A soldier was crushed to death by a containerized truck along Okota Road, Cele Expressway on Wednesday morning.

Eye witnesses said the accident occurred when a commercial motorcyclist carrying the soldier tried to overtake the truck.

Hoodlums today invaded the venue of the empowerment programme, organised by Senator Ahmed Ogembe for women in Okene, Kogi state.

The Afims Hotel venue was already filled up by guests , party members and the would-be-beneficiaries of the empowerment programme, when the hoodlums came calling, wielding dangerous weapons, attacking people and disrupting the seating arrangement for the event.

The few security men at the hotel were said to have been overwhelmed by the thugs, who scattered tables and chairs and triggered a bedlam.

The thugs said to be armed with dangerous weapons searched frantically for Ogembe who is representing Kogi Central Senatorial district but could not lay hands on him.

Ogembe of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) was said to be a few meters away from the hotel when the thugs came.

The thugs later fled the hotel in different directions to escape arrest.

However, many guests, some political associates of Ogembe and beneficiaries of the empowerment programme were injured during the bedlam.

Ogembe who later showed up at the venue ordered that the injured be taken to hospital for treatment and appealed to the remaining people at the venue to remain calm.

The Senator , after due consultation with his party members announced that the ceremony must hold.

Addressing journalists , Ogembe said that the incident had been reported to the police.

Attempts made to get the police to comment on the incident proved abortive as calls made to the telephone line of the state police command spokesman, ASP William Aya were not answered.

One thousand and two hundred women from five local governments of Adavi, Okene, Okehi, Ajaokuta and Ogori -Magongo , making up the senatorial district were selected to benefit from the programme.

Senator Ogembe gave each woman N20,000 to start a business.

The Senator explained that the gesture was a follow up to an earlier one during which tricycles, motorcycles, grinding machines, generators, sewing machines and other valuable items were given to 1,000 people.

He said that he had also sunk 35 motorized boreholes, fitted with overhead tanks in the five local government areas in the district.

The senator urged the beneficiaries and communities where the projects were sited to make the best use of them.

The management of the African Independent Television, AIT, has sacked at least 300 of its staff.



According to reports, the sack took place today and its believed to have been directed by its owner Raymond Dokpesi who allegedly signed the letters for the disengaged staff.



The exercise was said to have been done to allow a repositioning of the media organisation. AIT, which is part of the DAARS Communications Limited, owes backlog of staff salaries which some put at between five to 13 months.



This comes barely 24-hours after The Sun newspapers purged several of its staff, including senior editorial members.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have deplored Boko Haram attack on Rann in Borno.

IOM said: “a large number of Boko Haram members armed with automatic weapons, rocket propelled grenades and gun trucks attacked the military base in Rann’’.

The UN migration agency said some 55,000 people displaced by the conflict lived in a camp near the base.

“IOM staff reported that during the incident, four soldiers, four mobile police and three humanitarian workers were killed and another three humanitarian workers were injured.

“Two of those killed were IOM field colleagues,’’ Mohammed Abdiker, IOM Director of Operations and Emergencies said.

“We are outraged and saddened at the killings of two of our colleagues in an attack by Boko Haram in North East Nigeria last evening.

“They represented the best in us in assisting displaced civilians. We will miss them,’’ Abdiker said.

UNICEF, in a statement by Marie-Pierre Poirier, UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, also expressed shock on the attack against humanitarian workers in Rann.

Poirier said: “UNICEF is shocked by the attack on March 1, in Rann, Borno State, in which three aid workers lost their lives, three were injured and one is reportedly missing.

“One of these brave workers who lost their lives, and the nurse who is missing, were on the frontline providing critical services supported by UNICEF.

“The two others who were killed were working for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

“We strongly condemn this attack on selfless aid professionals, who were working in the most difficult humanitarian conditions.

“Alarmingly, the number of attacks on aid workers is increasing around the world, and we must stand together to reaffirm our commitment to protect them. Humanitarian workers should never be a target.

“UNICEF offers its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to all IOM staff members. We will continue to work with the Government to ensure safe return of those missing.”

The UN statement, issued by its Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, had also strongly condemned the killing of the three aid workers in Rann town.

“Three aid workers were also injured, and a female nurse is missing and feared to have been abducted,’’ Kallon said.

He said the UN was also concerned about other civilians who may have been injured or killed in the attack.

