asha 80: Ijaw rejects six zonal structure September 9, 2012 by Allwell Okpi 131 Comments
The Ijaw nation has proposed the restructuring of Nigeria along ethnic lines, rather than the current six geopolitical zonal structure.
The Chairman of the Ijaw National Congress, Joshua Benamaisia, told SUNDAY PUNCH that Ijaw people were spread across six states — Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Delta, and Ondo — in two geopolitical zones — South-South and South-West.
Benamaisia said the Igbo nation were entirely within the South-East geopolitical zone, there was need for the Ijaw nation to have its own separate territory.
Benamaisia said the prime aspiration of the Ijaw nation was the establishment of true federalism, where every ethnic group would control the resources in its area.
He said the Ijaw nation had suffered injustice under the current structure and would not drop its demand for the abrogation of the Land Use Act, and other laws that removed the rights of the people over their land and natural resources.
He said, “If not that our constitution does not recognise referendum, there would have been a referendum on how the country should be structured. Since that is not possible, a national conference should be convened so that people can decide how they can continue within sovereignty of Nigeria. But the issue is after the national conference, the resolution will still have to be ratified by the National Assembly; that is what the law says.
“If it is in places where the will of the people is respected, then we can be sure that the National Assembly will pass the resolution of the people. But here we cannot be sure of that.”
Benamaisia said the Ijaw nation would keep pushing the right to control their resource until they get it.
He said, ‘We are not interested in all these talk about revenue sharing formula. Our position is total resource control. It is only when people are allowed to control their resources that they would decide what to do with it.
“For instance, if you are driving on the East-West Road, the roads are so bad and we have resources here and it is used to develop other places. We don’t have infrastructure in our place; neither do we have federal presence in our area. So, we need to control our resource. It is our right.”
Supporting Benamaisia, the spokesperson of the Ijaw Republican Assembly, Ankio Briggs, said Nigeria’s federalism was faulty in not recognising the different ethnic nationalities as units.
“It is not that we do not accommodate other ethnic groups. The Ijaw people have suffered much injustice in this country that we are now looking at the country’s structure based on ethnic grouping. The Ijaw people in Ondo State, which is in the South-West, are not strangers. So there is need for them to be associated with Ijaw people in the other states in the South-South,” she said

Sports › Ajose Loses WBC Title To Argentine Boxer by Mrchippychappy(op): 1:47pm On Sep 09, 2012 |
Lucas Matthysse of Argentina early Sunday, cracked the iron head of Olusegun Ajose to win the WBC interim Junior Welterweight title via a knockout in the 10th round. After a constant sledgehammer attack by Matthysse (32-2, 30KOs), the fast-moving Ajose (30-1, 14KOs), was obliterated in front of thousands of raucous fans at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las vegas. Matthysse started slowly as the hard-chinned Ajose used his speed and agility to win the first round convincingly. Fans of Matthysse knew that their fighter is a slow starter. Round two saw Matthysse opened up the big guns and scored some pinpoint right hands to Ajose’s chin. The Nigerian never blinked. “I thought I had him a few times,” said Matthysse, whose prior win was a knockout over Mexico’s Humberto Soto. “It was a tough fight.” In the third round Matthysse began attacking the body and that opened up the firing lanes for the Argentine. Ajose kept moving around firing back but the effect of his punches didn’t seem as potent as before. It was all Matthysse from then on. The bombs flowed freely for the next six rounds but despite some eye-wincing blows Ajose kept fighting. Finally, in round ten, a right hand snapped the Nigerian’s head violently and that was followed with a pair of big right hands and down went Ajose with a thud. It was a brutal end of Ajose. Referee Russell Mora stopped the fight for a technical knockout win for Matthysse. “He was a hard puncher, the hardest I ever fought. But I’m disappointed in myself,” said Ajose, concluding that a good champion comes back to fight again.” Matthysse won the WBC interim title and was very pleased by the accomplishment. “I finally got my belt,” said Matthysse. “Now I have my dream and it’s going to be tough to take it away from me.”http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2012/09/09/ajose-loses-wbc-title-to-argentine-boxer/ |

Seriously is this what Nairaland has turned into . 1.A place where yoruba tribal warlords can make disgusting comments on other tribes and not get banned but the moment you reply them you get banned for some days. 2.A place where criticizing PDP , APGA and other parties is seen as fair game but the moment you criticize ACN you are labeled as "awon 40 computers" and the next thing you know you are banned. 3. A place where tribal bigots are made moderators of a website that claims to be the "home for Nigerians "? 4.A place where the achievement of other governors who aren't members of ACN is swept under the carpet but the little achievements of an ACN governor is splashed right on the frontpage. As far as i am concerned i think its high time Nairaland considers a change of name . Probably a name like ODUDUWALAND would be better suited. YOU CAN DELETE THE THREAD IF YOU LIKE . Crime › Robbers Build Hotel With Robbery Money by Mrchippychappy(op): 8:54pm On Sep 07, 2012 |
Two robbery suspects, Saheed Quadri, 30, who specialises in snatching exotic cars and his accomplice who sells the cars, Taiwo Adisa, 32, have confessed to the police that they had built a hotel and houses from their robbery proceeds. They were arrested recently by men of the Lagos State Police Command of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, at different locations.
