he National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Monday said it would shut down radio and television stations owing the commission licensing fees.

The Director General, Is’haq Modibbo Kawu said that any broadcasting station that failed to come up with a payment plan before September 15 would be shut down. .

Modibbo said this at a news briefing in Lagos after a meeting with the stakeholders in the broadcasting industry.p, according to the News Agency of Nigetia, NAN.

He said that the broadcasting stations are owing the commission N4. 3 billion .

According to him, there was an agreement between the stakeholders and the NBC in February 2017 on how to recover the debt. He said the stations had reneged on the agreement.

He said that it would not be ideal to mention the broadcasting stations due to the relationship between the parties and that the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) and NBC would be meeting.

”There will be a consultative meeting between BON and NBC.

”Stations must try to regularise or work on a payment plan. The truth of the matter is if there is nothing definite done by trying to pay the money owed NBC we are going to close down quite a number of radio and television stations.

”Especially because we know that a lot of them are targeting elections and the money they will make.
”We will make it impossible for them to make that money because if they do not pay their licensing fees, then they have no right to enjoy any freebies from elections.

The DG also spoke on the issue of sanctions on various broadcasting stations saying that broadcasting ethics stresses that the peace and unity of the country should be paramount.

He said that in a situation where the ethical boundaries have been breached at various times by a broadcasting station, such a station would be sanctioned or shut down as the case may be.

Modibbo said that the commission does not ban songs, but certain songs cannot be broadcast due to their content.
Songs that should be broadcast in Nigeria are songs that families could listen to, he said.

According to him, young artists influence Nigerian children and as such they should be mindful of the songs they air.

“Young people are the greatest export of our country in terms of their artistic work and our country is a country of young people,” he said.

The Federal Government has disengaged seven beneficiaries of its N-Power empowerment programme in Adamawa who abandoned their duty posts, the State Focal Person of the programme, Usman Bodes, has said.

Bodes said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Yola that the affected beneficiaries were dropped after several reports indicated that they were not showing up for work.

“We have been receiving complaints of absenteeism from various places where our N-Power beneficiaries are working.

“We called their attention and advised them to desist from such dubious attitudes, but our advice fell on their deaf ears.

“So we have no alternative than to dismiss them so as to serve as deterrent to others,’’ Bodes said.

On the number of youths engaged into the programme in the state, he said so far, there were 11,318 registered N-Power beneficiaries from 2016 to date.

He noted that lack of effective supervision was the major constraint affecting implementation of the programme.

The official, therefore, called for the upgrade of state N-power offices to give them full supervisory roles, to effectively track the performance of beneficiaries.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says the Air Task Force (ATF) of “Operation LAFIYA DOLE” has neutralised Boko Haram terrorists camps at Zanari and Tunbun Rego, in Borno.

Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja,said that the operation was carried out on Monday.

” The NAF ATF of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has recorded further gains in the ongoing air interdiction operations designed to wipe out remnants of Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) within the fringes of Lake Chad.

” This occurred as the ATF on Aug.20 conducted air strikes on BHT camps at Zanari and Tunbun Rego in Borno State.

” The air strikes at Zanari were planned and executed based on intelligence reports indicating that the BHTs had established a training camp in the village and were converging in an area prior to departing for an attack on own troops locations around the Lake Chad area.

“Accordingly, the ATF scrambled II NAF Alpha Jet aircraft for a pre-emptive strike on two specified locations within Zanari, where the BHTs were assembled,” he said.

Daramola said that the fighter aircraft acquired and attacked both locations, neutralizing several BHTs, with only few survivors seen fleeing the area, adding that ” these were later mopped up by follow-on rocket strikes”.

” Similarly, another identified BHT rendezvous point and staging area on the outskirts of Tunbun Rego was also attacked and destroyed by the Alpha Jets,” the spokesman said.

He said that the NAF would continue to deploy its platforms to conduct intensive Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions in the entire Northeast aimed at discovering the possible locations of remnants of BHTs and neutralising them.

In a recent interview with the international news organization, Bloomberg, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki unsurprisingly declared his intention to contest the 2019 Presidency under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Against the backdrop of the litany of corruption allegations trailing the Senate President, Saraki’s declaration, brings to the fore our earlier call to anti-graft agencies to check the use of stolen public funds to finance elections in this country. We reiterate our position that the Nigerian electorate must have the opportunity to choose from candidates that can pass the integrity and anti-corruption test.

Let us refresh our memory on some of Saraki’s corruption allegations:

· Allegations of fraud which led to the collapse of the Saraki family-owned Société Générale Bank (Bukola Saraki who was Director of the defunct bank was indicted over N1bn alleged to have been looted from the bank’s treasury).

· Misappropriation of Kwara State funds, disregard of government due process and conversion of State government assets into his and cronies when he served as two-term governor of Kwara State.

· History of betrayals, treachery and sabotage – Family, political party (PDP, APC), Senate, government.

· Saraki was questioned by the Nigeria Police Special Fraud Unit over a N11 billion financial scandal at the defunct Intercontinental Bank.

· Gluttonous property acquisitions and hidden multi-billion dollar assets spread across the world as disclosed by the Panama Papers revelations.

· The multi-million dollar white elephant Shonga Agricultural Project in Kwara State when Saraki served as two-term governor.

· Falsification of Senate standing order

· Saraki’s link to the N298m armored Range Rover SUV seized by the Nigeria Customs Service.

