You're right and you're smart. This happens not only in BF/GF relationships, but in marriages too. Most grown-ass men run-away from intelligent and independent ladies because of insecurities and inferiority complex. They don't want someone who would challenge them. All they want it a lowbudget woman with an IQ which could be taken advantage of.
Although, it isn't bad for the sake of the ego of a man to marry someone you're above in financial capability, experience and intelligence, it's only wrong when it's done for the wrong reason - because of inferiority complex and not wanting to have someone who could challenge your intelligence.

They would discover that dumb slay queens have more surprises than independent women. It's better to marry an independent, intelligent Chimamanda, than marry a dumb slay queen.
