Unity schools came into being after the civil war and the objective was to foster unity by making people (young children) to learn about the cultures of other regions. The purpose was to capture the hearts of these young people before they develop a mindset about other cultures. It's an opportunity for first hand experience of different cultures.

Now, whether the Unity schools have lived up to expectations or are living up to expectation is another debate.
I attended a unity school and proud to say I have friends from all over Nigeria, which has enabled me to see issues differently. Yes, there are very strange beliefs and customs in Nigeria, some don't even make sense, and we are very diverse. These schools try to encourage learning other people's ways.

If 5000 Igbo children want 100 slot that has been given to them, it means the cut off mark has to be high enough to get the best.

If 50 Northerners want 100 slot that has been given to them, it means the cut off mark has to be lowered to encourage many of them to attend the school.
so the Northerners are like the Indians in The US? Endangered Species that need to be pampered for 3000 years before their brain sets?? Well am not surprised.......this stunts growth......I lost any iota of hope in Nigeria long time ago......and threads like these only solidifies my belief.............Nigeria thrives On Injustice and we are heading no where but the desert......No future........how can a people be pampared just because u want unity by lowering standards? I thoughÞ they were a majority ethnic group......the truth is the North will never value education so no need wasting our time

Quota System or Affirmative Action is very common in countries with federal structures, India, USA, and so on.
It is not only Education that is involved: It is also used for Female Empowerment where a particular number of slot is apportioned to women irrespective of their standing with their male counterparts.
The system is not perfect and has its shortcomings, I totally agree to the fact that, Igbo people are affected, All the southern states are affected as well.

Unfortunately all the arguments against this point seem to always divert to ministerial appointments.
Another thread can be created for that!
oga, I understand what u are driving @......but this quota system is not education........the North controls ALL federal parastatal not through merit but by these quota system.......it is anti progress........are we going to be waiting for the North by pacifying them to do what's right by going to school?? Its these kid of things that make me believe that Nigeria would never see progress......NO country survives on these faulty foundations.....please......and the US is not a good example......they will not delibrately lower their standards to the level we do in Nigeria just because some people do not want to go to school......the North have ruled for. More than 40 years and have nnothing to show for it.....Nigeria is doomed

To my fellow Ndi Igbo, people will not take us serious if we do not show basic understanding and we cry foul anytime we hear "North" in any conversation. It's quite ridiculous.

Let me break it down; Some call the system "Quota System" others call it "Affirmative Action" (you may search for that). It's primarily designed "to encourage" participation in an activity, usually when a particular group of persons or people have been found out not to partake in that activity as much as other persons or people. Everyone knows Northern Nigeria is the least literate part of Nigeria. So how can literacy be encouraged? Simply by increasing the number of participants by LOWERING their cut off marks which by the way doesn't infringe on any other region's "share".

As for we in the east whenever we give birth to a child what we're thinking of 'is which school the child will attend and not if the child will attend school or not. That speaks volume, it means there is HIGH PARTICIPATION, so how can we encourage excellence? By raising the cut off mark.
After achieving high participation the next goal is excellence.
will it take 100 years before they start participating in education? They don't like education but they want to rule in perpetuity

it seems you are plugged in, so you are not grasping what the theme of this thread is, what the implications are and what the rectification should be undecided how am I supposed to get through to you when you are so steadfast in your belief in mediocrity huh

nonetheless, i'm still gonna try

we are arguing, not based on the technicalities and implementation of the quota system, but based on the rationale behind it

let me state an example for you in practical terms. when i was in ss3, we had a junior student in ss2 then that couldn't do simple multiplication. like he couldn't do 4 * 4 and so on and I and my friends wondered how he kept rising through school with failed class reports. being much younger then, we probably just laughed it off as we had more pressing school issues to think about like light, water... however, now it does sink in a bit.

i ask you, would a student who scored 7 be learning the same material as the one who scored 60 huh

would the material be dropped down to the level of the "7" student, or brought up to the level of the "60" student huh

if it's brought down to the level of the "7" student, then the "60" student would have wasted a great potential in that school and if it is brought up to the "60" student level, then how would the "7" student compete huh

do you now see how delirious the current system is huh

here you are giving me numbers and statistics of how the current bad implementation of the quota system is being carried out and you expect that to serve as some sort of justification huh you even mention about a state not being cheated! that's how far down the rabbit hole you've sunk.

you need to first unplug dude

Let me give you a final education as I do not want to be tied up with Igbos who are determined to whine about other people's property, while trying to appear as a victim of injustice.

If the North picks up overnight and start scoring high in these entry exams, their cut off mark will be as high as Lagos or Anambra or Delta, but the number of Northerners admitted would still be the same because they are only filling their guaranteed quota without taking away what belongs to another.

If Anambra state or Abia state suddenly starts scoring low, by extension their cut off mark could fall as low as 20, but they will still fill up their guaranteed quota with that low mark, without any state taking what belongs to them.

Is this very plain principle of quota too complex for the educated Igbo to grasp?
the more I read these post of Ÿours the more I shake my head......and to think that you are making sense while one dude acÞually concurred with your illogical argument beats my imagination.......

