European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: FG Bans DSTV From Airing English Premiership by mochafella(m): 6:21pm On Aug 07, 2006
Weird decision. DSTV is the wrong company to target. Afterall its the content provider that decided to offer exclusive rights for the whole continent together. Note that the content provider is not the same as DSTV.

Instead of going after DSTV, the NBC should be asking the content provider to offer rights to Nigeria's market separately from the rest of Africa. Of course the content provider will only respond if bidding for the Nigerian market is competitive between several broadcast companies otherwise it is cheaper to include Nigeria with the rest of the African market.

It is the "norm" in the broadcast industry to offer exclusive, bundled rights in "non-competitive" markets. I'm not sure if NBC spoke to the owners of the programs but they are simply going the easy route and using a bully pulpit to force the content provider's hand.

The rivalry in Spain between Real and Barca has more to do with political undertones than football, unlike Espanyol and Barca which is more of a football rivalry, Like Man U vs Arsenal which is a football rivalry (which was fueled more by the hatred of the two managers involved).

Thats why i could only describe what you are talking about as the El Classico as a match between Rangers which is a scotish team and Man U which is an English team, definately it might not be as classical as your El classico (besides the fact that Rangers and Man U only get to play each other if their paths cross in an European competition ) but like i said the Rivalry is more of a political nature played out on the football field, the Footie is secondary to the political undertones involved. But i guess i won't get any taker on this view so i will just concede this particular Arguement and Bow down to your El Classico ( OH!! please give me Man U vs Liverpool anyday!!)

@loyika
Your distinction btw a politically-driven and a football-driven rivalry misses the point. The fact remains that the rivalry is in evidence when both teams meet. If anything it is the political angle that makes the rivalry more consuming and thus bigger than a "purely" football-driven rivalry. Granted some fans prefer rivalries to exist solely within the confines of a stadium, but then having football as one facet of a larger rivalry does not subtract from the fierceness of the rivalry it only enhances it.

The allegation that the EPL is more hype is not so clear-cut, but El-classico is a bigger rivalry than ManU v Arsenal and it is only enhanced by the political angle, which is also not to the detriment of the football displayed.

Apparently its hard to figure out whether I like a guy. At a recent outing with a bunch of people, Oye was there. I caught him watching me a couple times. I know the ladies on here know what its like to realize that a guy is using every opportunity he can without being to obvious to stand next to you in a group etc, Also, when the people who I came with were ready to leave he mad a big deal about us staying saying that things woudn't be the same if we left etc, Finally, he insisted on giving me a ride home even though my ride lives down the street from me. The conversation in the car was cool but I was really nervous.

So, after reading that long ass essay, lol, here is my question. This guy has been single for 6 months but he hasn't made a move. No can I call you, would you like to go out, nothing. From what I heard, he hasn't asked anyone else out either.
My guess is he's unsure of your reaction, especially with that nervous car ride. He didn't have to give u a ride, he probably sensed some discomfort and shut it all down. Remember he's coming off a broken engagement. I'd say flirt a little more and see what happens.

A. The real madrid vs Barca classico as you call it has more to do with politics than football, as barca represents the Basque region of spain who want to leave the mother land, and real is the club of the capital, this was further fanned by Franco's support for R Madrid with government funds, so apart from the wonderful players that play for both teams, the rivalry is more political than football!!

@loyika
um, looks like you just reinforced Teeroy's point that Madrid v Barcelona is a bigger, deeper-lying rivalry than ManU v Arsenal.

One more thing Barca is a Catalan club, same with Espanyol with whom they also have a fierce rivalry. I beleive its Athletic Bilbao that represents the secessionist Basque region.

bros calling nottm forest better than arsenal is innacurate,

arsenal won the european cup when it was known as the faire's cup plus cup winner's cup in 1996, which is more than notts has won.

Not so, almost nothing in those statements is accurate. Nottingham Forest has a better record trophywise. They won the Champions League when it was known as the European Cup twice back to back in '79 and '80.

Arsenal has not won the European Cup, they got to their 1st ever final last year. They won the Uefa Cup in '70. I'm sure you know that competition is lesser than the European Cup. Afterall UEFA merged the Cup winners Cup with it in '99 and regularly changes the format to make it more interesting. Also Arsenal won the Cup Winner's Cup in '94 not '96.

Frankly equating a Uefa Cup and a Cup Winners Cup win to back-to-back European Cup wins is wrong.
