Politics / Fuel Scarcity: NNPC Releases 250 Trucks To Lagos by metronaija: 5:43pm On Jan 21, 2018
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Sunday said that it had released 250 trucks of petrol to Lagos metropolis for effective dispensing at filling stations to forestall any scarcity.

Mr Ndu Ughamadu, the corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, there has been a slight change in the distribution network in Lagos, as Lagos is currently being supplied by members of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN).

“At the weekend there was a hitch in discharging of petrol by ships which has been ratified.

“Today, 250 trucks have been discharged to Lagos compared to less than 200 trucks usually allocated to Lagos at the weekend,” he said.

The NNPC spokesman said that the ships which commenced discharging since Saturday night had finished discharging, adding that in a couple of hours the long queues will disappeared and normalcy will return to Lagos.

Ughamadu, urged motorist to avoid hoarding of petrol and panic buying, as there is sufficient products in stock that will last for days.

The NNPC spokesperson also acknowledged a slight hitch at the Port Harcourt refinery due to power problem.

“Port Harcourt refinery is slightly down for now, pending when the problem will be rectified.

A NAN correspondent who went round Lagos metropolis however reports that fuel queues had started springing up again in most filling stations in the metropolis.

The queues which were noticed in the early hours of Saturday had begun to increase by afternoon across the state.

Many of the filling stations operated by major marketers were not selling while outlets owned by Independent Marketers were shut.

At Ikorodu, Epe, Mile 12 and Lekki axis most filling stations who had products were selling above the official pump price.

Reacting to the situation Alhaji Abiodun Lawal spokesman of NIPCO said the company was consistently loading and supplying to marketers, but the volume had marginally dropped.

“I can confirm we are currently loading but I don’t have the statistics; however I must say that we don’t have enough supply at the moment. I think that explains the resurgence of queue at filling stations”, he said.

Also, Mr Olufemi Adewole, the Executive Secretary of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketing Association, (DAPPMA) noted that there was shortage of petrol supply across the country.

Adewole said that what is playing out at the moment is the preference of NNPC deploying more supply to the major marketers.

“The truth is that there is short supply at the moment, if NNPC can raise supply we will be able to get to inland areas and focus on major cities, but I can tell you there is no much supply from NNPC,’’ he explained.

Politics / 20 Visa Racketeers Arrested In Lagos by metronaija: 8:08am On Jan 21, 2018
The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) says it has arrested over 20 suspects who specialised in counterfeiting entry visas of some foreign countries.

Spokesman for the PSFU, Audi Lawal, said in a statement on Saturday in Lagos that the visa racketeers were arrested at several embassies of the foreign countries in Lagos.

The police spokesman said that the suspects specialised in forgery of visa processing documents such as passports, bank statements, company letterheads and immigration stamps of several overseas countries.

Lawal said that all the supects confesssed to have committed the crimes and were charged to court for prosecution to serve as deterrent to others involved in such illegal activities.

“The Polıce Special Fraud Unit in its effort to discourage members of the public from patronising racketeers and false document makers, recently busted a cartel which specialises in counterfeiting.

“This cartel specialised in UK, Canada and Shengen visas, Nigerian passports, bank statements, various countries’ immigration stamps and letter of introduction from corporate organisations,” Lawal said.

The PSFU spokesman advised visa applicants against patronising agents using fake travel documents for processing visa at embassies in Nigeria.

He urged visa applicants to always access embassies and high commissions information through their official websites on visa application procedures.

Politics / Sultan Abubakar Criticises Security Agencies Over Benue Killings by metronaija: 3:16pm On Jan 20, 2018
“The killings must be stopped, they have gone too far. This is not the time to apportion blames, but to seek solutions. What are the security agencies doing and when will these killings stop? We must challenge the leaders with one voice, the issues must not be looked at with the prisms of religion or ethnicity.

“We pray not to get to the level of Afghanistan where everybody is bearing arms, but you can’t label Miyetti Allah as a terrorist organisation. It has never sat down to discuss how to kill innocent people and take over their land. The Fulani (herdsmen) don’t care about electricity, roads or the government because they live in the bush.

“We refuse to accept that all Fulani are bad. The crisis in Benue is not a religious or ethnic problem but an economic one. It is a fight between herdsmen and farmers and unless the government takes it seriously, it may get out of hand.”

