Good day esteemed nairalanders. Bosses in the house, I have noticed that all borderless payment websites only cater to people abroad trying to send money to Nigeria but none caters to the hundreds of thousands if not millions of businesses/individuals who would also like to send money directly to friends, family and suppliers abroad. Esteemed nairalanders, please advise on how to send money safely and efficiently to family and businesses in Dubai and Malaysia. So far, I have only found the following options: 1. Domiciliary account: A costly and not so efficient option. First, I need to open a domiciliary account in Nigeria and the unfriendly bank policies. Also, the difficulty in funding dom accounts and at exorbitant rates. Not to forget, the poor exchange rate of receiving local bank, intermediary bank fees, senders fees and having to pay in USD when the local currency I actually need sent is AED/MYR. 2. PayPal: The so called Nigerian PayPal that's supposed to be able to send money abroad relies on the usd supported Nigerian cards to even work. And there's a 100usd limit on these cards (that's if they work). Plus, PayPal is a great pain in the ass. From sudden account limitations, to poor exchange rates and too many risks. 3. Western Union/Moneygram: My research so far shows that both do not support OMT(outbound money transfer) from Nigeria. And even if they do, they charge outrageous fees and very poor conversion rate. Not to forget, the FG policy of not allowing more than 1k usd per quarter. 4. Crypto: Crypto still hasn't solved the problem of easy FIAT to FIAT transfer. Unlike in Nigeria, most if not all countries in Asia have a strict anti-crypto policies such that you can't literally withdraw to bank from your wallet. Transaction refrences cannot contain crypto related words. You have to rely on P2P sale of your coins which is not efficient and totally time wasting and costly. 5. BDC dealer based abroad: This is another option I found but I have heard some scary stories of how these mallams/dealers can literally disappear and refuse to pay your family/supplier abroad after receiving your money in naira equivalent. I'll be reading your advice in the comment section. Thank you. |
I opened an account with alat by Wema because I read a nairalander comment about the app. It is supposed to be a 100% digital bank and you dont need to open it physically. Little did i know my life would turn into a nightmare and i would be making complaints every day since then. I provided my bvn, contact details, identification, personal details etc. Though I experienced error response many times while at it. I wish I had stopped there. After the account was set up I proceeded to fund the account, The first issue i faced was the app telling me insufficient funds when I actually had 6500 in the balance. I gnored it and went on with my life. I ordered the card and laterthey blocked my account. Initially the app said they are "verifying" my details and restrictions will be lifted in 2 days but I noticed that the website and the app are both configured not to accept your ID. I uploaded National ID and Voters card at different times (Over 40 times but it always come back empty). I contacted them on twitter after much rubbish they said i should call customer care. Their customer care line is not free but i took pains to load airtime just for that purpose but they keep you waiting up to an hour till airtime runs out. I sent them several mails but no reply. I decided to physically visit the bank but their only branch and they were telling me to keep using the app to upload document. They said they can't collect my ID and verify for me. Every single day i complain they'll tell me to exercise patience. This has been going on for a month now. ALAT BY WEMA IS FRAUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT TELLS YOU OTHERWISE. They're all promoting the app for referral. Just go to their twitter, Instagram and plystore reviews and see what people are saying!!!!! Please, well meaning Nigerians should come to my rescue. @lalasticlala @seun @naijacutee @FOD @Puskin @Dominique

FunnyDude:lol. I can totally relate. Freelancing is the best thing that happened to me. Over 2years now and my life has never remained the same. It irks me when I hear Nigerian youths complaining about unemployment/underemployment. Cos that one na wailing in the ears of freelancers. But there are not so many good teachers. The ones making money are too busy to be coming online looking for who to sell ebook or video courses to. Plus Nigerians are too lazy, I'm sorry. To mark my one year freelancing, I organized whatsapp tutorial last year for people to learn fiverr even people who complained of having no skills at all. Of all of them, only one guy took action, and now we are best of the best of friends cos he's making cool cash. I went off freelancing for a while now and resumed july 6th of this month. $405 made so far doing the easiest jobs on fiverr. Now, that's 147k made in 10days minus 20% fiverr commission, that's 116k made in 10days lol. Making banker's salary in 10day all in the comfort of my room. But I know some guys doing way better than me by offering gigs in web, whiteboard animation and tech. One of them just bought a new house. Guy in his mid 20s lol. Even though, I have now diverted into ecommerce biz, There's still nothing as sweet as freelancing my brother. Boss LIFE! ![]() |

Lol. I was a victim of format 1 in 2010. That's why I could write well on it. After I dropped my 9k and Nokia. I got home and I just couldn't bring myself to carry all my mum's money. I knew it would kill her if anything happens cos I've seen her react to a missing 50k before that day, let alone missing millions. They kept calling my line but I hanged up. I read other formats on the news over the years, and it's all the same content. I got very emotional when I read on fp today that a guy's girlfriend was raped by these people. That's the reason for my outburst. Psoul: |
