http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2209520/The-world-Nigerias-floating-slums-Heartbreaking-photos-reveal-struggle-villagers-forced-live-shacks-water.html

Their canoes drift on the water as piles of rubbish float outside their shacks.
Shabby shacks on stilts, floating waste and rickety boats fill the expanse of murky water.
But for the thousands of poor people forced to live in Nigeria's infamous Makoko slum in Lagos occupied by the people of the Yoruba ethnic group , this is their home. shocked

Every day life for the many fishermen and their families revolves around paddling and rowing through the filthy, oily water in the slum - but this does not stop the young children from beaming when they see a camera.
Authorities threatened to knock down the dilapidated homes, which are classed as 'illegal' buildings and have been branded an 'environmental nuisance', the BBC reported.
The threat, which was issued in July and gave residents just 72 hours notice, saw some homes reportedly having their stilts hacked off and shacks being destroyed.
The move struck fear in many of the dwellers hearts and they feared they would be left without shelter as they had nowhere to go or anyone to turn to.

But, months after the reported demolition warning, a group is now planning on building a floating school, in a bid to improve the lives of the youngsters who live in Makoko.
The settlement, which is built on Lake Lagos, is regarded as an eyesore by authorities as it is built on a huge waterfront.

Activists strongly criticised the clearance in July, saying the move would mean thousands would be displaced, the BBC reported.
The slum is visible from the bridge which connects the Nigerian mainland to the Lagos' rich island districts, and the eradication of the slum is part of a plan to clean up Lagos and improve its image.
The infamous slum was said to be created in the 18th century as a fishing village, but has ballooned as others have sought to find a home.

Having admitted to 178 burglaries, and with a previous spell in jail for the same offence to his name, Taoreed Ogboye must have been expecting another stint in prison.

https://i.imgur.com/995tp.jpg
Instead, the judge gave him another chance and ordered him to take part in a rehabilitation course.
Ogboye, 24, began in a positive fashion by starring in a crime prevention video for police, in which he advised families to keep lights on, install alarms and CCTV and keep valuables in safes.
But barely a month later he was ransacking people’s homes again.

He has now been jailed for five years for the crime spree, which netted around £400,000 of valuables – none of which has been recovered.
And the Mail can reveal the initial reprieve was granted despite Ogboye previously receiving a 42-month jail term for burglary, the proceeds of which paid for an Audi TT and an apartment in a luxury development where he rubbed shoulders with pop stars, actors and Premier League footballers.
One of his victims, who asked not to be named, said: ‘He wasn’t a drug addict who arguably couldn’t help himself – he was just plain greedy. Why did they give him the chance to offend again?’
Ogboye’s life of crime began when he was 16. By 2007, he was ransacking homes throughout Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and London. He targeted Asian families, believing they would be more likely to have valuable gold and jewellery.

Last September, he entered a house in Luton and took £30,000 of valuables. On December 16 a neighbour alerted police to a raid on a Watford address and Ogboye was found hiding in a wheelie bin.
At court on April 23, he admitted to three offences and asked for 175 more to be taken into consideration.
Judge Andrew Bright, QC, deferred sentence and put him on the ‘Choices and Consequences’ rehabilitation programme, under which he had to wear an electronic tag and obey a 9pm to 6am curfew.

Chance: Judge Andrew Bright QC told Ogboye that he had wasted an opportunity to change his life when he jailed him yesterday at Luton Crown Court
But as soon as May 28, London-born Ogboye was back to his old ways, when he and another man broke into a house in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. More jewellery was taken from a house in Barnet on June 5.
Ogboye, of Hatfield, was arrested after his electronic tag showed he had been in both areas at the time.
Appearing at Luton Crown Court yesterday, he admitted attempted burglary and burglary. He was also dealt with for the offences he admitted earlier this year.

