ormer Governor Orji Uzor Kalu will celebrate this year’s Christmas in prison as his application for bail pending appeal of his conviction for N7.2 billion fraud was dismissed for lack merit by a Federal high court sitting in Lagos on Monday.

The former Governor had last week filed application for bail from Ikoyi prison where he was serving a 12 year jail term following his conviction for fraud on 5 December.

Kalu, who was the Chief Whip of the Senate before his conviction had anchored his unprecedented demand to be set free after conviction on health challenges which he said the prison health facilities may not be able to handle.

For the first time in the history of Kogi State, Lugard House, its seat of power played host to a large number of Christians who congregated there for a Christmas Carol. The service held Saturday at the newly built Government House Chapel.

Since the state was created nearly thirty years ago in 1991, the Government House has been without a place of worship for Christians. But the current Governor, Alh. Yahaya Bello, a Muslim proved skeptics wrong when he embarked on building the chapel.

The excitement on the faces of worshippers knew no bound as the electrifying music from various Church Choir attracted wild jubilation and ecstatic dancing steps from the worshipers.

The carol, a service of nine lessons, saw the denomination of churches united by their choir group, singing melodious songs to mark the birth of Jesus the Christ. It was followed by the reading of Bible lessons by clergymen and top government functionaries.

The Kogi State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, Bishop John Ibenu in his sermon, said Christmas calls for getting closer to God. He read from the Holy Bible John 3 vs 16 and 1st John 3 vs 5, noting that Jesus came for the salvation of man.

Ibenu lamented that the hearts of man is daily becoming wicked, and said the building of the government house chapel is for man to get closer to God. He described sin as a sickness that has Jesus as its only cure.

In his remarks, the Kogi State Deputy Governor, Chief Edward Onoja, described the maiden edition of the Christmas carol held in the government house as a dream made possible by the commitment of Gov. Yahaya Bello.

He described the coming together to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ in the Government House Chapel as the beginning of a new dawn for the people and assured that with prayers, the state is set to be the envy of other States.

Nigerian Table Tennis players detained in Bosnia-Herzegovina refugee camp in Croatia, have returned home, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) said on Saturday.
Abia Uchenna and Eboh Chinedu, both students of Federal University of Technology Owerri, returned to Nigeria late on the night of Dec. 20.
The two students were officially received by the Secretary of the commission, Mr Sule Bassi, who represented the Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
The chairman welcomed the students back home and asked them to narrate their ordeal in Croatia, so that some lessons would be learnt from their story and most importantly for Nigerian youths to hear and learn from it.
Dabiri-Erewa also urged Nigerian students to always be of good behaviour wherever they found themselves by obeying the laws of the country they were visiting.
She commended the Federal Government through the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Geofrey Onyeama, the Nigerian Ambassador to Hungary, and all mission staff for the humane and prompt response to the plight of the two Nigerians.
After narrating their nasty experiences in the hands of Croatia authorities, the two students said: ”First of all, we want to thank NIDCOM for the kind gesture they have shown us and the citizens of this great country Nigeria when we were passing through the challenges out in the foreign land.
“We want to thank especially Mama Diaspora in the person of Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
”She is indeed a mother – someone that Nigerians in diaspora could depend on.
“The way she spoke to us on telephone from Nigeria when we were in camp in Bosnia was very encouraging,
”We cannot thank her enough, she provided hotel accommodation and feeding when we arrived here in Abuja,” they said.
They applauded the quick intervention of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, and all Embassy Staff in Budapest.
NAN reports that the duo of Uchenna and Chinedu arrived Croatia on Nov. 12, to participate in the fifth World Inter Universities Championship, had visas granting them the right to stay until Nov. 18, 2019.
The InterUniversities organisation confirmed that the original copies of the visas issued by the Croatian authorities to both students was valid at the time of their detention.

The pair, left Pula for the Croatian capital, Zagreb, after the tournament and were supposed to fly to Lagos onNovember.L

“The night before our departure, on the Nov. 17, we checked out from the hostel and went for a walk in Zagreb,” Chinedu said in an interview “Suddenly, we were stopped by the police who asked us for our identification documents.

“We tried to explain that our passports were in the hostel and that we had a regular visa, but they paid no attention to what we were saying .”

The officers allegedly mistook them for undocumented immigrants, put them in a van and transferred them to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina where, that day, Croatian authorities had gathered a group of migrants who were intercepted as they were attempting to cross the country.

Otunba Rotimi Paseda has defeated two other governorship aspirants to emerge as the 2019 governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ogun state.

Paseda who was the 2015 governorship candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria defeated two other aspirants for the SDP’s gubernatorial ticket at the party’s governorship primary conducted across the 236 wards in Ogun State.

The leader of NWC committee who supervised the primary, Mrs. Debbie Nicole, announced that, Paseda scored 11, 644 votes to defeat former commissioner for Information in Ogun State, Sina Kawonise and financial analyst, Opeyemi Agbaje who polled 2,014 and 6, 070 respectively.

