Politics › No LGBTQ Rights Requirement In Samoa Loan Deal – NBA by Morbeta11(op): 12:08pm On Jul 09, 2024 |
The Nigerian Bar Association has clarified that Nigeria does not recognise same-sex marriage, addressing the recent controversy surrounding the Samoa agreement.
In a statement signed by NBA President Yakubu Maikyau on Monday, July 8, he emphasised that contrary to widespread belief, there is no provision in the agreement requiring Nigeria to accept LGBTQ or gay rights as a pre-condition for a $150bn loan.
It said, “Instead, the agreement was expressly made subject to the local laws and the sovereignty of the contracting Nations.
“That is to say, the SAMOA agreement recognises, for instance, Nigeria’s Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2023 and of course, the Supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”
The NBA asserted that if the agreement had mandated Nigeria to endorse LGBTQ rights, the association would have advised the Federal Government against entering any partnership that could undermine national sovereignty.
It said, “To avoid any doubt, the SAMOA agreement does not, in any way, seek to compromise our existing legislations nor undermine the sovereignty of Nigeria.
“Before the signing of the SAMOA agreement, the Hon. Minister of Budget and Economic Planning requested the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), as a major stakeholder in the polity, to look at the agreement. Consequently, I constituted a committee chaired by Mr. Olawale Fapohunda, SAN, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekiti State and Chairman of the NBA Law Reform Committee, to vet, evaluate and advise on the agreement accordingly.”
The SAMOA Agreement, named after the country of Samoa where it was signed, is a broad legal framework between the European Union member states and over half of the 79 members of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS). It serves as a basis for negotiating specific agreements between the EU, the Federal Government of Nigeria, its sub-nationals, and the private sector.
The agreement, according to the Channels TV report on Tuesday, covers six main areas: democracy and human rights, sustainable economic growth and development, climate change, human and social development, peace and security, and migration and mobility.
Maikyau called on the government to continue public enlightenment efforts and urged other stakeholders to join in countering the negative perception being promoted about the agreement. https://punchng.com/no-lgbtq-rights-requirement-in-samoa-loan-deal-nba/

Education › 72 Nigerian Railway Engineers Trained In China Return by Morbeta11(op): 11:23am On Jul 09, 2024 |
72 Nigerian railway engineers trained in China return
The Federal Government has received 72 Nigerian graduates trained in China by the China Civil Engineering Construction Company.
The graduates were sponsored by CCECC as part of their corporate social responsibility to study Railway Engineering and other transportation-related courses.
The Director, Press and Public Relations, Transport Ministry, Olujimi Oyetomi, said this in a statement on Saturday.
At the reception, the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, highlighted the government’s commitment to Indigenous participation in the railway industry, emphasizing the significance of the National Local Content Policy for Railway, developed in 2018.
This, according to the Minister, is borne out of the realisation of the enormous roles played by the rail transport subsector in the country, which further made the government introduce the “Advocacy for Enhanced Local Content in Nigeria’s Infrastructure Development based on Nigerian – Chinese Bi-lateral Agreements” and thereafter, directed the Federal Ministry of Transportation to look at various steps to ensure effective implementation of the policy.
He noted that the event marked a success of the Ministry’s initiatives.
“The outcome of today’s occasion depicts one of the success stories of the Ministry of Transportation’s initiative, as CCECC has accepted to train Nigerians in China as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility,” the statement read in part.
Alkali expressed optimism about the graduates’ contributions to the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize the railway sector. He mentioned the 25-year Railway Modernization Plan and the Ministry’s support for the policy through on-the-job training programs.
He further explained that the Ministry of Transportation supports the policy by engaging them as engineers and technicians through “On the job training programmes.”
Representing the Vice President, Ibrahim Hadeja, commended the graduates for their good behaviour and thanked CCECC for their role in developing Nigeria’s infrastructure and manpower. “This initiative is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of enhancing local content in Nigeria’s infrastructure development.
The Senate President, represented by Amos Yuhana said, “As a catalyst of change and transformation and a champion of progress, it is my distinct honour to welcome these extraordinary Nigerian graduates, who have returned to help us build the walls of our country.
“We have come to unveil the hidden treasures of these remarkable individuals who have traversed and chatted territories of learning in China and pushed the boundaries of human potential. They have returned to us now, not as mere travellers, but as professionals and with knowledge, skills, and burning desires to shape the destiny of our great nation.”
Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of China in Nigeria, Weng Yingqi, commended the graduates for returning to serve their country, emphasizing their role as exemplars for younger Nigerians. Use the knowledge and skills acquired to provide the backbone to accelerate the development of a great Nigeria he advised.
CCECC Chairman, Jason Zhang, expressed his company’s ongoing commitment to fostering cooperation between Nigeria and China. “This event is a further testament to greater cooperation between Nigeria and China, and we remain committed to deepening mutual understanding and bilateral relations,” he said.
The event culminated in the graduates signing employment contracts with CCECC, signifying their readiness to contribute to Nigeria’s railway https://punchng.com/72-nigerian-railway-engineers-trained-in-china-return/#google_vignette

Politics › 90% Of Diesel Sold In Nigeria’s Filling Stations Illegally Refined- Tompolo Firm by Morbeta11(op): 10:39am On Jul 08, 2024 |
90% of Diesel Sold in Nigeria’s Filling Stations Illegally Refined, Alleges Tompolo’s Surveillance Firm
*Says oil coys secretly patronise communities in N’Delta
*Notes refineries abroad complaining no more stolen crude from Nigeria
A company owned by former Niger Delta warlord, Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, Tantita Security Services (TSS) Ltd., has alleged that up to 90 per cent of refined diesel sold in Nigeria’s filling stations is ‘brewed’ by local communities in the Niger Delta. The firm, which was contracted by the federal government in 2022 to embark upon oil surveillance activities in the region, following the massive fall in crude oil production, stated that almost all the oil companies patronise those who illegally refine the country’s crude.
The Executive Director, Operations & Technical, Tantita, Capt. Warredi Enisuo, who spoke during a panel session at the just concluded Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) summit in Abuja, therefore argued that the communities must focus consistently when the progress of the oil industry is discussed. The panel was themed: “ Exploring Nigeria’s Content Solutions to Meet Energy Demand.”
Enisuo argued that the reason that cheap, illegal diesel was no longer available, more or less, was because of the work that Tantita was doing to stop oil theft in the Niger Delta, insisting that oil communities must no longer be ignored.
“Why is there no scarcity of diesel (right now)? There is scarcity of PMS (petrol). The story is simple. Most of the diesel you buy is brewed (refined) by the communities.“ Don’t let any fuel station deceive you, 90 per cent of the diesel in fuel stations are produced by the communities. It will also interest you to know that even the oil companies, they patronise the local diesel refineries. Don’t let anybody deceive you.
