PoliticsAirtel Ranked Nigeria’s Best In Broadband Coverage Speed – Report by Mecka(op): 5:22pm On Jun 13, 2021
A newly published report has ranked
Airtel Nigeria, a leading mobile
telecommunications company, as
Nigeria’s best in broadband coverage
speed, following a nationwide
broadband assessment by Umlaut.
Airtel confirmed this development in a
statement it issued in Lagos, on
Sunday.
Umlaut is an international company full-
service cross-industry, end-to-end that
offers advisory and fulfilment services to
clients globally.
Hakan Ekmen, Chief Executive Officer,
Umlaut Telecommunications, said that
based on their assessment, Airtel
achieved the best-rated broadband
coverage and user download speed
among other mobile network operators
in the country.
“In our nationwide assessment, 82.8 per
cent of the urban build-up areas and
83.9 per cent of the population areas
were tested.
“An extensive analysis revealed that
263,000 users contributed 707.4-million
samples in 24 weeks from October 2020
until early April 2021.
“We concluded that Airtel Nigeria is Best
in the Tests, achieving the highest
Umlaut score with 697 points, Ekmen
said
‘`Airtel scored the highest with 697
points, while MTN emerged second with
663 points, 9mobile with 591 and Glo
with 486 points.
“The tests were carried out with
Umlaut’s crowdsourcing methodology,
which was used to evaluate the mobile
networks in Nigeria”, he added.
Ekmen noted that umlaut’s
sophisticated methodology enabled the
results to be compared across network
operators globally, adding that the
transparency it provided not only
boosted network quality and
performance, but also improved
experience for every customer.
He commended Airtel for emerging the
best-rated, citing this remarkable feat as
a positive step towards attaining digital
equality in Africa.
However, Ekmen added that while the
results in Nigeria were quite impressive,
there was still room for improvement in
global comparison.
The competition in Nigeria’s telecoms
landscape was working favourably for
consumers in the country, he noted.

Barcelona between 2008 and 2016 was stronger than Barcelona of the early 2000
I will say Madrid of the past 10yrs was stronger than Madrid of the 2000s slightly
Man Utd 2008 to 2013 was stronger than Man Utd pre 2008
Teams like PSG and City have also gotten stronger

Villareal was not better than Sevilla of recent times
Valencia of those times was not better than Atletico of recent times

I will say Chelsea got weaker if we compare the 2000s vs recent years
While teams like Milan and Arsenal got poorer significantly
nooo! I disagree. Aha What are you saying. A man U that managed to win two epl titles despite all odds is no where near a man U that won one ucl, multiple league and cup laurels including three back to back to back premiership titles with ease.

I have repeatedly stong champions league teams was poor then but you prefer to pretend and only see things your way, we were meeting small teams in R16 now you meet top teams, game is more competitive now

Also Epl teams are struggling now because the premier league is more difficult, you can't rest players for champions league games, teams are no longer afraid of big teams, I have tried using different metrics to explain this thing for you to see but you prefer to work with tm closer to fans they no longer look an find f
The difference between then and now is that we have teams who have evolved to become tough and formidable in europe. Back in the day, the likes of napoli, atalanta, psg, mancity, spurs, atletico madrid, lille, leipzig were no where to be found among elite sides in europe. Back then you had real madrid thrashing teams like leicester city six nil and nothing will happen

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Finidi George has
revealed what prompted his goal celebration style
at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Recall that Finidi netted Nigeria’s opening goal in
the second group match against Greece and
trotted towards the corner flag to celebrate the
now-infamous urinating dog goal celebration.
Finidi in an interview with TribalFootball stated
that he could hardly explain what prompted the
goal celebration.
“My celebration at the World Cup was not
planned.
https://i1.wp.com/www.completesports.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/finidi.jpg
“I did not even know that I was going to score at
the world cup, but after scoring the goal, I wanted
to celebrate and I just did that spontaneously, and
till date people still talk about the celebration.
“I just got carried away after the scoring a goal at
the World Cup.”
Nigeria, however, was knocked out in the Round
of 16 by Italy after losing 2-1.

The world’s best athletes have plenty of opportunities to bank on their popularity. Besides lucrative sports contracts, most of them earn even more significant profits from heavy endorsement deals.

According to data presented by SafeBettingSites.com, Connor McGregor, as the highest-paid athlete in the world, racked up on and off-field earnings of around $180 million this year, more than Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or LeBron James.

McGregor Earned $158M in Endorsements, Three Times More than Cristiano Ronaldo

McGregor’s performance earnings came from his appearance at UFC 257 in January 2021, in which he was knocked out by Dustin Poirier in the second round. Despite the disappointing showing, the MMA fighter could still boost his income through various endorsements and sponsorship deals, including those with Reebok and Beats by Dre. His primary source of off-field income came through the sale of his whiskey brand Proper No. Twelve to Proximo Spirits.

The Forbes data revealed that Conor McGregor earned $158 million in endorsements this year, three times more than Cristiano Ronaldo and double of LeBron James, as the athlete with the second-largest endorsement earnings globally.

As well as winning an incredible number of trophies, Lionel Messi tops the list of the highest-paid footballers. With $130 million in this year’s earnings, Argentinian footballer ranked as the second highest-paid athlete globally. Statistics show Messi has one of the two highest salary earnings, bringing him $97 million in 2021. Endorsement deals, including a lifetime sponsorship deal with Adidas, and deals with Pepsi, Lay’s, and Budweiser, brought him another $33 million this year.

