MultiChoice Nigeria Finally Introduces Pay-Per-View Pricing Model For DSTV/Gotv Subscribers

The issue of adopting the pay-per-view model against the usual monthly subscription model which is obtainable in Nigeria has been a subject of discourse for a while now. For some people, the wait is over while for some people, the injustice is over.

Most of the DStv/GOtv subscribers are complaining bitterly about the price reap-off of this current subscription regime and consider it as a cheat and believes that we should only pay for what we consume.

Finally, Multichoice Nigeria has announced it would be launching a Pay-Per-View (PPV) option in the country. The company says this would allow subscribers watch some important programms not available on their bouquet. Though, at an extra cost to the willing consumers.

According to the HPR, “Pay TV operation is not like the telecom version where you pay for the amount of airtime you want to use. Pay-as-you-go, as believed by some customers, is not obtainable in the pay TV business,”

“Paying for PPV in Europe and the UK is equivalent to paying for two months subscription in Nigeria. We know Africans love boxing that is why we are bringing the best thing that is happening in the world to Africa.”

Many subscribers of Multichoice Nigeria's pay-TV service are currently having issues with the company on its fixed subscription regime.

Some of the company’s pay-TV subscribers state that Multichoice should extend the pricing model to over all its bouquets. Consumers say the current pricing regime is unfair and waste of resources as they usually don’t get the value for their money.

One subscriber lamented bitterly, saying:

“Having a pay-per-view could be a good alternative, as to me the current subscription regime is a cheat on me. Initially, I used to do the full bouquet like N13000 ($42.5) and then I just thought I was wasting money and reduced it to around N3000 ($9.. What I really watch on the DStv is the E!,” said Ms. Olamide, a DStv subscriber.

Another Explorer subscriber of the DStv pay-TV states that: “The current regime is a reap-off on subscribers as we should only pay for what we consume.”

“I feel the PPV thing should work. I suggest this should be based on option as there many channels and for the explorer package where they record some of the best movies for you to watch. Then, how would do this as it would also affect them.”

This might be a good development as there is no sufficient electricity to enjoy the value of your monthly Pay TV subscription.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted personnel of the Nigerian army over acts of humiliation committed against unarmed members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Aba, Abia State.

In a statement signed by Chinwe Nnorom, Head of Publicity Division, on behalf of PDP National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye, the Party described the acts of torture as “the depth of callousness and a further descent into the gutter by people who are paid to protect life, property as well as the Country’s territorial integrity.”

The statement reads:

“The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is appalled by the emergence of a video clip which has gone viral, that shows acts of humiliation against unarmed civilians by members of the Nigerian Military. “That if true, is the depth of callousness and a further descent into the gutter by people who are paid to protect life, property as well as the Country’s territorial integrity..

“The PDP believes that human life is sacrosanct and must be treated as such by all and sundry; the right to life and liberty as enshrined in our Constitution and other international conventions must therefore not only be respected and protected, but must be seen to be so.”

It could be recalled that the Nigerian Army has said it is already investigating the three-minute clip in which a flag of Biafra could be seen on the ground in front of the men who laid face down. They were eventually flogged and forced to drink and sleep inside dirty water.

However, the statement added that:

“the PDP welcomes the initiative of the Nigerian Army’s probe on the issue but given the enormity of this allegation and the respect with which we hold life, the Party hereby calls for the setting up of an independent panel of experts on human rights to ascertain the veracity of this allegation.

“Where they are proven to be true, the PDP demands that all perpetrators as well as all those connected, however remotely, be immediately brought to justice. This would go a long way to not only serve as a deterrent, but also reassure the international community that Nigeria is not a jungle but a decent society where human rights are being promoted.

“Finally, the PDP frowns at and condemns violence in all its ramifications and calls on all Nigerians, wherever they are, to eschew it and live peacefully with one another.”

This is unblievable and yet the FG is denying it. The former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode popularly known as FFK says he spoke to the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu and he confirmed that some soldiers were terrorising his community in Umuahia, Abia state since 2 days now.

Recall that IPOB members came on social media earlier in the day to make the same allegation which the Army jumped in and said the allegation was untrue.

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it has agreed to consider the federal government’s offer and suspend their strike. The news comes after 12 hours, 30 minutes of a closed door meeting between ASUU and a government delegation in Abuja which started 1:38pm on Thursday, September 7 and ended 2:15 a.m. on Friday, September 8.

According to PT, the leadership of ASUU, however, said though it accepted the proposal presented by the government, it will take the proposal to its members and get back to the government in a week. The national president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, told journalists after the meeting that the union will come back after one week to take its final decisions.

In his words:

"Now we have some concrete proposal that we will take back to our members for consideration."
Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, said ASUU’s demands have been addressed and the union will get back to the government in a week after consulting with its principals.

Recall that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists, (NAAT), announced that they would join the ASUU strike on Wednesday, September 6.

The president of SSANU, who is also the chairman of JAC while speaking at a press conference in Abuja explained reasons for the industrial action, saying the nationwide strike would be total and comprehensive.