Go and change the laws that established the unity schools and stop making noise where it is of no relevance. It is not a school of merit or for the gifted. It is a unity school for National Integration.

If you are not interested, get your kids into private schools where you may actually get admission by academic merit, but you would also pay the true worth of the education received, unlike the subsidized unity school.

Why must you always covet what does not belong to you?
You have your quota, they have theirs, is that too difficult for a greedy soul to deal with?

I have no time for tribal arguments on a Monday.

Do you ever give yourself any rest from tribal agitations?

Raymondenyi:
Following the seeming backwardness, vile and crude nature of the black race every and anywhere they are found in comparison to the other races, I had to delve into research to understand Why, and it was revealed , the black race are the descendants of the cursed son of Noah, reason why no matter how we try, we never progress, we have been cursed to stay so and be servile and enslaved to other races

Gen 9:1-29 Noah had 3 sons, Japhet , shem and Ham, after the flood, Noah drank wine and laid Naked in his tent. Ham the youngest son first saw the father naked, and laughed then went to call his two brothers outside, Japhet and shem, they came turned their eyes away, and clothed their father, when Noah became sober and realised what had happened , he cursed Canaan (the son of Ham) saying "a servant of servant shall you be unto your brothers ; and he blessed Japhet and shem, saying blessed shall ye God's be and ye shall dwell in tents and canaan shall be your servant"

As we all know, the representative of ancient black race where the Egyptians, as they were described in the bible then as comprising of black
Gen 10:6 named the sons of ham cush (which are ethiopians), Mizraims (Egyptians) , phut (ancient Libyans or Somalians) and Canaan...

In The book of psalms (the song of david) the land of Egypt was used interchangeably with "Land of Ham" psalm 78:51 , psalm 105:23 , psalm 106:22 ....

You can also Google "progenitor of black race" and see for yourselves results that comes up.....

Little reason why the black man have always never progressed, and are still being used as slaves by other races and even amongst themselves, they can never govern themselves with strict laws, the only race that lives like pigs, their environments are synonymous with dirts, they are never creative and make nothing only to consume from other races, they never make their clime inhabitable but will feel okay running over to foreign land to serve as slaves, they are quick to call in foreigners and tag the "expartraits" that will undo and enslave their own people in our own land, they (blacks) never make projections beyond 1 year and do not care as they can always run to their foreign brothers for aids...always programed to be servile and slaves to other races

You should understand this trend is not only Africa, but all back communities everywhere, the black Americans , black Indians, Jamaica n's, Haiti , irrespective of their environment that curse has always followed them.... .

The Bible is indeed a holy book that unravels mysteries we don't inderstand
I will agree that the black man has his problems but when u say cursed, then you are taking it too far.....meaning you actually believe what the white mans impression of us is......that's so sad

You all know my stanch on this therefore, I don't need to address it. I've always wanted to make a this thread just never really did so but as I was reading a thread, I came in contact to a statement made by ezepromoe which promoted to do it

Although Eze is ikwerre and his statement was pertaining to his people, I noticed a slight similarities between what he said and what goes on in anioma as well. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe there is any similarities between ikwerre and anioma. In fact Una know my own opinion about ikwerres but his statement caught my interest
For awhile I've noticed a high number of yoloba and hsusa becoming the spokesperson of anioma on NL. Highlighting the denials within our groups and magnifying it to create a division between us and SE. Recently I've equally noticed SE dancing to the tone of this music. The message isn't towards SW, North or whoever, I could careless about those people, this message is to SE who decide to pay attention to what others are saying than what your brothers says. Whenever Una have one altercation with one denier from anioma, you guys are so quick to magnify it and accuse us all for it, some of Una are quick to throw us under the bus and continue doing so until with I, melzabull, etc etc comes in and prove our pride of igbo...a task I believe we really shouldn't be doing all the time just to appease this distrust SE has for us. Only God knows why there is even a distrust from SE to Anioma. On our side, we font have any distrust to Una. For awhile, we've told una repeatedly exactly what ezepromoe wrote in the part I bolded, the anioma denials are actually a minority. You hear them the most because they are the loudest and love seeking attention. They desire to be seen and desire to be heard, some of which are those known to rewrite history. It is something we have within our community and albeit it is something we are working to overcome, listening to sw and north who are trying to mischievous, and constantly accusing us for something a minority does will more likely create the tension and push others into the direction you speaking against...an example is emeka esogbue. We have a high significant of our people that are proud Igbo and yes we equally have those that are not but don't throw all of us under the bus because of a few minorities. We got Una back, even during Biafra war, we joined and fought alongside Una despite Una deliberately left us with the enemies, we still fought alongside Una. Throughout history, we've always had your back and we expect you people to do the same as the SE and SS Igbo politicians are doing. Do not let the mischievous people destroy a long age brothership. I hope you take this appeal to heart and this is a message not to all SE but to those that does what I described...for example lygn19 and his likes
why do u disturb yourself with issues like these? I for once as an individual do ot believe in all these I am igbo and I am not igbo issues.........as far as am concerned, igbo is igbo but some times I wonder why igbos in delta always lay much emphasis on I am "delta igbo"? It doesn't make sense to me........igbo is igbo......if one says I am igbo, and when asked, says from delta state then I think that's more acceptable but saying delta igbo means not being sure.........the ikwerris and some very few delta igbos think that by denying being igbos makes them less igbo but I say to them that the itsekiris, ijaws , urhobos who they share the same state with call them igbos with no appologies this I have heard and seen so many times........well, I am informed to a particular level and a non igbo or even an igbo person cannot tell me who is igbo or change my view about who my tribesmen are.......and please some of my igbo brothers should under stand that there is nothing like real or fake igbos.....thanxx