• The Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, on the security agencies’ handling of the killings by herdsmen in Benue State. That was on Thursday in Abuja at the 1st General Assembly of Inter-faith Dialogue forum with the theme, ‘Living together, achieving together.’

Politics / Presidency: Why Buhari Will Not Talk About 2019 Election Now by metronaija: 9:56am On Jan 20, 2018
The Nigerian Presidency has said President Muhammadu Buhari feels that it’s too early to start talking about 2018 general elections when there are so many important and pressing issues on his desk.

This was in spite of the fact that some governors have been calling on the President to declare his interest to run for second term of office.

Indeed, a campaign office, which is the brainchild of the Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu is due to be opened in Ibadan this Saturday to handle Buhari’s 2019 presidential campaign.

But the Presidency, through Buhari’s Personal Assistant on new media, Bashir Ahmad while debunking a news report by Reuters said 2019 general elections is not yet on the radar of the President.

Reuters had in the report, quoted the President to have granted a radio interview in which he allegedly said that he did not know whether he would seek re-election in 2019.

Reuters had cited Buhari as saying in the interview that the decision was both personal and also one for all Nigerians.

However, the Presidency denied the interview, saying the person who allegedly granted the interview was not Buhari.

Responding in a series of tweets, the Presidency said, “Good afternoon Reuters, could you kindly provide more details on this your report, which radio interview did President @MBuhari talk about 2019 election? #FakeNewsAlert,” Ahmad tweeted.

“This report from @Reuters is NOT true, President @MBuhari didn’t grant any radio interview where he talked about 2019 election, for Mr. President, it’s too early to start talking about next year elections when there are so many important and pressing issues on his desk.”

Reuters has deleted the fake story having discovered it was untrue.

Politics / PHOTO: Grandmum Arrested For Allegedly Burning The Hands Of Her Grand Du by metronaija: 1:25pm On Jan 18, 2018
The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State has arrested one Victoria John for allegedly burning the hand of her nine-year-old granddaughter for stealing.

According to reports, the suspect was arrested after teachers of the minor who is a Primary Three pupil in one of the public schools discovered that she could not write in class. One of the teachers said the pupil was taken to a nearby clinic for treatment where the NSCDC operatives were informed about the incident.

Reacting to the allegations, Mrs John, however, denied knowledge of her granddaughter’s age, saying the girl and her twin brother lost their mother during birth. She claimed she had been taking good care of the twins after they were retrieved from a motherless home in Jaleyemi, Osogbo, the state capital. “Their mother was my daughter,” the suspect said.

“She got pregnant and the man ran away, but I took care of her and when she had complications at childbirth she died. I have been taking good care of these children and what happened is only a mistake. I was only trying to correct the children. They usually steal, and I have been warning them to stop stealing. This money that was stolen is N6000 naira and it is the church money that was put in my care. I only put her hand in the fire because I was angry that the twins lied that they did not steal the money. Please forgive me, it is the devil that pushed me to do it,” Mrs John lamented.

The young girl, on her part, denied taking the said amount but claimed she only took N500 with which she bought an exercise book, bread and pencil. She further called on well-meaning Nigerians to come to her aid as the hand needed medical attention. The NSCDC said the matter would be transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation.

Crime / Robbers Seal 89-Year-Old Woman’s Mouth With Super Glue In Edo (Photos) by metronaija: 8:12am On Jan 13, 2018
TWO suspects have been arrested by men of the Edo State Police Command for allegedly using super glue to seal the mouth of an 89 year woman, Imasogbonre Enahoro, to prevent her for shouting for help.

The suspects also allegedly glued the mouth of her daughter, Marylyn Ajibola, and proceeded to steal valuables and a Toyota Camry car from the victim’s’ residence at Igueben villagen, near Benin.

A third suspect is said to be on the run.

They allegedly stormed Madam Enahoro residence on November 20 and first tied up their victims.

But when mother and daughter kept shouting for help, the unwanted guests decided to use super glue to shut them up.

After searching the house and finding no money the robbers made away with a Toyota Camry car which they drove to Osun State.

Marylyn identified one of the suspects at the police headquarters as the person who slapped her mother and applied super glue to shut her mouth.

She said the incident happened at about 5pm and that it was her husband that eventually untied them on his return from work.

Kingsley, one of the suspects who claimed to be a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, said it was Tosin that brought the robbery plan.

“When we got to Mama’s place, she had no money to give to us. Two of us were outside and Tosin went inside. We found only N7,200 inside the car.

