Politics / Nigeria Customs Distributes Rice Worth N3.79bn To Idps by metroblogger: 8:40pm On Jan 07, 2018
The Nigeria Customs Service has distributed 252,666 (50kg) bags of rice worth N3.79 bn in the last 22 months to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast and Benin.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Joseph Attah, made the disclosure in Abuja on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Attah said that the exercise was in compliance with the Presidential directive given in January, 2016, to the Service to donate all seized perishable items to Nigerians affected by the insurgency in the Northeast.

According to him, in February 2016, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), retired Col. Hameed Ali, inaugurated a National Logistics Committee (NLC) with members drawn from Customs, Nigerian Army and Nigeria Air Force.

He said the committee also had members from Nigeria Police, FRSC, NSCDC, NAFDAC, NTA, NAN, NUJ and Red Cross.

He said that the committee was mandated to transfer all seized rice and other relief items to IDPs in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Edo States.

Attah said that to ensure security and transparency in the process, the items were transported from the various government warehouses by the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport to various states in the Northeast and Edo.

He said, ‘‘252, 666 (50kg) bags of rice worth N3.79 billion were distributed to the IDPs in the Northeast and Benin in the last 22 months.

‘‘Likewise, 82,140 25 litres of jerry cans worth over N985 million, 19,491 cartoons of soap worth N52,625,700 and other items such as bales of used clothes, cartoons of spaghetti,25 litres jerry cans of palm oil, cartoons of slippers, bags of footwear, dozens of children shirts were also distributed.

“Dozens of female wears, dozens of female hijab, cartoons of mosquito coil, sacks of school bags, branded wrapper, bales of praying mats.

“Rolls of textile, cartons of sugar among others in their thousands were also distributed to the IDPs.

‘‘Despite the tonnes of rice and other relief items already transferred to the IDPs , NCS warehouses across the country are still filled with rice.

‘‘This only shows that the sustained onslaught against unrepentant rice smugglers has continued to yield positive results,” Attah said.

He said that the items in the warehouses were either awaiting court forfeiture to the Federal Government or has already been allocated to government of the affected state who pays the Army Corps of Transport and Logistics for transportation to the IDPs.

‘‘Eventually, the seized rice and other perishable items presently in the warehouses will be given to fellow Nigerians affected by the unfortunate insurgency in the Northeast.”

On e-auction, Attah said that so far 646 numbers of vehicles had been won with over N272 million generated as revenue for the Federal Government.

He said that since the commencement of the e-auction process, 5,454 persons had registered while 4,865 actually nodded and 646 emerged winners.

“The introduction of the e-auction process was based on the need to eliminate abuses associated with manual process of the past.

‘‘This is to ensure maximum revenue from the process while still providing equal opportunities to all interested Nigerians to log on to the e-auction portal and bid for any items they wish,” Attah said.

He said that the NCS would continue to be careful in handling goods at its warehouses so as not to avoid needless litigations by claimants as a result of illegal disposal.

Attah recalled that the Customs’ CGC launched the e-auction platform https: app.trade.gov.ng/e-auction on July 3, 2017.

Politics / Nigerians Won’t Go Into New Year With Petrol Scarcity – NNPC by metroblogger: 9:54am On Dec 30, 2017
The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, has vowed that Nigerians will not go into 2018 with the scarcity of petroleum products.

Baru, who disclosed this to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday, reiterated NNPC’s position to ensure the pump price of fuel was maintained at the current official price of N145 per litre.

According to him, any marketer found hoarding fuel or selling above the official price will be punished.

“I’m happy to report that we have tamed the monster that reared it’s head as a result of the rumoured price increase about three weeks ago.

“Fortunately that rumour instigated a lot of marketers to be very greedy and they decided that their fellow citizens should not enjoy the Christmas holiday and New Year with ease and decided to profiteer starting by hoarding and diversion of products.

“At the beginning I did address the press, telling the world that we have sufficient products that will last us 30 days through the New Year into January but because the marketers wanted to inflict harm and pains on fellow citizens, they decided to hoard products, divert them and in some cases even smuggled products out of the country.

“This has been tamed by the actions we took and I personally led the war around Abuja and other teams led the war in Lagos and other parts of the country,’’ he said.

The GMD, according to NAN, noted that already the queues in the filling stations in Abuja had started disappearing, saying that normalcy would soon be restored in the distribution of the product.

He said: “As of this morning, I have gone round the Abuja metropolis and I have seen that the queues have reduced significantly to almost normal level and few motorists that I heard speaking on morning programmed concerning what I have seen said they have not spent up to 30 minutes to fuel their cars.

“So the monster has been tamed in Lagos, the situation has been brought into normalcy as far as two days ago and we are also aching the same thing in all other cities.

“I promise that we have sufficient products that will last us for the next 30 days and we keep bringing in 50 per cent over and above our normal consumption into the country.

“And vessels have been lined up, at the moment I have eight vessels discharging products at various ports around the country.

