Former Chief of Staff to the Abia State Governor, Sir Mascot Uzor Kalu, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging to build a government that works for all Abians especially the underserved at the grassroots level.

In a declaration speech delivered with passion and conviction in Umuahia, Abia State on Saturday 25th October 2025, Kalu emphasized the need for a new era of governance anchored on unity, transparency, and grassroots empowerment. Reflecting on his decision not to contest the outcome of the 2023 gubernatorial election, Kalu said: “Though there were irregularities, I congratulated the winner because the people demanded change. I chose not to go to court, allowing the administration space to govern. But today, Abia deserves more progress, more inclusivity, and more truth in governance.”

Kalu, who described himself as a frontline candidate in 2023, noted that while some progress has been made under the current administration, the delivery has not matched the campaign promises made to the people

Outlining his agenda, the APC chieftain promised to lead a people-focused government rooted in equity, transparency, and economic development. His core pledges include:

-Full implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda at the grassroots

-Opening state government financial systems to public scrutiny

1Ensuring civil servants and pensioners are treated with dignity and paid promptly

-Creating job-driven economic programs, especially targeting Abia’s youth

-Strengthening local government autonomy by publishing and releasing LG allocations in full

-Sustaining and improving existing capital projects while launching human capacity development initiatives

Citing Abia’s staggering unemployment rate of over 62%—nearly double the national average—Kalu declared it was unacceptable for the state to ignore the urgency of economic revitalization.

“Our journey is not politics as usual. It is a call to restore empathy to leadership and give every Abian a reason to believe again,” he said.
Kalu invited party loyalists, progressives across political divides, and non-indigenes alike to join his campaign to reposition Abia under the APC.

He stressed that his movement transcends politics and is anchored on faith and resilience, quoting Saint Teresa of Avila:
“Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. God never changes. Whoever has God lacks nothing.”

The Progressive Mandate for Arochukwu-Ohafia has delivered a thundering verdict on the performance of Hon. Ibe Osonwa, the current member representing Arochukwu-Ohafia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

In a statement issued by its Coordinator, Mr. Kalu Idika, the group expressed deep disappointment over what it described as the most uninspiring, horrendous and disconnected representation the constituency has witnessed in recent times.

According to the group, Arochukwu-Ohafia has become voiceless and politically adrift under Osonwa’s watch, as his tenure has failed to attract meaningful development, visibility, or empowerment to the people he claims to represent.

The statement described Osonwa’s stay in the National Assembly as a period of silence, absence, and missed opportunities, adding that while other constituencies are enjoying active representation and developmental strides, Arochukwu-Ohafia remains abandoned and forgotten.

The Progressive Mandate maintained that the people will not reward failure in 2027, stressing that Ibe Osonwa’s disconnect from his constituents and lack of tangible achievements have made his reelection impossible.

"Our people deserve a leader who speaks for them, fights for them, and delivers results, not one who disappears into the comfort of Abuja while the constituency bleeds, then reappear in the last minute and commences damage control before campaign period, through attraction of projects... We are not daft and won't fall for such an outdated strategy,” the statement added.

Elder statesman and prominent businessman, Chief Nnanna Ukaegbu, has expressed strong support for Senator Orji Uzor Kalu following his recent declaration that he will spend five months in Abia State to ensure victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Bishop Silas Eke of Kingly People’s Assembly has said that the Church’s support for Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is rooted in the desire for good governance and continuity of development, not politics.

Speaking during a Sunday service in Umuahia, Bishop Eke stated that many prominent clerics, particularly from the Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, and Assemblies of God churches, openly support the former Abia governor and current senator because of his track record in leadership and performance.

He said clerics are required to speak truth to power and would not stand by while the Abia North zone is shortchanged by “unknown figures without meaningful contacts or experience to attract development.”

“Many of us have never met him before. Personally, I don’t have any relationship with him. But as clerics, we are called to speak truth to power. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu remains the best from Abia state, both as a governor and now as a senator. The Church must always be the conscience that tells the truth at all times,” Bishop Eke said.

Bishop Eke added that the Church’s endorsement is not a political statement but an acknowledgment of Kalu’s visible contributions to education, agriculture, youth empowerment, and infrastructure.

As governor between 1999 and 2007, Orji Uzor Kalu introduced free education policies, rehabilitated key roads across Abia, upgraded Abia State University, and established the Abia State Teaching Hospital in Aba. His administration also supported small and medium enterprises, stabilized the education sector, and enhanced the welfare of civil servants and judicial officers.

As senator representing Abia North since 2019, Kalu has executed numerous constituency projects, including rural road construction, school renovation, solar streetlight installations, and borehole projects across the five local government areas, and beyond. The Chairman and Publisher of The Sun Publishing Ltd., Barrister Neya Kalu, has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of 29-year-old Arise Television journalist, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was murdered in Abuja in the early hours of Monday.

In a condolence letter dated September 30 and addressed to the Chairman of ThisDay Media Group, parent company of Arise News Channel, Kalu described the incident as both tragic and disturbing.

She lamented the violent circumstances of Maduagwu’s death, noting that no one should be subjected to such cruelty, especially within the safety of their own home. Kalu urged that those responsible be brought to justice without delay.

Part of the letter read:

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I write to you regarding the tragic and untimely passing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, one of journalism's bright lights who was taken from us far too soon. At just 29 years old, Sommie had so much more to give to the profession she loved and served with such dedication.

“Her role as a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer at ARISE News Channel showcased not only her journalistic talent but also her commitment to informing and connecting with audiences across Nigeria and beyond.

“The violent circumstances of her death are deeply disturbing and underscore the serious security challenges facing our nation. No one should lose their life in such a senseless manner… We join ARISE News Channel in calling for a swift, thorough investigation and the prosecution of those responsible for this heinous crime.”


Kalu extended her condolences to the entire ThisDay and Arise TV family, as well as to Maduagwu’s parents, siblings, extended family, and friends, praying for strength and comfort for them in their grief.
