The wife of US President Donald Trump, Melania, on Tuesday arrived in Ghana on the first leg of her maiden, solo tour of Africa that has been billed as a chance to carve her own diplomatic path. The US first lady stepped off an overnight flight from Andrews Airforce Base near Washington and onto a red carpet at Accra’s Kotoka International Airport. She was met by her Ghanaian counterpart Rebecca Akufo-Addo and a group of local schoolchildren in yellow and brown uniforms waving the US stars and stripes and the Ghanaian flag. It was learned that the former model was smiling and looked relaxed as she was entertained by a troupe of traditional drummers and dancers. The first lady’s office has said the tour will be a “diplomatic and humanitarian visit” that will focus on her #BeBest campaign for “children and their well-being”. It will also “showcase” the work of the US Agency for International Development, even at a time when her husband’s government is looking to slash US aid across the world. In addition to Ghana, she is due to visit Malawi, Kenya and Egypt before returning to Washington early on October 7. https://newsdey.com/2018/10/melania-trump-arrives-in-ghana-to-visit-other-countries/

President Muhammadu Buhari has spoken up against the latest violence in Jos which led to the lost of lives and the imposition of a curfew in the Plateau state capital. The President stated that his administration has continued to make efforts to ensure that violence in the state and other affected states become the thing of the past. “I am deeply worried about the seeming indifference to the sanctity of life by criminals whose hearts are hardened by evil,” Buhari said. “I know it is not an easy thing. It is a very difficult thing. But the resultant peace achieved by the people of Plateau state should not be squandered. Every citizen deserves stability and development. Peace has no alternative. “It is my appeal to all the communities in the state capital, and the entire state as a whole to embrace peace. Where there are differences, dialogue should be used to bring about understanding. There is also the due process of the law. Differences cannot be resolved by abuses or by bullets.” President Buhari decried the activities of evil politicians who are specialist in initiating ethnic and religious prejudices for cheap popularity, despite the knowledge that such incitement could play into the hands of hate mongers. He assured that his administration would continue to engage with stakeholders to address the root causes of this repeated violence in Plateau State and other parts of the country. He however warned that no responsible government would allow anarchy to replace law and order. https://newsdey.com/2018/10/buhari-speaks-against-latest-jos-violence/

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC has for the second time postponed its primaries. The party postponed its presidential primary election to Friday, September 28, making it the second time in 24 hours the party has had to reschedule. On Sunday, September 23, 2018, the party announced that the primary, earlier scheduled for September 25 would hold on September 27. However, barely 24 hours after, the party’s national spokesperson, Yekini Nabena, announced a new date. Nebena, via his Twitter handle, @ynabena, said the party election was again rescheduled because of the Osun State rerun election slated for September 27. He wrote: “In view of the Osun State Governorship rerun election which has been scheduled for Thursday, September 27th, 2018, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) has now rescheduled the presidential primary election to Friday, September 28th, 2018. “This is to avoid a clash in dates with the Osun State Governorship rerun election and enable all registered Party members in all thirty-six states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) participate in the exercise.” https://newsdey.com/2018/09/just-concern-apc-postpones-presidential-primaries-reasons/