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE POPULAR SCAM HAPPENING NOW IN NIGERIA. I AM ANGRY!!! Yes I am very angry! Every time, we read on whatsapp that Boko Haram injected 100,000 apples and oranges with HIV but people hardly circulate the REAL scams going on in Nigeria. There is a very popular scam that has been around for over 10years now and no one is talking about it. 10years ago, I was almost a victim myself at oshodi Lagos, and trust me, it can happen to anybody. This morning, I read the news about a girl that was raped and robbed in lagos by these men. I have read similar news that happened in other states and people often blame it on jazz or think that these people are kidnappers! No! It is not charm. I'll explain. This scam usually involve two people: A man who claims to be a foreigner(black) or he'll ask you for directions to an herbal center or hospital nearby. The second man who pretends to be a good Samaritan will later approach both of you. These are the 3 formats they usually use: FORMAT 1: The man (foreigner) will tell you that he lost all his goods to area boys, and now he needs transport fare to go to his sister's place where he kept all the remaining imported goods(iphones, gold chains, laptops etc). Now if you give him money or not, a guy will approach you to ask you what the 'mad' man was saying. Then after you explain, the second man would give the foreigner money too. Then the foreigner will ask both of you to follow him that he will give you free iPhone each. The second guy will be the one convincing you that you should both follow him. Once you follow them, you have been trapped. Now you are happy to get free iPhone for your good Samaritan. When you get to his sister's place, you'll see plenty paper on the floor and he will turn one of the paper to 1000naira after washing it with one Central Bank chemical. The man will tell you that it's a secret that big men and central bank produce money by washing papers with chemical and that he wants to bless you with the secret CBN chemical to turn any paper to money. Now you are happy again. Then he will tell you that he has the CBN chemical that you should give him money for the chemical. Don't forget that the second man is with you. He knows what is going on but he will be acting as if he's very happy that both of you are going to make millions for helping the foreigner. Then they will bring a pastor or Alfa to make an oath between all of you to keep it a secret. If you're a woman, all of them will ask that they sleep with you to complete the oath. You'll agree because you are scared that they have metaphysical powers. But it's all lies. The pastor or Alfa can perform simple magic like making smoke come out of his hand or making saliva come out of your hands. Don't be deceived, the second guy has touched your hand with something that makes foamy liquid. They do this so that you'll believe them. Then they will ask you to go and bring all the money and gold in your house to buy the chemical. That's how you'll go back and empty your account or steal all your parents' gold and money in the house. Afterall, you'll make everything back with the magic chemical. FORMAT 2: There's no much difference. The man can ask you where herbal center is, that he has a powerful egg to sell to the herbal doctor that owns the herbal center. Each egg will turn to 10million naira. Then the second guy will approach you to ask what's going on. Then he will convince you to follow them to the herbal center. When you get there, the herbalist will put the egg with paper inside bucket of water and change it to 1000naira. Then they'll ask you to go and bring all your money to buy 20 eggs each. It's all the same format. FORMAT 3: This usually happen in a bus. The man will sit at the back with a Ghana-must-go bag, and the driver will be asking him what's inside the bag. The man will not talk. Then the driver will say he knows that money is inside. Then the driver will threaten him to share the money between all of you. If you are inside the bus, the driver will park and open the bag. Then you'll see plenty dollars(fake prints) inside the bag. Now they will tell you they have to take an oath to keep it a secret, and nobody should tell the police. Then they will tell you to go and bring all your money to wash the charm on the money because they stole it from one powerful politician. After giving them your money. These people will disappear. And your eyes will clear. You'll think it's jazz but it's not jazz. Good day everyone. I want to inform you all about the latest scam operated by Airtel Network. Last night, I was trying to subscribe for night browsing plan, when I received a message that I needed to migrate to smart-trybe plan, being my first time. I checked my balance and I saw that i had #70. So I decided to browse about airtel migration charges to be sure I won't be charged for the migration. And I read on airtel website that first time migration in each month is free. I successfully migrated to smart trybe plan and proceeded to subscribe for the night data plan only to receive a message that my balance was insufficient. Then, I checked my balance and I saw that I still have #70. I tried calling with the airtime and it says that I have no airtime. I was confused, so I decided to call customer care. My people, I was informed that my airtime is zero because the airtime I had before migrating to another plan would become zero due to terms and condition. My God! I was sweating, for someone that just recharged #1500 3days ago. I asked the agent, what if I had #5000 airtime on my balance before migrating to another Tarrif plan. He said it'll become zero. That was when I lost it! When did migrating to another Tarrif plan become a crime o? I'm going to report them to NCC. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ZERO AIRTIME BEFORE MIGRATING TO ANOTHER TARRIF PLAN ON AIRTEL. AIRTEL NETWORK IS A BIG SCAM. PLEASE BE WARNED!
