Kaduna State Governor-elect, Malam Nasir el- Rufai, has vowed to probe the outgoing administration of Governor Mukhtar Ramallan Yero after finding he will be inheriting depleted state reserves. Ek-Rufai,speaking on Tuesday shortly after receiving the report of the All Progressives Congress Transition Committee in Kaduna said he wouldn’t shield anybody working for the previous administration from probe, including the governor, after taking over government in May 29. El-Rufai said money stolen from the state’s treasury would be accounted for by the outgoing government of Yero. The former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said the Peoples Democratic Party in the state has mismanaged every aspect of Kaduna welfare. The governor-elect told the Punch, “This report is the beginning we are trying to understand the government and see what has been left behind and we will see some more. “I have said this and I will say it again; no one will take away the resources of this state without consequences. “We are not going to let it happen. There would be full accountability for every penny that accrue to this state and any one that has taken the money for this state will he asked politely to return it and if he doesn’t, we will take actions that are not necessarily polite. “I am determined to do this. This state has gone through trauma. Development has suffered. Resources have not been applied efficiently and effectively and we are not going to draw a line and say the past is the past. The past will be the future.” El-Rufai said results at the just concluded elections proves that no sitting government in Nigeria can rule forever. The governor-elect asked to be judged while in office as from May 29, saying the people of the state have the right to vote him out in 2019 if he fails to performance. He said, “Here in Kaduna, my partner and I (Deputy Governor-elect) will work as hard as we can to deliver true development and progress in the lives of our people and if we fail in four years, we will be voted out and others will be voted in. So, it is a good thing and that is how it should be.” Meanwhile Chairman, APC Kaduna Transition Committee, Malam Balarabe Abbas-Lawal, while submitting the report to the governor-elect, said the out-going PDP administration in the state was un-cooperative. “Our report is unfortunately an interim report as critical information required by the various sub- committees have not been provided despite several informal and formal attempts to persuade the outgoing government to accede to our requests,” he said. The former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), won the April 11 Kaduna gubernatorial election by a landslide victory, pulling a total of 1,117,635 votes to defeat the incumbent governor and the Peoples Democratic candidate, Muhktar Yero, who scored 485,833 to come second. Mr El-Rufai won in 17 local government areas, while his PDP challenger clinched six local government areas. Enugu State governor, Sullivan Chime, has pleaded with those he may have offended in the course of his eight-year stay in office to forgive him The governor, according to Punch, made this plea on Sunday, May 24 at a thanksgiving mass at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu. Chime explained that it is inevitable for any serious government not to step on many toes but pleaded with those he may have offended to show understanding by forgiving him. “We cannot change the society without stepping on toes, every serious government must take necessary measures to correct the wrongs in the society, if not we will not have the new environment we are enjoying in Enugu today.” The governor said he was pleased that the people of the state recognised and appreciated the successes his administration achieved within the span of 8 years. He called on the people of the state to pray for the incoming administration of Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, his successor. Chime also asked them to brace up for challenges ahead citing, the dwindling allocations from the Federal Government as pointer to this. Meanwhile the Enugu state government has come under intense criticism after four priests from the Anglican church were allegedly beaten up on May 22, Friday, by members of the Enugu state task-force on housing corporation. Nigeria’s leading mobile operator MTN, has stated that it may shut down its services within the next 24 hours due to the unavailability of diesel to power its power base stations. Making this known via its Twitter handle, @MTNNG, the company hinted that the current diesel scarcity in most parts of Nigeria is hampering its ability to run its base stations effectively. According to Akinwale Goodluck, the company’s corporate services executive, MTN’s reserves of diesel is running low and if the company is unable to receive additional supply of the product within the next 24 hours, customers may experience poor services. The company further assured that it was doing its best to deliver uninterrupted service to its customers, it however apologised in advance for any outages or inconvenience that its customers may suffer. The Senate recently directed its committees on petroleum resources to commence investigations into the remote and immediate cause of the current fuel scarcity so as to bring reprieve to Nigerians. Two main contenders for the position of the Senate president emerged from the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday, May 23. After a two-day retreat for senators-elect there were reports that Bukola Saraki, the senator from Kwara state, received majority support from 35 APC senators, putting him ahead of the chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Ahmed Lawan, from Yobe state. governor, has reportedly stepped down for Lawan in exchange for being chosen as the deputy Senate president. While the party did not officially address journalists on the matter, in a communique at the end of the retreat two groups, “Like Mind Senators” and “Senate Unity Forum” individually addressed the reporters and announced their support for the two aspirants. The ‘Like Mind Senators’ who said they are 35 in number out of the 59 APC senators endorsed Saraki. The other 24 in the Senate Unity Forum expressed support for Lawan who is said to be supported by the APC national leader and former governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu. Dino Melaye, who talked to the journalists on behalf of the ‘Like Mind Senators’ showed to the media a document he said contained the signatures of 35 senators who have decided to endorse Saraki. His address came briefly after the ‘Senate Unity Forum’ also spoke with the press where it declared that Akume had stepped down for Lawan. Melaye said: “Of the 59 senators of the APC, 35 of us present here today hereby reaffirm our collective commitment and resolution to ensure that the candidature of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki as the Senate President of the 8th Assembly. ” The senator-elect added that the deputy to Saraki would come from the north-east, while