If only Nairaland was a country, the words of Allah should have been activated: [9:123] Al-Tawbah-التَّوْبَة "یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا قَاتِلُوا الَّذِیۡنَ یَلُوۡنَکُمۡ مِّنَ الۡکُفَّارِ وَ لۡیَجِدُوۡا فِیۡکُمۡ غِلۡظَۃً ؕ وَ اعۡلَمُوۡۤا اَنَّ اللّٰہَ مَعَ الۡمُتَّقِیۡنَ ﴿۱۲۳﴾ O believers! Fight against those of the disbelievers who are around you (i.e., who are directly involved in hostilities and terrorist activities against you). And (fight in a way and at a time that) they find in you toughness (of might, valour and defensive capability). And bear in mind that Allah is with those who guard themselves against evil. [2:190] Al-Baqarah-الْبَقَرَة "وَ قَاتِلُوۡا فِیۡ سَبِیۡلِ اللّٰہِ الَّذِیۡنَ یُقَاتِلُوۡنَکُمۡ وَ لَا تَعۡتَدُوۡا ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یُحِبُّ الۡمُعۡتَدِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۰﴾ And fight (in defence) in the cause of Allah against those who impose war on you. (Yes,) but do not exceed limits. Surely, Allah does not like those who exceed limits. [2:191] Al-Baqarah-الْبَقَرَة "وَ اقۡتُلُوۡہُمۡ حَیۡثُ ثَقِفۡتُمُوۡہُمۡ وَ اَخۡرِجُوۡہُمۡ مِّنۡ حَیۡثُ اَخۡرَجُوۡکُمۡ وَ الۡفِتۡنَۃُ اَشَدُّ مِنَ الۡقَتۡلِ ۚ وَ لَا تُقٰتِلُوۡہُمۡ عِنۡدَ الۡمَسۡجِدِ الۡحَرَامِ حَتّٰی یُقٰتِلُوۡکُمۡ فِیۡہِ ۚ فَاِنۡ قٰتَلُوۡکُمۡ فَاقۡتُلُوۡہُمۡ ؕ کَذٰلِکَ جَزَآءُ الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۱﴾ And (during war) kill (the aggressing and combating disbelievers) wherever you find them, and drive them out (through military operation by the state) from where they drove you out. And rousing mischief and disruption is a severer (crime) than killing. But do not fight against them in the proximity of the Sacred Mosque (Ka‘ba) unless they themselves fight there against you. Then if they attack you, kill them (in defence), for that is the right penalty of (such aggressing and combating) disbelievers. [2:193] Al-Baqarah-الْبَقَرَة "وَ قٰتِلُوۡہُمۡ حَتّٰی لَا تَکُوۡنَ فِتۡنَۃٌ وَّ یَکُوۡنَ الدِّیۡنُ لِلّٰہِ ؕ فَاِنِ انۡتَہَوۡا فَلَا عُدۡوَانَ اِلَّا عَلَی الظّٰلِمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۳﴾ And keep fighting against them until the disruption and mischief is totally eliminated and the Din (Religion) practically becomes subservient to Allah alone (i.e., the system of the protection of peace, security and human rights is practically established). But if they desist, then offensive action is not permissible except against the wrongdoers (i.e., transgressors). Rescue us from this town whose (affluent and influential) people are oppressors, and appoint for us some guardian from Your presence, and make someone our helper from Your presence’? [4:76] Al-Nisā-النِّسَآء "اَلَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا یُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِیۡ سَبِیۡلِ اللّٰہِ ۚ وَ الَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا یُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِیۡ سَبِیۡلِ الطَّاغُوۡتِ فَقَاتِلُوۡۤا اَوۡلِیَآءَ الشَّیۡطٰنِ ۚ اِنَّ کَیۡدَ الشَّیۡطٰنِ کَانَ ضَعِیۡفًا ﴿٪۷۶﴾ Those who believe fight in the way of Allah (for the restoration of peace and elimination of oppression and exploitation), and those who disbelieve fight in the way of Satan (for evil and mischievous objectives). So, (O believers,) fight against Satan’s allies (the enemies of humankind). Surely, Satan’s maneuvering is ineffective. I dey come... |
Working long hours is may lead to unexpected work-related death, according to the World Health Organisation, WHO, and the International Labour Organisation, ILO. Joint estimates by the two organisations show that almost two million people die worldwide from long working hours, pollution and poor conditions, contributing to the increasing trend of death from work-related causes. According to findings by the Global Monitoring Report, 81 per cent of the 1.9 million work-related deaths in 2016 occurred as a result of non-communicable diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke and ischemic heart disease (heart ailments caused by narrowed heart arteries), while 19 percent were caused by work-related injuries including road injuries, falls, drowning and injuries by mechanical forces. The general standard according to ILO is 48 regular hours of work per week, with a maximum of eight hours per day. The WHO director-general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, described the findings as a wake-up call to countries and businesses to improve and protect the health and safety of workers. “It’s shocking to see so many people literally being killed by their jobs,” Tedros noted. From the estimates, work-related exposure to gases, fumes and particulate matter led to an estimated 450,000 deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. “The risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has been estimated to be increased by 58—182 per cent among people occupationally exposed to particulate matter, gases and fumes, compared with people unexposed to this occupational risk factor,” the report says. According to the WHO “deaths from heart disease and stroke associated with exposure to long working hours rose by 41 and 19 per cent respectively. This reflects an increasing trend in this relatively new and psychosocial occupational risk factor”. Yuka Ujita, senior specialist at ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, says 19 major occupational risk factors and their associated health outcomes were analysed to obtain a precise estimate of the number of work-related deaths. Frank Pega, technical officer for environment, climate change, and health at WHO and lead author of the report, noted that in low- and middle-income countries, the largest risk factor is exposure to long working hours. He said workers in the informal economy living in poverty may be forced to work long hours for survival. Workers in