Politics › Re: Nigeria Youths Are Not Prepared For Leadership by ModiKen(m): 2:15pm On Oct 14, 2015 |
TonyeBarcanista: Buhari ministerial list contains names of yesteryears politicians, some of them woefully failed in their previous office. While some of us are not happy with the recycling, the question I beg to ask is "Are the youths prepared for leadership?".
The Attitude of Nigeria Youth: I understand that the youths of Nigeria like their African counterpart are seriously challenged economically. I understand that we are faced with the thought of "when are we taking over?" But looking at the nigerian youth, you will see one that is ready to stake his life and intellect to butt-lick and defend failed politicians with hope that the 'politicians' enroll them into their payroll and/or make them unofficial PA. The youths are scattered on social media from twitter, facebook, Nairaland etc and even on the street with readiness to be eternal stooge for politicians. Is it not a Nigerian youth that carries placard in protest against prosecutors and to show support to politicians that have been indicted for crimes? Which other part of the world can one find such?
Our Youths Have No Zeal To Lead: The youths keep saying 'give us a chance' but have they shown willingness and zeal to lead? How many of our youths are members of political parties? How many are thinking of picking party forms to vie for political offices? The minimum age to run for Local government chairman, Federal House of Representatives and State House of Assembly offices is 30, For Senate and Office of the Governor, the minimum age is 35. How many of our 30-40years old have shown the zeal and passion to run for these offices? How many have shown the zeal to run for their Local Government Chairmanship elections? How many youths within the 25 and 35 age bracket are passionate about representing their wards as councillors? How then can there be power shift when there is no zeal to lead? Does power come on a platter of gold?
May I remind the youths that Bola Tinubu first ran for Senate(and won) at the age of 40? Rabiu Kwankwaso was first elected Member/Deputy Speaker of House of Representative in 1992 at the age of 36. Ayo Fayose was 43years when he ran for Governor against an incumbent and PDP elite in 2003. At 37, Owelle Rochas Okorocha first ran for Governor of Imo state in 1999(he lost). At 41 he vied for the Presidency in 2003(he lost). He was however appointed Special Adviser to President Obasanjo. At 35 Musliu Obanikoro was the NRC Caretaker Chairman for Surulere Local Government. All these men started WITHOUT a godfather. They however showed the zeal to lead, today they are moving from one office to another.
Our Youths Must Wake Up: Leadership comes with responsibilities. I am not a fan of 'gifting' people with political offices, but instead I believe in supporting young visionaries for political offices. For young people to lead, they have to join/support political parties of choice. They must intelligently contribute to party growth, show willingness and readiness to lead, and pick forms for elective offices. Don't be discouraged whether you win or lose the election because the zeal will prepare and position you for other positions (appointments) that usually comes AFTER every election. If appointment didn't come, the next for years will definitely provide another opportunity to vie for elective/appointive position. Who says a youth cannot be the a national officer of his party(apart from youth leader)?
Finally, leadership is not a gift, it must be earned. If the youths really want generational shift, they must show willingness to lead. As at now, the youths are just not prepared for leadership.
May God Bless Us All Tonye, I must commend you on this writeup. Though we are of different political ideologies and parties but you could read my mind on this issue of our youths not being ready for leadership. It is quite sad that most youths today only care about "social media"; facebook, instagram, twitter et al. Most are just online to complain about our leaders or to support them (for reasons they may not even be able to explain). Taking the bull by the horn is what our youths ought to be doing; if we the young ones begin giving the older and more established politicians a run for their money at elections, things would begin changing and we can boldly claim we are the leaders of tomorrow. I am not 30 yet but I have been chewing on the thought of running for a political office at my local government or state and your writeup has been an extra motivation for me. I would be joining a political party once I step in naija and I would pick a form for a legislative position at my local government or state come next election in 2019. Hope to see you at the top man when we begin making impact on the lives of Nigerians. |