“But they do it illegally and behind the doors. So, as we go with the local content, the board has a lot to do with people with this skill and character. I’m not too sure how much your act has done to establish infrastructure, but to be honest with you, we might need to focus more on the communities,” Enisuo emphasised.According to him, until host oil communities are educated, given affordable and adequate health care and are seen as key stakeholders in the oil industry, the issues currently besetting the oil sector may be prolonged.
“The reason why the price of diesel is high today is because of the work of the private security companies like my company, because we have been able to somehow cut down on a lot of the business, a lot of the illegal refining going on. That is why you see the cost of diesel going up.“Let the communities take on the responsibility of ownership, a sense of belonging. This is why we are making progress. If you give them that sense of responsibility, you should not forget what happened in Niger Delta. But if you put them somewhere where you feel you can outsmart them…these guys will out-greed you,” he argued.
On how to start tackling the challenge, the top Tantita executive argued that building standard educational institutions and health institutions in the creeks is one way, while there should be massive reorientation of host oil communities. To drive the conversation, he noted that government at all levels must take the lead, while the local content board as the regulator, and the oil companies must follow. He explained that the government must do everything to stop the temptation to sell crude illegally to foreign refineries, pointing out that the company receives calls on a weekly basis from foreign refiners complaining that they no longer get feedstock because of the surveillance activities by Tantita.
“In fact, I get, on the average, three calls in a week, of people calling me from overseas that their refineries are about to shut down because they can’t steal crude again the way they used to do. And a lot of Nigerians don’t know this. This is happening.
“So, there’s always going to be that temptation. So, you have to take care of those who are being tempted,” he posited.
He explained that the practice of dealing with a chief or one traditional ruler in a host community should be done away with, since there are complaints that the perks never get to the expected quarters.
“There’s a very big difference in calling the chief and making him a representative of everybody. Then you go back and twist it. And you get things that the whole community participated in.
“There’s some equity participation. You can’t deal with just one person. I’ll tell you a classic example. We have about 45,000 staff. Initially, when we started, we called on the community leaders to come and present the names of community persons that are going to participate in the pipeline security business.
“But we discovered that if we pay them, they’re not going to pay those people. So, we changed the whole thing around and said…we’re going to pay directly to them while they work,” he said.
To some extent, he argued that even that is not a long-term solution, noting that the stakeholders will have to consider establishing industries, beyond the extractive market. “Don’t build the skyscrapers in Lagos and leave the others in squalor,” he advised. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/07/08/90-of-diesel-sold-in-nigerias-filling-stations-illegally-refined-alleges-tompolos-surveillance-firm/

Foreign Affairs › China Now “owns A Country” by Morbeta11(op): 6:39am On Jul 08, 2024 |
China Now “Owns A Country”, Literally! Expert Says There Is No Other Nation With A Higher Debt Exposure Than Laos
Massive loans from China have plunged Laos, one of Beijing’s closest allies in Asia, into a major debt crisis, sparking concerns about the country’s future.
Following a recent disclosure by Laos that its foreign obligations have almost doubled and that it needs more delays to avoid default, China said that it is assisting its neighbor in reducing its enormous debt load, Bloomberg reported.
In a written response to inquiries earlier this week, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Beijing has engaged in “mutually beneficial cooperation” with developing nations, such as Laos, which entails considerable support for social and economic development.
The spokesperson also stated, “At the same time, it has been doing its best to help relevant countries alleviate their debt burden.”
The Chinese statement appears to be firefighting a situation it may have only created. With over half of Laos’s $10.5 billion in external government debt, China is by far the country’s largest creditor. The tiny country’s entire public and publicly-guaranteed debt at the end of the previous year was $13.8 billion, or a whopping 108% of its GDP.
Laos deferred US$670 million in principal and interest payments due to its US$950 million in external debt obligations made last year. According to previous statements from the World Bank, these actions have offered brief respite in recent times.
The majority of Laos’ state debt is attributed to infrastructure deals made under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Troubles continue to mount for Laos as its foreign reserves have been reduced due to borrowing billions from President Xi Jinping’s government to fund roadways, trains, and hydroelectric dams under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The Communist-run Laos started making headlines after it constricted and inaugurated a high-speed train route with China at a cost of almost US$6 billion. Although many view this development as the beginning of a massive infrastructure push that would immediately link Southeast Asia with the world’s second-largest economy, it has also caused a debt crisis.
In addition to a currency crisis, rising food and fuel costs worldwide have also contributed to the Laotian kip’s record low value against the US dollar, which has resulted in skyrocketing inflation. If the current economic crisis gets out of hand, there is widespread anxiety within the country that it could witness an economic collapse.
The government has enacted several stability measures to arrest the crisis, including raising interest rates, issuing bonds, and developing debt management strategies in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank. Additionally, this has resulted in lower spending on necessities like healthcare and education, which may not augur well for the people in the long term.
Experts believe that China’s statement about helping Laos ease its debt burden may be true, given that Laos is one of the few countries where the BRI has proved to be a success story. It has been projected as a “successful model” for other countries to emulate. According to Beijing’s plan, the railway is intended to connect Laos with Thailand before extending to Malaysia and Singapore.
While China and Laos have forged close diplomatic, economic, and military ties, the latter has essentially gobbled up the former—quite literally. Last year, the AidData research lab at William & Mary, which tracks China’s lending, calculated Laos’s total debt to China over 18 years.
Brad Parks, AidData’s executive director, said, “There is no country in the world with a higher amount of debt exposure to China than Laos. It is a very, very extreme example…Laos went on a borrowing spree and got in over its head.”
As Laos plunges deeper into the debt-induced economic crisis, attention has once again shifted to what has been labeled as “debt trap diplomacy” by China’s Western critics.
Although China has an incentive to help the surging debt crisis in Laos and likely even forgive debt, concerns persist that other countries are reeling under debt secured from China and may also ask for similar concessions. Beijing has lent about $1 trillion to developing countries — a huge sum that has drastically changed China’s global standing.
China is known for being the most generous lender in the world, offering credit more readily than other countries. However, it is also known as the harshest lender. Its lending has often come with a cost: a dozen developing nations are in danger of experiencing economic instability or possible collapse.
An Associated Press investigation conducted last year, which covered the 12 states most indebted to China, which include Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, Laos, and Mongolia, revealed that the amount of tax money required to pay for gasoline and food, keep schools open, and provide electricity was increasing steadily to repay the debt. Additionally, it is depleting the foreign exchange reserves that these nations rely on to cover the interest on those loans.
