http://www.tribune.com.ng/14082009/news/news5.html PDP, Mark slam Clinton over comments on Nigerian leadership - Clinton unfair to EFCC - Waku By Leon Usigbe and Shola Adekola - 14.08.2009 The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as the Senate President, David Mark, on Thursday, lambasted the United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton over her remarks during her visit to the country in which she suggested that there was failure of leadership in Nigeria as a result of corruption and bad governance. In voicing its disappointment with the top US diplomat, the PDP said in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, that her statement did not reflect the realities on ground in the country. It said while the party welcomed her visit to Nigeria as a further expression of the age-long strong cordial diplomatic relations between both countries, it was “at the same time concerned that some of her remarks are not only way off the mark, but also based on misinformation.” According to the statement, “her sweeping statements on what she calls a ‘failure of leadership’ does not correspond with the reality of present day Nigeria, where a committed leadership operating within the realm of the rule of law holds sway.” The party pointed out that the present administration “inherited a lot of challenges that were entrenched in the body polity for a long time,” saying that since assumption of office, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had demonstrated “a rare, but firm commitment to right the wrongs of the past, using constitutional instruments in order to strengthen democratic governance in the country.” ![]() Senator Mark, in his reaction yesterday, said it was only Nigeria that can decide what form of democracy it wanted. Speaking at the Presidential Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Mark insisted that just as other countries of the world decided their own form of democracy, Nigeria has the right to do same. On the issues raised by Clinton on Nigeria’s efforts at strengthening democratic institutions through the reforms to fight corruption which she said was not firm enough, Mark replied: "What is wrong with the electoral system? What is the problem with it? You see people just criticize because they want to do so.‘’There is nothing in the electoral act that allows people to go and take ballot boxes and run away with it.Rather than face the real issues by functionally educating the people, we are just beaten about the bush.’’ Outspoken National Vice Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Senator Joseph Waku, has described the statement credited to the United States Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton, that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has “fallen off,” Waku, in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, said Mrs. Clinton’s undiplomatic attack on the EFCC showed “she’s either briefed on the facts on ground by a partisan adviser or she has her own bias against the present leadership of the commission” According to the statement, “I have chosen to respond to Mrs. Clinton’s comment because I believe she made an avoidable error by singling out the EFCC out of all agencies of government in Nigeria to attack when there was obviously no need for it. It is either she has been wrongly briefed by her embassy staff in Nigeria or she is a victim of the propaganda mounted by some elements who either lost out in the commission or are being prosecuted by it at the moment.” “I have read with dismay that the same EFCC Mrs. Clinton said has fallen off, has in the last one year, secured over 65 convictions and recovered funds above N50 billion, with over 400 cases in courts. I have also heard that the present EFCC chairman inherited about 11 cases of politically exposed persons (PEPs), but today, she has taken more than 40 PEP cases to court. If this is the fact on ground, how did Mrs. Clinton arrive at her own conclusion?” he querried. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These guys are bloody comedians who will prefer marking their scripts themselves in an examination, or what do u think? |
http://www.tribune.com.ng/14082009/news/news11.html Former Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, stormed the Government House, Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, to debunk the recent allegation that he is at loggerheads with his successor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, over cabinet reshuffle. In a warm embrace with the governor, Tinubu said that nothing could bring dispute between him and Fashola, describing the report of the allegation as a naked lie and plan by the opposition party in the state to derail the present administration. “I want you to tell Lagos people to be sure that this unity is unbreakable; this common conviction, common focus for the good benefit of Lagos State and democratic Nigeria is unshakeable and indivisible. Anytime you hear such stories, throw them to the garbage,” he said. It will be recalled that a national newspaper (Not the Nigerian Tribune) reported that there was a frosty relationship between Tinubu and Fashola over cabinet reshuffle, on Monday. However, Tinubu described the allegation as rumour, adding, “the story is not true. It is a fabrication coming from the PDP the enemy of progress of the country. According to him; “this governor has been on a flying start and doing a marvelous job, unequal in the country and you have seen the transformation, radical development of Lagos State that is being effective and highly progressive.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER, NO Poverty Development Party can put Asunder. |

