The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has described the 14-day ultimatum by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as subtle blackmail to stampede the Tripartite Committee on the new National Minimum Wage. He stated this at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja, noting that the ultimatum was uncalled for. This comes after organised labour accused the Federal Government of stalling the negotiation by failing to mention a figure as a new minimum wage for the Nigerian workers. The organised labour also issued the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum, insisting that the Tripartite Committee on the new National Minimum Wage concluded its work within the stipulated time frame. According to Ngige, it is not true that the Federal Government is trying to stall negotiations. “The following facts speak in that direction, if the Federal Government is not interested why did Mr President inaugurate the Presidential Committee on the new National Minimum Wage. If it is not interested, Mr President would have asked me to do an inter-ministerial meeting, but Mr President took interest and set up a presidential committee. This Presidential Committee, he monitors it and I also brief him from time to time, both written and verbally. As a matter of fact, before the meeting adjourned last week, I have told the committee that the Economic Management Team could not hold. This is due to the fact that most people in the team travelled with Mr President to China. Also if the Federal Government is not interested, why will l brief the entire tripartite committee and tell them that work is in progress, “he said. The minister also noted that he had requested for two weeks from the committee to enable the Federal Government delegation consult with state government delegation. That means that the meeting can be called at any time, in one day or within three days which is still stipulated within the month of September. So it is very surprising to know that labour gave ultimatum of 14 days to the Federal Government, this is uncalled for and a subtle blackmail to the Federal Government”. He also said that the chairperson of Tripartite Committee on the new National Minimum Wage would lead a delegation on Friday to brief Mr President on the negotiations so far. Ngige further assured Nigerians workers that there was no cause for alarm, adding that Federal Government was working assiduously to ensure the implementation of the minimum wage, soonest. https://newsdey.com/2018/09/chris-ngige-says-nlc-blackmailing-federal-government-with-ultimatum/ Read more political news on www.newsdey.com

In a statement issued by the Convener, Mr Olumide Akinrinlola, in Okitipupa on Sunday, the group advised its members not to be deceived by promises at a meeting scheduled by the state governor to address the situation. Some youths in Okitipupa, Ondo State, under the aegis of Bring Back Our Light, say the people of their area may not participate in the 2019 general elections if electricity supply was not restored in their communities. In a statement issued by the Convener, Mr Olumide Akinrinlola, in Okitipupa on Sunday, the group advised its members not to be deceived by promises at a meeting scheduled by the state governor to address the situation. Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu scheduled a town hall meeting on the 10-year-old blackout in the southern part of the state on Tuesday in Okitipupa and Igbokoda , The group described the meeting as “another political deception” coming ahead of the upcoming elections. The group threatened that the people of Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje and Ese-Odo local government areas, mostly affected by the blackout, would boycott the elections, unless electricity was restored to their communities. “We urge our members to attend the proposed meeting but they should be careful not to be gullible to political gimmicks, especially now that elections are around the corner. “We remain resolute that the four councils mostly affected by the blackout shall not participate in the 2019 elections, if our light is not restored by the state government,” i t stated. The group said it was sceptical about the intention of the Akeredolu-led administration of organising the town hall meeting few months to the 2019 polls. It wondered why the administration, which promised to restore electricity to the area within three months of assuming office could not do so two years after its inauguration. It urged the state government to align itself with the resolve by the Edo State Government not to renew the contract with Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) which would be due in one month. It noted that in spite of the presence of Omotosho and Niger-Delta Power Plants in its domain, BEDC could not provide the area with electricity. “Our planned peaceful mega protest at the Omotosho Power Plant will hold as planned in order to register our grievances and expose atrocities committed by BEDC for their licence to be terminated,” the group added. Powerful Serena Williams Reaches US Open Final Read details https://powerful-serena-williams-reaches-us-open-final/ |
Naomi Osaka told US Open title opponent Serena Williams “I love you” just moments after she became the first Japanese woman to reach a Grand Slam final. The 20-year-old breakout star of the tournament swept into the record books and Saturday’s championship match against the 23-time major winner with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Madison Keys, the runner-up in 2017. When asked on court what she told herself as she served for the match, she said: “Don’t double fault”. “Why,” asked the interviewer. “Serena,” replied the charismatic Osaka. “I love you, Serena,” she added before adding “I love you, mom; I love everybody”. Osaka, the 20th seed, has met and defeated Williams once — at Miami in March. That win came just a week after she had lifted her first top-level trophy at the prestigious Indian Wells event in California. Saturday will be the fulfilment of Osaka’s childhood dream of facing Williams in a Grand Slam final. “It still feels a little bit, like, surreal. Even when I was a little kid, I always dreamed that I would play Serena in a final of a Grand Slam,” she said. “Just the fact that it’s happening, I’m very happy about it. At the same time I feel like even though I should enjoy this moment, I should still think of it as another match. “Yeah, I shouldn’t really think of her as, like, my idol. I should just try to play her as an opponent.” The contrast on Saturday cannot be greater. Serena will be playing in her 31st Grand Slam final and ninth at the US Open where she is a six-time champion. When the American, 16 years her senior, won her first US Open in 1999, Osaka was not yet two years old. Whatever happens in the final, Osaka said she will remain a fan of the American who is chasing a record-equalling 24th major, just a year after giving birth and undergoing four post-natal surgeries. “When you just come back and then you make the finals of two slams, I think that’s really amazing,” added Osaka in reference to Williams’s runner-up spot at Wimbledon in July. “I’m sure that everyone knows that Serena’s really good, of course. But I don’t want to overthink this match, so I’m not going to think that she’s so much better than she was in Miami. “I’m just going to go out there and play. Since I already know she’s a good player, I don’t want to be surprised if she plays better or not.” Keys had beaten Osaka three times out of three before Thursday’s semi-final but the 14th seed admitted she had been completely overpowered in the semi-final. “I thought I could get a break but every time she would hit an ace or a big shot,” said the 23-year-old who carved out 13 break points which were all saved by the Japanese star. “It was difficult. You think she’s going to let up but she didn’t. She was very impressive.” AFP https://newsdey.com/i-love-you-osaka-tells-us-open-final-opponent-serena/

