Foreign Affairs / South Africa To Deport Zimbabweans Again! by Mpele(m): 7:32am On Sep 08, 2010
HARARE – South Africa will in December resume deporting undocumented Zimbabweans, ending an 18-month moratorium on deportations of illegal immigrants from its struggling northern neighbour, officials said on Thursday.

The moratorium on deportations was first implemented in April 2009 in an attempt to regulate the stay of Zimbabweans in South Africa, thousands of whom continue to flock to their more prosperous neghbour in search for jobs and better living conditions.

South African government spokesman Themba Maseko said the special dispensation for Zimbabweans would be scrapped on December 31.

"After the 31st of December all undocumented Zimbabweans will be treated like all others and their deportation will resume," said Maseko.

He said Zimbabweans already working, engaged in business or studying in South Africa will be issued with relevant permits on condition they produce valid documents to show they are citizens of Zimbabwe.

Maseko said a joint monitoring and evaluation committee set up by Harare and Pretoria will work to ensure that deserving Zimbabweans have necessary documents to allow them to stay in South Africa.

But one of the key organisations that work to defend the rights of foreign immigrants in South Africa criticised the move to resume deportations saying it will spark a witch-hunt against Zimbabweans by state immigration officials and that it could also fuel xenophobia against foreigners.

The People Against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP) group said: "Attempts, like what we saw in 2008, to arrest and deport Zimbabweans will likely lead to an outbreak of xenophobic violence.

"We believe that the large number of deportations and the proceeding "witch hunt" of foreign nationals by the national immigration branch and South African police were a major factor in creating the conditions that lead to the culture of xenophobia that haunts us today."

The group said it hopes to meet with the department of home affairs to discuss its unhappiness with the deportation plan and to ensure that the rights of Zimbabweans were protected.

South Africa, which has Africa's most prosperous economy, is home to millions of foreign nationals, many of them living illegally and seeking better opportunities from failed economies like northern neighbour Zimbabwe.

There no exact figures of how many Zimbabwean live in South Africa but estimates put the figure at anything above two million or above a sixth of Zimbabwe's total population of 12 million people.

Locals often complain that the immigrants steal their jobs or lower working standards by readily accepting below market wages, while also overloading government social services.

An outbreak of xenophobic violence in 2008 left at least 62 foreigners dead and thousands of others displaced, leaving foreign investors unsettled and South Africa's image as one of the more tolerant countries in the world shattered.

Similar xenophobic attacks broke out soon after the end of the FIFA World Cup ended last July but security forces were this time round quick to move in to quash the violence and protect foreigners. – ZimOnline.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Xenophobia - South Africa . What Your Opinion by Mpele(m): 7:47am On Jul 29, 2010
Xenophobia is mainly in poor areas of SA. Some of us went to school wth lot of Africans and we never had a problem with them.
This is clearly a legacy of Apartheid, it has done a lot of psychological damage, most blacks never knew that other places existed. They don't really see other blacks as people, especially if you are darker.
It is up to government to teach Black South Africans, that they're the same as their African brothers, they're not better than them.
I've also realised that Zulu's and Xhosas are the most xenophobic.

Foreign Affairs / British Journalist Sabotages Sa World Cup Security. by Mpele(m): 6:58am On Jun 30, 2010
British journo to face music

A BRITISH journalist arrested for being part of a plot to discredit South Africa’s World Cup security is on his own.

The police arrested Simon Wright, 44, on Monday and he was charged with defeating the ends of justice and contravening the Immigration Act.

He is also accused of harbouring British fan Pavlos Joseph, who stormed the England team’s dressing room in Cape Town after their match against Algeria on June 18.

Brigadier Sally de Beer said Wright was granted R3000 bail when he appeared in court in Cape Town on Monday. He is due back in court to day.

Police chief General Bheki Cele told the National Press club in Pretoria that the police believed Wright “orchestrated” Joseph’s breach of security.

“We believe this was orchestrated and involved the cooperation of a number of individuals,” Cele said.

The police also accuse Wright of booking Joseph into a hotel, allegedly using false or incorrect particulars, and interviewing him after the dressing room incident.

