Given the economic reality, especially the rising foreign exchange rate, intending Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem or Rome may look the direction of Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre in Benue State for spiritual edification and enrichment. The 23- year-old religious site is fast emerging as Nigeria’s ‘New Jerusalem’ where thousands of pilgrims converge every August to celebrate the ‘special day of grace’. Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME ,who was at the centre’s 21st anniversary, reports.

The pain of travelling the seven-kilometre bad road from Ugbokolo in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State to Aokpe community did not deter the huge crowd of pilgrims to Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre.

Thousands of Christians, especially Catholic faithful, from various dioceses in the country and outside Nigeria, converged on the centre for four days (August 1-4) to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Our Lady of Aokpe Mediatrix of All Graces.

Some pilgrims defied the scorching sun and intermittent shower of rain to sit and pray in the open field around the Altar of Perpetual Adoration, Crucifix of Jesus and Good Shepherd Garden.

For the four days, the sleepy and serene Aokpe community was literarily overrun by pilgrims and tourists to the centre. Temporary souvenir and gifts shops dotted the road to the centre as traders displayed foods and gift items, such as rosary, candles, pendants, wall papers, religious cassettes and CDs, among others.

But, to get the centre is like a journey through the Biblical narrow path to heaven. No two big vehicles found it easy to move on the opposite direction on the rough road. And all vehicles moved on gear one all through the short but tedious journey. This created a brisk business for operators of commercial motor bikes (Okada) as most pilgrims patronised them, which is a popular and more convenient mode of transport from Ugbokolo to Aokpe. The 15- minute ride on a bike took a vehicle about 30 minutes to cover on a dry day.

To the pilgrims, the bad road is not only a challenge, but it is also part of the penance for the spiritual edification, enrichment and growth – the essence of their pilgrimage. From visitation to apparition room, praying the Rosary, making confessions and penance on penance concrete track leading to the crucifix of Christ, fetching of holy water from the spring fountain, reciting the glorious mysteries, participating in the Hour of Mercy and the Stations of the Cross, there was no dull moment for the pilgrims. It was marathon prayers, praise and worship sessions accompanied by spiritual talks and the three-hourly holy mass during which pilgrims made constant supplications and sacrifices to the Eternal Father for collective and individual needs.

On Monday, August 3, eight masses were conducted for the nation and the state, reconciliation, students, refugees and other internally displaced persons, peace, sponsors of Aokpe project and Holy Spirit. At the grand finale on Tuesday, August 4, the Most Rev Dr. Michael Apochi, Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, took charge of the mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary that lasted for three hours.

In his exhortation, Rector of the centre, Rev. Fr. Ejembi Vincent, said the spiritual and social challenges of Nigerians are enormous as ‘we are living at a time when immorality is gaining ground, insurgency, Boko Haram, youth unemployment and other economic crisis bedevil us.’

The visionary, Mrs Christiana Agbo Ejeh, a lawyer, said the Blessed Virgin Mary started appearing to her since 1992, when she was 12, and that Virgin Mary told her she would appear on August 4, 1994 to bestow grace on her children.

“Virgin Mary told me that every August 4 should be set aside to celebrate a special day of grace,” she said.

Chelsea’s Manager, Jose Mourinho, has urged John Obi Mikel to stay at the club as he is a likely candidate for the Blues’ captain armband once present skipper John Terry takes his exit.


The Super Eagles star has spent nine years with the blues since his controversial move from Norwegian side, Lyn Oslo, in 2006 and has since gone on to win two premier league titles 2009/2010, 2014/2015 season, four FA cup title 2006/2007, 2008/2009 2009/2010 and 2011/2012 seasons respectively, two league cup 2006/2007 and 2014/ 2015 season, one FA community shield 2009 season, one UEFA champions league 2011/2012 season, one UEFA Europa league 2012/2013 season. Mikel has 224 caps for his club adding four goals to his credit.




With 34-year-old Terry’s career with the London side winding down, it means the English champions will have to select a new skipper and Mourinho feels Obi – the team’s second longest serving player – may be accorded the honour of wearing the skipper’s armband.

“Mikel is, after Terry, the longest serving player at the club,” Mourinho told UK Daily Mail.

“I think (Cesc) Fabregas has personality for a captain too. Eden is coming with big status now and was voted one of the top 10 players in Europe last year.

“In my opinion he should be in the top three not in the top 10. Let’s see what is going to happen but we have these people. But let’s say John and Branislav are our captains and the others are ready to come,” he said.

Mikel recently ended speculation over his Chelsea future by insisting he is happy at Stamford Bridge. The 28-year-old was linked with the likes of Al Ain and Fenerbahce during the transfer window but decided to remain with the Blues till 2017 despite the interests.

Diego Costa killed his pet dog – by accidentally reversing over it in his car, reveals new biography



The 26-year-old Chelsea forward was devastated after the nasty incident which left him in an emotional slump for a month.



Chelsea striker Diego Costa was “totally depressed for a month” after he reversed over his pet Yorkshire Terrier and killed it.

The incident occurred during the Spain international’s time as an Atletico Madrid player between 2010 and 2014.

In an excerpt from a newly released official biography about the forward, Costa’s Atleti teammate Paulo Assuncao revealed the effect the dog’s death had on him.

“Diego brought his Yorkshire Terrier to Madrid but one day when he was parking and didn’t realise the dog was behind the car, he reversed over it,” said Assuncao.


“He was devastated, totally depressed for a month. When I asked him why he was so low he practically broke down.

“He said: ‘I can’t believe it. I killed my dog. He came out of the house to greet me and I didn’t see him and I ran over him.’”

Costa, 26, is a doubt for Chelsea’s Community Shield clash with Arsenal this weekend.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed who he believes was the second best player in the world last season – and it isn’t Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to Sky Sports, the Portuguese hailed Eden Hazard as having a better season than Ronaldo due to the role the Belgian played in steering the Blues to the Premier League crown, whereas Real Madrid’s star man tasted only individual success, rather than with his team.

Ronaldo, though, is the reigning world’s best football player having won the Ballon d’Or in January, raising questions over the integrity of Mourinho’s view.

Manchester United’s long-standing interest in Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller came to a head over the past week with reports in the German media suggesting the Old Trafford club had tabled a bid in the region of between £56-70million.

This bid was quickly rebuffed with Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stating that a deal to take the Bavarian born forward away his home-town club was impossible: ‘There are some players who just don’t have any price tag, we would be out of our minds to sell Muller.’

This comes as little surprise with United’s pursuit of Muller always set to be ill-fated with the forward an icon at the Munich club despite being just 25-years-old. Louis van Gaal was the coach who handed Muller his big break in Bavaria when he promoted him to the first-team within his first few months at the club however despite the strength of their relationship the bond between Muller and Bayern is far greater.

Manchester United’s reported offer for Muller would see the club break their transfer record again just one year after doing so for Angel Di Maria, whose own future at the club is still unclear. Van Gaal’s desire to strengthen his forward line following the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao has seen targets such as Muller and Pedro rise up his list of priorities