A case in point is the crisis that took place in Sri Lanka. In 2022, when its foreign reserves began to decline, Sri Lanka had its first-ever default. The South Asian country announced last month that it had finalized restructuring deals totaling US$10 billion, including with China’s Exim Bank and an Official Creditor Committee of bilateral lenders.
The AP report noted China’s reluctance to forgive debts and the lack of transparency surrounding the amount and conditions of loans has prevented these countries from receiving financial assistance from other nations. This, analysts reckon, often leaves these indebted states with few options.
There have also been allegations that China has devised a nasty strategy to coerce these borrowers into paying the debt back. According to reports, the borrowers are forced to deposit money into covert escrow accounts, prioritizing China’s payment over other creditors. EurAsian Times, however, could not verify these claims.
Over the years, critics have alleged that China uses debt instruments to’ debt trap’ vulnerable countries that need credit at reduced restrictions. If the country cannot repay the loan, critics allege that Beijing coerces it into turning over key infrastructure assets that may aid Beijing’s geopolitical ambition and help China build a permanent presence in the entrapped nation.
This was especially emphasized when China secured the ownership of Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port.
China, however, continues to refuse these claims as anti-Chinese propaganda peddled by the West. Some analysts have even said that this was a neocolonial policy of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to reports, human rights organizations and activists claim that Laos has had to make concessions, including to its sovereignty, to please Beijing and secure financial assistance.
As a trade-off for not having to repay loans, observers say China now has some control over the Laotian electricity infrastructure. Chinese security forces and police can now operate in the nation and provide security for the new rail line.
However, if the Chinese assertions are anything to go by, the country is working to ease Laos’s debt crisis. In a recent written communication, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry denied the claim of “debt-trap diplomacy,” characterizing it as US rhetoric meant to sabotage Beijing’s collaboration with developing nations.
“It cannot deceive the majority of developing countries,” the spokesperson said in the written reply.

Politics › Lagos Assembly To Pass Law Criminalising Street Begging: Speaker by Morbeta11(op): 6:02am On Jul 08, 2024 |
Lagos assembly to pass law criminalising street begging: Speaker
He noted that the rising number of beggars in Lagos necessitated this regulation. House of Assembly, says the legislative arm is considering passing a law to regulate alms begging in the state.
Mr Obasa said this in an interview with on the sidelines of the launch of the Ibile Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqah Foundation in Lagos.
He said that there was a need for such legislation.
The foundation was launched at a public presentation sponsored by Lotus Bank in Lagos.
It aims to empower less privileged Muslims and alleviate poverty by promoting Zakat, Sadaqah, and Waqf.
Mr Obasa explained that the proposed law would empower the state government and foundations like the Ibile Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqah Foundation to regulate aid soliciting.
According to him, the law will also ensure donations reach the needy without them having to beg on the streets.
He noted that the rising number of beggars in Lagos necessitated this regulation.
“We are looking at how we can manage such situations to stop beggars from parading the streets of Lagos begging for alms.
“Following such legislation, anyone caught begging on the streets or aiding such, particularly among children, would also be sanctioned according to the law,” Mr Obasa said.
Speaking on the foundation’s launch, Mr Obasa highlighted the benefits of Zakat, which helps both payers and beneficiaries by eradicating poverty.
“It is important for anyone blessed by God to reach out to the less privileged.
“This should start from the immediate family and extend to every other member of society.
“The essence is to make everyone equal, or at least to move people from poverty and make them feel comfortable,” he added.
Sheikh Sulayman Nolla, chairman of the board of trustees for the Ibile Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqah Foundation, emphasised the foundation’s goal of unifying all Muslims in Lagos.
Mr Nolla, also the grand chief imam of Lagos, noted that the foundation serves all, regardless of religious background, and aims to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor by pooling resources.
Kafilat Araoye, managing director of Lotus Bank, stated that the bank is supporting the foundation financially, technically, and administratively, ensuring adherence to Sharia and Islamic finance principles.
Mr Araoye stressed the need for permanent solutions to poverty rather than temporary palliatives, given the country’s current economic realities.
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam, requiring eligible Muslims to donate a portion of their wealth annually to aid the poor.
It is typically 2.5 per cent of a Muslim’s total savings and wealth above a minimum amount, or “nisab,” each lunar year.
Sadaqah is a voluntary charitable act, while Waqf is an Islamic endowment of property for charitable or religious purposes. https://gazettengr.com/lagos-assembly-to-pass-law-criminalising-street-begging-speaker/

Governor Nwifuru Gifts 14 SUVs To Newly Ordained Catholic Priests Despite Ebonyi's High Poverty Rate, Cites Support For God’s Work
The governor's generosity comes despite the prevailing economic difficulties and Ebonyi State's struggles with poverty, as reflected in its low ranking on the poverty index.
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru donated 14 new SUVs to newly ordained priests of the Abakaliki Diocese, presenting the vehicles during their ordination at St. Theresa's Catholic Cathedral in the state capital on Saturday.
The governor's generosity comes despite the prevailing economic difficulties and Ebonyi State's struggles with poverty, as reflected in its low ranking on the poverty index.
Governor Nwifuru explained that the donation of vehicles to the newly ordained priests was intended to support and facilitate their spiritual work, enabling them to effectively serve their flock and spread the word of God.
Last July, Governor Nwifuru showed similar generosity, gifting five vehicles to newly ordained priests, demonstrating his consistent support for the religious community in Ebonyi State.
Meanwhile, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, Ebonyi State ranks as the poorest state in Southern Nigeria, with a staggering 80% poverty rate, placing it fourth on the national poverty index. The state trails only Sokoto, Taraba, and Jigawa, all located in the Northern region of the country, in terms of poverty levels.
However, concerns are being raised about Governor Nwifuru's priorities, as civil servants in Ebonyi State have recently expressed disappointment and frustration over the meagre N10,000 salary increment, which falls short of their expectations, sparking questions about the allocation of resources in the state. https://saharareporters.com/2024/07/07/governor-nwifuru-gifts-14-suvs-newly-ordained-catholic-priests-despite-ebonyis-high

Properties › 10-Hour Rainfall: Lekki, Ikoyi Residents Flee Mansions As Flood Ravages Homes by Morbeta11(op): 9:52am On Jul 07, 2024 |
10-hour rainfall: Lekki, Ikoyi residents flee luxury mansions as flood ravages homes, streets
GODFREY GEORGE tells the story of residents of highbrow Lekki, Ikoyi and Ajah areas in Lagos who have had to suffer losses after flooding caused by heavy rainfall
Streets became streams. Reptiles came out to play in the floodwater that overflowed roads and seeped into the homes of the rich, forcing them to leave their palatial mansions for hotels. On Wednesday, July 4, 2024, the skies didn’t stop to cry for more than 10 hours. The rains continued that evening and caused relentless flooding. By Thursday, floating furniture, TVs, mattresses and children’s toys were sighted in several videos posted online.
