President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic, said the Nigerian Army was formidable enough to crush the Boko Haram terrorist group. Buhari, who made this declaration after holding talks with Nigerien President Issoufou Mahamadou, asserted that the Nigerian Army, which had earned a good reputation globally, remained a virile fighting force. “I am four days in office today and we have already started the process of ending the insurgency,” he told journalists after meeting with his host. The president hinted that he had, at the over five hours’ meeting with heads of Nigeria’s Armed Forces and security agencies on Tuesday, taken time with the service chiefs to review ongoing operations against Boko Haram for better results. Buhari added, however, that because of the peculiarities of terrorism, the movement of terrorists across borders and the unconventional nature of the war against terror, Nigeria would continue to seek the support of neighbouring countries in its bid to overcome the militants. President expresses worry over influx of 150, 000 Nigerian refugees in Niger Republic He also expressed worry at the influx of refugees as a result of the insurgency, noting that there were over 150,000 displaced Nigerians in Niger. “Another issue of concern to us, which is closely associated with the insurgency in the region, is the influx of refugees and other displaced persons. We are aware that, currently, there are over 150,000 displaced persons comprising refugees and returnees taking refuge in various parts of Niger, " Buhari stated. According to him, he was in Niger Republic to seek more support from the country in bringing a quick end to the atrocities of Boko Haram, and would hold similar meetings with Chadian authorities after leaving Niamey today. Buhari further noted that Nigeria would also require the assistance of other nations and multi-lateral institutions to rebuild areas adversely affected by the insurgents and rehabilitate displaced persons. Earlier at the opening of bilateral talks between Nigeria and Niger earlier, President Buhari praised his host’s contributions to the ongoing multi- national effort against terrorism, insurgency and cross-border crimes. He said, “Permit me also to acknowledge the consistency with which the government and people of Niger Republic have stood beside Nigeria under all circumstances. I would like to convey the appreciation of Nigeria for the sacrifices by Niger in the ongoing efforts to counter the menace of the Boko Haram insurgency. “Niger Republic has, over the years, proved to be a reliable ally to Nigeria both at bilateral and multilateral levels. It is our hope and aspiration that this special relationship would be further consolidated during my administration. “My administration will bring new impetus and a renewed commitment to the efforts to wipe out the menace of the Boko Haram insurgents. As a first step, we have directed the relocation of the command post of the counter-insurgency operations to Maiduguri until such a time that the insurgency is completely defeated. “Our administration will work closely with governments of the affected states to continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the displaced persons and their host communities. The ultimate objective, however, remains to end the insurgency and facilitate the displaced persons’ return to their homes.” On his part, the president of Niger commended President Buhari for making Niger the first country he would visit after his inauguration. Mahamadou assured Buhari that Niger would continue to support Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram. “Your decision to move the military command of Nigeria to the North East has further strengthened our conviction that the war against terrorism will soon come to an end”, he said. Buhari also urged Nigerians to be patient with his administration, saying the task of rebuilding Nigeria will be a very difficult one. Speaking when he met with members of Nigerian community in Niger, he said, “As you are aware, our government is just coming on board and is still in the process of setting out appropriate modalities on how to actualize its agenda of revamping Nigeria, as contained in the APC manifesto on which basis we were elected. I urge you to exercise some patience as the task of rebuilding Nigeria is indeed an arduous one.” He listed the challenges his government intends to tackle in revamping Nigeria to include the challenges of insecurity, near economic collapse, pervasive corruption and power shortages. The president continued: “I want to reassure that we are going to tackle these challenges head-on. Nigerians will not regret that they have entrusted national responsibility to us. We must not succumb to hopelessness and defeatism. We can fix our problems. “However daunting the task to surmount these challenges may be, they are by no means insurmountable. There is now a national consensus that our chosen route to national development is democracy. To achieve our objectives, we must consciously work to improve the democratic system. “I want to reassure you that my government would be resolute in ensuring that our country’s name is raised higher, and we need all Nigerians, including those in the Diaspora, to partner with us.” http://leadership.ng/news/438284/our-military-will-take-down-bharam-pmb lalasticlala |