'He wasn't a drug addict who arguably couldn't help himself – he was just plain greedy. Why did they give him the chance to offend again?'
Prosecutor Neil King described the defendant as a ‘burglar of considerable professionalism’ whom other criminals paid to act as a ‘burglary consultant’ by identifying the best properties to target.
Veronica Reeve, defending, claimed her client broke into homes to prove he wasn’t in league with police after other criminals saw the anti-crime video and assumed he was informing on them.
Jailing Ogboye yesterday, Judge Bright said he had ‘seemed to be trying’ to leave his life of crime behind but added: ‘Your commitment was shortlived.’
A Hertfordshire Police spokesman yesterday defended the rehabilitation programme, saying: ‘Ogboye was addicted to a lavish lifestyle, which is quite difficult to get away from. He liked living the high life.
‘He couldn’t be helped but admitted 170-odd offences which might never have been solved otherwise.’

searchcorp: I'm currently on my way to akwaibom via onitsha, (now how is that your business?... Well, listen?

Some few minutes away from asaba.. Just 3 seconds infront of my driver (at about 100km/s), some young men had just blocked the road. They flung themselves out of the bush with their guns raised.. They made an immediate attempt to snatch the first car they could lay hands on - a black toyota sequia jeep right infront of us. The man pumped his pedals to put his suv on reverse. Well, so did my driver.

The armed robbers (Landlord of the road as the villagers called them "ahian, na here them wan operate again today? No be under that hill them suppose dey rob. Dem just change today" a villager told us later)

Their lack of mechanical mobility rendered their chase invalid. Although they had to prey on a red 911 bus whose driver wasn't courageous enough to turn. Well, as regards the james bondly black jeep driver in my front. Remember nah, yes! The one that almost got his suv snatched. When we later got a place to park, the man opened his trunk and brought out the most beautiful pump action I have ever been priviledged to see in close range... Well that explains his driving-bravery - he nah some sharp guy.

Our hearts were still panting fast, I probably was breathing off my skin pores as it felt like the universe had punched me in the chest. When all of a sudden in less than 5 mins... The Nigerian Police patrol van hurriedly gave them a counter attack (following the other lane and making a u-turn to catch them head-on). For the first time in my life I am proud of the Nigerian Police. The armed robbers all ran into the bush immediately leaving the passengers in the red 911 bus alive to tell the story.

I want to say a very huge thank you to the Nigerian Police Force- Delta State Command. Bless You! Bless Nigeria.

As for me, I'm at ontisha - owerri express road now.... Having a funfilled journey.
Since when did the delta state police command handle security issues in Anambra state?

Gbawe: Even as it is obvious this thread is borne of insincerity, it still exposes a serious and worrying topic. I think perversion is growing because of very easy access to pornographic materials through the net and cheap chinese DVD's. It is not even a Nigerian problem alone as I see other West African nation battling this problem too.

In a West African Nation I visited, there was a case where rape immediately increased significantly , in a rural area, after an 'entrepreneur of dubious morals began showing porn in his own converted cinema!!!! These problems will increase because of how Africans are - too often displayed on this forum. Alas, we cannot even confront a very serious issues with sincerity because everyone is busy engaging in childish antics designed to taunt others.
Can you please explain how this thread was created of insincerity ? I created a thread to address the rise of perversion in Nigeria and all you can do is make flimsy accusations . Shame!

Ogbonaikenna: mr i know all, okachamara, what have you done for Biafra actuallisation?
Mr illiterate if you have 3million people from your family to sacrifice for a war then go ahead and do that you have my support but if not then i would suggest you pick up the banana and walk back into your cage you ape.

You think war is childs play right ? Why the hell do you think advanced nations pushing for self determination like Kosovo and Catalonia choose to go through legal and peaceful means ? Do you think they don't have the man power or economic power to wage a war against the countries they are currently oppressed in ? South sudan lost roughly 500,000 - 1million in the war for secession they waged against the Sudanese government but guess what? they still had to go through the LEGAL and NON VIOLENT means (via referendum) before they gained independence .
All this dumb chest beating wouldn't take igbos far and i am glad we have less of your type (apes in human skin)in the south east .

