Straight sets win for Roger. Great performance, when Federer is playing well it's almost impossible to beat him. Especially since his game, and his variety, are a terrible match-up for Del Potro.

Still, the Tower of Tandil is definitely headed in the right direction, very good tournament overall and he even had his chances yesterday in the first two sets, the scoreline is deceptively loopsided. That said, although Fed played great, there are things Delpo can improve and must improve if he wants to be a genuine threat at Roland Garros:

His forehand is getting closer and closer to the 2009 level and his fitness is also steadily improving. The two main problems are his serve and his return. It's pathetic to see such a big guy with such a weak serve; his serve should be a weapon, giving him tons of free points. Instead, he had only 5 aces, won only 58% of points in his first serve and double faulted on break points. Not good enough. He also could do nothing with Federer's second serve, his returns were not strong or deep at all.

If he can improve these two shots, especially his serve, back to 2009 levels (or better), then he will be ready to fight with Djokovic, Nadal and Federer. I still think he had a great tournament, played his best tennis since his injury and can obviously only get better, so it's an encouraging tournament. And let's also not forget that in 2009 he lost to Fed in the quarter in Australia 3,0,0 and then ended the year with a Grand Slam title. Good omen perhaps?

As for the semifinal, I hope Roger beats Rafa. Would love a Federer vs Djokovic final. But given the history between these two, Rafa is obviously the favorite. But if Roger can play like he did against Delpo, I wouldn't be surprised to see the great Swiss in the final.

Messi usually comes out at the beginning of the year like this.
I've observed him in the last 3 seasons. He is usually stronger in the second half of the season than the first.

Na only God sabi wetin he dey go do for Argentina during Xmas grin
Well, there's a certain Antonella Roccuzo. I guess she gives him some kind of treatment that we may never understand.

Does anyone else think another reason for Messi's great performance was Fabregas being benched? Not that they don't get along or anything but it seems when Fabregas plays, he kinda takes Messi's forward position and Messi drops a bit deeper to help the build up. We saw Messi finally making some runs today rather than passing the ball off to his teammates.

It appears that only the camp nou and santiago bernabeu are the only stadia in la liga that interests Barca players this season. Others are just boring to them, hence they put up a scrappy performance that is just enough to avoid defeat.
I hope Malaga is not the same story.

I wish jonathan goodluck. I still feel barca was unfair to him notwithstanding his obvious talent.

Red Bull Salzburg have signed B striker, Jonathan Soriano, for €500k plus another €500k in variables. His contract was gonna run out in the summer.

Good guy. I really like this guy. He's a natural finisher. He can bang in goals. I was always hoping we would one day promote him. He's 26 already though and it's only right he moves somewhere he can play top level, regular football. I Wish him all the best.

Now our B team will be in serious trouble! Rodri and Kiko have been quite poor, as indeed, the whole team.

Jean Marie Dongou have already been promoted from the Juvenil A team to help the team up front.

Mcleo007:
If Cesc cant play the Iniesta role (cos of he's inability to take on defences) and also the Xavi role (his lack of horizontal ball-squaring, as suggested here), what role is he going to play? Obviously, the false 9 position he's played in in a few games hasn't be of standard. So?
Cesc can play the Iniesta role pretty comfortably. I was saying that rather than shift Iniesta out wide on the left, play Sanchez as a CF and play Cesc in what would have been Iniesta's position in midfield, in the classico, it would have been better if Sanchez played on the wings, Iniesta played his normal role and Cesc played as a false 9.
Altintop was showing us a lot of love down the left hand side, giving Iniesta a lot of space but we didn't exploit that advantage enough because Iniesta is wasted as a winger. Sanchez would have ripped Altintop a new one. Fabregas created a lot of chances from midfield, playing some very clever balls but Iniesta would have done exactly the same thing plus his better dribbling would have given us better penetration which we lacked since Messi played deep and I'd rather have Fabregas on the receiving end of those chances than Iniesta whose finishing leaves a lot to be desired.

In our 3-4-3 formation, Cesc plays a 'false 10' behind Messi. With Messi often dropping deep, he moves into the space that Messi has left behind. That's why he's been scoring lots of goals. He plays more or less as a forward.

Was gonna say this but didn't want to sound like one of those who are "blind" to the "immense talent" Biscuit posesses. Smh, una no even talk Cesc to be deployed to a more central role to replace King Xavi, na Busquets. I mean, come on, Bus-bleeping-quets??! Hian!
Cesc cannot play the Xavi role. The few games he has played the Xavi role, we've suffered. I'd rather have Valdes play that role than Cesc. Cesc's lack of horizontal play automatically rules him out of playing that central midfield role and that's why Pep doesn't play him there.
Busquets is the natural heir to Xavi's throne.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Fc Barcelona Fan Thread: "més Que Un Club" by medjai(m): 10:11pm On Jan 19, 2012
It's good to see him finally getting the respect he deserves. He was named in L'Equipe's team of 2011 alongside Alves, Pique, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi.

Over the past two years, he has marked attacking midfielders as Ozil, Rooney, Sneijder or Fabregas and very recently, Ganso, completely out of games. Ever since Busquets made that position his, attacking midfielders have pretty much been non-factors in big games against Barca.

