Health / Re: Female Genital Mutilation: What You Need To Know As A Nigerian by Memejem: 2:04am On Jul 27, 2016
I have male friends and patients who have decided to get circumcised well above the age of 20 years. Their personal decision.

Many people I know who are not religious that decided to circumcise their male children. So I have no idea where you get your opinions that you state as fact here. You are reasoning based on emotion. I have experience and evidence on my side.

There are thousands of women from many countries who had had FMG that speak out against it. The fact is that it is proven that there are more cases of FGM that have gone wrong than male circumcision. It is fact. Either do your research or stop quoting me. Where are the male groups who are speaking out against male circumcision as a crime against humanity? Point them out to me if they exist.

I already stated that I don't plan on circumcising any of my children so I don't know where you got the opinion that I support circumcision. I'm not guilty of anything. FGM is NOT the equivalent of male circumcision and for the majority not done for the same reasons in Africa.

The argument of hygiene for male circumcision although mostly invalid in these modern times now was a major factor as to why many people who were not religious got their male children circumcised historically in the western world.

Information is free. Google it and read from reputable sites. Or visit your local library. You reason based on emotion. You have little to no experience on the matter and you're trying to prove a point unsuccessfully.

Let's just agree to disagree. It's obvious that we don't see eye to eye on this matter and both our opinions will not change anytime soon.

hoodboy:

This is about being rational, which you are not because your mind has been programmed to see it as bad. Like i had said earlier, same way you have bad cases of female circumcision is the same way you have bad cases of male circumcision. for every person you've seen haven issues after female circumcision, there are a thousand more who have gone about live a healthy life.

All I'm advocating for really is an end to the bias, and this senseless criminalising of female circumcision while male circumcision is tolerated in the same breathe, which you yourself are guilty of. did you see the pictures i uploaded earlier? there are a thousand more cases like that, and truth be told the only reason people circumcise their male children is because of religious injunction as against any argument of hygiene that is being put up.
Health / Re: Female Genital Mutilation: What You Need To Know As A Nigerian by Memejem: 11:21pm On Jul 26, 2016
I live in Canada and FGM is illegal here. So I haven't seen any botched FM cases here. But I've seen difficult deliveries from women who have had the procedure don't elsewhere. I've seen cases of women and children being unable to urinate properly, having higher incidences of vaginal infections and difficulties with their menstrual period as a direct result of this procedure. But those problems aren't faced by their male counterparts because of their circumcision.

You just don't understand.

Anyways since you're not in the medical profession it makes it more evident to me that it is more difficult for you to grasp the severity of this issue and you're obviously not willing to do more research and educate yourself. You are more concerned about a perceived opinion of the western world when by all indications you don't live amongst them.

It's quite ridiculous on your part actually.

hoodboy:

No I'm not in the medical profession. Since you are there, please tell me how many cases of female genital cutting (botched) you have personally witnessed/attended to
Health / Re: Female Genital Mutilation: What You Need To Know As A Nigerian by Memejem: 11:17am On Jul 26, 2016
Are you in the medical profession? Yes or no?

And no. I'm not planning on cicumcising any of my children. If they get older and decide to do that to themselves that will be their decision.

hoodboy:

My dear I'm being objective, if the west hasn't so criminalized female genital cutting, it would not be receiving the backlash that it is. If they have been "tolerant" of this culture they'd rather sensitize and advocate for safer ways of doing it, e.g using sterilized equipment, perfecting different safe cutting procedures, if half the money spent promoting male circumcision by the west is spent on promoting female circumcision or rather sef if half the money spent criminalizing the procedure is spent understanding it and sensitizing cultures that practice it, the world will be a safer place.

Ps. Are you a mother, did you circumcise your son? If yes why put him through that kind of pain that is utterly unnecessary. This is the same argument against fgm basically yet under that same breathe y'all are mutilating male children mostly in the name of religion and not because of any hygiene excuse
Health / Re: Female Genital Mutilation: What You Need To Know As A Nigerian by Memejem: 3:48am On Jul 26, 2016
In the western modern world BOTH practices are frowned upon. If you were in the medical field you would understand that FMG and male circumcision are not similar surgical procedures although on paper it sounds the same.

