Nigerians on social media have criticised the N100,000 prize awarded to Lawal Oluwafemi, the Best Graduating Student of the Obafemi Awolowo University for the 2017/2018 session. Lawal was presented with his prize at the convocation of the university. He shared the news on Twitter on Saturday and users of the platform have been congratulating him. Besides congratulating Lawal, Twitter users have also pointed out that the prize money was too small. Critics of the prize money weighed Lawal’s prize against the N30 million that the winner of the last Big Brother Naija reality TV show went home with. Lawal, who graduated with B.Sc Accounting from OAU, had tweeted, “Two days ago, I graduated from the Obafemi Awolowo University as the Best Graduating Student for the 2017/2018 session with a historic 4.98 CGPA out of a possible 5.0.” He added that, for four consecutive times, he was also the overall best candidate in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria’s professional exams. In all, he had won 14 awards in ICAN, with another 22 academic awards, all within the space of four years. “[It] can only be God!,” he concluded. Finding exactly what to buy and sell is one of the first problems that many would-be entrepreneurs encounter in their quest to find a means to make money through trading.. A lot of people will say money is the first problem to start a business, but as much as money is key, getting the idea of the right thing that sells and would always sell is much more important. There are lots of people with thousands of naira in their accounts today, who are constantly going online to see, what exactly they can do with the money, so getting the right product or service that is needed is the first hurdle to cross when searching for a good business. By putting the environmental factors, the Political, and sociocultural norms in a business environment into consideration, here are 5 things that will always sell in Nigeria, come what may. 1. Food: As a student back then, once I withdraw my monthly stipends from banks, the very first thing I do is to head to the market to stock my food buckets, and there are thousands of people like me around the country, who do that weekly or monthly, once they get any money or collect Salaries. Food is unarguably the no 1 basic necessity of life. It is the real fuel that drives existence and has become what no one can do without. It doesn’t want to understand that there is recession in town or you’re broke. You either borrow to get food to eat or you beg. There is no just anyway you will boycott buying foods except one who is ready to die of hunger, and as such, food remains world no 1 thing, that humans and animals think about each day. Going into food related businesses is sure a right way to go. And you can never go wrong with one. Just study your environment, know exactly what kind of food services you can provide and you will continue being relevant in the area. Examples of food related services are as follows. Raw foodstuff Retailing in Neighborhood or Market – Look for Farmers that are willing to sell their Agro products and take them to places where these food commodities are highly needed or scarce. E.g Buying Yam from Benue or Niger State and transporting them to Lagos to resell. No matter how small, you will see little gains. Cooked food Vendor for schools, factories, or on streets. As long as people move around and population keep increasing, you may be in this business for decades, doing well. I have friends whose mothers are food vendors that were always first to pay school fees and enjoy better care than many. Others are Manufacturing of food and beverages, pure water factory, frozen foods, selling and grinding of pepper, selling vegetables, palmoil retailing, daily needs food grocery store, retailing packaged brand food items, selling of fruits and beverages etc. The most interesting thing about all of the above food businesses is that you can start some with just N50,000 and others with N300,000. Think about this, do your research and go for it. 2. Health Related Products: Health they say, is wealth. It is wealth to the healthy and also to the one providing healthy services. Everyday, there are millions of people globally searching for the right drugs or health related products to put them back into shape or let them forget their health worries. This put Healthcare industry one one of the most patronized industries after food. We are in world where a lot of things are threatening our existence on this space called Earth, and many people wouldn’t mind spending their last kobo to ensure they get healed, hence health business is growing hugely. From tablets to body fitness products, to cream for skin problems to tons of herbs products for sexual enhancements, people are making lots of thousands daily from the healthcare industry and you can be part of them too. I know there are hundreds of people around us who will pay any amount to get the best weight reducing drug or tea, as I write. Many have bought many that didn’t work. And If you know any one that works, then you are sure in money. Just keep advertising on social media and go to big places like campuses, religious centres, and show them testimonies from those who have used it and how they never stopped thanking you for being a life saver. You will sure have many willing to try yours. Other products you can sell easily are those treatment herbs or drugs for Arthritis, Blood pressure – these are nightmare for many old folks. Another is Pimples – oh this one can mess up your confidence and pretty face. As I write, some can spare N5000 to buy one cream that will heal every and they can become reseller. Research today and know what works better and you will be rolling in money. 