The gang of numbering about four reportedly waylaid the chairman along the Otuasega-Okaki road and barricaded his official vehicle. The Nation gathered that the abductors dragged him out of his vehicle at gunpoint and took him to Okarki in neighbouring Rivers State. They reportedly whisked him away in a waiting speedboat. The police orderly attached to the chairman came down from the vehicle fuming over the blockade. “But on sighting heavy arms and on hearing the volley of gunshots released towards the vehicle, he scampered for safety, abandoned his principal and ran away. “The armed men dragged the council Chairman from his vehicle and transferred him into a blue colored Mazda. They drove him away towards the waterside. “At the waterside, he was taken to a waiting speedboat. The driver of the Blue Mazda was shot in the leg for refusing to follow the gunmen and their victim into the waiting speedboat. “The Mazda was later set ablaze by the armed men along the waterside and the number plate taken away.” Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Asinim Butswat Astimin, said preliminary report showed that the abducted Chairman was ferried by his abductors towards the Abua waterways in Rivers State. “Our men have been placed on red alert and we have put measures in place to rescue him,” he said. The Federal Government on Wednesday changed its mind on the earlier plan for President Goodluck Jonathan to formally hand- over power to the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on May 28 as against the May 29 Democracy Day. Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, had last week said Jonathan intended to have the formal handing over done on May 28 so that the administration can reserve May 29 for the incoming government. That announcement triggered controversy with some arguing that the plan would lead to a vacuum in the leadership of the country till when Buhari is inaugurated 24 hours after the handing over. But while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Jonathan on Wednesday, Akwashiki retracted her earlier disclosure, Punch reports. READ ALSO: Akinwumi Adeshina Deletes His Anti-Buhari Tweets The minister, who said the meeting again centred on the transition programme, denied ever telling reporters that the President would hand-over to the President-elect on May 28. She claimed that what she said was that the process of preparing handover notes would be completed by May 28. She explained that Jonathan will not hand over power until May 29. She said, “In the council today, the discussion was still centred on transition. “I have to make a little clarification because some people thought I said May 28 will be handover date. I never said that. “I said May 28 will be the last day that we will have our handing over briefs by ministries and parastatals. I said from the 28th of this month to that date has been given to departments and ministries to submit their hand over notes. “I remember somebody asked if there will be no vacuum if there is handover on May 28 and I replied that there will be no handing over on May 28. “Handing over and inauguration will hold on May 29. The President is not handing over power on May 28, he is handing over power on May 29. “We have started the transition and it is ongoing. We are submitting our handover notes to the Office of the SGF. “The President is still the President until May 29 when Gen. Buhari takes his oath of office and resumes as the President of the Federal Republic.” READ ALSO: Plaintiffs Seeking To Stop Buhari Make U-Turn When asked to disclose the reason behind the Tuesday sacking of Mr. Suleiman Abba as the Inspector-General of Police, Akwashiki said she had no explanation to make because the President had the right to appoint and fire his appointees. “I think it is within the President’s power to appoint and sack and he did what he had to do,” she said. Akwashiki last week said that, President Jonathan will hand over to General Buhari at a dinner on the eve of the May 29 Democracy Day www.naij.com/426023-just-in-fg-reverts-on-handover-date.html |

Editor’s Note: Architect Ola Oduwole, a former President of the Egbe Omo Yoruba in the United States of America and member of the All Progressives Congress thinks Nigeria’s President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has a lot of job to do especially as it relates to Nigeria’s business climate. In this interview with Naij.com, Oduwole goes into details about how Buhari can take good advantage of his new post. Now that you are based in Nigeria, what is the relationship between you and the Yoruba in diaspora group you once led like? Well, I still communicate with my president, so we are still relating. I know all their activities, being in Nigeria does not exclude me. Remember I was once a president of that organisation, I can’t just leave it like that and say I am not concerned. Whatever they do I am with them, and I am supporting them, more so that the current president, Bode Omodele, we talk and we exchange ideas, so we still relate. What would you say about the misbehaviour of a former minister Godsday Urubebe at the collation center for presidential poll result in Abuja? The whole world was watching the show that he put up. Being a Nigerian, it is a disgrace to all Nigerians. His attitude, actions, behaviour, it is a disgrace. But I think he was handled very well. Whether it was a script he was playing, or whether it was an spontaneous reaction, but it was just too bad. That shows the kind of people that have been in the helms of affairs of this country, that tells you the kind of government we have. It is a disgrace to his family and you can imagine how his children will feel among their peers. READ ALSO : Former Governor Warns Buhari Against Defectors Why do you think Nigerians rejected President Jonathan and PDP at the polls? A lot of factors, number one, impunity. They believe they are ruling not governing, so whatever they do no one can challenge them, so they do it with impunity. They corrupt every section of the arms of government, be it legislature, executive, judiciary, everywhere is being corrupted. Corruption is unprecedented, its like it has been institutionalised across the board, everywhere, there is nothing you can do in this country without bribery, everywhere and anywhere, you can’t do anything without bribe. Then power, they talk to people anyhow, nepotism; it is just too much and people are fed up. And I hope we have a new deal, the change that we have been yearning for where things can be straightened out, we have the discipline, integrity etc. There are a million and one reasons why the people rejected them; unemployment, insecurity, light, you name it, its numerous. How would you assess Professor Jega and INEC’s performance so far, especially in the presidential/national assembly elections? All in all, I think Prof. Jega has tried, he has done his best. But to me I don’t think his best is good enough for the country. But he has improved tremendously on what we had in the past. I hope whoever takes over from him can do better because there are still some lapses. Take the issue of PVC, why must it take them four years to produce PVCs, some people have not gotten theirs uptil today. There is no rocket science about all these things. In US for instance, you get your voters card the very day you register, you can even change your residential address and it is done immediately. You can do all this things through the internet and you get your new card through the mail. However, having said that, considering the usual Nigerian factor, where some people deliberately try to sabotage others effort, this things do happen. But there must be an immediate way of changing polling units when you move to another location so that you can vote. There should be continuous registration exercise, not waiting for another four years and collection of PVCs should also be a continuous exercise. As a professional businessman, what would be your advice to the new government or what areas would you want the government to concentrate on? I think the number one thing apart from say stop corruption, is electricity. If electricity can be put in place, there will be a lot of small businesses, cottage industries and that is what drives the economy, the middle class people drive the economy. So, number one is how to generate electricity; it should be liberalised, even if local governments can generate electricity, let them do it, even individual companies can do it. Then plug all the holes for corruption, as many as possible; infrastructure, distribution of wealth, doesn’t concentrate all the components of a contract in one person or organisation, this will distribute wealth. This nation is very rich, only we have a lot of greedy people, hopefully we will continue to change. With the new president coming in, I am very hopeful for this nation. He is a man of integrity, not corrupt, serious minded etc, even the vice president-elect, Osinbajo has sound antecedents. You are very passionate about South West integration, do you still see it possible with Governors Mimiko and Fayose pulling the region to an opposite direction? Well, I think am more hopeful now than before and the reason is that majority of the states in the South West are under APC. Our two obstacles have been eliminated too, because now I believe they will stop all those impunity because of the new government. And the integration of the South West may be easier than before, and I hope the president can use the geo-political zones to develop this country so that they will have a common thing they share together. READ ALSO : Okonjo-Iweala Is To Blame For Nigeria’s Financial Situation – Buhari You are a businessman and a politician, what is your political ambition? I just have passion for politics and people. I have been in politics right from my very young age. As far back as 1978, I was there when they launched UPN at Tafawa Balewa Square. So, I just love politics, it has nothing to do with my profession. I love to see that the right thing is done. Anywhere I can serve the nation and people, it is fine with me; I don’t have any specific political ambition. I believe God is in charge of everything, if God says he is going to use me anywhere I will serve. I am a professional, politics to me is not a do or die affair. And I hope the new governments at all levels in this country will be able to make use of people that are technocrats and have knowledge of politics. A lot of Nigerians are expecting a miracle from the incoming government, but considering the current economic situation, do you see Gen. Buhari meeting the peoples expectation? People’s expectations are different, and there are a lot of expectations out there, however, it is going to be difficult to meet all expectations. But I can understand because of the deep knowledge and understanding of what has transpired in this country, how bad the economy is. So we have to rebuild from ground zero. I have no doubt that Buhari and the APC government will perform. I believe we cannot go down further than where we are now. Though things might not move as fast as people think, but with patience and if they can be patient with the PDP government for 16 years, Nigerians will have to be patient with the new government and give it support to benefit all Nigerians not a section of the country. www.naij.com/420811-how-buhari-can-make-nigeria-a-business-hub.html |
