as the quality of fuel we are using here is sub-standard, a catalytic converter will never function efficiently, and will certainly deteriorate, if replaced.
Although, replacing the oxygen sensor / sensors will aid in better fuel economy.
I would also recommend a fuel injector cleaning, testing, intake manifold flush, throttle body service, and fuel pump casing filter service. This will improve your fuel economy, might not be 100% due to the malfunctioning catalyst, but you will definitely notice a significant difference.

It will be cheaper to overhaul the engine. Re-sleeve / balance the engine block, and use the OEM (original) piston rings.

Kia overseas has stopped producing the short block (half engine), for this vehicle. Only complete engine avl. We just tried to order a short block from overseas, but not avl, and the complete engine is too expensive, N800,000 plus.

We are shortly commencing to overhaul this motor, for a customer, and offering a 6 month guarantee on parts, and labour. All OEM (original) KIA parts are being used.

We do not purchase or install fairly used (tokunbo) motors, as they are not guaranteed, and neither can we offer a guarantee on them.