“So Nigerians should enjoy the New Year and that Mr. President’s directive and guidance which has been very helpful has been executed and normalcy has returned.’’

He advised those marketers that had hidden the products in odd locations to better bring them out and sell to the public at N145 per litre, saying “if NNPC sold it to you at N133.28, you have sufficient margin within that ambit to be able to supply and sell to the public at maximum N145 per litre.’’

According to him, the NNPC filling stations are selling the product at N143 per litre.

He warned that any marketer caught selling above the official price of N145 per litre would be sanctioned appropriately by the regulator, DPR and PPPRA with the support of law enforcement agencies.

He said the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), would make sure that the products were confiscated and given free to the public.

“This is the directive that we are working on by Mr. President and is being executed to the later. Bring them out and sell these products, we don’t have any shortage and we are making massive loadings.

“Normally we should be able to have 850 trucks to satisfy the National consumption but as at yesterday (Dec. 28) we loaded 1,750 trucks to go around the country.

“So we will continue massive load out until we reach the former position whereby all the stations will have products and truck siding,’’ he added.

Crime / Yusuf Sule Saulawa Jailed For 7 Years For N2.5m Fraud (Photo) by metroblogger: 5:48pm On Dec 29, 2017
A former permanent secretary in the administration of former governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shehu Shema, Yusuf Sule Saulawa was today December 29, 2017 convicted by Justice Sanusi Tukur of the Katsina State High Court of one count of Obtaining by False Pretense.

The convict fraudulently obtained the sum of N2.5 million from the complainant while he was a permanent secretary attached to the office of the Deputy Governor of Katsina State on the pretext that the office would award the complainant a contract for the supply of fertilizer to all the Local Government areas in Katsina State. Saulawa claimed that the money was for the purchase of bidding documents. It was further alleged that after obtaining the money, the convict cut all contacts with the complainant.

In the course of prosecution, EFCC counsel Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad called 3 witnesses and tendered many exhibits.

After both parties closed their case on the 3rd of October, 2017, final written addresses were adopted and the case was subsequently adjourned to December 29 for judgement.

In his judgement, Justice Tukur said he was convinced that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and pronounced the accused guilty as charged.

Saulawa was accordingly convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment without option of fine.

Politics / Fuel Scarcity: Motorists Get Free Petrol In Ogun by metroblogger: 9:05am On Dec 29, 2017
The Department of Petroleum Resources, Abeokuta Field Office, on Thursday dispensed petrol for free to motorists again in Abeokuta.

The filling station, Daslap Petrol Station, Olomore, was allegedly caught selling above the official pump price.

The team, led by its Head of Operations, Mr Kasali Akinade, said the action was necessary to make others comply with the law.

“We got a tip-off that this station, Daslap, had fuel but they were selling above the pump price at N200 per litre.

“On getting here, we also had evidences to support the claim.

“When we checked their fuel stock level, we discovered they had 33,000 litres. In order to serve as a deterrent to others, we decided to ask them to give their fuel for free.

We said they should give fuel to 20 motorists and 30 bikes for free,” he said.

He noted that most of the marketers sold at night and “ungodly hours, when they know that officials cannot visit their station”.

Akinade, however, accused some security agents of sharp practices, thereby making the DPR’s work more difficult.

“Most of the law enforcement agents are not really helping matters. Some of them collect Jerry cans, some of them bring in vehicles from the exit points while we are trying to arrange and create sanity within the filling stations,” he said.

Assessing the situation in the state, Akinade described it as ‘artificial’, noting that most of the stations had petrol, but were either hoarding or selling above pump price.

Politics / NNPC Boss, Baru Dispenses Petrol In Abuja (Photos) by metroblogger: 6:10pm On Dec 27, 2017
The combined team of officials of the Nigerian National PetroleumCorporation (NNPC) and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), led by the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, on Tuesday heightened the tempo of unscheduled visits to fuel stations across the Federal Capital Territory suspected to be involved in underhand dealings.

The raid which was facilitated by the operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) led to the clampdown of a notorious fuel outlet in the Kubwa District of the FCT caught selling petrol at the rate of N250 per litre, a price well above the approved retail price of N145/litre.

The NNPC GMD promptly ordered an on-the-spot dispensing of the remaining product in the storage tank free to motorists in conformity with extant sanction for such misdemeanour.

Addressing journalists after the exercise, Dr. Baru noted that in line with its mandate as supplier of last resort, the NNPC would continue to work with relevant stakeholders like the DPR and Civil Defence Corps to bring to a quick end the prevailing hardship in accessing petrol across the country.

The GMD enthused that with the recent directive by the Presidency for the security agencies to tighten the noose on smuggling of petroleum products, the issues of cross-border activities and diversion of products would be curtailed, thus allowing Nigerians to benefit from the massive injection of fuel into the system being undertaken by the corporation within the last few weeks.

In a related development, the NNPC has announced the temporary suspension of products dispensing activities at its mega station along Lagos Road, in Port Harcourt due to a fire incident which occurred near the station.