In several of those online videos, many residents showed how they had to wade through murky waters to leave their homes.
A particular woman, who said her name was Mrs Shade, lamented how she had lost everything in a home she paid a rent of N3.5m every year for. A short tour round her house showed it was a two-bedroom apartment with a balcony and an extra bathroom.
When contacted on Facebook, she told our correspondent that she paid an agent fee of N250,000 when she moved in October 2023.
“I haven’t even stayed up to one year in the house. I have lost everything. From my TV, to my new fridge, my furniture, my mattress and every valuable I have used more than 10 years of my life to build are all gone,” she said.
Shade’s experience mirrors that of many residents in the area that has had to battle this recurring nightmare which has become a distressing hallmark of living in some of Lagos’ most affluent neighborhoods, raising questions about urban planning, infrastructure, and the responsibilities of government and residents alike.
Roads were impassable when our correspondent visited a popular estate in the Lekki Phase II area on Wednesday evening. Homes were left opened and residents, our correspondent learnt, had fled as their havens had become uninhabitable.
Several residents were seen navigating the floodwaters, attempting to salvage their belongings.
In many cases, properties worth millions were damaged or destroyed, with cars, furniture, and electronics among the most common casualties.
In one compound, three cars which were parked outside a parking lot had been half-submerged. It would take an experienced car mechanic to perform his/her magic to make those cars start.
Upstairs, a man and his wife pointed down to the flood downstairs. It seemed they had resorted to remaining up there. But, for how long? The situation was chaotic.
As our correspondent waded through to assess the level of damage, the couple upstairs shouted, asking our correspondent to move back. According to them, there are reptiles in the water.
“Hey, go back. Snakes and alligators might be in the water. This morning, a young boy was beaten by a reptile. Please, go back,” she said.
Our correspondent, now afraid, waded backwards with a phone torch till he got to the beginning of the street upland.
An environmentalist, Mrs Peace Tommy, told our correspondent that the presence of reptiles, such as snakes, is common in flood-prone areas.
She said these reptiles sought refuge from the rising waters, creating additional hazards for the already beleaguered inhabitants.
Fine architecture
It is no news that the Ikoyi, Lekki, Ajah areas are synonymous with affluence and wealth for many Lagosians. In movies and modern social life, several people have associated with the areas, referred to as ‘the Island’ as the evidence of status and class.
Fine architecture and expensively-built homes are a regular sight. Gated estates and high security are also characteristic of the area. But once it rains, the place becomes an eyesore. Floodwater moves into homes and destroy the fine buildings which are often very expensive.
A popular home agent in the area, Mr Babashola Ogunshola, told our correspondent that the cheapest anyone would get a studio apartment (one room with toilet and/or shared kitchen) on the Island would be N1.2m.
“Even in the Ajah area which is not as developed as Lekki Phases I and II, you will not get a good home for anything less than N1m, including agent and caution fees,” he said.
Asked why, he simply said, “It is Island life! If you won’t be able to pay, stay in the mainland.”
A grim recurrence
Wednesday’s episode of flooding is not an isolated incident but part of a troubling pattern that has plagued these highbrow areas for years.
Despite the exorbitant property prices—where a single-room flat can command rents as high as N3.5 million or more—the frequency and severity of flooding have only increased. The root causes of this persistent problem are multifaceted, involving both natural and man-made factors.
One of the primary reasons for the recurrent flooding, experts have noted, is the construction of buildings on floodplains and inadequate drainage systems.
The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, had, on several occasions in 2023 warned residents from building on drainage setbacks.
Several buildings which were built on these setbacks despite government’s repeated warnings were brought down during a routine exercise in October 2023.
Also, environmentalists and town planners have noted that many properties in Lekki, Ikoyi, and Ajah are built on reclaimed land, which is naturally prone to flooding.
Tommy, commenting on the topography, said, “The drainage systems in these areas are often clogged with silt and debris, severely limiting their capacity to manage heavy rainfall. According to experts, around 75 per cent of the drainage capacity in some parts of Lagos is lost due to neglect and poor maintenance.”
The frustration
A resident in one of the homes in Lekki, Mrs Adebola Akinwunmi, recounting her ordeal, said, “I woke up to find my living room submerged in water. Our home is a two storey building. The bedrooms are upstairs and the living room, downstairs. I knew it was raining but I didn’t know it would breach my home’s defences and enter into my livingroom.
“As I speak to you, nothing in that livingroom is salvageable. Everything is gone. Outside, it was as if the flood wanted to carry our cars away. My husband did not know what to do. Our mechanic said he had so much work to do and could not come in the flood. I won’t even let him because I know there are several reptiles in the area.
“My children are still scared. We simply locked the building and found our way to a calm hotel without the chaos. We’ll be here till it all blows over and we’ll then see how we can save the mess. I am sure there is nothing we can do, but we’ll work something out,” she said.
On how she got out, she said, “My husband carried the children and I and crossed the flood. Very brave man! I was so scared for him. He had to climb onto furniture to stay dry. All our appliances are ruined, and the damage is beyond repair, but we thank God for life.”
Another resident who is an executive of the Lekki Residents Association, who did not want to give his name, said he is beyond devastated.
“I knew the floods were coming so I prepared myself since January. I called a mason who came and did some reconstruction on the fence. He also did some form of reinforcement, so that, come what may, the floods would not enter my home.
“All those were nothing. As the rains poured, it was as though I was outside. The water in my house is almost at knee level. I wanted to get my staff to bail it out but then, we don’t know how safe the connections are. It could lead to electrocution. It is very sad and confusing situation, I must say,” the source said.
In Ajah, residents used canoes to navigate flooded streets.
Marketplaces were abandoned as traders scrambled to save their goods from the rising waters. Schools and businesses were forced to close, and many commuters were stranded as major roads became impassable.
According to the 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction for Nigeria released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency on February 20 in Abuja, coastal states like Lagos will have a high amount of rainfall in 2024.
NiMet said, “In 2024, the annual rainfall amount is likely to range between 418 millimetres in the far northern states and over 3000 millimetres in the coastal states.
“The annual rainfall amount is predicted to be below normal over Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Kano, Kebbi, Gombe, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Delta, and Bayelsa states when compared to their long-term averages. However, other parts of the country are likely to observe normal to above normal annual rainfall amount.
“The prediction of the year 2024 indicates a normal to below normal rainfall activity across most parts of the country. Coastal cities and low-lying areas of Nigeria, Benue, Kogi, Rivers, Bayelsa and Anambra states are at higher risk of flooding. Several disasters can occur during the onset and cessation period of the rainy season due to violent storms associated with that period. Flash floods cannot be ruled out because of excessive rainfall expected in some areas.”