It's obvious that you are speaking from a place of emotion rather than through factually based evidence or real experience

Where are the standards made by the medial profession for FGM as you claim. Please post it .An act that has been criminalized by many countries does not have regulations. Most countries that engage in this act are not doing it in hospitals with the supervision of licensed health professionals. But rather in dodgy unsanitary enviornments that do more harm than good.

Let's agree to disagree. This conversation is not a discourse but rather an emotional outburst on your part.

If you care to do the research you will find that there is a huge outcry from thousands of women who have had this procedure done, condemning it from different cultures and countries all over the world. The united nations have gotten involved and it's reached the judicial system of many countries. They are not all wrong. These movements and outcries are not based on a double staNdard.

Educate yourself on this issue from an objective standpoint. Put culture aside and critically think about it. This issue has nothing to do with the west vs Nigeria. Its not them vs us.

Also ask yourself how many men had gathered together across the globe to spread awareness about the negative effects of male circumcision Not many.because it is not the equivalent procedure done to males and not for the same purpose.

hoodboy:

so their religious injunctions super-cedes ours? I'm sure the west will be cool with it if it was a jewish practice.... same way it is done at infancy for men is the same way it's done at infancy too for some girls... All I'm saying is that enough of the double standard, if you condemn female circumcision, condemn male circumcision as well. Rather than criminalise it, you could work towards setting and improving the standards to reduce associated risk, which funny enough exists in the two practices

Do you work in the healthcare profession? Because I do. FGM And male circumcision do not have the same dangers and risks for adverse reactions. In males it is a skin flap that is removed though painful because there are nerve endings there. Previously done in the past for religious and hygienic purposes.

I live in north America and the majority of health professionals do not support male circumcision unless it is done for a religious purpose as is outlined in the Bible, Koran and Torah. There is no passage that supports FGM that I know of and is very harmful to the female.

It's not the same procedure for both genders like you think. And most men become circumcised as infanys, though in south Africa it's a rite of passage that traditionally occurs at the onset of puberty.

In regards to your stance on tradition, once an act no longer serves the people or positively advances them it must be done away with. Traditions and cultures is cultivated by people and can be done away with as well.

I believe it should be the choice of the individual of they want to be circumcised. They should wait until the child is of age to decide, more specific to males.

hoodboy:
The double standard is appalling, if it's good for boys, then it's also good for girls... Personally I detest the way Americans criminalise the culture of female circumcision and in the same breathe argue in support of male circumcision. Makes no sense at all,

same way female circumcision can be dangerous is the same way male circumcision is also dangerous. I wish I can post some pictures on this thread and maybe we will all get enlightened

I hope you know that the usage of MSG (monosodium glutamate) what you call white maggi is quite controversial. It has been linked to many adverse side effects and hypersensitivity among those who consume it often.

Here in Canada all foods that contain that ingredient must be properly labelled and all restaurants that use that ingredient must warn their customers. His very popular in Asian cuisine. Many Asian restaurants where I live have just opted to stop utilizing the ingreodnet because of the health alerts.

Just letting you know, please do some research into that ingredient before utilizing it again. Or perhaps limit your intake. Just a heads up.

Thank you so much for the fast response. I think this gate is quite beautiful. How would I be able to tell between the good quality gates as opposed to those with low quality steel? Seems like when I'm ready to build I'll have to be buying some stuff though you if you're willing. Because it seems like I'm a prime candidate to be cheated from ooo.

spyder880:

I bought this gate for N130k along Mbaise road, Egbu Owerri. It will be about same cost everywhere in the east, but be careful as there are so many lower quality steel being used and the gates so made are of lower quality than this, cheaper too.

How much was this gate? Was it bought in the owerri environment? Wil the price be similar in enugu/anambra?

We have mounted this huge gate at the entrance of this compound. Plastering works might start anytime soon.

Anambra land is quite expensive these days. Even in villlages. I pray this your estate comes to fruition soon. I'm very interested. Also considering that your new estate around Nike resorts, but you haven't really updated that thread recently. I'll keep my eye out though. I'm sure something is in the works.

Don't forget anambra state oooo

spyder880:

My Work in the last week has been to complete all outstanding projects in building construction. I am reluctant to take up any new projects this year because I am in the process of moving my company a little out of construction in the short time, so I can focus more on the acquisition of land in the four states we have interest in.

