Goodafternoon everybody!!.....you all are doing a great job here. I have been an ardent follower of this thread for a while now. I can see a lot of aspirants in here and I'm glad to see that a lot of youths would like to partake in this noble profession called MEDICINE. BTW, I'm a 400 level student of medicine and surgery and I have a piece of advice for you aspirants. I would suggest u read this with a neutral mindset because this is the truth that many people won't tell you about medical school. I begin.......

1) getting into medical school in Nigeria is like getting a camel through a needle. It is very difficult and your chances of getting admitted for medicine and surgery is very low except u have connections or you are exceptionally intelligent with high scores in jamb and post ume or God just loves u dearly. U will have to read like u want to die. So many jambites write jamb for years because they are waiting for medicine admission.....u must do everything u can to stand out if you really wanna study medicine.

2). Getting admission into medicine is the easiest part of your journey. Your pre-med is your first challenge. You have to pass all your science courses before making it into the college of medicine. A lot of students get stuck here because of unseriousness. Being studious and being smart will pull you through. U mist work hard here if not, OYO. I remember staying awake most nyts after drinking nescafe with cold water and without milk just to stay awake. There was serious competition to crossover.....it was bloody.

3). The college of medicine is HELL.....trust me!!! Your first month there will be so easy but don't be deceived. You have to read for hours every night to cover your syllabus. Its really voluminous.....in your preclinical, you will spend 18 months studying 3 courses that others study for 4 years each =12years. So do the math! If you don't read enough, u will fail and your woes will start right there.

3). 3rd year is tedious. The 2nd MBBS is already knocking at the door. This is the most important exam u will write in your life because it determines if u will be a doctor or not. U have only 3 chances of writing this exam after which u are rusticated from the college of medicine. In my school, there are students here that have stayed in preclinical for 8 years. The 2nd MBBS is bloody....u have to read like maaaaad!!!! For example I slept for about 4 hours everyday. The other hours were for reading!

In essence, if u are not ready to study hard, don't even apply for medicine or else u will end up wasting 5 years of your life trying to pass 2nd MBBS. But if u are willing to work hard and sacrifice your time for study, then medical school is for you. There are also other hurdles to pass in clinicals oo....but this is all I know. During ours, only 1/3 of the class passed but everybody worked hard, u just need to stand out or get knocked out.....its a jungle in here. U can spend months inside school without having time to leave school premises.....it can get that bad.

Everybody in med school needs a relaxation factor to supress the whole stress.....just find yours. For some people its weed, church fellowship, food, sleep.......mine was girlssssss I had a lot of them to ease my tension when I needed them.

Finally, its God who guides u thru med school.....he's the supreme!!!

Getting into medical schools is the easy part.....the hard part is staying in medical school.

So before u fill medicine in your jamb form again, ask yourself if u can take the heat.......

what about accreditations? they've gone a long way into most of the immediate courses Ba since you said twas started last year?

Yh it happens when your Governor is a visionary Dr, they can set up a medical University in the state. They have NUC accreditation and for the MDCN, they got first visit in December and MDCN gave good reports. It's even on their site, they would be coming for follow up visit before clinical stage tho.

OAU? OAU is in Osun state na, ondo is far from Osun. It's University of Medical Sciences in Ondo state, set up Last year.

What exactly is the government doing to better health care in Nigeria? Rather they take expensive trips to see specialists abroad when we have ours. The money would have served better in upgrading the National Hospital in Abuja so Govt Officials can go for their check ups. Sighs for Nigeria.

Post Utme cancellation or whatsoever won't affect lasu's postutme, also whether or not putme is cancelled you would still need an application form to get admission to Lasu.
The putme form I am talking about is the application form, whether or not exam is cancelled the application form would be released still.
I hope you understand?

It's all up to you, you can choose to drop it all and take Jamb next year and chase it. You can also continue with physiology and go with DE and Utme after uni. The thing is what ever decision you chose, you have to think it through, think properly, what do you want?