· Saraki’s link to $19.5b Paris Club Loan refund scandal

. Oversaw budget padding in the National Assembly

· Among other numerous corruption scandals

Nigerians should be wary of a man whose personal ambition will always supersede the interest of the majority and national interest as currently displayed in the National Assembly. While Saraki refuses to reconvene the National Assembly, the 2019 election budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is dangerously delayed, an action deliberately taken to sabotage INEC’s ability to conduct free, fair, transparent and credible elections in 2019.

While Saraki refuses to step down as Senate President as rightly and severally demanded by the APC-dominated Senate, he is bent on foisting a PDP-minority rule (Senate President and Deputy Senate President) in the Upper Legislative House.

The only politics that Bukola Saraki plays is self, himself only and only himself. The interest and welfare of the people of Nigeria do not mean anything to him. Now it is the Presidency Saraki wants. And we ask with what antecedents is he doing this? Conspiracy, blackmail, treachery and vaulting ambition which overleaps itself and falls on the other, as rightly captured by William Shakespeare. Bukola Saraki will rather rule in hell than serve in paradise.

Ahead of 2019 elections, Nigerians must ensure that we never again entrust the leadership of this great country to thieves whose sole aim is treasury looting and returning us to the dark ages where impunity and institutionalized corruption was the order of the day.

Two women, Chizoba Eze and Amaka Eze, have been arrested by the Imo State Police Command for allegedly buying newborn twins, Emmanuel and Emmanuela, for N1.8m in Umuahia, Abia State.


The women, who were said to be from Enugu State, were paraded on Monday by the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, who said the suspects were intercepted on Owerri-Aba Road.

The suspects were paraded on Monday alongside six others, who also allegedly abducted and sold nine other children.

The police spokesperson Emwerem said,

“In our ongoing onslaught against child trafficking, operatives of the command have rescued newborn twins from suspected child traffickers.“The twins, a boy and a girl, were rescued on Owerri-Aba Road following a coordinated operation by the command.

“The suspects, who impersonated the mother of the twins, have made useful statements. We will charge them to court at the end of investigation.”

The PPRO advised parents to be mindful of those they left their children with, saying child trafficking was an absurdity.
Enwerem accused the six other women that were paraded of being in the business of buying and selling of children.

He said operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the state police command rescued nine children stolen from their parents and guardians in Owerri and Benin by the suspects.

He said,

“On August 15, on Douglas Road, Owerri, FSARS operatives, led by Banjoko Oluwemimo, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, acting on reliable information, arrested two suspects – Chioma Emeka (34), of Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State and Happiness Peter (22), of Iyala Ogoja LGA of Cross River State.”

“Immediately the suspects steal a child, they will change his or her name to erase suspicion. So, parents and guardians, whose children are missing, are advised to report to the Public Relations Department of the Imo State Police Command for the identification and collection of their children.

One of the suspects, Eze, said she paid N1.8m through an arrangement, called sceptic pregnancy, to have the twins.

Another suspect, Ojimba, confessed that she sold one of the babies for N300,000.

A man, whose two children were handed over to him during the parade, Mike Nkwo, said they were stolen on their way to a coaching class in 2015.

For the eight time in successive years, dozens of old women known for trading of mangoes and other seasonal ‎fruits around the school of nursing in Maiduguri have received, directly from their son, Governor Kashim Shettima, a ram each for their Eid adha annual sacrifice.

The women were transported to the Government House today (Monday) with police escort where the Governor ensured each of them went out with a ram. The women were also escorted to their homes after a brief interaction with the Governor.

Since 2011, the Governor had picked compassionate interest in the old women due to their enterprising nature. Every year, he hosted them and personally gives each of them sallah rams.

Governor Shettima had in 2012 built road side stores for the women and has consistently supported them with capitals to support their small scale businesses. In addition, he regularly patronizes the items they sell so they make good profit.

The women are known to regard the Governor as their son with most of them offering daily prayers for him in their gatherings in the midst of doing businesses.

Identical twin brothers, Rev.Frs Emmanuel Ukachukwu Nwokeji and James Okechukwu Nwokeji, have been ordained Catholic Priests in Imo State.

The priestly ordination was held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Orlu on Saturday, August 18th, making them the second set of Twins in the Local government to be ordained as catholic priests.


Last month, identical twins, Rev. Fr. Francis Arinzechukwu Offiah and Rev. Fr. Cornelius Nzubechukwu Offiah were ordained Catholic Priests in Aguluezigbo, Anambra State.

No fewer than three people have been killed and hundreds of people displaced following a monsoon rainfall in Adamawa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a heavy rainfall was recorded in some areas of the state last Thursday night.

The affected areas included Yolde-Pate, Jambutu and Loko in Yola South, Yola North and Song Local Government Areas of the state, respectively.

Reacting to the development, Dr Muhammad Suleiman, the Executive Secretary, Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), however said that only one person lost his live in the flood.

“One person lost his life, while over one hundred people mostly women and children displaced in the recent flood at Yolde-Pate in Yola South Local Government Area.

“Many people are also affected by the flood in Loko village and Jambutu area in Song and Yola North Local Government Areas of the state,” Suleiman said.

He said that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), especially from Yolde-Pate, were camped at the primary school in the area.

The scribe said that the agency has provided relief materials to the victims and appealed to humanitarian actors in the country to come to the aid of the victims.
