A fire inferno saw three children narrowly escaped death when fire razed a 4-bedroom apartment in Ebe, Umuokpu Awka in Awka South local government area of Anambra state, Brainnews report.

According to the The Nation, the kids, who were fast asleep when the incident occurred, were reportedly rescued by a 17-year old girl, Chinenye Igwedimma, said to be a cousin to the family.

The building located at No. 1 Ezingwu Street belonging to the family of staff of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awka, Blessing Uchendu, reportedly went up in flames while the occupants were away.

Property worth millions of naira, including academic certificates, were completely razed by the fire which engulfed the entire building, The Nation gathered.

Residents and sympathisers said the fire was caused by electrical malfunction as it started shortly after electricity was restored.

Narrating her ordeal, the rescuer, Igwedimma, said she had returned to the house to perform some chores when she met the roof of the building in flames.

“My first action was to pull out three kids who were sleeping in the already burning house.

“I quickly raised alarm for help as I was overwhelmed while trying to salvage few other items,” she said.

On her part, Blessing Uchendu, said she was at the ABS Corporate Headquarters when she got a call that the house was on flames.

She lamented; “I quickly rushed home only to find out that everything, including my academic certificate from primary school to university levels had been destroyed in the inferno.”

The eldest daughter of the family, Mrs. Uchenna Mmuo, said she was busy at her shop when she was alerted.

She appealed to government and spirited individuals to assist the family.

The fire was put off by a combined team of the Anambra State Fire Service, and good-hearted residents of the area, The Nation further learnt.

Deputy President General, Umuokpu Town Union, Mr Chika Nwuzor and Principal Fire Superintendent of the State Fire Service, Mr Emmanuel Nze, said it was difficult to trace the cause of the fire as no adult was at home when it began.

Handsome Nigerian soldier identified as Femi has been killed by Boko Haram in Borno.

His friend shared his news on Facebook and many Nigerians have showered him with condolence messages.

The post read; “With sadness and tears running all over our eyes we announce the death of our comrade and Gallant soldier SGT Femi who is serving in super camp monguno he passed away in Boko Haram ambush may his soul rest in peace.”

The goodlooking soldier who kept beards was described as a valiant young man who was dedicated to his duty of protecting the territorial integrity of Nigeria. More Nigerian soldiers have been killed in recent times despite claims by the Federal Government that the Boko Haram sect has been defeated.

A protester has been reportedly killed while protesting at the Circle Mall, Jakande, in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the protester was reportedly shot dead by men of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to Punch, a police van was set ablaze by an angry mob that stormed the mall.

A video posted on Twitter and confirmed by some residents showed a body on the floor as gunshots rent the air. Another video showed a police van burning.

A third clip filmed by a motorist showed a man masked with a handkerchief wielding a cutlass.

“What is happening? Why are all these boys doing like this? Are they fighting the police or Shoprite?” the motorist said.

An actress, Belindah Effah, who was caught in the fracas, claimed that hoodlums had hijacked the protest.

She added that the men had been attacking motorists and called for government’s help.

She wrote on Twitter; “Jakande area is very unsafe right now; Area boys everywhere. Everyone ran and left their cars just now. As I was about to run out, the boys carrying machetes and stones told me it’s not me they are after, they are looking for South Africans to kill . These same boys vandalised some cars. I saw one of them stone a car and broke the windshield. After a while, they came to our car and asked for some money. They have blocked the Jakande Road and passengers are so afraid. Nigerian government please come to our aid.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised the alarm over its findings that some internet fraudsters had funded some politicians into elective positions.

The agency also vowed to release names of such politicians and their internet scammer sponsors, the Punch report.

The Zonal Head of EFCC, Port Harcourt Zone, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, disclosed this on Tuesday in Port Harcourt while speaking with newsmen on the anti-graft agency’s collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the fight against internet fraud.

Bawa lamented that cyber crime was tarnishing Nigeria’s image and killing genuine businesses, adding that the agency will soon make public names of suspected cyber criminals and the candidates they sponsored to contest public offices.

He stated that such publication would be done at the end of its ongoing thorough investigation.

He disclosed that the EFCC in Port Harcourt zone had arrested 105 cyber crime suspects, and had also secured 32 convictions of fraudsters in the last eight months.

The EFCC in the zone had also secured the conviction of 149 oil thieves between January and August, Bawa said.

Explaining that the commission has been working on 13 suspected internet fraudsters on FBI’s watch list, Bawa added that one Ogbonnah Atoukaritou, who was formerly based in London; and one Chidi Egbeonu, formerly based in Japan, were currently in EFCC net.

