Travel / PHOTOS: Two Corp Members Die In Kogi by metronaija: 12:53pm On Dec 03, 2017
The Kogi state NYSC has lost two of its corp members.

The deceased, identified as Ifeanyi Uzumeh and Blessing were batch A, Steam 1, 2017 Corps members.

A corp member who confirmed the death of Uzumeh on Facebook said;

"This is terribly painful and unbelievable that we lost this guy Apostle Ifeanyi Uzumeh (Biggie slim fit)...IMSU feels d pain, History feels d pain, his PPA at Kogi feels d pain, IYP feels d pain, 2017 Batch A stream 1 feels d pain, Imo state feels d pain , Okigwe feels d pain. Very difficult to believe from my side...

But the funny aspect of this so called NYSC scheme is that Nigeria have no stipulated wherewithal of sympathising with a bereaved family who lost a love one in this service...
I would have love to articulate the loop holes of this scheme but my soul is mourning.''

Politics / Germany Dumps ISIS Suspect In Nigeria by metronaija: 6:10pm On Apr 08, 2017
Germany has deported to Nigeria, an alleged Islamic extremist, an ISIS suspect, deemed dangerous by authorities.

The German news agency, dpa, reports that the 22-year-old man who was born in Germany and who hadn’t committed a crime, arrived in Lagos Thursday.

the news agency said he is a German citizen, not Nigerian.

The unidentified man was one of the two individuals detained in February in Goettingen during an investigation of suspected attack plans.

His partner is a 27-year-old Algerian. Both of them lived with their parents in Göttingen.

When the two men were picked up, investigators found two weapons, at least one of them a firearm, that had been altered to fire live ammunition.

Also found on them were ammunition, flags of the Islamic State group and a machete.

The man deported to Nigeria is banned from entering Germany for life.

Following attacks by Islamic extremists last year, German authorities vowed to step up deportations of foreigners deemed to be threats.

The two men, according to www.dw.com were arrested after having been under surveillance for some time.

Politics / FG To Treat Niger Delta As Special Development Area -osinbajo by metronaija: 3:22pm On Mar 26, 2017
The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has urged Nigerians to think and find ways to use the petroleum resources in the Niger Delta region to develop the country for the benefit of its citizens.
Osinbanjo said the Federal Government, in its determination to achieve its development objectives in the Niger Delta area, would treat oil producing communities as special development areas.

The Vice-President spoke in Umuahia, Abia State capital during a one-day town hall meeting with Abia indigenes in line with the Federal Government’s plan to deal with the challenges of the oil producing states in the country.

He said, “In November 2016, the Niger Delta Forum visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa and submitted a 16-point road map on how to develop the oil producing communities.

“The President therefore decided that there must be an interaction with the people and the leaders of the communities, to hear them, seek an understanding about their problems and concerns and present a new road map to develop the oil producing communities.”

He said it was common knowledge that most people in the oil producing communities only hear about oil wells without benefiting from the wealth.

Osinbajo said that oil producing communities must be made the hub of the petrochemical industry and the power sector to create employment opportunities for youths in the area.

Politics / FG Spent $2.6b On Boko Haram War by metronaija: 8:26am On Mar 23, 2017
Nigeria spent more than $2.6 billion in 2016 to address the humanitarian challenges caused by Boko Haram terrorists, Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin, has said.

Olonisakin stated this at the meeting of the ‘Global Coalition Working to Defeat ISIS’ in Washington, D.C.

“After over $2.6 billion was spent by the Nigerian Government to address humanitarian needs in 2016 – more needs were seen when areas were recovered from Boko Haram.

“Many in this room joined us in Oslo, Norway just last February to show support with Nigeria.

“Coalition is fundamental. We, therefore, commend Secretary Rex Tillerson and President Donald Trump for remaining committed to fighting the global enemy of us all – terrorism,” Olonisakin said.

The defence chief explained that Iraq’s story in the war against ISIS was similar to Nigeria’s story in the fight against Boko Haram.