APC is not corrupt abi |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold President Muhammadu Buhari responsible for “violating” provisions of the electoral act. This PDP said yesterday while reacting to the presidential nomination form which a group known as the Nigeria Consolidation Ambassador Network (NCAN) bought for Buhari. Recall On Wednesday, it was reported that the group paid a sum of N45 million through a cheque delivered to Adams Oshiomhole, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the purchase of the nomination form of Buhari. Sanusi Musa , coordinator of the group, explained that the decision to buy the form was informed by the need to consolidate on the foundation for a better Nigeria. The gesture is said to contradict section 91 (9) of the electoral act which states: “No individual or other entity shall donate more than one million naira to any candidate.” Kola Ologbodiyan , PDP spokesman, through a statement, said that Buhari has been indicted by his decision to accept the group’s action. The party added that Nigerians are aware of the president’s “ gimmick” in purchasing the form, despite the “affluence ” his family lives in. “Nigerians are aware that the very expensive personal effects, including posh jewelries daily paraded by his close relatives betrayed the gimmick of using an unregistered group, pieced together to execute another failed pro-poor stunt to sway Nigerians,” the statement read. “ Already, our people are daily confronted by the flaunting of affluence and material wealth by the President and those around him, while betraying and abandoning millions of poor Nigerians who, unfortunately, put their trust in him in 2015. “Since President Buhari has not publicly disowned the purchase of the form by the group, the PDP charges INEC to, within the next 24 hours, hold him culpable and make him to face the appropriate sanctions for the violation of electoral laws.” https://newsdey.com/2019-pdp-says-inec-should-sanction-buhari-see-why/

People’s rights activist and an All Progressives Congress Presidential aspirant, Christmas Akpodiete, has dragged the ruling All Progressives Congress before the Federal High Court over the high cost of nomination fees charged by the political parties. Among those who he also dragged to court was the Attorney General of the Federation, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the People’s Democratic Party, and order registered political parties The Federal High Court which is situated in Abuja marked his case with Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/951/2018. Akpodiete has adjured the court to restrain the APC and the PDP from going ahead with the scheduled primaries, adding that if flouted, it should be declared null and void. Akpodiete describes the nomination forms by the party to be ridiculous and unaffordable, adding that, it was as well unconstitutional. “The nomination fees are repugnant to the rules of natural justice, equity and good conscience.” “It’s an attempt by the Nigerian political oligarchs to make nonsense of the just passed Not-too-Young-to- Run law, and it is a calculated move to deprive the Nigerian people their constitutionally guaranteed right to run for public offices in their own country,” Akpodiete said. Akpodiete is asking the court to give a judicial breath to this matter by pegging the nomination fees for all elective positions at N18, 000 because according to him, that is the minimum wage. https://newsdey.com/presidential-aspirant-takes-apc-pdp-inec-to-court-over-nomination-form-cost/