industries with poor working conditions and are exposed to high levels of air pollution are more prone to suffer deaths from stroke, heart disease, and diseases of the lung. An obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr Akinsola Akinde, has advised women against consuming their placentas, saying there is no medical evidence to support its health benefits to new mothers. Akinde, former Chairman, Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos. The placenta is an organ that delivers oxygen and nutrients from the mother’s blood to the fetus. It also removes waste products from the baby’s blood. NAN reports that the act, known as placentophagy, is simply the practice of consuming the placenta after birth, and it gaining popularity among more women after childbirth. The practice is gaining wide acceptance and popularity as more celebrities, social media influencers and proponents of the practice post their experiences online. Some women opt to drink the placenta in a fruit smoothie within hours of giving birth, while some eat it raw, cooked, dehydrated and encapsulated into pills for use over time. Human placentophagy is touted by some as a treatment for postpartum depression, reduce fatigue, boost milk supply, and replenish vital nutrients. Akinde, however, said that the proposed health benefits were not scientifically proven, adding that the benefits were made up to justify the act. “Medically, the placenta is a waste product because they are often colonised with bacteria. Many are infected. “So, it is not advisable to eat something that is potentially teeming with bacteria, which may even be pathogenic. “Some women may want to jump on the placenta-eating bandwagon because someone they know or respect claims it’s “the best thing ever”. “I will advise them to exercise caution till scientific evidence proves that placentophagy is beneficial to human health,” he said. He said that the placenta does have protein and fats, however, stressed that those nutrients could be found in a healthy diet. Akinde stressed that placentophagy could be harmful to the mother and baby, noting that healthcare providers should be consulted about proven alternatives for postpartum and other concerns. Also, Dr Tunji Akintade, a general physician, said that placentophagy was strange to the African culture whose normal practice was to bury the placenta after childbirth. He added that government policies dictate that placenta should be bagged and disposed of as a medical waste, adding that keeping it for hours breeds infection. Akintade warned that not all trends seen online or in the western society should be imitated; stressing that some could pose great danger to health. Also, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that the intake of placenta capsules should be avoided owing to inadequate eradication of infectious pathogens during the encapsulation process. https://www.vanguardngr.com/ |

Damboa is about an 85km drive from Maiduguri the state capital located centre of the sambisa forests in the southern Borno Senatorial District. Due to the closing of the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu 185km road, the resilient people living in the Council area have to spend more than 450km drive before accessing Damboa and Maiduguri. Sources told our Vanguard that the insurgents stormed the community at about 5:30 pm, stressing that, many were feared dead and injured including the terrorists, with properties set ablaze at the time of filing this report. The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) has described Nigeria’s constitution as forged and entrapping to some ethnic groups. The said the nation needs new laws and called on the United Nations (UN) to fastrack the process. This was contained in the group’s independence message signed by its General Secretary and Spokesperson, Ayo Opadokun. NADECO was one of the major groups that fought for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria in the 90s. The group battled the Sani Anacha military regime in its quest to actualize the mandate given by Nigerians to the late Moshood Abiola in the June 12, 1993 presidential election. The group said the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration prefers to trivialise the genuine demands of some ethnic groups, which it said are entrapped, humiliated and oppressed. Since the military takeover in 1966, it said, “politicians in military uniform” had halted the national progress, and development,” the group said. “They have equally dashed the hopes and aspiration of most Nigerians at independence that the country would be a beacon of light that would provide credible leadership to the black race and contribute significantly to human progress and civilization…It is needless but necessary to restate that the centralisation and unitarisation of Nigeria had since created injustice, unfair play, inequity, wanton disregard and disrespect for the rule of law. Abiola’s daughter READ ALSO: How Nigeria can achieve peace, unity – Sultan “The Nigerian State has failed to provide security for lives and property a fundamental right which is its primary responsibility under the UNO Protocols, African Charter on Peoples Rights, and its domestic legislation.” The group further lamented the activities herdsmen, Boko haram and bandits across the country whom they said have killed, maimed and kidnapped for ransom several thousands of Nigerians including school children as well as ethnically cleansed several native communities in the North-central, North-west, North-east and Southern Nigeria without any manifest government successful counter action to deter these outlaws from their assault on most Nigerians. NADECO added that the Nigerian State, in clear violation of oath of office, have failed to use available modern technology for counter insurgency to track down, arrest and kill the outlaws at