3. Clothes: The Fashion industry is a big one, world over and it generates over a million dollars revenues to operators of those in the sector. I once advertised some chiffon tops for my cousin on nairaland in 2016, from the bale of Okrika she bought and we had callers from as far as Bayelsa states, PH, Abuja who we sent all the choices to, from Lagos and even after moving to a bigger business, we still get calls almost weekly if those clothes are still available. People change Jobs, and get office works daily, they are always in need of office clothes in numbers, you can be providing this service. New born mothers are always buying clothes for their babies as they grow in sizes, you can specialize in this kind of clothes. You can sell new or fairly used. Above all, Nigerians love partying, there is almost no weekend especially on Saturdays where more than 1000 guests are not putting on clothes they are just wearing for the first time. There are many party uniform wears like Ankara, Lace in what Yoruba calls “And-Co or Aso Egbejoda”. A single fabric seller can supply all. So, clothing business is indeed a lucrative one especially if you are well located and connected. After all everyone wants to look good. 4. Gadgets: Since the communication industry has been liberalized in Nigeria, that gave everyone access to having a phone, to communicate with others, and as such mobile phones have become one of those most patronized Items in Nigeria. Everyday people get tired of their old phones because of adverts of a new Iphone this or that, or Androids that they see. Some want another smaller phone. Some people are too careless, they spoil their phones easily or get it lost, and because they can’t risk being blank, getting urgent replacement is the next option. An Igbo business man came to my phone repairer friend one day, he was getting unease and started asking if the phone is repairable or not, or he should go and buy another one because he is already loosing some business deals because of the faulty phone. That’s how important phones are to many people, if not all. Today, even a jobless graduate will buy N50,000 worth of mobile phone and when it gets damaged, he or she will find means to beg uncles or parents to get a replacement. Like phones, there are other gadgets especially phone accessories that people buy daily, such as headphones, chargers, USB cables, earpiece, bluetooth, casein, desktop chargers, etc. You can try selling phone accessories too. Another popular gadget people use alot is laptop. Oh, Laptop selling is another cool business. You can buy 5 laptops at N50,000 each and sell one at N60,000. Making ten thousand on a unit product is such a cool business. All you need is marketing to the right people, especially students and office people. You can grow steadily in this business. 5. Housing Items: Everyday we all come from a home and get dispersed into the street in search of our daily breads and at dusks we are all heading home to keep our head, or to get some rest. Home is part of man and no matter where how comfortable outside might be, there is always something that will be telling you that it is time to go home. So, making a good home is the business of many. Everything you see in a building from construction to finishing shows businesses of lots of people. Few things you can sell for home builders are; planks, roofing sheets, iron rods, cements, curtains, rugs, carpets, plumbing materials, furniture, kitchen utensils, gardening tools, electronics, etc. And because people move from homes to homes, cities to cities, the need for most of these items is becoming an everyday thing, hence you will always have new buyers.. You can easily research more on any of this and begin your journey into the business world. I hope this is a bit helpful? I heard someone saying “Business is not for everybody abeg” and I laughed. But when we loose our jobs and new jobs are not coming. Next is what good business can I do with 300k in Ibadan. Help me pls! It’s urgent. Then suddenly business becomes something for you. Lol. You want us to become online beggars or gets frustrated? Lol The truth is that some people may not get new jobs until after a year when they are fired. But if work stops, will bills stop? Lol People retire and the next is searching for businesses to do. As long as money making is tied to businesses and service rendering, the place of self employment will always be huge. Like I used to say, If