The Portuguese superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the third highest-paid athlete globally. His on-field earnings hit $70 million this year, $27 million less than Messi.

However, the famous footballer, who boasts five Champions League titles to his name, had off-field earnings of $50 million thanks to a lifetime deal with Nike and endorsements with DAZN, Electronic Arts, and Tag Heuer.

Three out of Ten Highest-Paid Athletes are Soccer Players

An American football player, Dak Prescot ranked fourth on the Forbs list of the highest-paid athletes globally. The Dallas Cowboys` quarterback earned $107.5 million in 2021, $73 million less than the first-ranked Collin McGregor. However, statistics show Prescot has the highest on-field earnings, bringing him $97 million this year.

Basketball superstar, LeBron James, rounds the top five list with $96.5 million in this year’s earnings. His endorsement deals make two-thirds of that value.

The Forbes data also revealed that three out of ten highest-paid athletes globally are soccer players. Football players took two spots on this list, the same as basketball players. MMA, auto racing, and tennis all have one athlete in the top ten list.

PoliticsHow Drylands Contribute To Economic Development – Experts by Mecka(op): 11:04am On Jun 06, 2021
Environmental and development experts
have provided insights on how drylands
can contribute to the growth of
agriculture and the larger economy in
Africa.

The experts spoke at the first-ever digital
Global Landscape Forum (GLF)
conference held between June 2nd and
3rd. The major theme of the conference
focused around Africa’s drylands and
integrative restoration practices.
While delivering a keynote speech on
Africa’s perspective on ecosystem
restoration at the conference, the
Executive Secretary of the United
Nations Convention to Combat
Desertification(UNCCD), Ibrahim Thiaw,
explained that drylands are significant to
economic growth in countries across
Africa,
Mr Thiaw also debunked
misconceptions he claimed were
undermining the potentials and
uniqueness of Africa’s dryland amidst
ongoing restoration campaigns across
the world

According to him, claims that drylands
do not contribute much to the economy
are untrue because in most drylands,
people have lands as their only assets.
He argued that in Africa, up to 70 per
cent of the population depends on the
primary sector, including drylands that
represent up to 45 per cent.

Agriculture, livestock, inland fisheries,
and tourism revenues are seamlessly
possible in drylands, he explained.
Mr Thiaw stated that there’s a need to
debunk myths being concocted and
circulated about dryland regions across
the world.

Drylands
According to Aridity Index (AI), the
United Nations’ Environment
Programme ( UNEP ) explained drylands
as the ratio between average annual
precipitation and potential
evapotranspiration, noting that drylands
are lands with an AI of less than 0.65.

Mr Thiaw said the myth that drylands
are not productive are untrue, adding
that they provide the inhabitants with
unique products and produce such as
cereals, animal feed and non timber
products.

He noted that almost 3 billion people live
on the drylands globally. This people, he
said, include 100 million pastoralists,
adding that half of the world’s range
land is found in dryland.

“The cotton industries would not survive
without cotton coming from dryland,” he
said.

“The world is just about to discover the
nutritional and health values of shea
butter, baobab and other cosmetic
products that are uniquely produced in
drylands.”

Speaking further, the UNCCD official
also said the claim that drylands are not
rich in biodiversity, and that they have
little to offer in the climate crisis, is not
true.

“The largest terrestrial behaviour found
in the magnificent savannahs of African
to the tiniest microorganism found in the
large diversity of dryland habitats
(Savannahs, ponds, rivers, wetland etc)
are in the drylands,” he said.

Mr Thiaw noted that the large open
spaces in dryland are major carbon
sinks, adding that their management
and mitigation provides a range of
opportunities for organisms.

Similarly, the environmentalist said it is
not true ‘drylands are wasteland, and
they are not worth investing in’, adding
that dryland harbors major extractive
industries from oil production in the
Middle-east to mineral extractions in dry
Africa and Australia.

“The world is amazed by the clean
energy potentials found in drylands,” Mr
Thiaw said, adding that drylands are
sources of healthy products and tourist
attraction because of their unique
landscape, wildlife and great diversity of
people.

He noted that people living in dryland
areas use little biomass and they are
generally water efficient.

“People living in drylands either scarcely
use the environment or they are forced
to migrate because there would be no
resources to sustain them.

“Change is homemade; it’s time to
change our narratives on drylands in
Africa. It’s time to reset, rethink Africa’s
development and it is time to turn
challenges into opportunities,” he said.

Insights
Providing additional insights in her
remarks, Inger Anderson, Under-
Secretary-General, United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP),
explained that in order to reverse the
damages that humanity has caused to
the natural world, “there is an urgent
need to mobilise and make a social
movement”.

The official called for “a mass
movement, a youth movement, a
finance movement and a science
movement to speed up Africa’s dryland
restoration efforts”.

“It is a great opportunity to start
delivering on sustainable development
goals so that we can create that world
of prosperity, equality and of peace,”
she said.

Meanwhile, Salima Mohamoudou, a
research associate at World Resource
Institute(WRI), explained that ‘copy and
paste solutions’ have proven not to be
the best option to explore in drylands
restoration efforts across the continent.

“There is no one-size-fits-all option.
What has worked elsewhere like in the
UK and U.S. may not work well for
Africa,” she said.