You will agree with me that conducting "due diligence" is the most important aspect of land acquisition and in that regard, a lot of time will be spent in the investigation of the various properties for authenticity. I am my lawyers are checking out some lands now, and more will be looked into in the coming months.

Please be patient as we realign and focus on more estates. Thank you.

Baba, I'm not old ooo. But me, I no wan die.

I think it's important to share knowledge. But If nobody wants to hear. It's ok. When I build my own, I'll use the material I feel is best. That I know won't reduce my life expectancy.

But in regards to commercial buildings I'm sure there are laws in place where carcinogenic materials shouldn't be used.

Take for example a hotel is built where asbestos is used as ceiling material for the kitchen and other areas.the chef and kitchen staff will be constantly applying pressure to the ceiling with steam and heat from the foods being cooked. The ceiling will corrode faster, they will be breathing microscopic particles falling from there every day. Some workers will be presenting with cough. They will assume it's a cold, or a result of some of the food stuffs they work with. One day the chef will die. Nobody will know or ask why. They just say "he's been sick for a long time. He always had a bad cough".

Do what you want in your own house. But commercial properties are a whole other game. If I go to Nigeria and enter a mall, hotel, restaurant that has asbestos that I can easily identify. I'm leaving.

I understand what you're saying, but even the viewpoint you stated above is rooted in ignorance. The stubbornness is because they truly don't understand the message. It hasn't sunk in, that person can't see pass the money he thinks he's saving.

But once sickness sets in, the amount of money he'll be spending on medical care, medications, surgery. He could have spent a couple thousands more and saved his life.

Though I agree, its hard to educate stubborn people.

It's not always about proper education, Nigerians are very stubborn when it comes to things like that. You'll start hearing something like " jams no get power for Africa man body" or " is is not the same ceiling papa Chinaedu has being using since... ...and all his family are still alive" .

I'm not sure for everyone, but i feel like if everyone in nigeria was properly educated about the harms of asbestos they would choose to use alternative materials in thier build.

Nobody wants to die before thier time.if an alternative such as pvc is available for similar or cheaper cost they would utilize the alternative.

The majority of people who utilize carcinogenic or harmful material is due to ignorance. Nobody willingly utilizes things known to cause harm. Unless they are suicidal.

When someone gets cancer in a Nigerian hospital have you heard of them trying to trace how said person got the cancer? Or do they try to treat it?

Anyways I've said what I've wanted to say. If people have knowledge and choose to do otherwise they only have themselves to blame should something happen in the future.

Asbestos is proven to be carcinogenic. Which means is increases the risk of one getting cancer and in large enough amounts one will most likely fall ill. It's not immediate death. All those old people that fall sick and dies and nobody knows why. People start getting cough They'll start calling it spiritual attack but never took them to hospital. Theyll just say "they were sick for a long time" it mutates DNA and that's how cancer is born.

Also roofing materials if not damaged may not release enough material for one to breath in all the damaging materials. But over time it will corrode.

Asbestos is a known and proven carcinogenic all over the world. There are many reports and investigations carried out all across the globe. Banned in many countries. But nigeria doesn't seem to have control over products that are imported into the country.

A word is enough for the wise. If you carry out your own independent research you will see the results. Just because generations before us were ignorant and didn't know the implications of what they did doesn't not mean we that are enlightened should repeat the same.

But if you want to you are free to use Asbestos if in fact it's not banned in nigeria. But i just thought I'd share.

FreeWorld23:
sorry to dig up this.

I have been reading same health risk about asbestos online here but in reality, 50% (if i am not wrong) of nigerians still use it especially in low/middle class area. I expect those living there to be dead by now cos i was also raised in a home with asbestos.

I could remember how many new houses i can count with asbestos roofing when i went to roof a building in badagry last year.

If there is health risk using it, why cant govt ban it once and for all cos i am taking that health risk as a shyt talk.

Oh ok. Thanks for clarifying. I understand what you're trying to say now.

For residential single family homes I think the ground floor parking is a great idea for the lekki environs. It will aid to solve a lot of thier water issues if implemented appropriately.

But as for me, I'm not a rich person. I still cannot afford to implement such in a land that shares the characteristics of lekki and Co. And if I ever happened to get land there I wouldn't waste my time building a structure that wouldn't stand the test of time.