http://www.tribune.com.ng/12082009/news/news2.html FOLLOWING the defection of Governor Ikedi Ohakim of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the top hierarchy of the ruling party is said to be mounting pressure on the governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, to defect. Sources within the party told the Nigerian Tribune that the Presidency had given its blessing to the move to ensure the three governors join the party. The Abia State governor is a first-term governor, who will be seeking a second term election in 2011 but Oshiomhole and Mimiko will be due for re-election until 2012 and 2013 respectively. It was, however, learnt that the PDP is not leaving any stone unturned in seeking the defection of the duo, to ensure a stronger PDP in the 2011 elections. It was gathered that the party is seeking a clean sweep of the states of the South-South and South-East in the next general election. The PDP had lost Abia and Imo states in the last general election as a result of internal wranglings within its fold, but the governor of Imo State returned to the party on July 25, in a ceremony attended by President Umaru Yar’Adua. The loss of Edo State to Oshiomhole of the Action Congress (AC) late in 2008 was also attributed to the internal wrangling within the fold of the PDP in the state, following the internal feud orchestrated by the removal of Governor Oserhiemen Osunbor and the loyalists of Chief Tony Anenih. Since he assumed office in Benin, the PDP has been making overtures to the governor, with the leaders publicly declaring their support for the administration of the former labour leader. The rapport between the governor and the chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is said to have become deep to the extent that the governor was allowed to make concrete input in the nomination of the state’s representative on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Besides, the governor and PDP leaders have been talking about the necessity of his joining the PDP, which is said to have been fixed for the “appropriate time.” Some sources have also indicated that pressure has started mounting on Governor Mimiko to declare for the PDP, the party he left to seek the gubernatorial ticket on the ticket of Labour Party (LP). Sources stated that the topmost hierarchy of the PDP in Abuja believed that Mimiko would soon return to the party, once they were able to put some structures in place. It was also learnt that the governor had received concrete offers to return to the PDP, which he abandoned in 2006. For Governor Orji, the dilemma, according to sources, is how to defect without the input of the leader of the PPA, Chief Orji Kalu. Kalu has been at loggerheads with Ohakim, following his defection to the PDP. Although the former governor of Abia State is said to be disposed to returning to the PDP, he has not been forthcoming on his return, while the party has initiated talks with the governor directly. A source said that Governor Orji might not want to upset the applecart, unlike Governor Ohakim, who left for the PDP without Kalu’s blessing. It was learnt that a good number of PDP leaders in Abia, especially those championing the cause of zoning, are disposed to having Orji in the PDP for a second term in office, while the post will shift to another part of Abia under a PDP arrangement in 2015. “The disposition of former Governor Kalu is the hinderance to Governor Orji, but we are sure that will be sorted out soon. Kalu is not opposed to the PDP but he was hoping that he could lead the duo of Orji and Ohakim to the PDP so as to rejoin the party on the position of strength,” a source said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Someone should pls tell me why all must defect to PDP to win an election. ![]() |

Quite Unbeleivable ![]() http://www.tribune.com.ng/29072009/news/news1.html 57 LGs/LCDAs: I ’ll deal with Fashola, - Yar’Adua - As traditional rulers back Lagos gov Okey Muogbo, Abuja - 29.07.2009 PRESIDENT Umaru Yar’Adua, on Tuesday, in Abuja, gave reasons why he would move against Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State over the controversial 37 local development council areas in the state. But the traditional rulers in the Lagos State have expressed support for Governor Fashola, urging him to retain the status quo in relation to the Federal Government ultimatum. Speaking with journalists before travelling to Brazil on a state visit, the president said, however, that before taking any action, he would give Governor Fashola the opportunity of resolving the logjam through dialogue. He, however, added that the governor would be compelled to revert to the original 20 local government-structure after talks might have failed. He said the matter went beyond the issue of ultimatum. He said: “I don’t know what ultimatum. I don’t think the issue between the Federal Government and the Lagos State translates as ultimatum. “What has happened was that I wrote to the Lagos State governor, drawing his attention to the fact that both himself and myself have sworn to preserve, protect and defend the constitution of this country and that the action of the Lagos State Government and the state INEC was unconstitutional, because the constitution provides for only 20 local governments in Lagos State and I advised the Lagos State governor to take steps to rectify this unconstitutional act. “He replied me, quoting the State Statutes and putting forward his legal position that they