The fire resulted from a Toyota Camry car which exploded outside the station after product was dispensed into an extra in-built locally fabricated tank designed to siphoned fuel.

Though the fire did not affect the station, the corporation noted that it was imperative to suspend operations to enable security agencies clear the resultant traffic situation at the scene.

Crime / Policeman Shoots Colleague To Death In Bayelsa On Xmas Day by metroblogger: 3:55pm On Dec 27, 2017
It was a “Black Christmas” in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital following the inadvertent killing of a police officer by a fellow policeman during a gun duel between the police and suspected cultists.

An eyewitness who preferred anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Christmas day at Obele Area of Ovom in Yenagoa, leaving residents in apprehension.

According to the eyewitness, trouble started when a misunderstanding among the feasting cultists degenerated to a fight, resulting to gunshots which eventually attracted a police patrol team to the area.

The Police Command Spokesman, DSP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said the killing was shocking.

“Yes, the incident was between cultists but as the police went to find out what was going on, the cultists started shooting and one of the policemen mistakenly shot an officer.

“Though, we are yet to get the full details because some of our men, who were at the scene, are supposed to brief us over the matter.

“Nevertheless, the Police are intensifying efforts to ensure a crime-free environment for people in Bayelsa this period of Christmas celebration; we deployed over 4,000 personnel for patrol.

“We adopted some strategies like ‘Cordon and Search’; I must tell you, our men and women are fully on operations to safeguard lives and property,” Butswat said.

The spokesman urged the residents to continue with their lawful endeavours and support the police by providing timely and credible information on criminal activities.

“I also urge them to continue to enjoy the Christmas celebration and steer clear of every criminal activity,” he said.

NAN recalls that an armed robbery suspect had also on Dec. 22, killed his fellow robber at a robbery operation around Azikoro village, Yenagoa and eventually turned himself in at Azikoro Police Station.

Politics / I Will Never Please My Children At Detriment Of Nigerians- Buhari by metroblogger: 11:58am On Dec 25, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated that he will never betray the trust reposed in him by Nigerian masses to please his children or relations.
He made the disclosure in a 55-minue documentary titled: “Buhari: Beyond the Iron and Steel”, aired by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), on Sunday.

According to President Buhari, he remains in politics today because of the goodwill he enjoys from the masses.

The documentary features Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, some ministers and ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) governors and chieftains speaking about the positive attributes of the president.
In a remark to close the documentary, Buhari said: “I pray five times a day thanking God that allowed people to understand and believe me.

“This goodwill that I enjoy from the masses is what is keeping me in politics and of course, my central objective is to provide transparency and accountable government.”

A post by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on his Facebook account earlier on Sunday, had given an insight on the contributions of the speakers, including Osinbajo.
The Vice President said: “He gives you things to do, and leaves you strictly to do those things. No interference at all, once he has confidence in you….And he cracks those jokes, and manages to still keep a straight face.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Matters, Abike Dabiri-Erewa said: “How I wish Nigerians know his softer and accommodating side. Very jocular. But it is our duty to tell them.”
Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in his remarks, admitted that he and some other people he did not name could no longer roll on the floor of President Buhari’s living room like they used to when they were in opposition.

“When we were in the opposition, you needed to see how we rolled on the floor in his (Buhari’s) living room, as we laughed. Of course, we can’t do that again now,” he stated.
The documentary was put together by the Media and Publicity department of the State House, Abuja.

Politics / Public Officers Should Undergo Drug Test–emir Sanusi by metroblogger: 11:57am On Dec 19, 2017
The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for a law that will compel public officers and traditional rulers to undergo drug test in the country.

He made the call at the Senate Roundtable on drug abuse held in Kano on Monday.

The event is organised by the Senate in order to address drug abuse epidemic in the country.

He said the call was necessary in order to ensure that anybody was not allowed to hold political office and traditional leadership positions.

“I am ready to submit myself for the drug test.

“I suggest that ministers, governors and traditional rulers should go for drug test because when youths understand that they cannot be governors, ministers or senators if they are drug addicts, they will be into their senses.

“The country is facing a great danger because the fight against drug abuse has to be taken seriously if we are to succeed,’’ he said.

While calling for effective implementation of the laws against drug abuse in the country, the first class traditional ruler also urged the Senate to ensure proper funding of all agencies charged with the responsibility to enforce the laws.

“We are deceiving ourselves if we don’t believe that we are part of the problem,’’ Sanusi said.
Besides, the emir called for the establishment of modern rehabilitation centres for victims of drug abuse in the six geo-political zones of the country.

He said when established, the centres should be equipped with necessary facilities and personnel to enable them take care of the teeming numbers of victims of the drug abuse.

He said the measure was necessary in order to ensure that those addicts were rehabilitated and trained in various skills to enable them be reintegrated into the society.

He, however, called for adequate funding of the centres to enable them operate effectively and serve the purpose for which they are established.