“This meeting, therefore, will further strengthen our collective resolve and determination to destroy and defeat ISIS.

“To this end, Nigeria is prepared to work with the coalition in the pursuit of the first lines of efforts towards the realisation of the aims of the global coalition,” he said.

He commended the steady progress made in Iraq, and Syria in denying ISIS access to territories and closing up their supply routes.

According to him, it is, therefore, imperative that as part of the objectives of the meeting, global leaders consider the value of timely sharing of information and best practices on addressing cross-border threats.

He also emphasised the need for mobilisation of resources for partners in the conflict and confronting violent extremist organizations with the digital battle space or cyberspace.

He added that reshaping the public narratives around ISIS to one of failure, was also critical in the battle to defeat ISIS.

“Let me also add that this meeting is of great importance to Nigeria.

“This is because, Nigeria’s effort to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists is viewed as part of wider efforts to combat violent extremism globally especially, the defeat of ISIS.

“Nigeria is open and willing to adopt strategies from the coalition that could further enhance its success story,” Olonisakin said.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in his welcome remarks, said “it is indeed encouraging to see the attendance”.

“When the forces of ISIS tune into their TVs and their computer monitors, they will see the strength of a combined 68 nations and organisations.

“Together, we share a resolve to deal ISIS a lasting defeat. Our coalition is united in stopping ISIS resurgence, halting its global ambitions and discrediting its ideological narrative.

“And we’re ready to grow stronger and stay aggressive in this battle.

“President Trump, in his recent address to the joint session of Congress, made clear that it is the policy of the United States to demolish and destroy this barbaric terrorist organisation”.

NAN reports that the meeting was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior leaders of the 68 countries of the global coalition working to defeat ISIS.

NAN also reports that among those who attended the meeting were Chargé d’affaires of the Nigeria Embassy in Washington, Hakeem Balogun and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Health / Nigeria Records 100,000 Cancer Cases Annually- Expert by metronaija: 3:52pm On Mar 19, 2017
The Public Health consultant to University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Dr Bodeno Ehis, has disclosed that at least 100,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed yearly in Nigeria.

Ehis, who disclosed the statistics while delivering his lecture in honour of a late Delta State lawmaker, Omawunmi Udoh, in Warri, titled: “Cancer Awareness and Prevention, said more than 16 million new cases of cancer would be diagnosed globally by 2020.

The medical expert who is also a Fellow, National Post Graduate Medical College, Lagos, stated that the figure accounted for 12.5 per cent globally.

He advised Nigerians to live a healthy lifestyle to overcome the global life-threatening disease that was ravaging the world, adding that eating foods rich in fibre was one of such.

Ehis also recommended routine medical checks, insisting that early detection of cancer was the solution to overcoming the global scourge.

He lamented that breast and cervical cancers were prevalent among women while prostate cancer was common in men, saying, the women, depending on their ages, should do a mammogram once or twice in a year.

“Cancer can be prevented if detected early enough, therefore, people should carry out checks at least once in a year, while also doing regular exercises,’’ he advised.

The consultant urged Federal and State governments to intensified its sensitisation on the epidemic to reduce the scourge in the country.

Earlier, the organiser of the event, Rep. Daniel Reyenieju, representing Warri Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, said the gathering was aimed at interacting and sharing ideas on topical issues on health and politics.

He described the late Udoh as a “Legislative Amazon’’ that would forever be missed in the politics of the Delta.

Politics / Magu Wins Leadership 2016 Person Of The Year by metronaija: 9:38am On Mar 19, 2017
Mr. Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has dedicated the 2016 Person of the Year Award bestowed on him by the Leadership Newspapers, to Nigerians just as he faces legitimacy crisis.

Magu who has been rejected twice for the job of the anti-graft agency boss by the Senate because of unfavourable DSS report, called for more support in ridding Nigeria of financial crimes.

“I want to dedicate this award to all Nigerians who have supported us in the fight against corruption,” he said.