“I did not know that this Mama’s mouth was glued because I waited outside. We have not sold the car. Tosin said he wants to use the car but we told him there is no way we can stay with him in Osun State. I couldn’t stay in his father’s house without doing anything. The car is still in Osun State.”

Police Commissioner, Babatunde Kokumo, said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Politics / Why Buhari Must Re-contest In 2019—governors by metronaija: 8:00am On Jan 13, 2018
Seven governors, including Gov. Nasiru el-Rufa’i of Kaduna State, on Friday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and reiterated the need for him to re-contest in the 2019 presidential election.

El-Rufa’i, who spoke to State House correspondents after the closed door meeting with the president, said though their meeting was apolitical, the governors wanted him to continue running the country beyond 2019.

According to him, people are free to continue to speculate about the 2019 elections, but he and other governors are interested in continuity and stability of the country.

He said: “We are politicians and those of us you see here want the president to contest the 2019 election, we have no apologies for that.

“We believe in Mr President, we want him to continue running the country in the right direction. People can speculate about 2019, we have no apologies.

“Whether they are right or wrong is beside the point. Everybody is entitled to his or her own opinion but as governors, and most of us here with the exception of Yobe Governor, are first term governors.

“We are interested in continuity and stability and we want the president to continue with that.

“Like our leader, the governor of Kano said, we just happen to be here by coincidence and we went to pray and decided to felicitate with the president and we feel satisfied that anytime we see him, he is getting better and better.’’

Other governors, who met with the president alongside with el-Rufa’i, were Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger; Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe, Yahaya Bello of Kogi, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Jibrilla Bindo of Adamawa and Simon Lalong of Plateau.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had released the 2019 elections timetable and directed political parties to conclude all primary elections by October in readiness for the general elections.

The Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on Feb. 16 while governorship and State Assembly elections will be conducted on March 2.

Celebrities / Stephanie Linus Arrives Italy To Advocate Against Human Trafficking by metronaija: 9:42am On Jan 11, 2018
In the wake of the increased rate of human trafficking being experienced by Nigerians trying to migrate to Europe via Libya, Actress and Producer Stephanie Linus has recently arrived in Italy to give support to rescued people and raise her voice against such human rights violations.

This timely intervention is in partnership with the world-renowned international medical humanitarian organisation "Doctors Without Borders" (MSF). Over the next few days, Mrs Linus will visit the rescue ship "Aquarius" to witness their activities and operations. Later she will have meetings with some of these vulnerable women; participate in rehabilitation exercises for the rescued women, media parleys and stakeholder meetings with the aim of alleviating their sufferings and preventing more girls and women from falling prey.

Doctors Without Borders is one of the most impactful humanitarian organisation that rescues thousands of people who faced hazardous conditions trying to enter Europe through the sea yearly. In 2017, the Aquarius (a rescue ship) has rescued 15,078 people.

Mrs Linus has been at the forefront of advocacy over sensitive issues that affect the rights of women and girls. She has done this through several channels such as her advocacy movie – DRY, her role as UNFPA Ambassador; her charity organisation Extended Hands Foundation and many more.

An increasing number of women, mainly from Nigeria, are being trafficked to Europe for sexual exploitation. According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), there has been an almost 600% increase in the number of potential sex trafficking victims arriving in Italy by Sea since 2014. Many of these women were kidnapped against their will or lured with the promise of greener pastures.

Crime / Police, DSS Arrest 4 Persons For Hawking Naira Notes by metronaija: 8:13pm On Jan 10, 2018
he Police and operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) have arrested four persons, including a woman, over an alleged illegal sale of Nigerian currency (Naira) in Lagos State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Chike Oti, disclosed this on Wednesday in Lagos.

Politics / N2m Ransom On Cult Kingpins: Dakuku Slams Wike by metronaija: 10:41am On Jan 10, 2018
Dakuku Peterside, the Director General of Nigeria Maritime Authority has described the placement of cash ransom on 32 alleged notorious cultists, kidnappers, terrorists and murderers in 12 local government areas of Rivers State by Governor, Nyesom Wike in a statewide broadcast on Monday as ‘a mere smokescreen to cover the failure of his regime to protect the people he swore to an oath to protect.’

“That speech is nothing but an attempt by Wike to massage a people already traumatised, who daily bear the marks of their bruised pride. The agony of this situation is exacerbated by the knowledge that while Rivers burnt and roasted, Wike cared less,” Dakuku a former governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress said in statement issued by his media office on Tuesday.

