BOTH BLACK AND WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN MERCENARIES ARE FACING ARREST ON THEIR WAY BACK HOME.[b] JOHANNESBURG ( AA) – South African mercenaries fighting the Boko Haram militant group in Nigeria could face arrest when they return home, experts have warned. “What they are doing is illegal under South African law,” Jakkie Cilliers, executive director of the Institute for Security Studies, told The Anadolu Agency on Friday. He said South Africa’s Foreign Military Assistance Act prohibited South African citizens from engaging in combat activities abroad. “The reason why Nigeria employed these South Africans is because they were successful in fighting in Angola against UNITA and in Sierra Leone against the RUF,” he said in reference to two African rebel groups. Cilliers said that most of the mercenaries had previously served in the South African Defense Force during the apartheid era. “There are both black and white mercenaries,” he said when asked by AA about the mercenaries’ backgrounds. The media has reported that hundreds of mercenaries from South Africa and other countries were fighting alongside Nigerian forces against Boko Haram militants. The reports, some of which quoted senior regional officials in West Africa, claimed that the mercenaries – with the use of attack helicopters and armored personnel carriers – were currently fighting to retake towns and villages captured by the militant group. Recent media reports have also quoted South African Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa- Nqakula as saying that South Africans helping the Nigerian army against Boko Haram should we arrested upon their return home.
-Denial-
Asked if he thought that the mercenaries’ activities could put South Africans at risk of attacks by militant groups, Cilliers said, “I don’t think so.” “The government has strongly condemned them; they are there on their own,” he said. Meanwhile, the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) reiterated on Friday that it did not have any troops in West Africa. “The South African government has not sent anybody to Nigeria. There are no South African troops anywhere in West Africa,” SANDF Head of Communications Siphiwe Dlamni told AA. “These people [mercenaries] are not our responsibility. We deal with uniformed people in the SANDF,” he said. Dlamni added that they would be prosecuted if they were found to have broken any South African laws. In the past, former South African soldiers who had served under the country’s former apartheid regime have been accused of working as mercenaries in different parts of the world. Earlier Friday, the Nigerian authorities denied reports that mercenaries were helping army troops in their fight against Boko Haram. © 2015, Hassan Isilow. [b] LONDON (Reuters) - Foreign private security personnel from South Africa, Russia and South Korea are on the ground in northeast Nigeria to train Nigerian troops and are not engaged in frontline combat against Boko Haram, the government said on Tuesday.
According to security and diplomatic sources, Nigeria has brought in hundreds of mercenaries to give its offensive against the Islamist militant group a shot in the arm ahead of the March 28 presidential elections.
But government spokesman Mike Omeri said foreigners on the ground were only engaged in training Nigerian troops.
"There are trainers on the ground to assist in the handling of equipment," Omeri told Reuters on the sidelines of a news conference in London. "They simulate, they teach. These are the things they do."
Asked if they were directly involved in fighting, he said: "I am not aware of that."
Africa's most populous nation and top energy producer has been plagued by the Boko Haram insurgency since 2009, when insurgents intensified efforts to establish an Islamic caliphate in the northeastern Borno state.
However, this year Nigeria and its neighbors have launched a series of offensives to recapture territory, turning the tide against Boko Haram in the run-up to the hotly contested presidential poll.
Omeri would not confirm how many foreigners were involved but said they had come from the same countries that had provided military equipment. He cited South Africa, Russia and South Korea.
"Acquisition of recruitment and military hardware is done through a number of processes. There are government-to-government exchanges and there are those who also come through contractors," he said.
The contractors' stay in Nigeria would end when local troops had become proficient at handling the equipment, he added.
"This is training on site and maybe this is why the people on the ground have been described as mercenaries."
He declined to predict how long it would take for the military to regain full control.
"We have started the final onslaught," he said. "This is the road to the finish and we are on it already."

agaugust: How many SANDF men fired R4 rifle in C.A.R Bangui? You had about 300 men and the special forces refused to fire a single shot, they were the fastest to escape to the airport while your confused Paratroops ran from behind sticking out their tongues like water lapping dogs escaping from Seleka Bush hunters . R4 has been fired in Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, DRC, Burundi, CAR, etc. |