“The police believe the motive was to show the World Cup security in a bad light and possibly to profit from the act,” Cele said.

While Britain’s Sunday Mirror defended Wright’s actions yesterday, the British embassy, SA government and SA National Editors Forum distanced themselves from Wright.

Embassy spokesperson Gary Benham said Wright would have to face prosecution on his own.

“We never comment on judiciary processes against British nationals,” Benham said.

International Relations and Cooperation department spokesperson Saul Molobi said they would not approach their UK counterparts.

“We would raise the matter through diplomatic channels if a government or an embassy official were involved.”

Molobi said since Wright was a private citizen the department would leave the matter to the police.

Sanef chairperson Jovial Rantao said Wright would have to face the law.

“Journalists are not above the law, and Wright must face the consequences of breaking the law,” he said.
Cele said yesterday that Wright and Joseph were not acting alone. He said video footage would prove this theory.

After the incident, the Sunday Mirror reported how Joseph had confronted former England captain David Beckham in the change rooms.

He reportedly told Beckham: “David, we’ve spent a lot of money getting here. This is a disgrace. What are you going to do about it?”

England drew 0-0 with Algeria.

Nick Fullagar, spokesperson for the British newspaper group Trinity Mirror which owns the Sunday Mirror, defended Wright’s actions last night.

“It was an absolutely legitimate story that he was involved in,” Fullagar was quoted as saying on the Sunday Mirror website.

He said the journalist “conducted himself properly as he would have here in the UK. We have spoken to him and he’s got a lawyer”.
Sports / Re: Nigerians Wake Up We Are Nigerians Not Ghanaians by Mpele(m): 10:06am On Jun 28, 2010
Most of us are behind Ghana all the way. This is not about the United States of Africa, as it is just a stupid idea, but South Africa have always had a soft sport for Ghana, that is why even Abedi Pele was our bid ambassoder. As for the Nigerians I would understand, they're just jeoulous of the success of Ghana. Nigeria claims to be the giant of Africa in everything. Here is something to think about.
Ghana is the first country to gain independence and will be the first in Africa to reach the semifinals if not the Finals, (get that into your thick skulls)
South Africa being the first country in Africa to host the world cup have clearly given Ghana the support it needs to go all the way. South Africans are supporting Ghana like their own.
Sports / How South Africa Won The Right To Host The 2010 World Cup (exclusive) by Mpele(m): 7:02am On Jun 23, 2010
How South Africa swung the vote in their favour

South Africa won the right to stage the 2010 World Cup only through hectic lobbying during the last 48 hours before FIFA's 24-man executive voted on Saturday. This turned certain defeat into a stunning victory.

The Telegraph can reveal that on Thursday the vote count was exactly the reverse of the final outcome: Morocco 14, South Africa 10. But helped by the personal intervention of Nelson Mandela and the South African president, Thabo Mbeki, a crucial block of four votes swung to South Africa, unleashing unprecedented scenes of joy in the Rainbow Nation.

In Zurich, Archbishop Desmond Tutu promised all the FIFA executive first-class air tickets to heaven as he danced a jig in front of Mandela who, despite being 85 and looking very frail, declared: "I feel like a young man of 15."

The four votes were controlled by Jack Warner, a FIFA vice-president from Trinidad and head of CONCACAF, the federation representing north and central America and the Caribbean. They have three votes on the executive but Warner is also believed to have spoken for the solitary executive vote of Oceania.

Warner began his working life teacher in Port of Spain, but through his involvement with international football he and his family are believed to have amassed a personal fortune of around £30 million.

Four years ago Warner was a key player promoting South Africa's bid to stage the 2006 World Cup. The attempt failed by one vote, with Germany winning thanks to the abstention of Charles Dempsey, the Scottish-born FIFA member from New Zealand.

Warner was expected to be another key supporter but some time last year he turned cold on South Africa, refusing even to return calls. In the last six months on two FIFA occasions, the Congress at Doha last October and the executive committee meeting in London in February, he made no secret of his opposition to the South Africa bid, giving a strong indication to me that his group would vote for Morocco.

