Andy Murray’s achievements over the past 12 months have landed him a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list.

The Brit enjoyed the finest season of his career in 2016, landing a second Wimbledon title, Olympic gold and the year-end world No 1 ranking for the first time.

Music they say is food for the soul – it’s effect sometimes eliciting strong emotions in humans, among them love, joy, hate, regret or anger.

As music has become an essential part of living, we do not only enjoy the soothing sounds that is pleasing to our ears but also idolize the person (or people) behind the music.

Rock bands in Europe and America have a cult like following, selling out concerts to star struck die-hard fans and in Nigeria, the likes of Don Jazzy and Yemi Alade have used the fame found from music to position themselves as influencers to win corporate endorsements.

What am I driving at? There’s a strong attachment between a musician and his audience and the loss of one musician is often seen as a great loss to the people who listen to his or her music (remember Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston’s death?).

As the year 2016 comes to an end, we look at Five iconic singers that died in 2016.

Prince

Born Prince Rogers Nelson, the ‘Purple rain‘ singer died on April 21, 2016 and was 57 when he passed away, in his Paisley Park Minnesota recording studio. Autopsy reports showed that Prince died from fentanyl (a very powerful painkiller). Prince had a flamboyant dress style and sex appeal and was regarded as a true American icon.

David Bowie

English singer, songwriter and actor. He was active in music for over five decades. Bowie who died on January 10th 2016 received 9 platinum album certifications, 11 gold and 8 silver in the UK and 5 platinum and 7 gold certifications in the US where he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has made it clear retiring is not on his mind just yet and has joked he could play on until he is 65-years-old!

The Italy international will turn 39 in January and has a contract with the Serie A champions until the end of next season.

However, Buffon, who has previously suggested he would call time on his career after the 2018 World Cup, is adamant he still feels young and plans to keep going for the forseeable future.

“I still do not feel like an old guy at the age of 38,” Buffon told Tuttosport.

“Will I say farewell to the game in 10 years’ time or in 15 years’ time? Who knows, I might retire at the age of 65…

“I have not lost an awful lot in my life, but the defeats have taught me more than the victories. Whenever I lose, I focus on the ability of my opponent and on the mistakes I made.

The former Juventus midfielder will play against his older sibling in Europe’s second-tier European competition next year.

Paul Pogba has been handed a dream Europa League last 32 draw as he’ll come up against his brother, Florentin Pogba, who plays for Saint-Etienne.

The world record signing, who returned to Old Trafford after four years at Juventus this summer, is three years younger than Florentin.

While Pogba is a well-known France international, Florentin opted to play for African nation Guinea – where he was born in 1990 but left when he was eight months old – after making a few appearances for France at Under-20 level.

Both Pogbas were regulars for their teams in the Europa League group stage this season, with Florentin racking up five appearances to Paul’s six.

Florentin, who plays in defence unlike his midfield-based brother, has been at Saint-Etienne since 2012 and was briefly linked with Aston Villa last year.

The Pogba siblings are certainly not the first – or most famous – to come up against each at club or country level.

Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has given notice of a 3-day nation-wide warning strike from the first week of January 2017, over unresolved labour issues with multinationals operating in the oil and gas industry.

President of the union, Mr. Igwe Achese, in a statement, yesterday, said the decision was taken at the end of the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday.

He warned that the 3-day warning strike was preparatory to a nation-wide strike if there was no intervention by the Federal Government.

The union stated that the date in January would be communicated to all its members but advised them to start wearing red bands to work from next week while members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, had been instructed also to put green leaves on their tankers as a protest preparatory for the commencement of the 3-day warning strike next month.

NUPENG insisted that it would resist any divestment by the multinationals that “does not carry the union along, especially in OML 53 and 55 operated by Chevron and now OML 30.”

According to the statement: “The union stresses that it believes that whatever goodwill government has to encourage investors to come should not lead to job loses but job creation.

The unresolved labour related issues which made the union to issue a 21-day ultimatum for the Federal Government’s intervention include the non-payment of terminal benefits to 48 contract staff and 250 contract staff terminated in Lagos and Port Harcourt by the Nigeria Agip Oil Company, NAOC.

Nigeria’s women’s team are continuing to refuse to leave a hotel in Abuja until they are paid allowances and bonuses for winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Falcons, who clinched their eighth African title on Saturday with a 1-0 win over hosts Cameroon, are protesting over the Nigeria Football Federation’s failure to pay them US$17,150 per player for their success.

It is alleged the NFF had also pledged to pay outstanding allowances for qualifying and their win bonuses [US$6,500] before the start of the competition.

One of the players told BBC Sport that their sit-in at the Agura hotel in the capital will not end until they receive all bonuses, which totals US$23,650 per player.

“We are not leaving this hotel and we have not been told exactly when we are going to get paid,” the player, who insisted on anonymity, told BBC Sport.

“The plan is to stay here until we all receive the money because the moment we leave there will be no opportunity to get it again.”

Singer Sia and husband Erik Anders Lang have split after two years of marriage.

The Weeknd – stressing that he’s now ‘in control’ – first smoked weed at age 11 before moving onto cocaine, MDMA, painkillers, Xanax, mushrooms, ketamine, and cough syrup back in his Toronto hometown. ‘When I had nothing to do but make music, it was very heavy.’

‘Drugs were a crutch for me. There were songs on my first record that were seven minutes long, rambling – whatever thoughts I was having when I was under the influence at the time. I can’t see myself doing that now.’

The high school drop out sorted himself out and forged a successful career in music, he has gotten his mother, Samra a car and a house. He said:

‘I couldn’t ever go back home without being something. I probably would never have gone back home if…That was definitely a big motivation. To get back home, and not empty-handed.’

Speaking during a Chat with Encomium magazine, the 31-year-old made it clear that she is no longer bitter about her failed marriage and that anything could happen.

“You can’t show to the world that you are heartbroken, you can’t show to the world that your marriage is not perfect because people would look at you and think there is something wrong with you. But there is nothing wrong with that person.

“She is walking through life. She is becoming what she is supposed to be. It is important that we unmask ourselves, let go off this tradition because people die in silence. There is more to life than the shame.”

The Federal Government has granted officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC, the authority to carry arms while on duty.

Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, disclosed this while speaking at the end of the year management strategy session for the parastatal in Abuja this weekend.

According to Oyeyemi, the need for the officers to bear arms arose from the increased number of violent attacks and killing of some of its operatives while on duty.

According to Oyeyemi, over 70 of its personnel have been killed in 2016 alone as a result of violent attacks by angry motorists. Oyeyemi said the FRSC Establishment Act gives power to the corps to bear arms and that the Federal Government had earlier approved that, with about 5,000 personnel already undergoing training on firearms.

An agreement between the governments of Nigeria and Morocco, anchored by Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers of Nigeria, FEPSAN and a Moroccan company, OCP will yield one million tons of fertilizer through local production for next farming season. This will be a short term solution that will, by a signed agreement also force the price of fertilizer from N8,000 to a low of about N5,000.

Nokia on Thursday, announced its intentions to launch android powered smart phones in first quarter of 2017. The HMD Global, which announced this in a statement said Nokia hopes to become a major player in the global smartphone market.