Multiple Nigerian and international news outlets are reporting that the nation has fired between 200-290 soldiers for alleged “cowardice” while conducting operations against jihadist terror group Boko Haram, a sacking numerous soldiers are protesting as unfair, as they were improperly armed and directed during said operations, they claim. The BBC reports that the Nigerian military has not confirmed the number of those expelled from the military over a video allegedly showing Nigerian soldiers fleeing a Boko Haram battle rather than engaging the enemy, but that the number could be anywhere between 200 and 4,500 by the time the purging of Nigeria’s armed forces is complete. The national website Naij suggests that the number has increased to 290 since the initial reports began circulating in Nigeria. BBC highlights one particular incident believed to be among the prime evidence for dismissing the soldiers: the fall of the second-largest town in Adamawa state, Mubi, in which soldiers actively fled the battleground when Boko Haram terrorists appeared. According to a soldier who tells the BBC he was present at the battle of Mubi, higher-ranking commanders ordered the soldiers to flee. “We weren’t given an opportunity to defend ourselves. I’ve spent 20 years in the service of the Nigerian army, I’ve never been accused of any offence,” he objected. They were ordered to flee, he claims, because they were insufficiently armed. One soldier speaking out and using his name, Aguloye Sunday, similarly told Nigeria’s Premium Times that the government had refused to properly arm the soldiers, leaving them at the mercy of Boko Haram, calling the charges against the soldiers “untrue, false and malicious.” “The bombs given to us were made in 1964,” he alleged, “they were expired, so we could not use them.” As for the conventional arms, “each of us was given five bullets, not five rounds, to fire. While in the forest, our biggest weapon was to cover just a distance of 400 meters, but our enemy had aircraft weapons that could cover a distance of more than 1 000 metres, aside other dangerous weapons.” Colonel Sani Usman of the Nigerian military told news outlet Naij only that “some” soldiers had been disciplined. “On disciplinary action being taken against some soldiers for cowardice and desertion in the face of enemies, especially as regards the fight against Boko Haram terrorists, most of the stories and figure being peddled are far from accurate,” he claimed, adding that court cases are unlikely in the eyes of the military. The dismissals follow months of criticism of the Nigerian army, particularly from neighboring Chad, which has been aiding the efforts against Boko Haram in order to contain its spread into their nation. Chadian President Idriss Deby described relations with the Nigerian army this month as “ regrettable” and urged the two nations “to work together” in order to defeat the terrorist group. After a major military initiative in the northern Sambisa Forest that resulted in the rescue of hundreds of women and children being held hostage by Boko Haram, it appears the group has begun to strengthen itself once again, possibly with the aid of foreign groups. Boko Haram changed its name officially this month to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) after pledging allegiance to that group. Video found in Sambisa Forest camps, however, seems to indicate the group is also working with Al Qaeda. Reuters reports footage “Boko Haram administering sharia judgments in front of a big crowd in a field stained with blood with a man speaking in Sudanese Arabic,” which suggests the presence of members of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (IQIM). Also this week, Boko Haram attacked the town of Gubio in Borno State, killing at least 37 civilians. The move suggests many of the terrorists forced to flee the Sambisa forest have begun looking to take over more territory to reestablish themselves. The governor of Gubio is encouraging citizens not to leave the town, so that rebuilding is possible and Boko Haram is denied a new stronghold. www.breitbart.com/national-security/2015/05/28/nigeria-fires-200-soldiers-for-cowardice-in-face-of-boko-haram-attacks/ Cc: lalasticlala |
In case of what? deebsman1:On Topic: Many people will bash me for saying this but in reality Nigeria need people like this in our administrative system (not the corrupt iweala ooo) because it's strange to see a woman so boastful in sight of imminent probe! |
FEW hours before the expiration of her tenure, the outgoing Minister of Finance and Coordinator of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has that she is not afraid of being probed by the President- elect, Muhammadu Buhari. Following allegations of official corruption, there has been strident calls for the incoming Buhari administration to probe the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan administration. But, the outgoing President has said that while he is not against such probe, it must extend to the administrations before his, stressing that anything such of that would be a witch-hunt. Responding to what she described as attack on her by Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, the minister, in a statement on Thursday May 28, 2015, Okonjo-Iweala said, “There is no substance in the wild allegations that money is missing from the account or that finances of the country under her watch have not been well managed.” “I have no reason to fear Buhari. Those who cannot adequately explain what they did with the resources of their states and are begging for bailout are those who should to be scared,” she stated. Okonjo-Iweala denied claims by Oshiomhole that she has been speaking out lately because of the fear of Buhari. “If there is any minister whose voice has been strong on the right issues over the past four years, it is Okonjo-Iweala,” she added. The minister said she has no apologies for insisting that a claim of N159 billion for forex differentials by the marketers out of a total bill of N200billion should go through an additional verification process, stressing that when over 80 per cent of a subsidy claim is made up of forex differentials and not the value of the amount of fuel supplied, the proper thing to do is to ensure that the country is not cheated. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/05/im-not-afraid-buharis-probe-okonjo-iweala/ lalasticlala |