you don’t have any paid job and you sit down there joining them to believe business is not for everybody, I pray you don’t get depressed everyday.. If we all have people to be paying us, who has time for whala in business. But in the absence of none.. It becomes the next thing to do. Employing yourself. I laugh when people mock about the noise of self employment when the same people have nothing to offer you. As long as there is an increasing decimal in unemployment statistics, the ceaseless noise about youths doing something for themselves will not stop. An Idle hand is a devil’s workshop. The reality of today world is even making everyone a part time entrepreneur even as Salary earner because of increasing bills. The point is that some people will never pass Job Interviews or scale aptitude tests… Lol. No be curse o. No be all of us head carry book like that now… Some just struggle commot school. But it doesn’t mean they can’t do well in running their businesses.. Entrepreneurship is tough, yes. But some people will still do well in it, because of innate charm that God deposited in them. Sometimes business successes is about individuality not about belief and perception. You can never know if it is meant for you or not until you try. If you have not gotten a job, employ yourself o. Not all of us will work in offices, but all of us can make money. I live among local folks, mostly farmers and Artisans, and many never stopped putting water storex in their house. And I’m always like Oga o, awon people ma n rowo ke.. Next week you will see them, buying new Okada. Another one small car.. And they don’t have any certificate or CV.. Lol Then I realize, you can earn without CV if your CV is being thrown away. It will be hard at first, but one can do it. One man told me, sometimes I had to close eyes to my papers and search for skills. With good skills, you can feed yourself. Nothing is overrated about Entrepreneurship noise in Nigeria. The environment is too scary.. Nothing is assured. But still Small businesses still hold Nigerian Economy spell bound. Everyone keeps trying something. I remembered while going to farm back then as a young boy and my laps will mistakenly touch parts of this leaf, when on short trousers, the flaring up in stinging is often undescribable. Smile. No wonder the Yoruba Elders say “Ewe Esinsin ki jo omo lemeji” (The Stinging leave doesn’t sting a child twice, because he or she will be looking for it not to repeat its action) Beyond inflicting pain, there are surprising scientific researches backed up by facts that stinging nettle possesses an anti stinging or itching properties and as such it is an effective treatment for rashes, serious body itching, hives, redness on body, arthritis, swelling, cramps, allergic reactions and many more. Biologically called Urtica Dioca , – there are more than 50 species of nettle worldwide, and many are harvested for food or medicine. This medicinal plant is often overlooked and mistaken for a weed. Young shoots are a great source of vitamins and minerals. Use blanched in salads, in tea and boiled as a vegetable. Good source of iron. History Beneficial uses for stinging nettle date to ancient times. Before its medicinal use, extracts of the plant were used for fabric weaving as early as the Bronze Age. Nettle fibers were used to make paper. Similarly, this plant has long been consumed as food. Leaves, especially young ones, may be cooked (never eaten raw to avoid irritation) and eaten as a fresh leaf, a soup additive or in tea, beer and wine. Nettle is a source of iron and other minerals, vitamin C, carotenoids and essential amino and fatty acids. Nettle leaves and stems are covered with sharp spines that sting when touched. Individuals wishing to handle nettle plants for cooking must take care to avoid direct skin contact by wearing protective gloves and long sleeves. The sting is caused by histamine, small amounts of formic acid and other compounds. These are deactivated when the plant is dried or cooked. So, it is advised to only eat or take dried or cooked one. Here are beneficial ways that Nettles can help take care of your health in a natural way. The anti-inflammatory compounds within nettle has shown promise for helping with osteoarthritis, gout, and, forms of body itching, joint pain caused by inflammation. Many studies showed that applying a stinging nettle cream to an area of the body affected by osteoarthritis was significantly more effective than the placebo. Nettle also can also work fine against inflammation and pain when taken internally. A supplement containing nettle, fish oil, and vitamin E significantly reduced arthritis pain, and participants felt like they could reduce their dosages of pain relievers. Usage Making a nettle tea is simple. Collect the fresh leaves as many as you want, sun dry and dried to powder. You can brew one tablespoon of this dry leaf to one cup of steaming water for at least twenty minutes. The tea can be sweetened as you wish. Prepared Nettles can also be added to pap. It works so fine. Note: Never take it fresh and don’t use with OTC – Over the counter drugs especially antihistamine drugs, like piritin etc. A pregnancy woman should also avoid this. You can also watch this video on how to prepare your nettles and read more here https://naijalocals.com.ng/ewe-esinsin-stinging-nettles-the-powerful-anti-itch-herb/