xtrorse:
Gowon, Awolowo, Ejoor, Adebayo, Mobolaji Johnson, Katsina, Wey and all the groups that supported and advised the Federal Government of Nigeria to renege on the accords agreed upon in Aburi, Ghana were responsible for the 1967-70 Civil War, alongside their murderous kinsmen who killed innocent Easterners in revenge for an act done by a misguided group of soldiers comprising both Southerners and Northerners.

Ojukwu tried making peace, and called for peace-talk in a neutral ground hence the Aburi Accord, but Gowon and his co-travellers violated the agreement reached. If Ojukwu wanted war he wouldn't have called for peace talk in Ghana but the declaration of Biafra was inevitable as the killing of Easterners continued across the country. Ojukwu never asked for war! Ojukwu only declared Biafra when over thirty thousand corpses littered the Northern region in the aftermath of the January 15 1966 coup. Gowon and his cohorts declared the civil war! And Benjamin Adekunle, one the Nigerian soldier, later attested to the fact that Nigeria declared war because of oil in the Eastern region and not for the unity of the country!

Why didn't the July 1966 counter-coup plotters just wipe out the Eastern political class and call it a day. Aguiyi Ironsi did nothing deserving death yet they killed him. Ironsi was too much of a peacemaker and he died making useless peace, appeasing the Northerners. The counter coup plotters simply wanted a war and they sure got one.
Bear in mind there was no war before the pogrom of 1966 started in the North.
So why resort to maiming and killing innocent Easterners cum civilians. Has the killings stopped till date? NO!

The February 13, 1976 Dimka-led coupists came from Benue and Plateau region. They assassinated Murtala Mohammed then Head of State, yet there was no genocide carried against the Middle-belt people. Why was same treatment not given to the ethnic groups of the Dimka-led coupists that committed same offence? It's simply hypocrisy!
It is even against the military rule to harm the innocent civilians during coup.

According to the warped logic of hypocrites any time there is a revolution or a coup the ethnic groups of the coup plotters should be singled out for ethnic cleansing!

What did other Nigerians and their leaders do when Igbos where being massacred across the North in 1966? Did any of them come to the aid of the people of Igbodo and Asaba in 1967 when genocide was being carried out on them by the same people who are now having nightmares to still have Igbos in same country with them?

Ethnomusicolist Charles Keil, who was visiting
Nigeria in 1966, recounted:

"The pogroms I witnessed in Makurdi, Nigeria
(late Sept. 1966) were foreshadowed by
months of intensive anti-Ibo and anti-
Eastern conversations among Tiv, Idoma,
Hausa and other Northerners resident in
Makurdi, and, fitting a pattern replicated in
city after city, the massacres were led by the
Nigerian army. Before, during and after the
slaughter, Col. Gowan could be heard over
the radio issuing 'guarantees of safety' to all
Easterners, all citizens of Nigeria, but the
intent of the soldiers, the only power that
counts in Nigeria now or then, was painfully
clear. After counting the disemboweled
bodies along the Makurdi road I was
escorted back to the city by soldiers who
apologized for the stench and explained
politely that they were doing me and the
world a great favor by eliminating Ibos.”

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_Civil_War

[b]Anybody defending the atrocious acts of their forebears against the Igbo Nation is wicked to state the least. It's in vain trying hard to deny the genocide committed against the Igbos.

Ojukwu defended Igbos from ethnic cleansing no matter the attempts of hypocrites to cover up their evils.
Ojukwu will forever remain a legend amongst Igbos regardless of what the same people who were responsible for what Ojukwu stood against thinks.

If this people are sincere they would have restructured the system or have its inhabitants choose and chart their own destinies. Strange bedfellows are not meant to be together!

The real enemies of progress are the proponents of the status quo in the Nigerian system, and are accustomed to spreading lies and wicked propaganda.

Anyone who supports in the smallest ways the sustenance of a criminal system that has only brought shame, waste, killings and backwardness, should be charged with crimes against humanity.

It doesn't matter how long it takes, Igbos shall achieve their goals.

“The right to development is a fundamental right by virtue of which every human person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to and enjoy economic, social and cultural development.

“It is a right which includes the exercise of full sovereignty over national resources, self determination, popular participation in development and equality of opportunity."

“Karma comes after everyone eventually. You can't get away with screwing people over your whole life, I don't care who you are. What goes around comes around. That's how it works. Sooner or later the universe will serve you the revenge that you deserve.” - Jessica Brod