Regional Representative for West Africa, United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR),Liz Ahua, has disclosed that 200,000 Nigerians are currently in Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Ahua who stated this in a press briefing in Bauchi yesterday said the refuges were sacked by insurgents activities that has ravaged the Northern region. She said the refuges are willing to return to Nigeria but the fear of uncertainty has prevented them. She added that these refuges are traumatized due to the activities of insurgency saying over five million people are traumatized. She said the Commission was so concern over the traumatized state of both the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and refugees in the neighboring countries. “We work with partners to support the refugee with education and medical facilities because they are no more living in their country of national; so we have to give them adequate support. We have the responsibility to support them by providing physical and legal protection for them. We have been providing capacity building to assist them and we are working on providing more shelter for them. We are proud of the host community for the care given to them in Bauchi.” “ We spoke with many of the IDPs and the women and children were crying due to hardship. They told us their needs which are education, shelter and health needs. Some of them came from Yobe, Adamawa, Borno among other states and they have to trek for more than two months to get to where they are camped.” “The women complained of education because their children are out of schools and they want them to go back to school. They also complained of school materials, furnitures to enable the children learn in a good environment. “They also complained of means of livelihood because many of them were into trade before they were displaced so the women need to be empower to be able to take care of their children,” she said. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/05/200000-nigerian-refuges-niger-chad-cameroon-unhcr/ Cc: obinoscopy, lalasticlala |

THE Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday fired what seemed to be another salvo at the state Governor-elect, Chief Nyesom Wike, ahead of the Friday’s inauguration. Amaechi, who declared that he would not forgive or settle the feud between him and Wike, unless justice was seen to have been done, had on Tuesday accused the governor-elect of being behind the deaths recorded in the state during the general elections. Wike had denied the allegation. The governor made this declaration during his 50th birthday thanksgiving service at the Corpus Christi Cathedral in Port Harcourt, while reacting to the plea by the Catholic Bishop of Port Harcourt Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Camillus Etokudoh, that both politicians (Amaechi and Wike) should reconcile their differences in the interest of the people. Amaechi, who agreed that the views of the bishop in a Catholic church should not be opposed, maintained that justice must come before forgiveness, adding that those that were killed during the general elections and their families must get justice. Amaechi expressed surprise that the bishop congratulated Wike on his victory during the governorship election in the state, even as he called on the church to join the All Progressives Congress in praying that the party reclaimed its mandate. He pointed out that the mandate of the APC in the state must be reclaimed at the election petition tribunal before any reconciliation could be embraced. “My Lordship talked about forgiveness. In the Catholic Church you don’t oppose the views of your bishop. His words represent an order. If you oppose him you may be barred from taking Holy Communion. “You are not a true Catholic if you don’t receive the Holy Communion. But Your Lordship, the same Catholic doctrine also states that justice comes before forgiveness. “All those that were killed during the last general elections must get justice. Their families must get justice. Our party, the All Progressives Congress, must get justice first at the petition election tribunal. Our mandate must be retrieved at the tribunal. “I am surprised that My Lordship congratulated Nyesom Wike here today. I am using this opportunity to call on the Church to join the APC in praying to God so that we can reclaim our mandate. “Reclaiming our mandate at the election petition tribunal will represent a measure of justice. We must seek justice before reconciliation,” the governor stressed. Amaechi, however, said that he was shocked by some of the people that betrayed him, adding that God will forgive them at the appropriate time. He thanked members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who, according to him, supported him without getting money from him. “I was shocked by some of the people that betrayed me. At the appropriate time, God will forgive them. Let me use this opportunity to thank members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for their support all through the crisis. I did not give them money to stand by me. I commend them for their sacrifice,” he said. He explained that the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mrs. Gesila Khan, had not given the APC the voter register, which the Independent National Electoral Commission used in conducting the last general elections in the state. Earlier, the Catholic Bishop, Etokudoh, had congratulated Wike for his electoral victory and urged him and Amaechi to settle their differences. “As for the outgoing governor and the incoming governor, I urge them to work together so that there will be peace. We need peace in Rivers State. “There can be no reconciliation without forgiveness. There will be no peace without reconciliation. So, it is time for the outgoing governor and the incoming governor to reconcile so that peace will return to Rivers State. No matter their differences, they should reconcile in the interest of peace,” Bishop Etokudoh, who was delivering a sermon at the event, added. The cleric described Amaechi as a courageous person, adding that the governor had touched many lives in the eight years that he was the chief executive of the state. Etokudoh, however, stated that though Amaechi performed creditably as a governor, some people still prefer to begrudge him. Among those at the occasion are Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; a former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; a former Governor of Rivers State, Chief Rufus Ada-George; a former Transport Minister, Alabo Graham-Douglas; and Kaduna State Governor-elect, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai. www.punchng.com/news/i-wont-forgive-wike-unless-justice-is-done-amaechi/ lalasticlala |