okpalaAnambra:Wow.. Well it depends.. But security is so important. |
Houses are no doubt one of the basic necessities of life, just like food and clothing. One who has gotten a house to stay put and cover over his or her head, has succeeded in fighting homelessness. Everyone needs a home, whether on rentage for years or for days, or even as owner, as a lifetime property. A home is a shelter, an habitat where everyone dwells at one point or the other, and because of movement and migration of people from one place to another, for businesses, ceremony, Education etc, renting has become one service that almost every one will always subscribe to. So, if you are considering, renting a home possibly because you just moved to a new city for work, businesses or education, here are five key things you should consider before agreeing to pay for that rent. 1. Environmental Needs : A popular environmental quote says “If you think the economy is more important than the environment, try holding your breath while counting your money.” — Guy McPherson, School of Natural Resources, University of Arizona The above clearly shows that as much as the economy is important, friendly environment that satisfies your personal needs is more important, especially when they affect your total wellbeing, business or life generally. While growing up, our neighborhood was always lively, with constant electricity but there was one big problem, noise. There were sawmills around that were almost working round the clock and ended up giving people sleepless nights, so in the end, they made every available good sides almost irrelevant for many, so people started relocating to a new area, especially when there were sudden rise in their influence. As small as noise may be, some hate it like Mad, especially when you have gone for days, hoping to get home and sleep, only to be welcomed by noises from religious centres, clubs, and factories generators. It can be excruciatingly annoying. Apart from noise being a disturbance for your sound sleep, it can also cause distraction for studying. There are also many other environmental needs, that one should seriously consider when deciding to rent a house. As a one time facility manager, I was showing a guy a spacious nice self contain room one day, telling him, how he will enjoy the tiled floor, the kitchen, the toilet facilities and constant electricity. Then I noticed he was just pressing phone, moving to every corner of the house. It later occurred to me that he was only actually looking for Internet networks or services to see if the room has one. After watching him for like 2minutes, he raised his head up and smiled. He said, Egbon I like the room, it has all internet services. I do most of my stuff online and I can cope with everything else including erratic power supply because I have a generator but without internet, It will be hell of a home for me. Then we both smiled.. I understand. This is an example of personal special need that is important for different individual. Don’t just assume.. I have lived in a house during my masters day, that I had to go out every time to access internet. As a student, you can imagine how unbearable that would be for anyone. That the landlord or Agent feels a house is just perfect or manageable, because someone like you just used and enjoyed the home may not be same experience for you.. Some people hate heat, and they only got to know that there is no single fresh air from anywhere to get into their room, once electricity is off, because buildings are almost everywhere, yet they didn’t think of that from onset. So when next you want to rent that house, consider your personal needs that the environment has to offer. 2. Basic Facilities: A friend rented a room in a town, only to discover that there are thousands of naira of unpaid electricity bills from the last occupant and for months, he was incessantly being harassed by NEPA staff until he placed pressure on the landlord to clear the bill. The truth is that there are many things you may not know about your new house on inspection. But, to avert this, do your due diligence, either by asking tenants around the area. They may have useful information that can tell you if you are getting a good service for your rent. Many people are often desperate to get a place as soon as possible, because of time constraints from main engagement probably due to busy work schedule or academic rigour that leaves little or no time to pay attention to details, hence they jump up as soon they see house for rent or vacant room available. Be sure the rent has facilities you need before paying, it’s important. 