SARS sources informed P.M.News that during interrogation, Saheed confessed to being the owner of a three-bedroom flat and Love Garden Hotel at Eyin Ogbe Community in Liadi-Maya area of Ikorodu, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. P.M.News gathered that Saheed was arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State, on his way to Abuja to sell a Honda car which he had stolen about three months ago. Taiwo was arrested at his Abuja residence. After they were arrested, two locally-made pistols and cartridges were recovered from the suspects, our police sources revealed.
Saheed and members of his four-man armed robbery gang reportedly operated on motorcycle, known as Okada and their modus operandi was to hit the bumper of any car they intended to snatch. As the owner of the car tried to know what was happening, they would rob him of the vehicle.
According to SARS sources, the two suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation. The police claimed Saheed admitted he snatched cars such as Honda and Sienna Sports Utility vehicle and Toyota Camry. Saheed told police investigators that he was once a plank seller at Ikorodu. At a period, when his business suffered a set back, two members of the gang now at large known as Stanley and ‘Small’ offered to assist him. They admitted him into their car snatching gang. He said two students called Lekan and Gbolahan introduced the duo to him. In his confessional statement, Taiwo Adisa, who also built a house in Ikorodu but resides in Abuja. admitted that he received and sold vehicles snatched by the gang members.
He stated that his half brother, Jelili Ojedokun, introduced him to the group. Taiwo, who trained as an aluminum worker, said he had bought five vehicles from the group before his arrest. “I bought a Honda car for N650,000 and sold it for N700,000. I bought a Toyota Camry from the group for N500,000 which I Sold for N650,000. Another car I bought from them was sold for N1.1million. I cannot remember the brand of the car now,” Taiwo confessed.
He claimed that one Honda car he bought from the group was still in his possession but the Toyota Sienna SUV was with his mechanic. While efforts were being intensified to track down the fleeing members of the gang, SARS said the suspects would be arraigned in court at the completion of their investigation.http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2012/09/07/suspects-we-built-hotel-with-robbery-proceeds/ |

Idokojimmy: BY CLIFFORD NDUJIHE, SONI DANIEL & HENRY UMORU
…We agree with S-West on six regions — Ohanaeze scribe
LAGOS—NORTHERN leaders, Sunday, spurned Yoruba leaders’ agitation for regional autonomy and a return to the parliamentary system of government, describing the clamour as a recipe for Nigeria’s disintegration.
Yoruba elders under the banner of Yoruba National Assembly, YNA, had after a meeting in Ibadan last Thursday, canvassed a return to the parliamentary system of government and granting of regional autonomy to the South-West.
They also called for removal of the immunity clause for criminal offences; a new Nigeria consisting of a federal government and six regional governments (based on the current six geo-political zones) operating federal and regional constitutions, respectively; and adoption of Regional and State Police force structure among others.
But responding to the development, some prominent northern leaders, who spoke exclusively to Vanguard, kicked against YNA’s call, saying that the agitation would plunge the nation into incalculable crises and hasten her break-up.
However, Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nduka Eya, said the demands of the Yoruba leaders were in tandem with the position of Ndigbo, which had been sent to the National Assembly for inclusion in the on-going constitution amendment exercise.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, said the call for regional autonomy and a return to parliamentary system of government was self-serving and had the semblance of secession.
Kaita said: “I do not really understand what they mean by regional autonomy. They should be bold enough to say that they do not want to be part of Nigeria any longer and stop talking about what does not make sense anymore in the country. “Regional autonomy and parliamentary system of government can no longer serve a complex society like Nigeria and our founding fathers were wise enough to jettison the system and adopt the present Presidential system, which to all intent and purposes, remains the best for a country like ours,” he noted.
According to the founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, neither the granting of autonomy to any region in the country nor a return to parliamentary system of government would solve the socio-political problems of the nation.
Kaita said that all that was needed to make the presidential system more useful was to strengthen the institutions of government to serve the citizens better and reposition the country as a strong, united nation. Adding his voice to the debate, National Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Buba Galadima, described any call for regional autonomy as an invitation to the dissolution of the country.
“If they make the mistake to allow the kind of regional autonomy requested by the Yoruba, it is a recipe for the country’s disintegration because of the kind of politics being played in Nigeria. Our political immaturity would lead to dismembering the country as soon as any region is granted autonomy,” the politician noted.
Galadima warned that the country could disintegrate if urgent steps were not taken to address the growing sense of injustice and marginalisation of sections of the country by the government.
He maintained that demands for autonomy and other issues were borne out of perceived injustice and inability of the administration to provide the basic needs of the people.
It’s retrogressive — Haliru Mohammed In his submission, immediate past Minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed described calls for a return to regional structure as retrogressive.
According to him, states replaced the regions because of demands by ethnic nationalities for self-determination, adding that a u-turn to the old structure would be a repeat of the scenario where major ethnic groups like Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo were in total control of the regions and marginalised other groups.
The former Acting National Chairman of the PDP said rather than advocate regionalism what was required of the country now was to sit down and work out the modus operandi of our federation to accommodate all the ethnic diversities without any section feeling dominated.
His words: “Going back to regional structure is going to be retrogressive because states were created because of the demand by ethnic nationalities for self determination. To go back to regional structure where the major ethnic groups like Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo were in complete control of the regions is dangerous.
“General Yakubu Gowon responded to the demands of the minority groups and created states to allow for some level of self-determination for ethnic nationalities. Going back will make major ethnic groups to continue to dominate the minorities. Now, there is some level of equality between the nationalities regardless of the number and size.
“What Nigeria needs now is to sit down and work out our modus operandi of a federation that would accommodate all our ethnic diversities without one section feeling a sense of domination by others. Federating units should be different ethnic nationalities as we have in states. If there is need for creation of more states like in the case of South-East and also to break some of the larger and more populated states in the North and South, that can be accommodated rather than going back to regions.”
However, a former Senator from Kano State, Usman Kabiru Umar, stated that he would support any political restructuring that would bring about a strong, united and progressive Nigeria, where every citizen would have a sense of belonging. “Now, if they say that autonomy and return to parliamentarism would guarantee the promotion of peace, development and a united Nigeria, so be it,”
Indeed, Eya, who spoke in his personal capacity as a public commentator, said the South-West clamour for six regions was sound.
“Before the Presidential system was introduced, we had four regions. The North accepted the regions and we had Parliamentary system. The presidential system is very expensive; if we continue with it, we will soon go bankrupt. The parliamentary system worked for us. Then, if you did not win an election you cannot become a minister. Now the president appoints ministers from everywhere and they are not accountable to the people.
Noting that Ohanaeze had prepared a document on the constitution amendment, he said: “We agree with the South-West on six regions, which should become the federating units. The Federal Government should have nothing to do with state or local government creation.
“There is constant demands for new states and local governments because the military made them avenues for getting more allocation from the centre. Local governments should be states’ creation; they are not federating units. We stand for equity, fair-play and justice. The military gave North undue advantage and they do not want to relinquish it,” he said.