“Two of the deceased aid workers were contractors with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), working as coordinators in a camp in Rann for 55,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

“The other aid worker was a medical doctor employed as a third-party consultant with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),’’ Kallon said.

Yesterday, an AIr Peace Flight was prevented from landing at the Akure Airport in Ondo state after cows strayed onto the runway. FAAN has released a statement apologizing for the incident. Read the statement below

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to apologize to Air Peace Airlines and our esteemed passengers for a runway incursion incident that prevented an Akure airport bound flight from landing for some minutes.

The Air Peace flight, which left Lagos for Akure could not land immediately as some cows had strayed into the runway of the airport.

However, normalcy was restored quickly, as officers of the aviation security department quickly dispersed the cows from the runway and the aircraft was cleared for landing.

The Authority will like to assure travellers and the general public that efforts are already ongoing to close the gap that aided this incident.

The Presidency on Saturday confirmed the death of two members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s extended family in Daura, Katsina state.

A statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja, said the two senior members of the family died within a few hours of one another.

According to Shehu, one of the deceased persons, Hajiya Halima Dauda, was the President’s niece and younger sister to his close associate and nephew Malam Mamman Daura.

Halima Dauda, aged 56, who has since been buried in Daura, left behind 10 children, including one of President Buhari’s Personal Assistants, Mohammed Sabi’u Tunde.

The presidential aide revealed that the burial was attended by a federal government delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari.

Others on the team were the Minister of State, Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika; three Senior Special Assistants to the President, Sarki Abba, Ya’u Darazo and Garba Shehu; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Ahmed Abubakar.

Others included the State Chief of Protocol, Amb. Lawal Kazaure, the Permanent Secretary, State House Jalal Arabi, Alhaji Isma’ila Isa and Sayyu Dantata both of them businessmen.

The Buhari family had earlier on buried Hajiya Ai’sha Alhaji Mamman on Friday. She was the wife of the President’s older brother, Alhaji Mamman.

Receiving condolences on behalf of the Buhari family, Malam Mamman, thanked God for the lives of the deceased and all the visitors for sharing the moment of grief with them.

Shehu disclosed that among those received by the family in Daura were the Gov. Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu and a former Military Governor of Kaduna State, retired Brig.-Gen. Jafaru Isa.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on January 30, 2018 arraigned one Mahmoud A. Sadiq before Justice Lawan Wada of the Kano State High Court on a one count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.



The accused person allegedly obtained the sum of N410,000 (Four Hundred and Ten Thousand Naira Only) from the complainant under the pretext that the said money was to secure him a job at the Umar Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina.



Upon receipt of the petition, the Commission swung into investigation which later revealed that the accused person is not a staff of the University as he claimed, rather, he is a contract staff of Federal College of Education, Katsina.

The accused person pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

Counsel for the prosecution, Musa Isah requested a date for hearing in view of the plea of the accused person. The defense counsel I M Sheik, moved a bail application for his clients, which was granted in the sum of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira Only) and two reliable sureties.


The case has been adjourned to March 27, 2018 for trial. The accused is to be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has assured the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that it had no plan to embark on any strike action.

PTD Chairman, Otunba Oladiti Salman, who spoke with the NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, Mr. Ndu Ugbamadu, on Friday stated that the purported ultimatum to government by NUPENG over the state of some roads in the Country was a ruse.

Otunba Salman said PTD strongly disowned the statement which has been trending in the social media, saying the misinformation is a calculated attempt by mischief makers to cause panic in the Country.

The PTD Chairman disclosed that his union was on the same page with government having had a parley Thursday 1st February in Abuja with the Honourable Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, where he noted comprehensive reports of on-going repairs and reconstructions of damaged highways were discussed.

Otunba Salman explained that at the meeting, the union was reassured by the comprehensive reports of all the on-going repairs and reconstruction of the damaged highways in parts of the Country, in addition to the promise of commencement of palliative works on them.

He informed that PTD would continue to champion the interests of its members always.

he timely intervention of Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani-Bello saved the lives of students of Army Day Secondary School, Minna attacked by some hoodlums from bleeding to death on Friday.

Two students of Army Day Secondary School were attacked by the hoodlums on their way home after school hours in front of the gate of the Niger State College of Education, Minna.

Governor Sani-Bello who was on official assignment to Tunga Malam, in Paikoro Local Government area ordered his convoy to stop at a sight of the some students soaked in blood from injury sustained from the attack by some hoodlums.