magicminister: Hmmm
I will take green card
If I get a green card to u.s. and I am allowed to enjoy the benefits american citizens enjoy, I can make back that 20 million and even more within 2 years after acquiring a college degree from u.s.....
Looking at things from another angle, 20 million naira is less than 200 thousand dollars and the average folks in u.s. go homr with about 50-80k dollars after tax. The smarter choice would be the green card. The easier choice is 20 million.
Disclaimer I have been greatly criticized for my choice by some people that think it makes no sense so I feel the need to tell you guys a real life story. My hitherto unemployed friend whom we fondly called fabulous won the us visa lottery about 2 years ago. Now he is in the united states. He works in walmart or one of the huge stores. He now owns his own home (three bed room apartment) and recently bought a brand new car. He is currently pursuing a part time degree in a university and at same time working his walmart shift. He enjoys the best healthcare, best gyms, 24/7 light and good roads. That alone will add another 5 years to his life and that is worth more than 20 milla looool
Currently, his wage is below the average income in the united states because he has no tetiary education u.s. and the nigerian degeee is not regarded. He is working hard towards attaining a degree in accounting.
Even with 20million, he cannot enjoy such opportunities in Nigeria.
P.s. 20million cannot buy you a u.s. greencard like some people are insinuating
20 million is huge to some extent but it cannot buy you a house in ikeja or lekki phase1 or v.g.c. or ikoyi.
20 million cannot launch you a large scale business nor cannot it let you into the oil downstream sector.
Keep that at the back of your mind.
Do you ever wonder why most folks that cross over dont wanna come back?? Most folks abroad don't wanna come back home cos the country is a mess at the moment. 90% of Nigerians abroad would return back if Nigeria becomes half as developed as a western country. Most of them miss home; they miss their families and loved ones at home and would love to be close to them. Or haven't u heard there is no place like home? |

This is the 21st century but Nigeria is still thinking with her anus! You are the one thinking with your anus! Is it a country that can't boast of 24/7 electricity, a country battling insecurity and insurgency, a country where corruption is like the air we breath,a country with no current plan on how to move the nation forward cos our president is yet to appoint ministers; that you expect to host an event such as the world cup? With the insecurity and terrorism going on in north east Nigeria, which right thinking organisation would give us the right to host an event as big as the world cup. Do you know the number and amount of natural and human resources we are blessed with? Dude get your head our if ur a$$!!! |

Dolemite: How ironic, the major reason why Nigerians are poor is because we depend on a god to solve all our problems, if you want this country to work get off your knees and put your hands to work!!! stop praying to a white god that isn't there... Bless u sis. This is the problem I have with most Nigerians. If its not "May God help us", it would be "May God deliver this country" or some dumb shi.t. Its either we are calling on Jesus or Allah to solve our problems, when the solution to our problems is right before our eyes. Just take for example the high number of graduates sitting at home doing nothing but praying for God to send them jobs instead of going out to learn a skill. No wonder a Nigerian-American Professor (can't remember his name at the moment) said "60% of Nigerian youths are ignorant". BTW, this guy, Paul, that is losing hope in Nigeria, what has he done to make the country better? Nobody should tell me about the music he and his brother are singing cos they are doing it for their own pockets. Instead of making moves (in his own small way) to make his country better, him and his brother are buying houses in the U.S waiting for God to perform a miracle in his country. Smh I hate it when people who ought to be role models make dumb comments |

I loved the arts but my mum saw it as a waste of time and Dad wanted me to study science. I never liked Maths, Physics or Chemistry but I did as they commanded. Wrote WAEC, failed all science subjects....still managed to get five credits. Wrote JAMB to get admitted to study Economics or Accounting so I could make my dad happy cos he worked in the Banking sector, but I failed woefully. After staying at home for a while, I decided to pick a social science course (cos I added Government to my WAEC instead of Geography) and I passed JAMB immediately. Ended up being in the top three in my class. Today I'm working while studying for my Ph.D in same course I was admitted for my undergrad. My younger brother was different as he is more strong-headed than me and he defied my dad's wish; went ahead to study social science striaght from S.S.1. Went on to be the best in the social science class in his secondary school as well as his department in University. My dad hasn't forgiven him till date for his defiance. I have sworn that my kids would never experience what I went through, education wise. They would focus on what they are good at and what they love with the proper guidiance from me and my wife. |