He added that Wike made claims that need further interrogation to actually determine their validity, or, it was an arm of a state propaganda in the broadcast.

Dakuku said, “The first that needs scrutiny is Wike’s allusion that because he visited the families of the bereaved in Omoku and pledged N200 million ransom on the alleged killers on New Year Day, the chief suspect, Johnson Onyedibia, aka Don Wani, was gunned down.

“The fact is that in a state where a sitting governor values the lives of subjects, such calamity would have warranted a visit same day.

“But it took Wike days and that was after he had been informed that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, was sending the Interior Minister to visit Omoku. So, in the face of this even Wike’s visit to Omoku belies sincere grief for the families.

“As always, rather than own up to obvious failure, Gov. Wike made an unsubstantiated allegation against an unnamed “former governor and his ilk”, claiming they had interfered with the state government’s amnesty programme. Lies, no matter how long told, will never cover the truth which in this instance is that Wike’s Amnesty programme was not planned to end insecurity in Rivers State but to offer state cover to designated criminals for purposes known to their patrons.

“In his warped understanding of governance, Wike believes that offering financial baits would turn his page of complicity in this whole saga around. Rivers people cannot be fooled by this display of ineptitude. Wike’s offer of another tranche of cash on criminals is no remediation for the pains, loss and agony caused families.

“Leadership is humane. This is an attribute grossly lacking in the man who oversees the once-sought-after Rivers State. How can Wike face families whose breadwinners and loved ones were gruesomely murdered by the criminals to tell them that oil companies, other politicians outside his fold, Federal security agencies were liable for the murder of their loved ones?

“How can Wike stand against good conscience and the families of the 23 massacred on New Year’s Eve in Omoku, to absolve himself of their death being the state Chief Security Officer of the state?

“Has Wike bothered to empathize with Egbeda community for the gruesome murder of her mothers, father, sons and daughters a few days back? The situation in Andoni is no less worrisome. Can Wike in good conscience, absolve himself in the bloodbath that has turned the state into “Rivers of Blood”? Good conscience would not absolve the guilty.

“Would he as the Chief Security Officer of the state, with unhindered access to daily security statistics, feign ignorance of black spots and flashpoints in the state he was expected to be governor?

“Wike cannot deny that there existed a functional security architecture the previous Administration had instituted that secured the state and made it habitable. Being a key player in that Administration, at least, in its early days, offered him huge access into that structure. But Wike, rather than strengthen it, blew all away in his attempt to erase records of his predecessors. In the face of this, if anybody played bet with the lives of Rivers people, it was Wike.

“Wike’s speech was a warped absolution that presented those persons named as the reason the state had collapsed right in his hands. Nothing can be farther from the truth than that.

“The governor had a lot of grace period to have moved to save the several lives of innocent, law-abiding Rivers people and residents lost to the carnage and orgy of bloodletting imposed on Rivers State by criminals and their sponsors.

What Wike has done, therefore, amounts to submitting to an admittance that he reneged on his oath of office, and so, had failed Rivers people.

“If not, how could it take Wike over 30 months to admit in public that the real governors of Rivers State were criminals?

“Rivers State is already flat. The statistics say so. In its recent listing, a verified agency listed the state as the most miserable state to live in Nigeria at 79.37% rate. With unemployment and underemployment rate at 61.4, the highest in the country, and inflation at 18.01%, the state is already broken.

“The best that Wike can do for the state at the moment, is to end this blame-game and sincerely, for the sake of the state, and for the memory of those whose lives had been brutally ended due to the state’s siddon-look, work with the Federal Government to end this tragedy.”

Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, presented two rescued girls, including Pogu, to the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Usman Durkwa, in Maiduguri.

Nicholas disclosed that Pogu was rescued on Jan. 4, alongside one other girl, Jamila Adams, by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole at Pulka in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state.

He called for proper registration of the girls before handing them over to their parents and guardians.

Receiving the girls, Durkwa lauded the military for their commitment to the rescue of the abducted girls.

“We waited for long for the rescue of the girls; it is a welcome development that the theatre commander was able to rescue the girl within one week”.

Politics / Mass Sack: Kaduna Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Jan. 8 by metronaija: 8:42pm On Jan 07, 2018
The Kaduna State Wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), has directed its member to commence indefinite strike on Monday, Jan. 8, over the sack of 21,780 public primary school teachers in the state.

