Nairaland General › Judge Grants Oscar Pistorius Bail...free To Walk For Now by Melahou(op): 1:08pm On Sep 12, 2014
Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- A judge has found Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide, the South African term for unintentionally -- but unlawfully -- killing a person. It's akin to negligent killing.
Friday's verdict comes a day after Judge Thokozile Masipa cleared Pistorius of murder in the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
His sentencing starts on October 13, the judge said after granting him bail.
The customary maximum prison sentence for culpable homicide is 15 years, but a typical sentence is five to eight years, said Kelly Phelps, a CNN legal analyst.
Sentencing could be weeks away and will come after more legal argument.
The verdict also dealt with three other charges, all weapons-related.

Nairaland General › FALSE EBOLA ALERT: Nollywood Actor Arrested For Placing Hoax Call To Arik Airlin by Melahou(op): 12:20pm On Sep 12, 2014
Nollywood Thespian, Kingsley Chris Bassey, has been reportedly arrested for disrupting an Arik Airline flight after the actor was said to have made a false Ebola alert that a passenger aboard had been infected with the deadly virus. Bassey placed a call to an Arik Air flight from Enugu to Lagos claiming that a female passenger who was travelling on the flight was infected with the Ebola. When she was eventually tested for the virus the result came back negative prompting the airline to request for the arrest of the actor. According to the airline, “about 1.05p.m. on 29 August, a certain man from Enugu, called the airline’s customer call centre to alert the airline that his girlfriend who was under quarantine for the EVD had escaped and was on board flight W3 611 from Enugu to Lagos.”
“Immediately the flight landed at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) in Ikeja, Lagos, Arik Air’s ground staff who had been placed on alert approached the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) medical personnel, but the FAAN officials at GAT said they didn’t have the requisite equipment to screen passengers for the Ebola virus symptoms.” “The aircraft was therefore taxied to the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport. There, the Port Heath officials supervised the disembarking of the passengers and therefore directed the female passenger to be transferred to the clinic for checks. “The lady was later discovered to be free of Ebola symptoms after thorough examination. She then told Arik Air personnel that her boyfriend who made the malicious call from Enugu did that to smear her name because they had a misunderstanding.” Bassey would be charged to court on Monday, 15 September, for raising a false alarm which disrupted the operations of the airline.

Nairaland General › Ali Modu Sheriff: Presidency Is Being Economical With The Truth – APC by Melahou(op): 12:12pm On Sep 12, 2014
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Presidency of being economical with the truth in its response to condemnation of President Goodluck Jonathan for “hobnobbing” with accused Boko Haram sponsor, Ali Modu Sheriff.
In a statement issued in Dubai on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said that the Presidency’s stout defence of Sheriff’s presence at President Jonathan’s meeting with host President, Idris Deby of Chad, and the fact that the Presidency’s statement was coordinated with the one by Sheriff’s spokesman, has shown that the APC is right to have called for the trial of Sheriff and other alleged Boko Haram sponsors by the International Criminal Court (ICC), instead of the Nigerian security agencies which are under the Jonathan spell.

It said President Jonathan has not got the liver to investigate and prosecute the accused, who are his friends, adding, “How can you prosecute a person who accompanies you on a high level security meeting to a foreign head of state?”
“The Presidency said the security agencies are investigating Sheriff and that the President will not interfere, but what message was the President sending to the security agencies by circulating the picture of the accused with himself? Is that a subtle message to the security agencies that the accused is a friend of the President hence he is untouchable?

“The Presidency said Sheriff has a long standing business in Chad. Is the presidency not aware of the memo sent home by the Nigerian Defence Adviser in Chad concerning Sheriff? Why didn’t the Presidency tell Nigerians whether or not the investigation recommended by the Defence Adviser over Sheriff’s alleged sponsorship of Boko Haram was ever carried out, and if so what was the outcome? APC queried.

It insisted that President Jonathan exhibited palpable indiscretion by allowing himself to be photographed with an accused terrorism sponsor, Ali Modu Sheriff, while on a foreign trip to rally support for his country’s anti-terrorism efforts.
“It is really irrelevant whether or not the President took Sheriff along to Chad or he met him there. What matters and what the entire world saw, through the picture that was widely circulated, was that Sheriff sat in with President Jonathan and President Deby at their meeting. That was the clincher.

“The Presidency, in its reaction to the global condemnation of the President’s unholy alliance with an alleged Boko Haram sponsor, should have realized that while President Jonathan has definitely subjected Nigerians to the most harrowing experience, they are not stupid yet.

“Why would the President even allow Sheriff into the venue of his meeting with President Deby? Can anyone just go and be sitting with President Jonathan in a meeting with the Chadian President just because the fellow happens to be in the Chadian capital at the time? What happened to security clearance, protocol etc.?

“Is the presidency telling Nigerians that if President Jonathan were visiting the South African President Jacob Zuma, and Atiku Abubakar, who is well known to be a good friend of President Zuma, also happens to be in Pretoria at the same time, he will simply drive up to the venue and be part of the meeting? The truth is that President Jonathan was wrong to have showcased Sheriff, an accused Boko Haram sponsor, as a face of his Administration while on a foreign trip to rally support against terrorism, unless of course the President wanted to send a subtle signal to those investigating the allegation,” APC said

Crime › Liberian Woman Found Hanging At Isheri-Oke In Lagos by Melahou(op): 12:04pm On Sep 12, 2014
There was confusion on Bankole Street, Isheri-Oke, Lagos on Friday morning when residents woke up to the sight of a woman hanging on a tree.

The woman, popularly called Kate in the area, was found dead in a black sweater and orange skirt under a pear tree.

Our correspondent, who also visited the scene, gathered from the residents that the woman did not live on the street.

Residents who spoke to our correspondent also said that the woman was a Liberian who worked in a sachet water factory before she died.

While they said that the woman had been sickly for some time, the residents said she did not appear to have any problem with anyone in the community.

But after the outbreak of the Ebola disease that was brought to Nigeria by a Liberian diplomat, Patrick Sawyer, some of the people in the area opted not to have anything to do with her.

One of the residents who pleaded anonymity said, “We see her in this neighbourhood every day. She always looked sick but people stopped selling to her after the Ebola outbreak. It could be because she was Liberian and looked sickly. This might have frustrated her.”

Another resident who spoke to our correspondent after his request for anonymity was granted said, “She attended a church in the area and her church members still saw her yesterday. I used to see her every day in the dress she died in. She was sick and people in this area had avoided her, especially after the Ebola outbreak.”

The PUNCH gathered from some landlords, who are members of the Isheri Oke Community Development Association, that the incident had been reported to the Isheri Police Division.

Efforts to reach the Baale (head) of the area, Chief Albert Bankole, for comments proved abortive as he declined to speak to The PUNCH on the issue.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, could not be reached for comments.

Meanwhile, when our correspondent left the area around 11am, the woman’s body was still hanging on the pear tree.