He then directed his personal physician, Dr Ahmad Shehu to stabilised the victims before the ambulance on his convoy rushed the injured students to IBB Specialised Hospital Minna for further treatment.

No sooner the hoodlums who were alleged to have come the neighbouring Sango area of the state capital saw the convoy that they took to their heels to avoid been arrested by the security operatives of the governor.

Governor Sani-Bello then directed the state Commissioner of Police Mr Paul Yakadi to effect the arrest of the hoodlums and ensure their prosecution.

“This is unacceptable.We will not tolerate this impunity. How can some hoodlums attack students on their way home after school. I have directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure that all those responsible for the attacks on these students are arrested and prosecuted.

“We will continue to ensure that our people continue to enjoy relative peace and arresting the hoodlums will serve as deterrent to others with same intentions.”

“Parents and guardian should rise up to their responsibility. We have to keep watch on our children, ensure effective monitoring of our wards, the kind of company and peer group they associate themselves with,”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the demolition of its Borno State Chapter Secretariat on the order of the state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, addressing journalists on Monday in Abuja described the action as a direct assault on the nation’s democracy.

He also described it as a gross effrontery against the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Ologbondiyan also described it as part of plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to cling to power.

He recalled that the PDP secretariat along Dandal Way in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital was demolised on Sunday Jan. 21, on the instruction of the state government..

“It is already in the public domain that the APC government in Borno state, for fear of the increasing popularity of the PDP, had mounted pressure on the owner of the building to eject our party.

“Frustrated by the refusal of the landlord, the governor issued a revocation of the Certificate of Occupancy on the property.

“He immediately instructed the agents of his government to demolish a house belonging to a citizen without any authorization of a court of competent jurisdiction.’’

Ologbondiyan said that the party had directed its Borno state chapter to immediately seek redress in the court of law.

“We shall explore all processes within a democracy to ensure that Governor Shetima rebuilds the house, and that his government is made to face the spirit and letters of the law.

“The PDP wants peace but not at the expense of direct violation of the nation’s democratic tenets and principles, which we successfully nourished and nurtured in our 16 years in office.’’

He called on all lovers of democracy in Nigeria and across the world to join the party to collectively condemn the action.

Ologbondiyan also condemned “unrelenting persecution, arrests, detention and trial of opposition members as well as perceived opponents of government, including innocent business concerns.

These, according to him, were in line with the grand plot to discredit and stifle opposition in Nigeria.

He said that the ruling party having realised that its chances of winning the 2019 elections get slimmer by the day has now resorted to a vicious plot to physically attack PDP members and offices.

“Nigerians have not forgotten the political tension created in PDP strongholds in various states, including the recent attacks on our members, such as the attack on those holding a lawful meeting in Idanre, Ondo state.

“Also, the increasing unwarranted attacks by security forces on journalists, media houses and other well-meaning Nigerians carrying out their legitimate duties.’’

Ologbondiyan alleged that they were attacked simply because they hold different opinions from those of ruling party interests.

He charged members of PDP to be at alert, calm and continue to work with party leaders at all levels.

Borno PDP Secretariat demolished

The Police in Zamfara have confirmed the abduction of two children of Yahaya Chado, the member representing Maradun/Bakura Federal Constituency.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mohammed Shehu, told newsmen in Gusau on Monday that the children were abducted after the gunmen invaded the lawmaker’s home village at Gora in Maradun Local Government.

He said three persons were killed and four others wounded during the attack at about 1 a.m on Monday.

One of the villagers, Kabiru Mai-Kwashe told NAN that the abductor came on 20 motorcycles, with each motorcycle conveying two armed persons.

“They shot sporadically in the air before going to the house of their victims.

“The gunmen forcefully took away the two victims, Muhammad Yahaya, 27, and his elder brother, Junaidu Yahaya, who is about 35 years old,” he said.

According to him, after the gunmen left the house, they also shot and killed six persons and wounded four others.

Mai-Kwashe added that one of those abducted later returned with a telephone number ostensibly given by the abductors directing his father to contact them “if he wants to see his eldest son again.”

NAN gathered that the abductors had demanded for a ransom of N10 million before they would release the victim.

The police spokesman said a combined team of police and military personnel had been deployed to conduct extensive search for the gunmen and rescue the victim.

He said that those killed and wounded during the attack were taken to Maradun General Hospital.