I know that at least for now I will build on dry land because dangote isn't sharing his tomato paste and cement money with me oooo

EgunMogaji:

I just like the ground floor parking idea. I personally don't care for multi-story structures as they take away from the environment.

Okay, I see the issue now. When I said underground I didn't mean subterranean. I meant the first visible floor that is parallel to the surface could be the used for parking.
Properties / Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Memejem: 11:47pm On Jun 26, 2016
I believe he stated the plan included underground parking not ground floor parking.
If in fact the plan is to build underground parking I think the decision not to build in the lekki/ajah environment is a very wise one.

There is a lot of risk involved and if it is the first time endeavouring into this kind of project I beleive one would like the odds to be in their favour. Even if not the first time doing such a project. Building underground parking in a waterlogged area, though not impossible would not be cheap. And sometimes the amount of money that would be spent in such is not cost-effective at all.

But also from a business standpoint? Is it necessary? As it's most likely going to be a rental property. Why spend so much to build underground in lekki? How will you recover the cost and how long will it take? There is only so much you can charge people in yearly rent before they decide to choose another property that fits thier budget.

Though it would be interesting to see someone showcase the journey of building an underground parking area in waterlogged area. I would love to see the process. But in this case. I totally understand freeworld23 perspective.

EgunMogaji:

Apologies, but I meant the ground floor garage design speficically.

You're right that almost anything can be built to stand the test of time in a waterlogged area when properly designed.

BUT the multistory building he proposed seems like a capital intensive project. Why would an investor in Nigeria choose to build in a water infested area when he can build the same property in an area relatively easier to build in?? Just speaking from a business perspective.

And even if they chose to build that building in lekki area and had unlimited funds, the main issue I foresee is "maintainence". Even if you spend a lot of money securing the land, building great drainage and adequate foundation, if your nearby neighbours do none of these things your property is still at risk of being flooded. Especially if the government has not created/maintaining adequate drainage for the surrounding environment.

Since we know how things are on ground in nigeria, if I were to be an investor. I would also choose to build such a large scale building in an area that would not bring me "stories that touch" if I can avoid it. Save the money I would use in tackling water/flood issues and utilize it elsewhere on my build.

EgunMogaji:

Anything can stand in a waterlogged area when properly designed. There are bridges with piers sunk in open oceans.

The idea is instead of the ground floor apartments turning into a swimming pool, why not yield that floor to the ocean surge/flood from the onset.

This is just a layman's opinion on what I've seen.

Jessam:

Ok sometimes we don't understand what the term raft foundation exactly means. The term raft is related to the term raft boat. google raft boat. A raft foundation just like a boat needs to be water tight , if not the boat will capsize because of the water that gets in causing it to be unstable or over weight, water is heavy (hence why blocks are not used because the cement/mortar used to bond the blocks together will fail over time and lead to water entering the boat/foundation) another important requirement is that a raft/boat also needs to be stable , imagine if you have 10 fat people in front of the boat and two skinny people at the back of the boat what happens? the boat tips if you are lucky to the front, but mostly likely will capsize. Now the importance of the gutter is this, The more soaked the soil is the less its weight carrying ability,so if the water from the roof hits the area exposed to this deluge of water, the part of the raft foundation close (underneath and by the side)to this water soaked soil is now perched on soil that has less weight carrying capabilities, so guess what happens ? the raft becomes unstable like the boat with the fat and skinny people on board mentioned earlier on. This area of the foundation starts sinking but not the whole slab, it then means that parts of the walls are being pulled meaning they will start cracking, serious fractures will occur in the wall system holding up the house, the house could then collapse/capsize like the boat.

I'm not saying everyone should include rain gutters in thier homes. But when i build, I will include it in mine. Better safe than sorry. The evidence available is convincing enough for me. Plus I don't think the cost will be so much.

Substandard materials used. All the quotes you give here of just foundation alone for the lagos area is very very high. Not to talk of how on all your builds you add drains up and down to keep water away and fresh paint that hasn't been seen by anyone but you.

The profit margin of an uncompleted house that was built with not up to 10 million to sell for 55million is unheard of.

It is rubbish. Rubbish. That house will collapse. I feel sorry for the buyer.

Because next thing you'll start describing all the first-class materials you utilized and all the amenities the house has. There is no way 10 million will cover that. How it has features no other house in the whole of lagos that you built has.