In Zurich, while the rest of the FIFA executive members were in one hotel, Warner was based in the same hotel as the Moroccans. On Thursday the Moroccans were predicting victory, confident they had 14 votes.

On Friday morning Mbeki and Mandela flew to Zurich. At around 8am Warner, accompanied by Chuck Blazer, the FIFA executive member from the United States, met the South Africans in their third-floor suite. Whatever was said, Warner's mood when he emerged was very different.

I saw him as he left and asked how the vote would go. He said: "Who knows, anything can happen." Then he gave a big smile. It was clear the anger he had previously shown towards South Africa had dissipated.

FIFA votes for World Cups are notorious for their unpredictability. Whatever influence the Moroccans felt they had exerted had clearly been cancelled by the intervention from Mandela and Mbeki.

Warner was also under pressure from FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who was keen on South Africa, and he was also visited in his hotel room by Abedi Pele, a former Ghana international who campaigned for South Africa, and Danny Jordaan, the South Africa bid leader.

Meanwhile, in other hotel rooms there was a meeting of the four executive members from Africa, with Ismail Bhamjee, the FIFA member from Botswana, under pressure to vote for Morocco. He resisted and was the only one from Africa to vote for South Africa.

Even on Saturday morning the outcome was still in doubt. The South Africans had decided that they could not let Mandela be publicly humiliated. He would go to the World Trade Centre in downtown Zurich, where the result was to be announced, only if it was certain South Africa would win. At 11.30am, 30 minutes before the result was due, Mandela was still in his hotel.

FIFA, determined to keep the result secret, had confiscated the mobile phones of the executive members. The vote had been taken by 9.50am but only a few FIFA officials knew the result, and Blatter was not among them.

At 11.30am the South Africans finally found out and Mandela set off, delaying the announcement by a few minutes. At lunchtime, as South Africans held a celebratory buffet, Blazer sat next to Mandela and South Africans raised a glass to the American.

By then the South Africans were in heaven.

How the vote went
S Africa Morocco Egypt
Europe 4 4 0
Asia 1 3 0
Africa 1 3 0
S America 3 0 0
Concacaf 3 0 0
Oceania 1 0 0
Blatter 1 0 0
Total 14 10 0

It is such a shame that our so called African brothers decided to vote for the Arabians(Morocco) We have not forgot about this! THANK U VERY MUCH AFRICA!!

At least in Bafana Bafana, most of us South Africans never expected them to go far, taking in consideration that we are in group with 2 world cup winners.

So no the self proclaimed "giant of African footaball" have become the only team to loose all their matches, in fact I hope the Koreans beat U to a pulp! From now on their known as the Super Chickens!

As South Africa we have accepted our shortcomings as a nation. We're not really good in football, but at least there is Rugby and Cricket to console ourselves with.

It is time Nigerians realise that they're not a giant of African football, they're just a bunch of loosers, with a lot of self importance. They have average players.

Go Ghana & Ivory Coast!!!!

No one is gonna come here and want to dictate to us! To hell with those who don't want the vuvuzela. I would understand if it was the Europeans complaining, but Nigerians, hell no! Nigerian and African people are actually the noisiest people on the planet, why would they suddenly want to complain about noise! Most of the Africans it is not really about the vuvuzela, but clearly, envy! They can't understand as to how can the country they hate most organise such an event.

Nigeria politician caught with bellyful of cocaine

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said on Monday it arrested 52-year-old Eme Zuru Ayortor at Lagos' Murtala Mohammed International Airport.

May 17, 2010 8:13 PM | By Sapa-AP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nigeria's drug enforcement agency says it has arrested a politician who allegedly swallowed 2 kilograms (nearly 4.5 pounds) of cocaine to fund his election campaign.

The agency says the pharmacist-turned-politician was trying to board a flight to Germany when a scanning machine detected an abnormality in his stomach.

Agents say they found 100 individually wrapped packages of cocaine inside his body.

The politician claimed his failed 2007 run for the Edo state House of Assembly ruined him financially and smuggling drugs was the only way he could fund his 2011 election bid.

He has yet to be charged.