3. Mobility & Proximity: My experience while leaving in Lagos has revealed that more than an anything else, proximity to workplace, school, personal business shop or office, market and place of worship are far more important when considering a rent than the actual rent cost. If your work place is at Sabo Yaba and your Church is at Adekunle, paying for house rent around Unilag side, Onike-Iwaya, Ebute-Metta is lot sense-making , even with higher cost than going to get a cheap place at Oworonshoki or Oshodi, because of obvious traffic problems that is now part of Lagos life. Again, how close the house is to the main road or easy of movement is also part of proximity that one should consider. I have seen a house that is located far-far inside an area that it will take you 10 mins to get to a major junction on bike. And if you will have to trek, it will take you far more – like 30mins. So, it doesn’t make sense if ease of mobility is a problem and you have to rent a house where you labor hard to move around. This should seriously be considered. 4. Financial Stability: Affordability of the cost of rent, shouldn’t just be based on your present financial capabilities, rather on abilities to continue to pay such fee. Research has shown that many people often have problems to pay the next rent after first, because of little financial strength. When they want to rent a new place, and they say the rent is 300k for example, they would run here and there, but once the time of renewal comes, problem arises. Before you take that new home, be double sure that it isn’t out of your means. One good useful approach that it is generally advised and which many principled salary earners apply is that your 2-3months salaries in a year should be able to pay your rent comfortably. Going beyond that is overkilling. If you are earning N100,000 in Lagos, your annual rent shouldn’t be more than N300,000 (3months salary). Look before you reap, especially if your finance is not stable and ofcourse because of unforseen circumstances that may eat your savings. It happens. Be wise. 5. Security: One last very important factor to consider when deciding a rent of choice is security. A house should give you protection and be safe to live in. Getting an unsecured apartment is like careless exposure of lives and properties to danger. A student once unknowingly rented a newly built self-contain apartment in choice place in a town because she’s looking for comfort only to discover that her most of co-tenants are Internet scammers disguising as students, and they commit lots of atrocities like forcing to sleep with innocent girls, smoking Indian hemp heavily and stealing of other people’s items when they are broke. Then SARS officials started parading the house. Friends were scared of visiting her because the house as they say in street slang has been “casted” or bookmarked. She ended forfeiting her paid rent for peace and security, by looking for a new place, conducive for learning. When you want to rent a place, be bothered about who you want to be living with. It matters a lot. Be security conscious. I hope you learn something https://naijalocals.com.ng/5-key-factors-you-should-consider-before-renting-a-house/

Ayatse was elected on Tuesday, 20 December 2016 and crowned on 4 March 2017 by the Kingmakers of his subjects after a meeting of the Tiv Supreme Council known as Ijir Tamen, held at the chambers of the Tiv Traditional Council at Gboko – a town recognized as the Traditional Headquarters of the Tiv people who are believed to be the 4th largest ethnic group in Nigeria.[3][2] [4]Prior to becoming Tor Tiv V, Ayatse, a famed academic became a professor of Biochemistry in his late thirties and would later serve as the Vice Chancellor in two separate Federal universities between 2001 – 2006 and 2011 – 2016 respectively, making him only the first Tiv man to do so. As Tor Tiv V, Ayatse is also the first Tiv man to ever rule his subjects as a Professor. In contrast with his predecessors who took Oath of Office for the Tor Tiv Throne swearing by the ancestral “Swem”, Ayatse swore by the Christian Bible, becoming the first Tor Tiv to take Oath of Office using the Bible. President Mohammadu Buhari congratulated the Monarch, stating that Prof. Ayatse’s emergence as the paramount ruler of the Tiv people, is an affirmation of his strength of character, integrity, and moral authority, garnered over the years as a lecturer, erudite scholar and administrator. His Royal Highness, James Ayatse was born to Late Iorzua Ayatse and Mrs Adeior Iorzua (Nee Achaa, Mbarumun, Nanev) in Mbakaan, Shangev-Ya, Kwande Local Government Area in the North-East province of Benue State. He received elementary schooling at LGEA School, Orbiam, Ikov, Ushongo Local Government Area and later, LGEA School, Mbagbegba, Shangev-Ya and St Anne’s Primary School Adikpo where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. HRH James Ayatse then proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry, distinguishing himself academically as the best graduating student of his department. He went on to obtain his Masters of Science at the University of Calabar, repeating the same feat of graduating as the best student of the department before moving to the University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom as