Politics › Okonjo-iweala Warns Successor Of Difficult Times by missbehave247(op): 9:10pm On Jun 05, 2015 |
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former minister of finance, has warned her successor of a “tough year” . According to the ex-minister, anyone who assumes her former position will face a “difficult” year because of plunging oil revenues, The Nation reports. She stressed that the economy needs expert management to survive the difficulties. “We have a serious situation with a cash crunch”, she told Bloomberg in an interview in Cape Town at the World Economic Forum on Africa. “But fundamentally, the economy is strong. If we can get through the cash crunch, manage the way through, build on some of the assets we have, by next year, things will be better. "The next finance minister needs to focus on a strong policy, the fiscal consolidation path that we have and looking toward diversification of revenue resources. “We are all waiting for the new finance minister to be named. “Nigeria is full of talented people so they will find someone”, she added. She revealed that she plans to take a break until August and will then consider her career options. Okonjo-Iweala, a former managing director of the World Bank, was finance minister under Goodluck Jonathan from 2011. She recently said she has ‘no reason to fear’ President Buhari. President Muhammadu Buhari, who was sworn into office last week, is yet to appoint his cabinet. Politics › Buhari Set To Take One More Petroleum Position by missbehave247(op): 10:35am On Jun 05, 2015 |
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is set to take one more petroleum position.
Buhari plans to become the next President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), as the country still holds the seat, an official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said on June 4, Thursday, in Abuja.
The politician, who asked not to be named, said the exit of Diezani Alison-Madueke, ex-minister of petroleum resources, had nothing to do with the status of Nigeria as the President of the group.
The official said the post would be filled after the nomination of a new minister of petroleum by Buhari.
It is widely considered that the leader of the country will double as the Minister of Petroleum in a bid to rid the ministry of the massive corruption that has overwhelmed it.
The source said the ex-minister was elected at the 166th General Meeting of the OPEC, not in her own capacity but to introduce our country.
Diezani was elected the president of the international oil body on November 27, 2014 but commenced to occupy the office in January 2015.
The official added that the OPEC president is expected to serve for a period of one year and to chair over the meetings of the conference in the course of that presidency.
OPEC reportedly has Alternate President who exercises the responsibilities of the President during an absence, or when the current one is incapable to carry out the responsibilities.
There were reports that President Buhari is set to become Nigerian next minister of petroleum resources as he rather appoint himself than trust anyone else with the main source of Nigeria’s revenue.