The National Emergency Management Agency, on May 3, published an advisory video on its website listing some flood-prone states.
These states include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Edo, Kaduna, Kebbi, Lagos, Kwara, Oyo, Taraba, and Sokoto states.
“Clear away solid waste that blocks drainages and waterways to mitigate flooding. Do not build on waterways. Do not walk through flood waters. Evacuate from flood-prone areas to safe higher grounds. Listen to weather forecasts and comply with safety instructions,” announced NEMA.
In response to the recent flash floods affecting some areas in Lagos State, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency issued a directive urging residents to remain calm and exercise caution as they go about their daily activities.
This was contained in a statement shared by the Agency’s Permanent Secretary, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, and made available to our correspondent on Wednesday.
Oke-Osanyintolu said seven people were rescued on June 3 from a collapsed building due to the heavy and incessant rainfall in Ewenla in the Mushin area of the state.
The permanent secretary advised that citizens should minimise outdoor activities and travel only when necessary.
He said, “The Agency and other key responders are on high alert while urging the good people of Lagos to remain calm and refrain from any non-essential travels due to the incidence of flash floods across the State.
He added that all emergency services are available to respond to distress calls and provide necessary assistance
Lagos cannot escape flash floods – Govt
The Director of Public Affairs of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adesina, during an interview with our correspondent said the Ministry is aware of flash floods cases in some areas, adding that there are measures in place to prevent loss of lives and property.
Adesina explained that flash floods should be expected because Lagos state is a coastal city surrounded by waters. He however noted that the water levels would normalise a few hours after heavy rainfall.
He said, “It was not about the response of the ministry to the recent flash floods. We have always put proactive measures in place for times like these. We have year-round programs and measures regarding drainage maintenance and construction. Lagos is a coastal city and one-third of Lagos is under water.
“We know that there is rainfall on a yearly basis and there are seasonal rainfall patterns released at the beginning of each year. This serves as a guide to all the states including us. We also have weather stations that we have created including a water level monitoring group. Lagos is at the receiving end of about seven rivers from different states. So, we are at the receiving end whenever rain falls.
“Lagos will have more than normal rainfall. That is why we had a major press briefing early this year to disclose what is likely to happen for us. We also sent an advisory, telling people who have houses in flood-prone areas to vacate their homes when heavy rain starts. They can stay with their relatives for the time being.
“What we experience in Lagos is flash floods and this happens when the magnitude of rain is so much on the Island which is discharged into the Lagoon, the water level of the Lagoon rises.
“So, you will have flash floods in some areas. But the truth is that two or three hours later, you will realise that the flash flood is gone, and everything returns back to normal.
“During the recent rainfall, we deployed our emergency responders to some areas like Olopomeji where the water paths had been blocked by refuse and are experiencing flash floods. After clearing the paths, we discovered that everything was back to normal some hours later.”
Adesina noted that while flash floods should not cause panic as it is manageable, residents could worsen the situation by constructing buildings or dumping refuse on water paths. This, he said, could block water flow and result in flooding.
He said, “People drop refuse on water paths, and it is because they don’t want to patronise waste collectors. These are the same people that wake up very early in the morning and drop their refuse on the road. That is why the state waste management agency deploys its taskforce to go round, and they have been seeing people coming out at 12 midnight to dump refuse on the road. Many of them are elite. At the end of the day, the act will come back to hunt them and the whole environment.
‘Get a place before moving to Lagos’
“Thousands of people are coming into Lagos without considering where they want to live, the infrastructure they will depend on, and other factors. There is freedom of movement so we cannot prevent them from coming in. but these people do not have anywhere to live. They build shacks and defecate on the road. People also build houses in flood-prone areas. These among other habits are endangering the people and the environment. People know what is right but don’t do it,” Adesina added.
Speaking on the long-term measures by the ministry, the spokesperson said, “Part of what the ministry is doing is the construction of infrastructure to aid water movement. Contracts have been awarded for the construction of new canals and repair of already existing ones. Since Lagos is a coastal city, there will be flash floods when there is torrential rainfall but we continue to ensure that necessary infrastructure is in place to allow the waters to pass.
“We also make sure that people are enlightened from time to time. What is safer is that they should not build houses on flood plains. Some people have decided to go and meet the water in its natural habitat. When you push water away from its habitat, the water will fight back when it rains.”
‘Remove illegal structures’
Meanwhile on January 31, the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olumide Oluyinka, in a statement, said the government would commence the removal of illegal building attachments and conversions across the state by February 15.
“The state would not tolerate the spate of lawlessness witnessed in commercial centres such as Lagos Island, Ikeja, and Iyana-Ipaja, where shops are illegally extended with sheds and steel external stairways in a bid to attract customers,” he said
Oluyinka explained that those who erected structures within the right of way of power lines, canals, and pipelines to prepare for massive enforcement by the ministry, adding those who erected structures within the right of way of power lines, canals, and pipelines to prepare for massive enforcement by the ministry in two weeks’ time.
Similarly, on June 23, the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Wahab Tokunbo, issued a 14-day ultimatum for owners of buildings in the Sangotedo in the Lekki, Okota, and Isolo areas of the state, noting that some places in the area had been identified for the construction of drainage channels.
Tokunbo made the announcement while conducting an inspection to some sites in the areas where constructions had begun.
The commissioner said, “The era of environmental indiscipline and nuisance are over in Lagos. We will not shy away from enforcing all relevant laws irrespective of whose ox is gored. Lagos despite its peculiarities as a coastal state with low-lying terrains and a high population density among others has remained afloat because of various measures put in place by the government.
“Climate change is real and there is a cholera outbreak. We must know that all these things are interwoven. We must all be responsible and responsive as a people. People cannot continue to brazenly abuse the environment and expect that there will be no consequences.
“A 48-hour contravention notice has been served to owners of buildings lying within the channels and 14 days abatement and when that elapses the law will take its course.
“We will commence full enforcement after the expiration of all notices with an option of voluntary compliance.” https://punchng.com/10-hour-rainfall-lekki-ikoyi-residents-flee-luxury-mansions-as-flood-ravages-homes-streets/

This initiative envisioned to propel economic growth and development throughout the West African sub-region, received Nigeria’s endorsement.
The single currency is part of the features in the three-in-one Identity cards planned by the National Identity Management Commission and set for roll-out by August.

