If this kidnapping is poltically motivated, then it is a plus for Soludo. If it is the usual kidnapping then its a different story. |

Bode George’s Conviction: How Festus Keyamo Floored 5 Senior Advocates October 27, 2009 14:51 (7 hours ago), 2,307 views By Henry Ojelu When the news of Bode George’s conviction broke yesterday, most Nigerians were shocked even as many others are yet to come to terms with how Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo, counsel to EFCC floored 5 SANs who defended George. Before the judgment was delivered yesterday, not many people thought that a political big wig like Chief Bode George could be convicted especially in this era when known corrupt political office holders walk the streets free from justice even in the face of overwhelming evidence. The smiles and laughter on the faces of Bode George’s teeming supporters and family members at the court yesterday could have deceived anyone into believing that they had a fore-knowledge of how the case will go. However, the frowns and cries on their faces four hours after their hero was to jail without an option of fine clearly betrayed their shock and despair. As at today, Bode George and his five co-defendants has tasted their first official 24 hours in Kirikiri Prison as convicts. Their two years sojourn in the infamous prison has only just begun. While the news came as shock to Bode George, his family members, party members and disheartened thugs, most Lagosians received the news with excitement and jubilation. To them it was a well deserved judgment. Several copies of P.M.NEWS which broke the news were instantly swept off the newsstand by readers. Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Ikeja High Court who presided over matter that lasted 15 months, sentenced all the six accused persons to two years each on seven counts of abuse of office and another six months for 28 charges bordering on disobedience of lawful order. The judge held that all the accused persons were guilty of splitting numerous contracts as members of NPA board from 2001 to 2003. According to the judge, there was incontrovertible evidence that all the six accused persons intentionally and knowingly condoned the splitting of contracts. Also, Justice Oyewole held that Bode George and his co-accused disregarded lawful order passed to them by the Ministry of Transport stipulating a new approval limit of contracts in all government parastatals including the NPA. According to the judge, all the accused persons in their evidence acknowledged receiving the said order from the Ministry of Transport but chose by their own volition to disregard the order. He, however, held them not liable for contract inflation. Most PDP supporters in the court room burst into tears as Justice Oyewole pronounced the judgement. Most of them tried to provoke security men around the court into a fight. While kudos must be given to the judge for it boldness in deciding such a high profile case fearlessly, one man who also needs commendation is the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) prosecutor, Mr Festus Keyamo. He diligently prosecuted the case for the commission for 15 months. Up against Festus Keyamo in the matter which lasted for 18 months, were five Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN). They are Chief Tunji Ayanlaja (SAN), Mr. Bambo Adesanya (SAN), Chief Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), Otunba K.K. Kalejaye (SAN), Mr. Dele Adesina (SAN) and Chief J.K. Gadzama (SAN). Four of the senior advocates appeared for Bode George alone while the remaining two appeared for the other defendants. From the beginning of the case not many people gave Keyamo any chance of winning, especially when he was up against notable senior advocates. No doubt, the final resolution of the matter in favour of the EFCC has shown that he was equal to the task. Justice Oyewole, while delivering his judgment intermittently acknowledged how the prosecution witness proved the allegations beyond reasonable doubt. Of the 68 count charge brought against them 47 of the charges were in favour of the prosecution while 21 were in favour of the defendants. In his short comment to the court before the defendants were sentenced, Keyamo stated that the decision of the court on the matter will sent warning signal to corrupt public office holders who think they can abuse the offices they hold in trust and evade justice. This is indeed a well deserved victory for Nigerians, the EFCC and Festus Keyamo. |

Sorrow, tears trail Bode George’s conviction By OLA AGBAJE and FAITH HASSAN Tuesday, October 27, 2009 Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Tears, wailing and anger trailed the conviction of Chief Bode George, on Monday, as his teeming supporters who had come in solidarity with him were full of sorrow and despair. Indeed, some came in the popular aso-ebi and with drums but their hope of carrying their mentor home in triumph was shattered as the court pronounced the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Chieftain and other members of the board of the Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA) guilty as charged. But for the heavy security presence mounted by the police, the court environment could have been turned into a war zone. PDP faithful, especially youths, could not hold their temper when Chief George in a spotless white flowing agbada was being led to the waiting prison van around 2.30pm. However, the vigilant policemen remained calm despite of the tense atmosphere. On their part, the women burst into uncontrollable tears, rained curses on those responsible for the fate that befell their champion. Several photo-journalists and reporters had to run for cover when the party loyalists dared them to take pictures of the convicts on their way to the waiting prison van. One unidentified man was knocked down by hoodlums suspected to be party thugs. A lawyer who was unfortunate was mercilessly beaten as his wigs and gowns were used to wrestle him down in theheavy rain. He was dealt several blows before the police came to rescue him from his assailants. Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of Lagos high court, Ikeja had found George and the other five defendants guilty on 35 counts of the 68-count charge of conspiracy, contract splitting and inflation preferred against them. Others convicted and sentenced along with the People Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain include former managing director of NPA, Architect Aminu Dabo, Captain Abidoye, Alhaji Aminu Tafida, Alhaji Zanna Maidaribe and Engineer Sule Aliyu. Throughout the 14-month trial, supporters had always been coming in droves in their aso-ebi attires. However, the defence team led by Tunji Ayanlaja (SAN) had indicated the intention to appeal against the judgment and also to seek bail pending appeal for the convicts. |