no name was mentioned for the position as talks continue. On their own part, the Senate Unity Forum said they have agreed a joint ticket of Lawan and Akume. “We, the Senate Unity Forum, comprising of senators-elect from various states and zones of Nigeria, have met, held extensive discussions and resolved to support Senator Ahmad Lawan as Senate President and Senator George Akume as Deputy Senate President of the 8th Senate ,” the Group stated. If the APC cannot reach a consensus candidate, all the aspirants will run for the position of Senate President upon the inauguration of the senate in the first week of June. A candidate for the position needs a minimum of 55 votes to win – a simple majority of 109 senators. The APC has 63 senators while the PDP has 46. Meanwhile, the national leader of the party, Senator Bola Tinubu and other party leaders have said zoning will not be used in the choice of the leadership of the National Assembly. It should be noted that earlier the 64 ranking and newly-elected senators in support of Saraki had decided to toss their weight behind the ex-Kwara governor because they want a “Senate president who is not imposed by a godfather.” Source:-www.naij.com/445071-apc-divides-in-race-for-senate-presidency.html Cc:lalasticlala |
President Goodluck Jonathan and his vice, Namadi Sambo, were directed by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to declare their assets. Moreover, 29 governors, 42 ministers, 109 senators and 360 House or Representatives members were ordered to do the same, The Punch has obtained. The officials were said to have been given a 30-day deadline to return the completed Assets Declaration Forms. Kolade Omoyola, CCB acting secretary, last Tuesday noted that “political office holders to declare their assets on assumption and vacation of office in accordance with Paragraph II of the 5th Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended”. The Bureau representative also issued a warning that those who fail to declare their assets, as required by the law, “shall attract on conviction any or all of the following: (a) Removal from office (b) Disqualification from holding any public office, (c) Forfeiture to the state any property acquired in abuse of office or dishonesty”. It was gathered that only seven senators and 40 reps had submitted their forms so far. Tony Okocha, Rivers state official, said that Governor Rotimi Amaechi would soon submit the completed form: “The Governor Rotimi Amaechi that I know will submit his form to the Bureau very soon. He has no skeleton in his cupboard and has nothing to hide anywhere in Nigeria and anywhere in the world.” Jacob Edi, the special adviser to Kogi state Governor Idris Wada, said that the governor, and all the other political appointees in the state subject to the law had submitted the forms. Edo state governor Godswill Akpabio had submitted the form before he was sworn in, his aide provided. A representative of Oyo state governor said that Abiola Ajimobi “certainly will” declare his assets. It should be recalled that late Musa Yar’Adua is the only Nigerian president who has declared his assets. Muhammadu Buhari, the president-elect, also vowed to to openly declare assets and liabilities after taking over office . Meanwhile President Jonathan last year refused to make such a move. GEJ explained he had already done this while being deputy to Yar’Adua. He claimed in the course of the third presidential media chat: “The issue of public assets declaration is a matter of personal principle. That is the way I see it, and I don’t give a damn about it, even if you criticise me from heaven. When I was the vice-president, that matter came up, and I told the former President (late Musa Yar’Adua) that let’s not start something that would make us play into the hands of people and create an anomalous situation in the country. “The law is clear. A public officer should declare his assets, and if there are issues, then the relevant agencies would have a basis to assess whether you have amassed wealth or not. When it is said that people should declare their assets in public, it is not only the president or the vice-president; it includes everybody, including ministers. “When I was a governor in Bayelsa State for about a year before becoming vice-president, I was investigated thoroughly. I have nothing to hide. But because I was under somebody and it was becoming an issue, because of the media, and because my boss had declared, it was said that the vice-president must. I declared, not because I wanted to. “Initially, I said they can talk about it from morning to night, I will not. It is not proper. If one amends the law to say that only the president and the vice- president should declare assets publicly, fine. But, presently, everybody who is holding political office is expected to and I say it is not right.” In another development General Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), the former defence minister, yesterday advised Muhammadu Buhari to probe President Jonathan’s administration over the $60 billion debt the new administration will inherit. According to Daily Trust, Danjuma lamented: “It is disheartening to know that the incoming government of Buhari will have to contend with a debt of over $60billion and there is nothing to show for this huge debt. “Well, we would know what happened to these monies, because I believe that the Buhari administration has to, and should, in national interest, investigate the administration so that we would know what happened.” Source:-http://www.naij.com/445077-jonathan-given-30-day-deadline-for-assets-declaration.html Cc:lalasticlala |

Chief Bode George, the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has denied rumours making the rounds that he used the influence of his wife for the attack against senator-elect Buruji Kashamu. George, who was speaking from the United Kingdom on Saturday, May 23, 2015, described the accusation as a ‘huge joke.’ He said: “I don’t understand what this is all about. How does Kashamu’s arrest affect the price of milk? My wife is not the chairman of the NDLEA, so how can I give her orders when she has a boss? Also, that agency always follows due process. “I am happy that the NDLEA has issued a statement to the effect that Kashamu’s arrest has nothing to do with me or politics. I do not dabble into Ogun State politics. “Kashamu is like a younger brother to me and he is not known to speak in such a manner. I am sure it is his media adviser that concocted this falsehood .” It would be recalled that Buruji Kashamu’s media assistant had blamed Bode George for standing behind the onslaught against his boss, “in a bid to score cheap political points.” The residence of the Ogun state senator-elect was yesterday surrounded by the officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. There were reports that the drug enforcers are set to extradite Kashamu to the US to answer to drug offenses. Meanwhile, the NDLEA has come out to state that the siege on the home of the senator-elect is an extra-judicial action.