Nigerian Social Media Influencer Ijele Challenges Federal High Court Jurisdiction In Cybercrime Charge, Files Motion To Dismiss Case
Nigerian Influencer Ijele Contests Lagos High Court's Authority In Defamation Suit, Files Motion To Dismiss Case
It is submitted that count two of the amended charge contains an alleged offence unknown to law, as well as alleged acts that did not constitute a crime at the time of the alleged event, the implication of which same is unable to confer jurisdiction on this Honourable Court and is liable to be struck out.
A social media influencer, Mr. Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, popularly known as Ijele has challenged the jurisdiction of a Federal High Court in Lagos to determine its cybercrime and criminal defamation case.
Ijele, through his team of lawyers led by Mr Femi Falana (SAN) in a Notice of Preliminary Objection dated June 28, 2024, urged the court to strike out the case.
The case was filed by the Inspector General of Police as the Complainant/Respondent.
The Nigeria Police Force is prosecuting the case on behalf of Evangelist Ebuka Obi’s Zion Prayer Ministry Movement Outreach.
The Notice filed by his lawyers reads, “TAKE NOTICE that the Defendant/Applicant is challenging the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court on the following grounds: Count 1 of the charge alleges conspiracy is illegal as the Defendant cannot conspire against himself.
“Count 2 of the amended Charge is illegal and unconstitutional because: A) The National Assembly lacks the vires to enact laws on phonographic. materials. B) It is based on the Cybercrime Act 2015.
“Count 3 alleges offences that fall within the jurisdiction of the state High Court.”
The notice asked “whether this Honourable Court has jurisdiction to entertain this charge, as presently couched”.
In its arguments, Falana and Co. submitted that “this Honourable Court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain this amended charge.
"In arguing this issue, recourse shall be made to the specific grounds of objection on the basis of which the Defendant contends that the Honourable Court lacks jurisdiction to entertain this charge.
“It is submitted that count two of the amended charge contains an alleged offence unknown to law, as well as alleged acts that did not constitute a crime at the time of the alleged event, the implication of which same is unable to confer jurisdiction on this Honourable Court and is liable to be struck out.
“Section 36(12) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) states that subject as otherwise provided by this Constitution, a person shall not be convicted of a criminal offence unless that offence is defined and the penalty therefore is prescribed in a written law; and in this subsection, a written law refers to an Act of the National Assembly or a Law of a State, any subsidiary legislation or instrument under the provisions of a law.”
The Notice further noted that it is “a cardinal principle of our concept of criminality, and which is protected by our Constitution, that a person can only be charged with and convicted for an offence recognised by the law and in existence at the time the act alleged was committed...This is the hallowed and sacred principle of legality. “It is because of its importance and high public policy that the legislative jurisdiction of the legislature is also excluded from having retrospective effect in relation to any criminal offence whatsoever.”
“Now, what is the allegation in count two of the amended charge dated May 15, 2024?” the legal team asked.
The lawyers noted that the “thrust of the allegation in count two of the charge is that the Defendant allegedly made an online publication sometime in February 2024, against a certain Ebuka Obi of Zion Movement Outreach, purporting him to be a fake pastor and thereby damaged his reputation.
“The important question that this Honourable Court is urged to answer upon a careful examination of this allegation is whether it constitutes an offence known to law under the Cyber Crime Act upon which it has been purportedly filed or under any other law?
“We hasten to answer in the negative. While the allegation is not conceded, but even on the merit thereof, it is submitted that there is no law in Nigeria criminalises any publication that allegedly damages a person's reputation. At best, the nominal complainant can only find remedy in a civil suit, not by filing a criminal charge.”
In another argument, the team noted, “Again, we must ask, did the alleged act of causing reputational damage by way of online publication constitutes an offence as at February 2024 when the Respondent claimed the incident occurred?
“We, once again, hasten to answer in the negative. In bringing this application, the Defendant seeks to save this Honourable Court's precious judicial time for what is certain to be a dead end for this charge, irrespective of any attempt to amend it a thousand times.
“To further buttress the futility of count 2 of the charge, the Complainant has brought it under section 24(1)(a)(b) and (2)(a) (b) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act (as amended) 2024.
“However, there is no section 24(2) of the Act. Section 24(1)(a) of the Act talks about sending pornographic content while section 24(1)(b) of the Act talks about threat to life and breakdown of law and order.
“The Honourable Court is respectfully called upon to take judicial notice of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act 2015 (as amended) in February 2024. In the case of IDRIS υ Α.Ν.Ρ.Ρ (2008) S NWLR PT 1088 1, the Court held that a Court of law is perfectly entitled to take judicial notice of all laws. The implication of the foregoing is that count 2 of the amended charge dated May 15, 2024, is dead on arrival. The acts alleged in the count did not constitute an offence at the time they were allegedly made nor constitute an offence under any known law?”
In conclusion, Falana and Co. said, “Arguments have been proffered to demonstrate to this Honourable Court that the instant charge (as amended) is grossly lacking in merit and ought to be struck out.
“It is submitted that the issues of jurisdiction raised in this application bother largely on substantive law, which parties cannot elect to waive. This Honourable Court, is, therefore, urged to timeously strike out this charge and save the Court's precious judicial time.”
The case was adjourned to July 19, 2024 for ruling.
On Tuesday, June 25, SaharaReporters reported that a set of lawyers representing Ijele in the cybercrime and criminal defamation case had raised the alarm over his deteriorating health condition.
Deji Adeyanju & Partners, through one of their lawyers, Silas Onwugbonu, Esq., in a public statement dated June 24, 2024, lamented that the influencer’s health condition had worsened to the point of coughing up blood.
This is according to a public statement on the ‘Deteriorating Health Condition Of Mr. Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu (IJELE) At The Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos State.’
In the public statement, the law firm states, “We wish to draw the attention of the general public to the deteriorating health condition of our client, Mr. Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu (IJELE), who has been detained since March 19, 2024, at the instance of the Nigeria Police Force, on a purely civil dispute.
“A few days ago, our attention was drawn to the fact that our client, who is currently detained at the Nigeria Correctional Centre (NCC), Ikoyi, Lagos State, is gravely ill. “As at the time of issuing this public statement, our client’s health condition has deteriorated to the point of coughing up blood, with no medical facilities available to restore his health within the NCC, Ikoyi.
“It will be recalled that in furtherance of its desire to perpetually keep our client in detention, the Nigeria Police Force has filed three pending identical charges FHC/ABJ/CR/159/2024; Inspector General Of Police V Chizorom Harris Ofoegbu: FHC/L/312C/2924; Inspector General Of Police V Chizorom Harris Ofoegbu and FHC/AWK/CR/2024: Inspector General Of Police V Chukwuka Chizorom Ofoegbu, against our client, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Lagos and Awka, all at the instance of the same coalition of nominal complainants, and for the same alleged civil dispute.”