did not violate the constitution. I have referred his reply to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to study the reply and advise me. “What I am determined to do is that what is constitutional must be adhered to. So if the argument put forward cannot stand on the violation of the constitution, I will invite him to discuss further and dialogue, so that this can be resolved peacefully. “But the bottomline is that, the constitution cannot be compromised. The constitution must not be violated. If at the end of the day, dialogue fails to resolve the situation, then the Federal Government will be forced to take measures that will ensure that the Lagos State government, its SIEC and other agencies are compelled to abide by the constitution. This is a process that will take some few months and I hope that we will be able to resolve the issue through constructive dialogue. “Our democracy is still young. We are bound to make mistakes here and there but the important thing is that we must work hard to ensure that the rule of law works in this country. We know it is not easy but it is important to our survival.” On the crisis plaguing the education sector, Yar’Adua explained: “We have been doing everything possible to stop the crisis. I have met with their officials and the vice-president to re-assess the situation on the crisis with ASUU to see what step, again, the government can take to bring it to an end. “We are anxious; we are, disturbed that we should keep our students in the universities at home for a very long period of time. “One central issue of the disagreement is not even that of negotiation of salaries but the issue of signing an agreement with ASUU. It is this collective bargaining and signing agreement with ASUU that is against our laws and legal system. “ASUU is an organisation with membership cutting across federal and state governments. The Federal Government cannot sign an agreement on behalf, for instance, Lagos State or Kano State, to dictate what they are going to pay to lecturers in their own universities. “The laws of this country have provided for separation of powers. The Lagos State University or Kano State University belongs to the state. They employ the lecturers there; they pay them; they discipline them; they promote them; they also pay their salaries, allowances and everything and we don’t have control over their funds. Their funds are appropriated by their state Houses of Assembly. We can’t direct them by law to say that they should pay their lecturers so so amount of salaries. This is what we are telling them, that let us have your agreement. We are not opposed to it but we will not sign a collective agreement to cut across all tiers of government, because we don’t have the constitutional power to do that. “This is very clear. In this nation, we must respect our laws and this is one of the main points of contention. We told them that for federal universities, the Federal Government will provide the money. But for the state governments, let them go and negotiate with the state governments. “If Rivers can pay the staff of Rivers State University that amount, may be Kano cannot afford to pay the same amount. Meanwhile, Lagos State Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, on Tuesday, rose in support of the position of the state government on, the demand to return the state to 20 local government areas, advising President Yar’Adua to seek redress in court instead of resorting to threats. At a fully attended meeting at the Regency Hall, Ikeja, the traditional rulers and chiefs, under the chairmanship of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, produced a 19-point communique, which they proceeded to hand over to Governor Fashola at the State House, Ikeja. In it, the traditional rulers viewed the ultimatum to the Lagos State government as uncalled for and provocative in view of the fact that the Supreme Court had long ruled that the creation of the local council development areas was in order. Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on Tuesday, condemned the sectarian violence which has led to loss of many lives. He said the unnecessary loss of human lives and the destruction of property as a result of militants attacks were reprehensible. Ban’s spokesperson, Farhan Haq, told journalists in response to a question that the secretary-general expressed the hope that “those behind the attacks will be identified and brought to justice in accordance with the law.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/29072009/news/news1.html Imagine a man of ZERO Achievement giving a threatening notice to a well celebrated Gov'nor. |
THIS IS THE MESSAGE FROM FALANA. Falana Slams Obama over Speech in Ghana By Chinedu Eze, 07.14.2009 Lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana, has berated President Barack Obama over his speech in Ghana, saying it was a huge embarrassment to the African continent and black people. Fielding questions from newsmen yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Falana said Obama was wrong when he said Africans should stop blaming the colonialists for slave trade and subsequent under-development that followed. .“I watched the Obama stop over in Ghana, sentiments apart; I think it was an embarrassment for Africa that Obama only made a stop in Africa. And even at that, it was a ‘yabbis session.’ And that was not what Africans were expecting from the first black President of United States of America . He talked down on Africans. He also said, ‘you cannot blame the under-development on Africa ; you cannot just dismiss it on the basis of corruption of its leaders.’ “And I reject, in its entirety, the statement credited to Obama that we should no longer blame colonialists for slave trade. Why shouldn’t we? Incidentally, he visited the Cape Coast where you have the slave camp. And Obama almost had nothing to say there.” Recalling the slave trade, Falana said Europeans traded on Africans for 500 years and wondered who would pay reparation for the exploitation of the continent over these years. “For 500 years , Africans were illegally seized, they were kidnapped, through terrorist action of the Western countries and shipped to Europe and America to build those countries. “Who is going to pay reparation for them? I thought Obama was going to talk about reparation. The Italian government has agreed to pay N5billion reparation to Libya for colonialism for 40 years. So who is going to pay us colonialism of 100 years? “Who is going to pay Ghana And then you come around and say your problem is your problem, that is unfair. You got to solve your own problem. America must be part of the solution to our problem, because they created part of it, ” he said. Also reacting to part of Obama’s statement where he attributed the decay in the African continent to sit-tight African leaders, Falana also said: “President Obama was in Egypt recently. Is Egypt a democratic country? President Mubarak has been in power since 1981, he was recently in Saudi Arabia , did they hold elections there? So you can’t use lack of democracy or free reign of corruption in Africa to excuse the connivance of the United States government or Western European countries, the connivance of these countries is the destruction of the economy of Africa .” He also said fighting corruption has to be holistic and not partitioned, as it is currently being done in Nigeria. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=148662 |

Over questionable source of wealth •To appear in court July 5 Juliana Francis Police in the United Kingdom (UK) are set to charge Ayorinde, the son of former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Sunday Ehindero to court, days, after he was arrested at Woolwich, London, for unlawful possession of a large sum of money, which source he could not explain. Ayorinde reportedly landed in trouble after he contravened traffic rules and the police had to search his car at about 9.00 a.m., on May 23. According to police sources, wad of pounds sterling were found in the car. Asked where he got the money from, Ayorinde allegedly replied that his father was a former Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria. But he did not say if the money belonged to his dad. Thereafter, Ayorinde was detained at Woolwich Police Station; before the police moved on to search his house. He was later released on bail. Contacted on phone, the police at Woolwich confirmed the arrest. They said Ayorinde might be charged to court on July 5. The Nigerian Compass learnt that the police also discovered, during their search of Ayorinde’s home, that lots of money had been deposited in one of his accounts, in the past three years. The account, which had been closed, was suspected to have been used to launder money. The police were also said to have found fake post office stamps in the house. Already, some of Ehindero’s friends in London are said to have been mounting pressure on the police to drop the case. One of them, simply named as Leke, was identified as the son of a major police contractor during the former IGP’s tenure. Since he retired as the IGP in 2007, Ehindero has been facing several corruption cases. At a time, the Independent Corrupt Practises and other related offences Commission (ICPC) investigated his involvement in a N557 million arms and ammunition money the police received from Bayelsa State. The commission had, on April 2, last year, interrogated Ehindero on how the sum, meant for the procurement of arms and ammunition for the police, ended up in his private accounts in two banks. http://www.compassnews.net/news/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18978:london-police-arrest-ex-ig-ehinderos-son&catid=43:news&Itemid=63 This is seriuos!!!! |

@poster, You could be right by saying Obasanjo is the best president so far in Naija, But what can we say about a very Good Businessman who is about to retire and now go ahead to impose a slowpoke with no sense of achievement to champion his business? Please know this, such a man is a fool. His achievement will be eroded and written off in the heart of people and they will see more of his evil deeds. A good leader should be able to discover a good successor. For example, Tinubu may have his own shortcomings when in governance, but he was able to discover a continuity spirit in Fashola who the whole world is praising today. No matter what Tinubu might have done wrong, people will tend to close their eyes because his successor is getting it right. Yaradua is a disgrace to all the achievement of OBJ and I know OBJ will never be happy an inch with the Zero achiement status of this worthless govt. But He fixed them there, Who will he blame? |

It may not be so easy to come out to name who's who just like that, that can wait tilll after resignation or when she is asked. Meanwhile you guys cannot tell me she did not state the reason for her resignation in her letter. Do you expect her to just start to adress press coference like that? That will not be civil enough. It's a matter of one after the other. Now she has been invited to shed more light on her letter, from there she may tell them more that are not in the resignation letter.