Not less than forty-four physically challenged persons in Kuchingoro community in Abuja Municipal Area council of the FCT have been presented with fifty simplified wheel chairs by Dr. Omanudhowho Kennedy, a Batch ‘B’ serving corps member in the FCT. The donation, which was part of the corps member’s personal project under the Community Development Service programmes of the NYSC scheme, was enhanced by Grace Hope International to make life more meaningful and easier to the beneficiaries. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Dr. Omanudhowho the initiator of the project, said the project was borne out of love and compassion he developed as a result of an ugly experience he encountered during one of the outreaches he participated in a community in Bayelsa State. He said the donation of the wheelchairs is the first phase of the project which would be followed by a one-week free medical, surgical, dental and optometry treatments in two rural settlements of Kuchigoro and Kabusa and other surrounding communities with about 40 health personnels participating. Dr. Kennedy expressed appreciation to NYSC management for providing the platform for him to carry out the project, as well as the Vision Centre, WOTCLEF and other groups and individuals who contributed immensely to the realization of the project. Earlier, Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumni, described the gesture as another milestone in the scheme’s social empowerment strategy aimed at enhancing the living standard of members of the host communities. The DG who was represented by the Director, Community Development Service and Special Projects, Bose Okakwu, said the project which is in line with one of the goals of the CDS, is highly commendable and worthy of emulation by other corps members. Also speaking, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, Olanipekun Alao, called for more support from the host communities to the corps members who he said are full of ideas and potentials that could transform societies if supported, even as he expressed optimism on the positive impact the gifts would have on the beneficiaries. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/05/nysc-member-empowers-44-physically-challenged-persons-fct/ |

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to nullify the Certificate of Return issued to Christian Abah for the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives at the forthcoming 8th National Assembly. Justice Adeniyi Ademola, delivering judgment in the suit, challenging Abah’s eligibility to stand for the election, held that the allegation of certificate forgery levelled against him by the plaintiff, Mr. Hassan Saleh, had been established to be true. Abah was said to have forged an Ordinary National Diploma certificate in Accountancy, purportedly obtained from the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, in 1985. Justice Ademola said his findings revealed that an earlier judgment of the National/State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Makurdi, delivered on September 6, 2011, and a letter by the Registrar of the polytechnic, Mr. Suleiman Buba, affirmed that the certificate presented by Abah to INEC was forged. The court ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, to immediately commence prosecution of Abah for forgery and perjury. Abah, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, had earlier been declared unopposed and elected being the only candidate presented for the March 28, 2015 election. The court, in his judgment, declared all the votes that accrued to him in the PDP’s primary, held on December 6, 2014, as wasted and also declared Saleh, who came second as the winner of the primary. He ordered INEC to issue a fresh Certificate of Return to Saleh. The court also ordered the incoming Speaker of the 8th National Assembly to swear in Saleh as the member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency. The court also berated the conduct of the counsel for PDP and Abah in the suit, Mr. S.I Ameh (SAN), for the frivolous applications and tactics to delay the hearing of the case. Justice Ademola therefore ordered that the processes filed in the suit and his judgment be served on the Nigerian Bar Association, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee with a view of taking appropriate sanctions against Ameh. The judge also imposed a N450,000 fine on the three defendants – the PDP, INEC and Abah in favour of the plaintiff. The court berated both the INEC and PDP for promoting “the culture of impunity” by their failure to disqualify Abah from participating in the election in view of the court judgment that had since 2011 affirmed that he (Abah) presented a forged certificate for the purpose of standing for an election. www.punchng.com/news/court-nullifies-benue-rep-elects-certificate-of-return-orders-prosecution/ Cc: lalasticlala |
A former Super Eagles Coach, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, on Wednesday expressed sympathy for Stephen Keshi, the Head Coach of the Super Eagles, over the selection of players for the team. Onigbinde told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that his pity for Keshi was necessitated by the low standard of the country’s leagues. He said the Nigeria Premier league, the Nigeria National league and the Nigeria Nationwide league were supposed to be the reservoir for the country’s national teams. Onigbinde added, “I have my pity for Keshi. Where does he get the players from? From where, tell me? What is the quality of our league matches today and that is why people are not watching our league matches. “In those days, if you hated Shooting Stars FC, you will want to watch Mudashiru Lawal, Awosu, Odegbami. Where are players of those qualities today, so what are we going there to watch? “Because we are not developing; the raw talents are there but there is no administrative structure to make us identify those players and polish them into stars.’’ www.punchng.com/news/i-sympathise-with-keshi-over-players-selection-onigbinde/ |