the points where they are harvesting several billions which central and state governments and civil populace have been forced to pay as ransom – thereby exposing that the government is directly or indirectly complicit in their deadly violations of peoples rights and terrorist attacks. “President Buhari’s led government had frustrated in Nigeria any legal avenue where the entrapped ethnic nationalities can seek redress for the many instances of humiliation, repression, hounding and subjugation of majority of Nigerians by the sectional dictates and wishes of his Fulani controlled security agencies and outlaws,” part of the statement read. The group therefore, implored the United Nations, its Security Council and other Global bodies concerned with peaceful co-existence of the world to urgently fast-track their preparations to conduct variously demanded for referendum (in the constitution review) to ascertain the wishes and aspirations for those entrapped. “NADECO hereby requests the UNO, its Security Council and other Global bodies to critically accept that their failure to act timeously on these legitimate demands for their intervention may tantamount to an invitation to possible national conflagration and unmanageable national crisis which may result into consequential deleterious situations on the West African Sub-Region, the African Continent and the World in general. “Let it be remembered that Nigeria as the most populous black nation in the world has about 200 million citizens residing in a suffocating geographical and political space, the possible reaction of the entrapped ethnic nationalities who are already overwhelmed with repression, discriminations on religion, gender, ethnicities can quickly result to national upheavals, forced dispersal and migration with their attendant global consequences.” https://www.premiumtimesng.com/ |

Buhari says he’s done better than Obasanjo, Yar’adua, Jonathan. Data shows opposite Agric sector has grown at the weakest rate under the Buhari administration than any other government since 1999. ByAbdulkareem Mojeed October 1, 2021 3 min read President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said no democratically elected government since 1999 has achieved what his administration has done in six years, but available data shows otherwise. The president, during a televised broadcast to commemorate the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, said his administration has achieved a lot since coming to power in 2015. “No government since 1999 has done what we have done in six years to put Nigeria back on track,” he said. “A lot has been achieved in the last six years on many fronts: in infrastructure, social care, governance, Nigeria’s image and influence in Africa and the international community. “Critics misdiagnose incremental progress as stagnation. Since coming to power, this administration has tackled our problems head-on in spite of the meagre resources,” he said. Data shows opposite While Mr Buhari claimed his administration has outperformed his predecessors since the inception of democracy, available data shows otherwise. Although the Buhari government has recorded relative success especially in infrastructure and social safety provision, it has underperformed in the management of the economy, security, education, and health. The administration’s anti-corruption campaign has not fared any better than its predecessors. Nigeria has more poor people now than before, and governance continues to be dogged by inefficiency and waste. The government has also been increasingly less tolerant of dissent than some of predecessors. Despite its professed commitment to developing the agricultural sector, and indeed investment in the sector, agriculture has grown at the weakest rate under the Buhari administration than any other government since the return of democracy in 1999. Analysis of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by Statisense, a data analysis platform, revealed that the country’s agric sector under the Buhari administration grew at an average of 15 per cent in the past five years of the government. By comparison, the sector grew by 133 per cent under the Obasanjo administration; 19.1 per cent under President Musa Yar’adua’s short tenure and 22.2 per cent under Mr Jonathan’s government. The Buhari government has invested substantially in agriculture, and the sector remains the biggest employer of labour in the country. The slow sectoral growth implies the government’s intervention has not been effective enough to yield required outcomes, and analysts say a major impediment may be poor implementation. After the expiration of the Agricultural Promotion Policy last December, Nigeria still does not have any officially communicated agricultural policy speaking to where the sector is headed. Insecurity on the rise Mr Buhari has also performed poorly in security. The president vowed to tackle “head on” the Boko Haram insurgents who at the time had taken over several local government areas in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. He vowed to crush Boko Haram within three months and recover all the territories it had seized. But six years after and less than two years to the end of his final second term, insecurity has worsened beyond the Boko Haram insurgency. Virtually all parts of Nigeria are currently battling one form or another of violent crimes, evidence that the president has failed to keep his promise on security. The Global Terrorism Index (2019) ranked Nigeria as the third-worst nation prone to terrorism with no improvement since 2017. Asides insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and secessionist violence are pushing Nigeria towards the brink of collapse with many calling for the resignation of the president for “failing” to secure the country. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/ |