With his emergence as the SDP candidate, Paseda becomes the only Ijebu-born candidate in the governorship race among other candidates representing the four geo-political zones of the state.

Paseda in his acceptance speech appealed to all party faithful to join hands with him in order to win next year’s governorship election in the state.

He urged all other aspirants to close ranks and work for the common good of the party as well as the State.

His words: “Firstly, I wish to give all honour to God Almighty, without him this would not be possible. I wish to thank my party, SDP and all the officials for ensuring that the process went smoothly, peaceful and credible.

Chief of Staff to the President Abba Kyari has commiserated with a pilot of the ill-fated Nigerian Air Force fighter jet that crashed in the Katampe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Friday.

He was accompanied by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu during their visit to the Defence Intelligence Agency’s Hospital in Abuja.

They were briefed by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshall Sadiq Abubakar.

The surviving pilot was placed on drips as he lay on the hospital bed.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the that two Air Force jets were taking part in the rehearsals for the 58th Independence Day celebrations when they reportedly collided..

The second pilot has died.

A witness said after the collision, a loud sound was heard by people in the area.

One of the witnesses said he noticed that three Air Force personnel ejected from the jet but two of them drew open their parachute and landed, but the other was unable to open his parachute.

“He landed on the rocky hill and died instantly. The other jet roved and later flew away. Few minutes later; a joint security personnel arrived and cordoned off the scene.

“Some of those security personnel entered the bush leading to the mountain and carried the injured people to a hospital but the other was packed in a human bag”, he said.

Four members of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly called Shiites, have been arrested for attacking the police during a procession at Muchiya, Sabongari, Zaria, Kaduna State on Thursday.

The Kaduna State Police Command Spokesman, DSP Yakubu Sabo confirmed the arrest in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Sabo said “I can authoritatively confirm to you that we have arrested four members of Shiite group at Muchiya, Sabongari, Zaria, who attacked the police during an illegal procession.

“They blocked the road preventing people from carrying out their daily activities, in an attempt to open the road, they vehemently responded using catapults to attack our people from all angles.

“They used catapult with iron rode shooting at the police, as a result of these attacks, one of our vehicles was smashed,” the spokesman said.

He said the arrested persons have been transfers to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further interrogation.

Sabo assured the citizens to go about their normal businesses as the police were doing everything possible to protect lives and property.

“We swore to protect the lives and property of Nigerians, this is our legitimate duty and we will continue to do so.

“In line with this, we carried a ‘show of force’ across the state to forestall breach of peace.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the state government had declared the IMN as an illegal organisation and proscribed it.

The state government had also banned all procession across the state with a view to maintain peace, stability, law and order.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) on Tuesday disclosed that 160 communities had been submerged by flood in the state since the rains began in June.

Alhaji Ibrahim Inga, Director General, NSEMA, disclosed this when officials from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Kaduna Field Office, visited him to assess the extent of flooding in the state.

Inga said that the state government had approved release of N28 million to NSEMA to cater for displaced flood victims in Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps.

He said that the agency had established seven IDP camps for families and persons whose communities were submerged by the flood.

According to the director-general, the IDP camps are located at Zungeru Central Primary School, Maikakaki, Muye, Ceku, Ebbo, Gbaciku and Gungu.

“The flood situation confronting us in Niger is beyond the state’s capacity, even one year of the state’s budget cannot solve the problem, and children and women are the most vulnerable,’’ he said.

Inga said that the Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Association of Medical Practitioners, Red Cross and the State Child Rights Agency were partnering the agency to give aid to victims, especially children and women.

Earlier, Mr Rabiu Musa, Communication Officer and Focal Person Emergency, UNICEF Kaduna Field Office, said that the team was on assessment of the flood situation in the state.

“Our visit to Niger is to assess the situation and report back on what we have seen for further decision and action,’’ Musa said.

The Police Command in Anambra on Sunday unsealed the state secretariat of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a commitment by the two factions that they would be lawful in their conduct.

Mr Haruna Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Awka,

Mohammed stated that the commitment by the two factions was reached during a meeting with the state Police Commissioner Garba Umar.

The PDP Secretariat was sealed on Wednesday following a violent clash between two factions of the party.

The secretariat, located at Udoka Housing Estate in Awka was locked up on Umar’s orders and deployed armed policemen were deployed to keep vigil at the office pending the return of peace.

Meanwhile, the command’s PPRO stated that members of the factions had been advised to be peaceful, as anybody who ignited trouble would be dealt with in line with the law.

Mohammed explained that after a meeting between the police and the PDP officials on Saturday, Umar directed that the office be unsealed.

Some of the aggrieved members of the executive said that they were disappointed with the way and manner the Chairman, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu and about four others, accepted to serve as caretaker members.

The PPRO disclosed that a police team led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr A. A. John, was detailed to unlock the office at about 1.20 p.m. today and withdraw all police personnel deployed, to ensure peace at the secretariat.