Not only are his marking skills great, he reads the game better than anyone and his passing/distribution is pretty much perfect. Xavi and Iniesta have complete freedom to attack with Busquets shielding them.

We have improved tenfold since Busquets replaced Touré, we are better in possession and less susceptible to counters.

He'll transition into a more central role soon enough and be Xavi's heir, I believe. I don't see anyone else with the potential/style to play Xavi's role in the future. Busquets is not that different today (in terms of role, way of playing) than Xavi was at 23, except I'd say Busquets is definitely a better player than Xavi was back then.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Fc Barcelona Fan Thread: "més Que Un Club" by medjai(m): 10:34am On Jan 19, 2012
So many thoughts on this game. We won, its all good, but honestly I felt there are some issues that really need to be addressed. I mean the fact that our goals came from 2 defenders kind of speaks for itself.

- Pep, you're my man and all but sometimes you do some WTF-inducing stuff. Iniesta on the flank? Alexis in CF? Fabregas taking over Don's space in midfield? Messi in a withdrawn Argentina-esque role? Why?

Iniesta has always looked awkward in that winger position(he did quite well last night though), I mean Altintop, fucking Hamit Altintop did a decent job on him. He should've been our entry point in offense. Alexis would've torn him apart. Alexis utilizes that inside cut followed by the reverse direction dribble that leaves fullbacks stumbling, Altintop would've been shredded by the Chilean machine. Been a while since I saw Iniesta look uncomfortable on the ball, but this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who've watched him play the wing before,

- Watching Messi today was odd. I wasn't sure if the stripes were Blaugrana or light blue and white. He was playing very very deep, mainly due to Alexis occupying the CF position and Fabregas playing an advanced role as well. Sometimes I swear he was only in front of the back 4 + Pinto, it was odd. He had a hard time really imposing his presence on Madrid, maybe it was a plan by Pep perhaps to draw Pepe and Lass out of the hole a bit but I preferred when Messi was taking them on every few minutes. He still made a few key passes + of course the orgasmic assist on Abidal's cool finish.

However there was a nice positive from this game.

- For a minute I wasn't sure if I was watching FC Barcelona but we were actually swinging all the damn corners into the box! I don't know why Pep suddenly decided to do away with those short passes and go for the cross but it was freakin' awesome.

I didn't like how we looked in the final third, we just weren't making shit happen, and there was some frustrating sloppy passing at times as well. I really hope Pep plays Alexis on the freakin' wing and put Iniesta back in his normal role. There's no reason Fabregas should be occupying that space in the midfield, it belongs to the freakin' Don. Having said that Cesc distributed the ball well and played some clever over the top passes ( he's a boss at that), but unfortunately his dribbling is nowhere near Iniesta's level, and that's not a bad thing. Still not sure what's Cesc best position yet but Pep please, please man, don't have Cesc fucking with the Don's turf.

Before I forget, Happy Birthday in arrears, Pep. Madrid's scalp on a plate at the Bernabeu. You couldn't have had a better gift.

One guy to watch out is Alhassane Bangoura who plays for Rayo Vallecano in the La Liga. He's very fast and skillful left winger. He has been outstanding so far this season.

Barcelona's Eric Abidal
signs contract extension -
report
The French defender has
reportedly agreed to a new contract after several months of negotiations
have finally produced a result
By Luis Mira
Eric Abidal - Barcelona
Barcelona left-back Eric Abidal has signed a one-year contract extension with the club, La Vanguardia reports.

The France international's previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season and
negotiations between the player and the club dragged on for months, despite the
defender claiming in November that an agreement had been
reached.
It is believed that Abidal has signed a new contract until
2013, with the option for two more years, to be discussed annually.
The 32-year-old, who joined Barca from Olympique Lyonnais
in 2007, has repeatedly declared that he wants to end
his career at Camp Nou, where he has won three Primera Division titles and two
Champions League crowns, among other trophies.

Fantastic game. This is the best game by far at the Camp Nou this season, so far.
The boys, keeping an eye on Wednesday's big game at the Bernabeu, came out thinking to take it easy, after a fashion. Betis showed them they didn't come to lie down and take another manita. They took the game to us big time, and got back in it. They were unlucky to go a man down, which was really what tilted the game in Barca's favour. Else, they deserved a draw for their efforts, and may even have won it.

I don't know about you guys, but this was the worst performance from Messi I have seen in a long while. Even worse than last week, against Espanyol. He made wrong passing choices all evening, didn't hold the ball up, and was guilty of poor positioning all through the game. Also, this was one night that the 3-4-3 was a wrong playing choice. We are lucky to escape with the win, at home no less.

Hoping for more games like this in La Liga
I thought Messi did quite well last night. He was indeed sloppy atimes, gave the ball away on a couple of occasions and made some poor decisions but still, he was one of our better players.

Fuel subsidy is just one of the few things keeping us alive in this country. When I board a bus for N 150 instead of N 300, I'm enjoying the benefits of subsidy. True, it has been abused but it's govt. responsibility to operate it in such a way that it won't be easily hijacked by some unscrupulous elements.

At some point, subsidy would and should go but not now. It'd be extremely difficult to survive in this country if subsidy goes now. So, let the price go back to N 65
