Six citizens of the Republic of Benin have been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for allegedly siphoning fuel from vandalised pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. It was learnt that the suspects – Suru Hunpevi, 30; Messel Hungo, 25; Mark Huntoji, 22; Emmanuel Somoten, 18; Joseph Gbehan, 21 and 29-year-old Gbenonu Jonas – were rounded up on Sunday on the sea in the Badagry area of Lagos while they were about to cross the border to their country. PUNCH Metro gathered that 53 drums of about 13,250 litres of diesel were recovered from the suspects while a pumping machine and the two speedboats they used for the operation were also impounded. This is just as two other suspects – Abayo Adeolu, 39, and 29-year-old Ademuyiwa Eniafe – were apprehended with 1,550 litres of petrol in Ita Oluwo, Ikorodu area of the state. The Lagos State command of the corps said the Beninoise suspects had yet to speak up on the alleged crime due to language barrier. But Adeolu, a commercial driver, and Eniafe, a carrier, confessed that they were hired by a woman identified only as Iya Aliya to transport the fuel to where it would be sold when they were arrested. Adeolu said, “I am a driver and shuttle between Ikorodu and Ogijo. I was working on Sunday when the owner of the car, Wale, called me on the telephone to help Iya Aliya carry a load. It was when I got there that I discovered it was fuel. I was afraid but the woman assured me that there would be security for me. I was promised N4,000. I want the government to have mercy on me. My wife and child died a few months ago. This is my first time of doing a job like this.” Eniafe said the driver had given him a free ride while he was returning from his friends. He told PUNCH Metro that he was introduced to the deal afterwards, adding that he carried a jerrycan of fuel for N100. He said, “I am a carrier and I collect N100 per jerrycan. I went to play with my friends at Elepete in Ikorodu on Sunday. While I was returning home around 8pm, I stopped the driver to give me a ride. On getting into the vehicle, I saw the fuel and the woman on a motorcycle ahead of the bus. I know the woman very well. She begged me to assist the driver. When we got to Ita Oluwo, the NSCDC men stopped us. ” The NSCDC Commandant in Lagos, Tajudeen Balogun, said the suspects would be charged to court upon the completion of investigation and urged criminally minded people to steer clear from pipeline vandalism, stressing that the command would ensure that the culprits faced the full weight of the law. He said, “The arrest we made in Badagry was done on the sea around Gberefu Island. The six suspected vandals were Beninoise and wanted to cross the border to the Republic of Benin. Fifty three drums of petrol with 250 litres in each drum were recovered from them. We also seized two speedboats and a pumping machine from them. They were suspected to have siphoned the fuel from vandalised NNPC pipelines. “The two suspects were arrested on Sunday around Ita Oluwo, Ikorodu, with a bus filled with fuel-laden 50-litre jerrycans. Investigation is still ongoing.”