The law firm recalled that Ijele was granted bail by a Federal High Court in Lagos on June 14 but added that it was frustrated by the police. https://saharareporters.com/2024/07/05/breaking-nigerian-social-media-influencer-ijele-challenges-federal-high-court#google_vignette

Nigerian Government Should Withdraw From $150billion Samoa Agreement Over LGBTQ Conditions – Shehu Sani
Nigerian Government Should Withdraw From $150billion Samoa Agreement Over LGBTQ Conditions – Shehu Sani
Despite oppositions by many religiously opinionated countries, the Samoa Agreement named after the Pacific Island Samoa, has been gradually gaining traction.
A former federal lawmaker from Kaduna State, Senator Shehu Sani, has said that the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government should go back and unsign the Samoa Agreement it signed on November 15, 2023.
Despite oppositions by many religiously opinionated countries, the Samoa Agreement named after the Pacific Island Samoa, has been gradually gaining traction.
The agreement is said to have some clauses that compel underdeveloped and developing countries to support the agitations by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community for recognition, as part of conditions for getting financial and other supports from developed nations.
On Monday, information about the ratification of the deal by the Nigerian government filtered the air, when the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, confirmed that Nigeria signed the agreement at a reception organised by the European Union (EU) in Abuja.
With such controversial conditions of the agreement, some clerics, human rights activists and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria objected to the decision of Tinubu-led Nigerian government to sign the Samoa Agreement.
However, Bagudu’s media assistant, Bolaji Adebiyi, on Wednesday said the documents signed by the Nigerian government, which the Minister made reference to, were strictly for the economic development of Nigeria.
Adebiyi said that there is nowhere in the documents were LGBT or same-sex marriage was mentioned even remotely.
He stated that it would be wrong for anyone to imply that Nigeria had accepted those tendencies, stressing that what Bagudu signed was in relation to a $150 billion trade component.
But while also reacting to the reports of the Nigerian government signing of the $150 billion Samoa deal, Senator Sani said that African countries should not accept loans or grants from any country or group of countries that came with what he described as demonic conditions.
He said, “African states should not accept loans or grants from any country, group of countries or international institutions that came with demonic conditions antithetical to our culture, religious faiths and values.
“All African countries including Nigeria who appended their signatures should go back and ‘unsign’ the Samoa agreement.” https://saharareporters.com/2024/07/04/nigerian-government-should-withdraw-150billion-samoa-agreement-over-lgbtq-conditions

Crime › Terrorism: Over 7,000 Killed In Five Months Across West Africa – Yusuf Tuggar by Morbeta11(op): 4:48am On Jul 05, 2024 |
Terrorism: Over 7,000 killed in five months across West Africa – Minister
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has urged the Economic Community of West African States to unite in addressing the causes of insecurity in the region.
He noted that between January and May 2024, over 7,000 people have died in more than 800 terrorist incidents across the region, with Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali being particularly hard hit.
Tuggar, who spoke at the opening of the 52nd session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council in Abuja, on Wednesday, emphasised the need for collective action against terrorism and violent extremism, which threaten the stability and development of West Africa.
The minister, who is also the chairperson of the council, stressed that the fight against terrorism must be a shared responsibility, requiring unwavering commitment from all ECOWAS member states.
He said, “Between January and May 2024, our region has witnessed over 7,000 deaths as a result of more than 800 terrorist incidents. Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali have been particularly devastated by this relentless violence.
“This stark reality highlights the staggering human cost of insecurity and underscores the urgency for coordinated and decisive action to combat this menace.
“Terrorism does not recognise borders. From the Sahel to the coastal States, no country is immune to its devastating impact. It is therefore crucial for every country within ECOWAS, including those in the Sahelian belt, to understand that the fight against terrorism is not the burden of a few but a collective responsibility.
“Therefore, we must remain united and demonstrate unwavering commitment and resolve to safeguard the lives and futures of our citizens.”
Tuggar called for enhanced regional cooperation, effective intelligence sharing, and robust funding for the ECOWAS counter-terrorism force.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing underlying issues such as climate change, migration, organized crime, and economic inequality to build a stable and prosperous region.
“As we join forces to find common solutions to the continuing challenge of violent extremism and foreign interference, we should also remain mindful of the broader challenge of cooperation to help tackle the underlying causes of instability in our region: climate change, migration, organised criminal activity, global terms of trade and access to financing.
“Our task today is to consider how best to meet the immediate symptoms of the condition we face and also how to establish firmer foundations to reduce inequality and poverty and strengthen democracy,” he added.
The minister noted ECOWAS’ ongoing peace support operations in countries like Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia and the plans for a stabilisation mission in Sierra Leone.
Additionally, he highlighted efforts to tackle humanitarian challenges, including disaster risk reduction and providing relief materials to affected communities.
As the council deliberated on various proposals, Tuggar urged members to remain united and committed to the principles of peace, democracy, rule of law, and good governance.
“Let us also pledge to work tirelessly for the security and prosperity of our region, for the overall benefit of our people and the generations to come,” he concluded.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, expressed concern over the ongoing standoff with the Alliance of Sahelian States, emphasizing its detrimental impact on regional integration.
Touray highlighted persistent challenges in governance, development deficits, and evolving geostrategic and geopolitical dynamics posing threats to regional cohesion and integration efforts.
“The continued standoff between the Alliance of Sahelian States and ECOWAS is preoccupying and undermines the integrity of the regional integration agenda.
“Against this backdrop, our region continues to face challenges of governance, development deficits, and the rapidly changing geostrategic and geopolitical enjoinment that threatens regional cohesion and the integration process,” he noted.
Widely regarded as West Africa’s foremost political and regional authority, the Economic Community of West African States, formed in 1975 to foster economic integration among member states, has faced challenges in recent years stemming from a series of military coups in the region.
These include incidents in Mali in 2020 and 2021, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Niger in the past year.
Regrettably, three of these nations, which had previously considered forming a counterforce, the Alliance of Sahel States, in response to ECOWAS following the overthrow of Niger’s democratically elected government, formally announced their withdrawal from the organisation on January 28, 2024.
Currently, under military governance, these countries stated in a joint declaration that they were leaving ECOWAS due to what they perceive as a deviation from the founding ideals of the organisation and pan-Africanism.
However, sanctions were lifted in February 2024 following mediation by Nigeria’s former military head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon.
Touray emphasised that the decisions were made in the interest of fostering unity and ensuring security within the African sub-region. https://punchng.com/terrorism-over-7000-killed-in-five-months-across-west-africa-minister/

Ruto orders withdrawal of salary increment for ministers, lawmakers amid uproar
It was reported on Tuesday that Mr Ruto’s ministers and Kenyan members of parliament received a pay rise effective July 1.
