A former dogged militant, Friday Igbegbe, has allegedly committed suicide at Ogbe-Ijoh, headquarters of Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Ijaw ex-militant from Ogbe-Ijoh reportedly took his own life through a yet-to-be-ascertained means on Saturday night after a long battle with depression.

Igbegbe, said to be a title holder, reportedly left behind about 36 children and many ‘wives’ many of whom were allegedly not with him during his travails.

A chief from Ogbe-Ijoh community, who spoke with our Correspondent in confidence on Sunday evening, said Igbegbe had been yoked under depression for about a year.

He said the deceased was taken to a rehab centre somewhere in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, sometimes ago, over alleged obsession with drugs.

According to him, Igbegbe, who was supposed to spend six months at the rehab centre, secretly bolted away and returned to his root to continue his addiction.

The source further disclosed that all efforts to rescue him from suicide thoughts were difficult as he eventually took his life on Saturday when he was alone.

“We tried to help him. But the thing had gotten into his system. We took him to somewhere in Ogbomoso for rehab, but he ran away in less than three months.

“He was supposed to spend three months, but ran back home. He killed himself about three months after he left the centre, leaving behind about 36 children.

“It’s a sad event. God knows we tried our best to save him,” the chief lamented.

In his confirmed Facebook handle, fellow comrades across Ijaw land mourned Igbegbe, whom they described as a king-hearted, goal-getting ‘double chief.’

For Comrade Elewei Gbadia, the late former militant left behind a sour taste to swallow.

“So unpalatable to behold! Such an ugly sequence in a space of time Ijaw nation lost two of its ardent believers of the struggle!

“That of Chief Commander Richman Yinbiri, now Chief Igbegbe. He was a humane person and problems solver during his stay on earth.


“He never showed ego irrespective of the numerous influences he had, but resolved to be a man with the people’s heart.

“We will really miss him. May his soul rest in peace. And God console the immediate family to bear this irreparable loss,” he prayed.

Stephen Jenakumo, another mourner, described the loss as colossal to the “ljaw Nation, Niger Delta as a region and Ogbe-ljoh Warri Kingdom. RIP.”

Delta Police Command’s image-maker, DSP Bright Edafe, when contacted, said he was behind the wheels.

Rev. Fr. Mark Chimezie Godfrey, a Catholic priest who was abducted by gunmen in Umuahia, Abia State, has regained his freedom after 10 days in captivity, Reports.

From From The Information Reaching News Desk, Rev Fr Chimezie, a native of Enugu State, was ordained a priest early this year, was abducted at St Theresa’s Parish, along Enyiukwu Road, Ohokobe Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area on October 13.

The Catholic Diocese of Umuahia announced the release of the priest in a statement on Saturday, October 23, Learnt.

The statement signed by the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia, Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, said Rev Fr Chimezie was released unhurt.

Bishop Ugorji also expressed his deep gratitude to all bishops, priests, consecrated men and women as well as all Christian faithful who assisted in prayers during the difficult and trying period the priest was in captivity.

The statement did not reveal if any ransom was paid before the priest regained his freedom.

World 200 metres bronze medallist, Alex Quinonez has been killed in Ecuador, his home country.

The 32-year-old finished third at the World Championships in Doha two years ago to become the first Ecuadorian athlete to win a global medal in a track event.

According to the BBC, Quinonez was shot along with another person outside a shopping centre in the city of Guayaquil on Friday night October 22.

The Ecuadorian sports ministry announced the news in a statement on its Twitter feed, saying: 'Today we lost a great athlete, a person who made us dream, who made us excited.'

'The National Police are at the scene and the authorities are conducting the corresponding investigations. He will forever remain in the hearts of all Ecuadorians,' it added.

Ecuador's president Guillermo Lasso tweeted: 'We are very sorry for the painful loss of Alex Quinonez, father, son, a great sprinter who marked the sport. Our sincerest condolences to your loved ones. Rest in peace. Those who take the lives of Ecuadorians will not go unpunished. We will act forcefully.'

Ecuador's Olympic Committee said in a statement that the circumstances surrounding the death had 'not yet been clarified'.

Quinonez qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games but did not compete after being suspended for breaching the whereabouts rules.

News of the sprinter's death came on the same day as the funeral of Kenyan distance star Agnes Tirop, who was killed earlier this month

Ten people including three members of a family have lost their lives in an auto crash along Jebba-Bode Saadu in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State, Reports.

It was gathered by , that the crash which occurred around 4:00 pm, on Sunday, October 17, at Onipako village involved two vehicles.

The vehicles involved in the fatal accident are red colour Toyota Corolla car with registration number AAA 250 CB and an ash colour commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LAP 179 XA, Reports.

According to the Kwara State sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jonathan Owoade, there were 26 people involved in the accident: 20 males and six females.

He said that all the six females involved in the crash died while 15 people, all males, suffered varying degrees of fracture and others.

The FRSC boss said that the corpses had been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin, adding that the injured were taken to Jebba Medical Centre and Emmanuel Hospital, Jebba.

The victims of the road carnage were residents of the Okelele community in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state.

Three of them were members of Babaladifa Sauta family. Among the trio were two wives of one Alhaji Babaladiffa.

Meanwhile, the Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, on Monday, paid a condolence visit to the families of the victims.

The governor was accompanied on the visit by the Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistant on Strategy, Security and Religion; Alh Saadu Salahu, Alh Ibrahim Danmaigoro and Alh Muyideen Aliyu respectfully as well as member, representing Ilorin East in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Amuda Jimoh.

The Special Adviser on Religion, Danmaigoro said the governor was moved by the plights of the bereaved, adding that: “This is why the governor defied the rain and within short notice come down to commiserate with his people who are bereaved.”

He prayed to God to comfort the bereaved and repose the souls of the deceased.

The governor’s team was received by Alh Saheed Sauta Adifa.

Responding on behalf of the Sauta family, Alh Abdullahi Olesin thanked the governor for finding time out of his tight schedule to visit and commiserate with the bereaved families, adding that the bereaved were comforted by the governor’s visit.