Bawa further disclosed; “The last eight months have been months of intensive and extensive investigations and prosecution of oil-related and several internet-related cases in which the zone has recorded 149 convictions, recovered N268,934,375.75, $2,012,568.00 and 15,000.00 euros; with 162 cases pending in court.”

A development which has caused some stir reveals that the deputy registrar of the University of Calabar has been kidnapped.

The Deputy Registrar (College of Medicine), University of Calabar, Mrs Hannah Oboho, has allegedly been kidnapped, Punch Metro report.

Sources said Oboho was kidnapped from her home in the early hours of Saturday.

Details of the incident were sketchy as of the time of filing this report.

When contacted on Sunday, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Effiong Eyo, said he was just returning from a trip and had been informed of the incident through a text message sent by the victim’s son.

Eyo stated in a text message sent to Punch Metro; “I just came into town. I will see the Chief Security Officer tomorrow (Monday). I only learnt from a text sent by the son that she was kidnapped from her home.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Austin Agbonlahor, told our correspondent on the telephone, “We are doing something about it,” adding that kidnapping was a sensitive issue and it was not every strategy of the police that had to be disclosed.

Explosions have been reported to have rocked the residences of two members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yenagoa at the weekend, Brainnews report.

Both explosions have been reported to the Commissioner of Police and the state Director of the Department of State Services in Yenagoa.

It was gathered that some suspected thugs working for one of the governorship aspirants outside the PDP Restoration Team threw dynamites into the houses of Oforji Oboku, a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly representing Yenagoa Constituency One, and Victor Isaiah, the chairman of Brass Local Government Area.

According to report, the two residences were attacked early on Saturday evening by the suspected thugs whose services were procured by an aspirant who disagreed with the outcomes of the party delegates’ elections.

Both explosions have been reported to the Commissioner of Police and the state Director of the Department of State Services in Yenagoa.

Confirming the incident, Isaiah said the one that happened in his residence was reported to the police and the DSS.

According to him, the state Director of the DSS and the Commissioner of Police visited his house to confirm what actually happened.

Isaiah explained that his younger brother who was in the house during the incident said that he saw three boys around the house who made a suspicious call to confirm if the residents were in the house or not.

According to him, the explosion occurred about ten minutes after the call.

There had been fears that some aspirants who lost out in the party’s congresses could take steps to thwart the exercise as their chances of securing the governorship ticket had become very slim.

Report reaching Brainnews has it that the head of Catholic Church, Pope Francis has been rescued by firefighters after he got stuck in an elevator for 25 minutes, ahead of his weekly address on Sunday.

According to CNN, the Pope began his Sunday Angelus by apologizing for arriving several minutes late to the noon audience. He asked the crowd to applaud his rescuers before continuing with the weekly blessings.

Addressing the crowd, he explained: “Dear brothers and sisters, good morning. First of all, I have to apologise for being late but I had an unexpected event, I have been stuck in an elevator for 25 minutes.”

The Pope said that there was “a drop in voltage,” and that the elevator stopped, NAN revealed.

“Thank goodness, the firemen arrived, and I thank them so much, and after 25 minutes of work they managed to get it started again,” he said.

“A round of applause for the firefighters!” he added.

The CEO and co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey’s account on the platform has been hacked by hackers.

The co-founder and chief executive of Twitter had his own account on the service briefly taken over by hackers.

According to the BBC, a group referring to itself as the Chuckling Squad said it was behind the breach of Jack Dorsey’s account.

The profile, which has more than four million followers, tweeted out a flurry of highly offensive and racist remarks for about 15 minutes.

Twitter said its own systems were not compromised, instead blaming an unnamed mobile operator.

Twitter said in a statement; “The phone number associated with the account was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider.”

“This allowed an unauthorised person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number. That issue is now resolved.”

Again, the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed the governorship primary in Bayelsa State to Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is the second time the party is changing the date. It had earlier fixed Saturday, August 30, for the primary after the initial postponement from August 29.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement on Friday, said the change of date was due to a court order.

The statement said; “In deference to a court order, the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress has shifted the date for the Bayelsa governorship primary till Tuesday and Wednesday, September 3 and 4, 2019.”

A TV channel, NBS has revealed that Uganda needs about 240 units of condoms in a year but have only 132 units available this year.

According to the report, Uganda may just be having an increased number of HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases related cases after a report revealed that the East African nation is running short in the availability of condoms.

Although the country’s ministry of health is denying it, people cannot get condoms easily when they need it.

The scarcity results from the withdrawal of donor aid funding to the sector.