Amid public outrage and nationwide protests, President William Ruto has instructed his ministers and lawmakers to “live within their means,” ordering the withdrawal of their recent pay rise.
Mr Ruto conveyed this directive through Hussein Mohammed, spokesperson for the Kenya State House, on Wednesday, amidst criticisms following reports of the pay rise for ministers and lawmakers.
“The President has emphasised that now more than ever, the Executive and all arms of government must live within their means,” Mr Mohammed said, adding that Mr Ruto has instructed a review of salaries for his ministers and lawmakers.
It was reported on Tuesday that Mr Ruto’s ministers and Kenyan members of parliament received a pay rise effective July 1.
According to local media, the pay rise for Mr Ruto’s cabinet members and lawmakers coincided with nationwide protests that have resulted in over 39 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Previously, each cabinet secretary who earned Ksh. 957,000 will now earn Ksh. 990,000 plus allowances, and each of the 51 principal secretaries who earned Ksh. 792,519 will now earn Ksh. 819,844.
The salaries of the speakers of the National Assembly and Senate increased from Ksh. 1,185,327 to Ksh. 1,208,362, while salaries of members of parliament increased from Ksh. 725,502 to Ksh. 739,600.
Although deliberations on salary increments for Mr Ruto’s cabinet members and lawmakers occurred months ago, their implementation coincided with deadly protests against a tax hike.
However, Mr Ruto later announced the suspension of the pay rise for his ministers and lawmakers for the time being. https://gazettengr.com/ruto-orders-withdrawal-of-salary-increment-for-ministers-lawmakers-amid-uproar/

IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu Reportedly Agrees To Comply With Tinubu Govt's Terms Of Release
The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly agreed to comply with the conditions set by President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government for his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
This was disclosed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe representing Abia South Senatorial District on Wednesday after their recent meeting between the South-East Senators and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) on Kanu’s release.
Led by Senator Abaribe, approximately 15 federal lawmakers participated in the closed-door meeting.
Senator Abaribe, speaking on behalf of his colleagues after the meeting, expressed optimism that the Attorney-General would influence the Federal Government to consider releasing Kanu.
He emphasised that Kanu's prolonged detention was contributing to heightened insecurity and unrest in the South-East region.
Vanguard reports that Senator Abaribe disclosed that he had personally met with Kanu at the DSS headquarters, where Kanu expressed readiness to comply with any conditions set by the government for his release.
The senators' meeting with the Attorney-General followed the South-East governors' decision to appeal directly to President Tinubu for Kanu's freedom.
Earlier, a group of 50 members from the House of Representatives had urged President Tinubu to instruct the Attorney-General to use Section 174 of the Constitution to terminate the terrorism-related charges against Kanu in court.
Nnamdi Kanu's legal saga began with his initial arrest in Lagos in October 2015, subsequent bail in April 2017, and eventual escape from the country amid his trial. He was re-arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and has since remained in custody of the DSS.
Despite the Court of Appeal's order for his release in October 2022, the Supreme Court later overturned this decision in December 2023, allowing the Federal Government to proceed with the trial on seven remaining charges.
This ongoing legal battle continues to attract significant attention and advocacy efforts from lawmakers and leaders in the South East region of Nigeria. https://saharareporters.com/2024/07/03/ipob-leader-nnamdi-kanu-reportedly-agrees-comply-tinubu-govts-terms-release#google_vignette

Nobody Will Recognise Nigeria When Tinubu Completes Remaining Seven Years – Senate President, Akpabio
In his latest comedy-like address, Akpabio on Tuesday told Nigerians not to worry about the challenges facing Nigeria but only pray for the success of the Tinubu’s administration, saying it would pay off in the next seven years.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in another public gaffe on Tuesday, said nobody would recognise Nigeria again by the time President Bola Tinubu completes his "seven years" in office, obviously gifting the latter a second term.
Akpabio weeks ago had said the old Nigerian national anthem was responsible for heightened banditry and insecurity in the country.
In his latest comedy-like address, Akpabio on Tuesday told Nigerians not to worry about the challenges facing Nigeria but only pray for the success of the Tinubu’s administration, saying it would pay off in the next seven years.
Speaking during the flag-off of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja on Tuesday, Senator Akpabio said, “I have no doubt that by the time the president is through with his tenure in the country, seven years from today, many people will not recognise FCT, they will not recognise Nigeria again.
“So, all I can say is: let us continue to pray for him and be hopeful that the challenges you see today, tomorrow, you will see them no more.
“He did it in Lagos and today, Lagos is one of the best; one of the largest economies in Africa when we are talking about cities.”
On the project, the lawmaker said, “This is for me another major wonder of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. This is a way to cater to a city of this nature. This is a way to cater to the people of the area councils, the FCT residents and visitors alike.”
Akpabio, who also extolled President Tinubu for picking former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike as the FCT Minister further said, “So, I believe that you are a square peg in a square hole and I must thank the President for having the eyes to pinpoint those who can perform and bringing them.” https://saharareporters.com/2024/07/02/nobody-will-recognise-nigeria-when-tinubu-completes-remaining-seven-years-senate

Chadian Military Reportedly Kills 70 Boko Haram Terrorists, Destroys 5 Major Camps
The Chadian military has reported that its troops killed no fewer than 70 Boko Haram terrorists and destroyed five major terrorist camps in the Lake Chad region.
According to a security analyst and counterinsurgency expert in the Lake Chad, Zagazola Makama, the Lake Chad’s General Staff of the Armed Forces said that a commando unit of the Rapid Intervention Force (FIR) conducted a series of air-land and nautical military manoeuvres in the localities of Litri, Kaiga-Ngouboua and Kaiga-Kindjiria, which led to the killing of the terrorists.
The General further said that the operation which was carried out with the support of the defence and security forces, also led to the destruction of five terrorist camps, including Boko Haram's main base in the area.
It was gathered that the entire human and material apparatus of the terrorists was pushed out of Chadian territory, leading to a significant reduction in major terrorist attacks in the region.
The military authority said the operation followed "Operation Lake Sanity 2" led by the Multinational Joint Force (FMM) on Cameroonian and Nigerian territories, which pushed Boko Haram terrorists into Chadian territory.
The statement from the Lake Chad’s General Staff of the Armed Forces reportedly added that the Chadian military's swift and decisive action had dealt a major blow to the terrorist group's capabilities in the region.
The General highlighted the effectiveness of the Rapid Intervention Force (FIR) in supporting the defence and security forces in the fight against terrorism. https://saharareporters.com/2024/07/01/chadian-military-reportedly-kills-70-boko-haram-terrorists-destroys-5-major-camps#google_vignette