Are you willing to do what it takes? Also you have to make sure whatever you choose you don't have regrets. Try jamb next year, no harm there but still take physiology serious, study it like you life depends on it. If med doesn't work out now you would need your good GPA in physiology to get admission for DE. Then again choice is yours

You will submit your stuff along with some other things when lasu releases their postutme form. DE doesn't write exam normally, so whether or not they cancel putme, it doesn't affect DE. Just keep ur eyes open for when Lasu putme form comes out then follow the instructions.

Chief, if other Universities do it the way it was done in Bowen, you would do all the science's. Physics, Chem, Biology, Maths, English (GST). You just has to take all 100 level courses seriously, I hope you heard what happened with Unilag that some students weren't allowed to cross over to College of Medicine. It happens in other schools too (the crossing over) in essence, when you get in take everything seriously. It's really painful to have being in medicine in 100l then be bumped to other courses because one is unable to cross over to College.

As regards the insurance scheme, I think its way overdue. Such schemes would save a lot of life and greatly improve our healthcare system. The fact is, I don't necessarily blame the doctors. Who is to say that the patient would pay after being treated?, What if the patient doesn't make it, who is gonna pay for the doctor's work, drugs, surgery, bed etc?

Even in the US, UK etc, you might be stabilize from dying by the hospital buh continued treatment won't happen unless your work covers health insurance, you are a part of a health insurance scheme or you're ready to pay cash. Hence, Dr. Gideon saying doctors down here are black devils in white coat and what not because they follow same(almost same) procedures doctors around the world follow is just TOTALLY WRONG!

True we can't do the care first even tho oath of hippocrates asks that, we Nigerians can be cunning, they will say, " you didn't save his life so what money do you wanna collect " or sentiment would creep in " can't you see we are mourning, soo heartless ". If we were to run treat first, oh boy hospitals would have closed down Tey Tey. We need a unified system like NHS, where people have accounts where they contribute to their healthcare future need. Also like I stated all the olowo's busy throwing around money and doing the whole publicity once in a year philanthropy can try donating to hospitals for maintenance of their wards, buying drugs etc.

Lol I ain't throwing blame tho, am just stating that there needs to be a system in place where healthcare is placed above money. If there is a system where every nigerian has health insurance then if the person has help issues rather than having the person making deposit here and there treatment can start spot on. I think that's what is used in UK not sure tho but corruption won't let it work.

Everyone been about how weird it is for a student of one of the premed. science courses to do other medical science courses as medical students do.
what about my school where a student of zoology does courses like anatomy, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, along side other zoology courses like histology, cytology, parasitology and the others.

I did all those, tho it was comparative animal anat and physiology, did Mcb, did bch, history, cytology, parasitology... But that doesn't make me ready for basic medical talkleSs of clinical

A lot of avoidable deaths Sir. I heard of an accident that happened to two persons while they drove home. One of them died immediately but the other was sustained with some bruises and few wounds. he had to be rushed to the police station to write a statement. perhaps, he was having an internal injury or something. no one knew. after writing the statement, right there in the station he just lamented of some internal pain in his chest and he slumped and died!

The honorable minister of State for labour who passed on two months ago with his family - wife and a son. his wife at least could have been saved but for our medics insensitivity or something. I don't know what to say. she was found alive and no check was conducted when rushed to the hospital, they only treated what they saw and while the treatment was on she died after 13hrs.
We not only need emergency too. we need people with character. Someone is dying and is being pleaded for, for the hospital's ambulance to be taken to the hospital that they were referred to and the doctors disagree saying he must first fuel the ambulance before use and besides, it's not a private hospital but a federal one.
Doctors bargaining of treatment prices before treatment when a patient is at the point of giving up! are we for money or to save lives. why should money be a requisite before offering treatment to patients? we don't only need medics with character but people with working senses. They should always try to check for internal bruises, cuts or disorders that could be lenti somewhat. God help Nigeria oo

Na so oh, my dad died too because when we got to hospital and his BP was checked (200 something) we were still kept waiting for another 3 hours, they were telling us to buy oxygen, vasopressin etc. That's how He died hours later, so many others. If only emergency medical service had been applied maybe he may be alive or maybe not, would have been worth a try.
Apart from govt, nothing stops individuals from donating to help build wards and stock up their drugs. Then again what do I know,