DieVluit: It is in fact Nigeria that cannot afford much. Like @Msauza and I were discussing earlier, the current purchases are forced and haphazard. They aren't really in line with a planned budget. Hence the pain below. Nigeria is simply studying during the exam right now because the neglected their studies all semester.
http://www.ventures-africa.com/2015/03/nigeria-orders-30-salary-cut-for-government-officials/
VENTURES AFRICA – Pressed by oil price fall in the last year, Nigeria has sought out extensive austerity measures to curb the adverse effects of lower oil revenues in the coming years by hiking taxes and cutting spend. The latest of these austerity moves, however, is targeted at slashing the spend of the ruling elite, as President Goodluck Jonathan orders a 30 percent cut to government officials’ welfare packages.
The cut will affect the President himself, his ministerial appointees, and head of government agencies and parastatals. “Political office holders’ salaries are being cut by between 20-30 per cent, ranging from permanent secretaries, directors’ general and so on all the way to ministers,” said Dr. Bright Okogu, who spoke to The Guardian newspaper over the weekend. “This, however, does not amount to very much, but the purpose is to show the commitment of this administration that if they want to make adjustment, they want to do it and lead by.”
The successful implementation, however, might be stalled by ‘due process’. “there is a new twist over the pay cut initiative by the President yesterday as a dependable source at the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC) told The Guardian that the President lacks the power to implement a pay cut unilaterally without the Commission’s approval,” read The Guardian report.
Former Nigerian president, the late Umaru Musa Y’Ardua, had previously attempted to ply such route in the face of a similar oil crisis just after assuming leadership in 2007. His strides were delayed by bureaucratic protocols, and eventually never materialised.
Nigeria’s fate as an economic table-topper had been put in jeopardy over the last year as its cash cow, oil, has lost more than 50 percent in price value, falling to an all-time low of $43 per barrel in January, 2015. Though it has longed picked up momentum to stabilize around $55 a barrel in recent weeks. This has put a strain on the country’s revenue inflow, forcing the government to twice review its budget benchmark, which is hinged on the global price of oil, downwards.
Its Finance Ministry, headed by renowned economist, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had hinted in February that Nigerians may be required to pay more in taxes, as effect of oil price fall hit hard. Odilim Enweagabra, a Nigerian development economist and social commentator, has even canvassed the need to return to the era of tolled highways in a bid to soften the burden on the government.
Locals though will feel much more willing to accept a tougher policies going forward should they perceive the government as willing to share in a similar plight. SA has 3× more revenues than Nigeria, but is considered to be poor by Henry. This is utter hypocrisy indeed. |

agaugust: When did Nigeria buy this REVA MRAP ? . Dummy, Remember when that former SA special force started establishing a mercenary company in your country with headquarters in Lagos, he started giving advices to your military concerning their procurements et al. He paved the way for the number of SA mercenaries who would later be transported to Nigeria. Have you even asked yourself why your money that was meant to buy weapons is still languishing in SA? |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Msauza(m): 8:59am On Mar 17, 2015 |
agaugust: Actually, we turned a few of them to casual labour mechanics, that's the best offer they qualify for here in Nigeria, basic mechanics.
Russia has more mercenaries than South Africa after Mujahedin war in Afghanistan.
Most of the ex-SADF are now aged between 50 to 70 years for those still alive, they have passed their prime. Many of the ones alive are sick, disbaled and on wheel chair or poor health and cannot go to war again for ever.
The whole SADF army in Bush war that has experience was only 4,000 men. A lot of them died or got disabled in battle. Most of the 4,000 SADF troops were just regulars, not special forces of any kind.
So where did you get 10,000 South African mercenaries all ex-soldiers with war experience?
Citation needed . You are in fact only disgracing yourself by ever reducing SA mercenaries to mechanics, the world does not believe your propaganda. The world knows the history of LEON LOTZ, a mentor and military adviser. The wife and son told the world the truth. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/sa-mercenaries-in-nigeria-apartheid-era-veterans-still-finding-work/YOU WILL NOT FOOL THE WORLD. Nigeria will no way ever import mechanic only to be paid more twice the salary of Jonathan. Man stop making a fool of yourself. Leon Lots with the wife and son.

Could you show us photo of South African mercenaries in Iraq driving REVA MRAPs?
There are many REVA MRAP users around the world, see one below, security forces of Yemen.
Nigeria has South African ex-soldiers turned into casual mechanics and electricians, that's the only job we use your white-heads to do . A Reva was first seen driven by SA mercenaries in Iraq and they made it famous and then followed American special forces and so on, dummy. In fact, a Reva was marketed to the world by SA mercenaries. |

Wasted sperm I called you a dummy because a dummy will ask you one question over another even if he sees he was misinformed. A dummy will always try to make people look at "wrong" as if is "right". A dummy never gives up and will always draw people to his level and defeat them to that area. |

Their military budget is not even what it appears to be, It is made to be like that because they are currently in war. The military budget of SA during the bush war was way over $10 billion. |

No, the R5 isn't in service with no special forces. Your special forces roundly routed in the CAR all had the obsolete R4 rifles.
One grainy image proves nothing. The grainy image shows a soldier holding an R4 DMR. R5s had been in service with SADF long before your mother dropped your head on the ground. R4, R5 and R6 are all the same, the only difference is the barrel length, dummy. Perhaps, you mistaken everything with the new R4 as shown below. However, it will be in service from next year, special forces have started acquiring it already. It is far better than beryl. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/R5_assault_rifle
