Sports'world Cup In Sa A Mistake' So Says Bayern Munich Boss by Mpele(op): 1:34pm On Jan 27, 2010
World football supremo Joseph Blatter made a big mistake when South Africa was elected host of the 2010 World Cup, Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness was quoted as saying.

Hoeness told the local Muenchner Merkur daily that he will not travel to the June 11-July 11 tournament which faces new security concerns and low ticket sales.

"I was never a friend of a World Cup in South Africa and Africa as long is the security issue is not 100 percent solved," Hoeness said.

"Mr Blatter had to have his way, I always considered it wrong.

"Now you have to make the best out of it (but) I am convinced that deep down Mr Blatter has realised that giving the World Cup to South Africa was one of the biggest wrong decisions he ever made."

Security has always been a key issue around the World Cup, but it was raised again after three men died earlier this month when gunmen attacked the Togo team at the African Cup of Nations in Angola.

However, South African officials insisted that everyone will be safe at the World Cup.

Poor ticket sales for the World Cup have also been reported, with a news conference on the issue scheduled for later on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

What little Ghana must realise is dat for it to be succesful it needs Nigeria! It must be happy dat it has a powerful neighbour like Nigeria. Instead of trying to compete with Nigeria, they must aspire to work with it!
The situation with Ghana is like with Botswana in the South. They have a strong currency, but their economy depends on the South African economy, they're like dwarf. Their citizens think that a country of 1.4 MILLION inhabitants which is dwarfed by that of Pretoria can compete with South Africa.

That's the case with Ghana, the cocoa producing country is nothing more than a darling of Barack Obama. They still have a long way to go, if they want to compete. For now they must just compete with the likes of Senegal, Angola etc!!
Foreign AffairsThe Usa Turns Back France Military Plane In Haiti by Mpele(op): 7:27am On Jan 19, 2010
The international effort to deliver humanitarian aid to the victims of last week's Port-au-Prince earthquake was hit by bickering today as a French government minister accused the Americans of trying to occupy Haiti instead of helping it.

Thousands of American soldiers have poured in to Port-au-Prince airport since President Obama announced that he was ordering a "swift and aggressive" campaign to help millions of Haitians left homeless by last week's 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

Six days after the quake, however, precious little aid is getting beyond the airport perimeters - largely because of security concerns - and aid agencies with long experience of operating in disaster zones have complained that their flights in are being blocked unnecessarily.

Among the aircraft turned back by American air traffic controllers who have assumed control at Port-au-Prince airport was a French government Airbus carrying a field hospital.

The plane was able to land the following day but the decision to turn it back prompted an official complaint from Alain Joyandet, the French Minister for Co-operation who is overseeing the French aid effort.

Speaking to Europe 1 radio from an EU ministerial meeting in Brussels this morning, Mr Joyandet said that the UN would have to clarify the role of the US in the Haitian aid effort. "It's a matter of helping Haiti, not occupying Haiti," he said.

Mr Joyandet's sniping is likely to anger the White House although the Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, warned both governments and aid groups not to squabble as they try to get their aid into Haiti.

“People always want it to be their plane , that lands,” Mr Kouchner said. "What is important is the fate of the Haitians.”

Before becoming a politician Mr Kouchner made his name as humanitarian pioneer, founding the doctors' charity Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) in 1971.

MSF is among the aid agencies directly affected by the logjam at Port-au-Prince airport. Its operations manager in Port-au-Prince, Benoit Leduc, complained today that five MSF flights have been turned back so far, three of them carrying cargo and two medical staff.

"We clearly had about 48 hours extra delay because of this access problem," he told journalists in a conference call.

One of the MSF flights turned back on Saturday was carrying a large inflatable hospital of a type that MSF have used in various disaster zones since the Kashmir earthquake four years ago. The flight was diverted to the neighbouring Santa Domingo and the hospital and ther medical supplies are having to be brought in overland.

Foreign AffairsHaiti: Chinua Achebe Calls For South Africa, Nigeria To Do More by Mpele(op): 10:28am On Jan 18, 2010
Professor Chinua Achebe has called on the Nigerian and South African governments (two of the largest economies on the African continent) to more vigorously join the international community - particularly the remarkable and admirable example of the United States and the European Union - and provide much needed funds and other forms of aid to the people of Haiti for disaster relief.

The legendary author of Things Fall Apart and other African masterpieces, also called on the international powers to allow ousted former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, now exiled to South Africa, to return to his country of birth and join the efforts there to rebuild that Caribbean nation at this time of greatest need.

He lamented the state of affairs in Nigeria today and blamed decades of political ineptitude and corruption amongst several other ills, on Nigeria’s inability to emerge as an important global economic, political, and in this case humanitarian player; even though the country had earned over half a trillion dollars from petroleum since independence.

He called on all eligible Nigerians to participate in the democratic process, insist on free and fair elections and choose competent leaders as a first step in addressing this decline.

SA rallies behind efforts to aid Haiti's earthquake victims
Jan 14, 2010 11:08 PM | By The Editor, The Times Newspaper

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Times Editorial: South African aid organisations are doing this country proud with their rapid response to the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More conservative estimates of the number dead stand at 50000, though the country's consul-general to the UN, Felix Augustin, was quoted by CNN as saying that more than 100000 have perished.

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, uttered these chilling words: "So, so many buildings, so many neighbourhoods totally destroyed, and some neighbourhoods we don't even see people. So I don't know where those people are."

What is encouraging is the huge humanitarian relief effort that the world has undertaken to try and save lives and provide basic services to the devastated city.

Disasters such as this require a rapid response by those with the resources to help, and the proximity of Haiti to the US has led to a quick response.

In South Africa, the aid organisation Gift of the Givers, which has helped out with several international disasters, is preparing to lend assistance.

Its efforts and those of others preparing to help are to be praised and supported by all South Africans who want to help those in their hour of need.

Questions do need to be asked about the early-warning systems that are supposed to predict such events, thereby allowing sufficient time for evacuation.

But right now, the focus must be on saving lives.

On Sunday four survivors were pulled from the rubble by an international search and rescue team and although chances were fading for anyone still trapped in the rubble, the South African members said they will not stop looking.