a commonwealth student for further studies that culminated in a doctorate in Biochemistry. The Tor Tiv then returned to one of his alma-maters – the University of Calabar for his MBA and rose to become a Professor of Biochemistry, making him the first and only Tiv man to achieve this feat, a record that is yet to be matched. HRH James Ayatse started his career in 1980 as a graduate assistant in the University of Calabar and progressed rapidly and steadily to attain the rank of a Professor of Biochemistry in 1993, aged only 37. His career spans teaching to education management. He has taught at the University of Calabar, University of Uyo, Benue State University, Makurdi, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, University of Abuja and the Federal university, Dutisn-Ma. He has taught Biochemistry, Business Managementand Public Administration to different groups of students and has bred several B.Sc., M.Sc., MBA, MPA and PhD holders in an over 35 year working career. Because of his multidisciplinary teaching career, the Paramount Ruler was dubbed a “controversial Professor” in reference to his versatility, especially during his time at the Benue State University and the University of Agriculture, Makurdi where he worked concurrently. Additionally, Ayatse has served as External Assessor for Professional appointments/Promotions and External Examiner to a large number of Universities; he chaired the National Universities Committees on performance indicators and minimum benchmark for science programmes in Nigerian Universities. He also chaired several panels for the accreditation of science programmes in Nigerian Universities. He served in the capacity of Chairman or member of several communities or governing boards at international, national and state levels. In the year 2001, Professor James Ayatse was appointed the Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi succeeding Prof. Erastus Gyang. Reflecting on this in an interview preceding his emergence as Tor Tiv V, Ayatse stated that he inherited a student population of about 2000 and fluctuating cases of violent students’ demonstrations as well as staff union strikes, all of which he helped resolved amicably as the Vice Chancellor of the School. This earned him the reputation as the most peace loving Vice Chancellor of the Institution as there was no student demonstrations arising from internal problems throughout his tenure. He expanded the University by establishing several new departments and colleges that yielded students’ population of about 7000 before the end of his five-year tenure as the Vice Chancellor.[3] In 2011, Professor James Ayatse was appointed as the Pioneer Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma – one of the nine newly established Federal Universities by President Goodluck Jonathan’s Administration. Ayatse went on to become the 1st Vice Chancellor out of the nine Federal Universities established at the time to graduate students and Mobilize them for Mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He also conducted the first ever convocation of the University before completing his 5-year tenure. He laid the foundation for an ICT-driven University with computerized and online services, prompting Webometrics to rate the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma as the 14th Best University in January 2015 and 2016 ahead of many older universities in Nigeria. After successful tenure of office as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Prof. James Ayatse was elected on Tuesday, 20 December 2016 in a keen contest with three other contenders. He noticed the similarities in ways in which African Americans in Louisiana sing songs and Africans in Dahomey. Also, the importance and employment of music in cardinal events in the lives of Africans and those in diaspora is a theme prevalent in many of his research efforts. The truth is that I did not meet the town in good shape, in terms of development. My father was on the throne for 15 years but he could not do much because he spent 10 out of the 15 years on sick bed. This is a challenge to me to ensure that the lost grounds are recovered. I guess you saw a mast outside to facilate reception. I have also built our secondary school. Already we have eight standard classrooms and one hall which is under construction. There are a principal, teachers and non-teaching staff in the school. Our primary school, opposite the palace, has also just been rehabilitated by the effort of Honourable Segun Odebunmi. We also have N10 million ultra modern Central Mosque built by an illustrious son, Alhaji Isiaka Hamzat. I have also built 20 lock up shops to boost commercial activities. Apart from that, I have instituted an interest-free credit facility to our women. This is an empowerment of sorts to ensure that their welfare improves. The women have formed a cooperative through which they access the loan. I can only advise them to make good use of the loan. In the area of security, I have also built a police station, which is going to be inaugurated when the Oyo State Police Command is ready.