This is contained in a notice of strike dated Jan. 4, 2018, signed by the union’s Assistant Secretary General, Adamu Anglo, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Sunday.

NAN reports that the teachers were sacked for allegedly failing to score 75 per cent pass mark of the competency test organised by the state government in June 2017.

The notice, circulated to all the union executives in the 23 local government areas of the state indicated that a two weeks ultimatum was earlier issued to the state government to reverse its decision.

According to the union, the decision has become necessary after the state government began issuing sack letters to the affected teachers after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“As a responsible union, we ventilated our grievances before the National Industrial Court, Kaduna, and the court on Dec. 4, 2017, granted an interlocutory injunction, restraining the state government from disengaging any teacher pending the determination of the case.

“The court order was served to Gov Nasir El-Rufai, but surprisingly, he went on to order the distribution of letters of disengagement to the affected teachers, dated Nov. 3rd, 2017.

“We, therefore, met on January 4th, 2018 and unanimously resolved to embark on indefinite strike action on Monday 8.”

The notice also highlighted other unresolved issues with the state government, such as compulsory retirement of secondary school teachers before their due date as against the 35 years of service or 60 years of age provided by civil service rules.

Other issues include non payment of 2015 leave transport grant to 3,338 primary school teachers, as well as 2016 and 2017 leave transport grant to all public school teachers despite deductions at source.

The teachers are also asking for payment of salary arrears of more than 15,000 primary school teachers of one to 12 months from June 2015 to July 2016.

The NUT also said the government has failed pay the salaries to some teachers, while others are under payed.

It stressed that the state government has also failed to promote teachers and provide teaching and learning materials to schools among others. (NAN)

Politics / Buhari’s Appointment Of NFF Board Members A Mistake – Dalung by metronaija: 9:20am On Dec 31, 2017
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has urged football stakeholders to remain calm over some appointments into the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board by the Federal Government.

Dalung, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said efforts were being made to correct an oversight made following the recent appointments into the NFF board.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal government had announced the appointments on Friday of over 1,000 members, including 209 board Chairmen.

They are to fill positions on the boards of government parastatals, including the NFF and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Others are the National Institute for Sports and the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre which are all under the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

Dalung, in the statement released by Nneka Ikem-Anibeze, his Special Assistant on Media, said the appointment of members into the NFF board by government was an oversight.

“By virtue of their (NFF) statutes, members are elected and not appointed.

“The appointments were an oversight which is being sorted out. NFF is governed by statutes and board members are elected by congress and not appointed.

“I am appealing for calm from all stakeholders as it was an administrative oversight. Efforts are tailored towards addressing it very soon.”

The Minister also stated that government and football’s world governing body FIFA were in talks to clarify the issue and assure them that no harm was intended.

“I have spoken with ythe FIFA General Secretary over the situation in Nigeria and conveyed Federal Government’s commitment to upholding the governance structure of the NFF.

“All efforts are on course to liaise with CAF and FIFA on constructive engagement that the situation may likely attract.

“The current board of NFF under Amaju Pinnick has provided leadership but their performance is subject to a congress and not appointment,’’ Dalung stated.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie Oyegun Thursday explained that his loyalty to the present administration led by Muhammadu Buhari, was reason why he is being persecuted by some disgruntled elements in the party who want him out as National Chairman.

Oyegun who spoke in Benin, Edo State, at event in his honor by the Benin National Congres (BNC), said the only thing his adversaries could punish him for is his loyalty.

He siad: “I grew up in an environment where bringing disgrace to the family is the worst thing you can possibly do. Even the family will be the first to disown you.

“In all my life, this is the circumstance that has conditioned me. I do not do things that will not make me sleep soundly at night. I do nothing that will appear as headline in any of the national dailies.

“I have been through several trials, but I have overcome them all. Why have I done so? Because at the end of the day, whether detailed or forensic examination, you will not find that your own Oyegun has done something dishonorable.

“And so, with all the hue and cry, at the end of the whole thing, when we sit down and ask, tell us what he has done, behold the whole situation fizzles out.

“The only thing you can punish him for is loyalty. Edo people are loyal. We look at something, we make sacrifices to ensure that those hands are upheld and neat”

The APC National Chairman who urged Nigerians to be patient with the present administration in delivering the rigth and purposeful leadership for the country, noted that change takes time, consistence of applications, adding that Nigeria cannot afford to go back to the old days.