Being classified as a blood thirsty rebel group is the last thing any group pushing for self determination need as none of the western powers / UN would back your cause . Why do you think those pushing for the republic of catalonia has distanced themselves from ETA and have chosen to push their cause through legal means ? Why do you think the irish nationalists distanced themselves from IRA ? because all of us dey for Nairaland they argue no mean sey all of us dey the same level . I know more about international politics than you and your faceless BZM charlatan "Messiah" would ever know. The International media plays a very important role in self determination . Biafra has a lot of cases (The Asaba massacre that was carried out by Murtala Mohammed , Starvation etc)that could be presented to the International media and could be used as a strong foundation for the biafran cause . Once you gain a strong hold on the international media houses and stage peaceful protests at the UN HQ and Nigerian embassies abroad then you would have successfully scaled the first hurdle . I hate to say this but as of now we haven't even taken the first step towards BIAFRA let alone scale the first hurdle.

A 54-year old generator repairer has been sent to jail for allegedly sleeping with his 16-year old daughter and impregnating her in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

The man, Mr. Tajudeen Sanni, who hails from Oyo State was charged to the Family Court, Kakawa, Lagos, for impregnating his daughter and subsequently sent to Ikoyi Prison as he could not perfect his bail condition on time.
The 16-year old girl (name withheld) is now in custody of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for adequate care.

The victim had accused her father of sleeping with her several times, resulting in her being pregnant.

If Mr Tiamiyu Ibrahim, a 45-year-old mechanic, had been part of the Nigerian contigent to the just concluded London 2012 Olympics, he, probably, would have won a medal for Nigeria. The only snag is that his field of specialisation, 'bedminton' was not part of the sporting activities listed for the tournament. IDOWU ADELUSI, in this piece, reports the story of a man who put his mother-in-law in a family way.

MRS Aminat Ibrahim's story appears fictitious, but it is not. The claim of the 40-year-old trader that her husband is the father of a four-month-old baby girl born by her mother leaves one wondering whether Aminat knows the weight of her claim or not.

Mrs Ibrahim said she was ashamed and rattled by the development, adding that her unrepentant mother had threatened to curse her for exposing her misdeed.
Narrating how love affair developed between her mother and the husband, Mrs Ibrahim said her mother, who lived in a village at Apomu Area of Osun State, had been visiting them regularly at Oje Area of Ibadan where they (couple) lived.

CHESSBOARD: Easy men, information at any point in time or place spread like wild fire. NL is not that Bad
You spread entertainment gossip and ethnic bigotry through a $h!t hole like Nairaland , Calls for self determination should not be spread through Nairaland. Mr Onwuka only choose Nairaland because he is a faceless coward and a charlatan . If he is serious about this then :

1.He should release a press statement / secure an interview with AP , CNN , BBC , Aljazerra , Reuters , Times . Media houses are the BEST way to get the attention of the world , The story of the BIAFRAN war is hidden and you would be surprised that more than 70% of the world don't know about the atrocities committed by the Federal troops against the igbos (3 millions igbos died in this war and mind you this is the number of casualties ACCOUNTED for , the rest were declared missing ) .

2.He should push for the arrest of the Majors and Generals involved in the atrocities that took place from 1967 - 1970. The holocaust took place some 60 something years ago and immediately the allied forces defeated the Nazis the Nazi generals / prison wardens were hunted down by the interpol / cia for close to 7decades . The Biafran war story is deliberately being swept under the carpet by those who had a hand in the incessant blood shed and their crimes should be exposed to the world.

3.He should lead a peaceful protest at the UN HQ and at the Nigerian embassy in the USA , UK , Germany , France etc until he gains the attention of the international media and makes a speech at the UN assembly.

4.He should go to world renowned universities and get in touch with respected political science professors and students who can also join in the peaceful protests and calls for self determination.

5.He should make a video journal / interview the family members of deceased MASSOB members who were killed by Nigerian military for being members of a non violent self determination group. He should use this to draw the attention of the international media and the world at large .

6.Rather than declare independence (which would translate to undermining the sovereignty of Nigeria)he should push for a referendum and get the likes of EU observatory body to inspect the polls etc.

7. Arguments should be based on the UN laws that support the self determination and emancipation of a people for their economic advancement and livelihood .

Article 1 of the U.N. Charter common:

“All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right, they freely
determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural
development.”11

Declaring independence without a referendum or SNC would lead to unfortunate circumstances and would have devastating results. Mr Onwuka had better study international law else he be made a scape goat.