Magu was among eminent Nigerians, who were on March 17, 2017 recognised for their achievements in various fields, including business, banking, aviation, leadership, music and education.

The award was bestowed on him for “doing one of the nation’s most challenging jobs in your dogged fight against corruption, working without a letter of confirmation in that acting capacity for over one year”.

Indeed, the award and recognition of this dogged commitment to the fight against corruption, comes a few days after members of the Nigerian Senate on March 15, 2017 chose to overlook the vigour with which the anti-graft czar has led the anti-corruption vision of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

An elated Magu, who noted that he received the award because “the process of selection was transparent and the organisers have high integrity”, has been invited by two leading anti-corruption organizations.

They are Transparency International and Global Witness to speak at an international conference on money laundering and assets recovery on March 21, 2017 in London.

He would be speaking on the topic, “Give Us Our Money Back – Nigeria’s Fight Against Corruption: A Critical Conversation”.

“The commitment of the leadership of this country in fighting corruption is not in doubt, and so I call on everybody to join us in fighting corruption,” he added.

The event, which held at the International Conference Centre, ICC, Abuja, had as its theme, “The Rice Economy”.

The Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, who delivered the keynote speech on the theme, noted that Nigerian government aims at making the country a major producer of rice, like India and China.

“By the time Nigeria achieves self sufficiency in its rice production, it will mean the saving of nearly $7 million a day from our foreign reserves, it will mean a happier society,” Ogbeh said.

Meanwhile, the Senate is not done yet as far as Magu’s confirmation is concerned and its is fighting back to further drive home that Magu was not employable.

Sen. Dino Melaye, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Senator representing Kogi West, has issued a statement on the illegality of continued recognition of Magu as EFCC’s boss.

Melaye joined the debate in the media about whether Magu can continue to act as EFCC boss in spite of his failure to be confirmed by the Senate or if the President can re-nominate him.

Melaye said in a statement that there is a provision of the Senate rules which would not allow members consider Magu for the same position again.

Citing Order 131 of the Senate Rules, Melaye said after the rejection of Magu’s nomination, his candidacy is considered lapse and therefore advised the President to consider a fresh nominee who is qualified, in terms of experience, integrity, knowledge and temperament to lead the anti-graft agency.

Order 131 of the Senate Rules states that “nominations neither confirmed nor rejected during the session or within 21 working days in the case of Ministerial nominees shall be returned by the clerk to the National Assembly to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and shall not again be made to the Senate by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The Senator who insisted that Magu did not impress anybody including those Senators who would have been sympathetic to his cause during the confirmation hearing in the Senate urged President Buhari to look for a replacement and avoid actions that may result in violation of the laws of the land.

“Those suggesting to the President that after failing to scale the confirmation process twice, the President should leave Magu to be acting are only recommending violation of the law, disrespect for due process and perpetration of illegality. All these will only undermine democracy and constitutionalism in our country.

Politics / Obasanjo To Be Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize by metronaija: 12:19pm On Mar 13, 2017
The African Child Foundation, hosts of African Child Prize and the Nigerian Role Model Awards, has concluded plans to nominate Olusegun Obasanjo for the Nobel Peace Prize, as it commended the former president for his outstanding role in peace building in Nigeria and Africa.

The foundation, led by the Country Director, Mr. Donaldson Onosakponome, stated that before Obasanjo’s administration, Nigeria’s GDP growth had been slow since 1987, and only managed 3 per cent between 1999/2000. His words: “Under Obasanjo the growth rate doubled to 6 per cent until he left office. Nigeria’s foreign reserves rose from $2 billion in 1999 to $43 billion on leaving office in 2007.

He was able to secure debt pardons from the Paris and London clubs “During his tenure, he was able to check youth restiveness as well as militant activities in the Niger Delta, and not forgetting his role in enthronement of democracy in various African countries and more recently his peace initiative in Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau and South Africa. “We should be modest to say that Baba is one of the greatest leaders in Africa. We must all be proud to have him in this continent.”
