The complex housing major government offices in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, is on fire. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but thick smokes has engulfed the building and surrounding ones. Workers in the building were seen scampering for safety while a good number of staff and visitors are trapped in the complex. Our correspondents say fire fighters have just arrived the scene. Captain Robert Haye's Profile By Ejikeme Omenazu, Lagos Born on May 13, 1935, in Benin City, Edo State, Capt. Hayes attended St. Patrick Catholic School, Sapele, Delta State and Government College, Warri (now Government College, Ugheli) also in Delta State. He picked up interest in flying while watching the Royal Marine officers on duty in Sapele in the 50s and desired to join the Royal Air Force. In 1955, he became the first Nigerian to be certified a pilot, five years before independence in 1960. In May 1955, at the age of 20 years, Capt. Hayes became the first Nigerian to get certified as a pilot with the Commercial Pilot License and returned to Nigeria in June 1955 to join the West Africa Airways Corporation, WAAC. Between 1956 and 1960, the young Nigerian pilots in WAAC were allowed to fly as co-pilots on the local routes, along with the British and Europeans pilots. They were flying the B170, B114 and B104 aircraft. In 1962, Robert Hayes and Rufus Orimoloye were sent for the Senior Commercial Pilot Licence training where they were made to fly the DC3 aircraft. While in training, they were promoted captains. When they returned home, they were asked to go for further training on F27 aircraft, which the country’s airline, Nigeria Airways, had acquired. The Nigerian pilots were able to start flying the international routes eventually in 1962 when the Nigeria Airways was formed. Captain Hayes also became the first Nigerian pilot to fly into New York and served as acting managing director of the defunct national carrier, Nigeria Airways. Many pilots at that time passed through the supervision of Captain Bob Hayes. He retired in 1990 after attaining the mandatory 35 years in service. He was the first Nigerian pilot to attain that age in service. He worked on contract as a training captain and examiner, thereafter. Captain Hayes flew for 40 years in control and four years on contract consulting for Nigeria Airways. One of his younger pilots in Nigeria Airways who rose to become Director of Operations, Capt. Dele Ore, had this to say of Capt Hayes: “Capt. Bob Hayes is my respected senior and a motivator. “He went through a lot while fighting for us his younger pilots. He is a well respected airman. I wish him a happy birthday.’’ Experts believe that his was the golden generation of pilots in the country at a time Nigerian pilots were rated some of the best in the world. In his time, Nigeria witnessed fewer number of air incidents and accidents because the adherence of pilots at the time to standard operating procedures spelt out by both the civil aviation authority in the country and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). NIGERIA’S first ever pilot, Capt. Robert Emmanuel Hayes, turned 80 on Wednesday May 13, 2015. He has, however, has chosen to have a low-key celebration, only with a church service, in London, where he is currently based, to mark the day. Send your birthday wishes Cc: lalasticlala politricks holatin Seun |

Chinese construction company Sinotec has completed a major power project in Nigeria which links the capital city, and expected to contribute immensely to the country’s national grid. The project, which included the construction of a 330 kilo volts (kv) new-built transformer substation, 132kv substation extension, 330kv transmission line and 132kv tubular poles, was commissioned on Monday by Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo. Designed to be one of the biggest substations in the West African country, the project, located in Gwagwalada city of Abuja, was completed within 14 months after the site work commenced, Sinotec’s deputy managing director, Bu Songbo, said at the commissioning ceremony. “We have completed many projects in the past 10 years (in Nigeria). However, this is the only one which covered so many types of work scope,” the company manager said. Chinedu Nebo, Nigeria’s minister of power, described the project, executed under the National Integrated Power Project scheme, as “a very critical link in the national grid” of Africa’s most populous country. He said the Niger Delta Power Holding Company of Nigeria, which constructed the facility through Sinotec, will be in its second phase of the project, focus mainly on the construction of hydro power plants in northern Nigeria to assure a mixed grid distribution of power. “All these will contribute immensely to the national grid,” said Sambo, noting he commissioned a similar power project six days ago in the north central state of Benue. www.punchng.com/news/chinese-firm-completes-major-power-project-in-nigeria/ lalasticlala |

Divide and Rule in play.! |
Abuja – The European Union (EU) on Saturday urgedthe President-elect, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that Nigerians enjoyed the democracy dividends. The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Michel Arrion, made the call at the Europe Day 2015 in Abuja. Arrion explained that democracy meant nothing to the common man except it led to the improvement in their standards of living. “But democracy only makes meaning to the common man to the extent that it delivers good governance, creates opportunities and improves the quality of living. “Nigeria is rich, but Nigerians are poor. The incoming administration will have a lot to do in this regard. “It must ensure that Nigeria’s massive population is galvanised into a formidable productive force that will generate wealth that is equally or rather equitably shared among all citizens,” he said. According to Arrion, as the new government comes on stream, the world will want to see a Nigeria with the basic freedoms that distinguish democratic societies. “The government must ensure that the basic freedoms including economic rights and welfare are not the exclusive preserve of a privileged few. The EU envoy reminded Buhari of his promises before and after his election to pursue three priority objectives. He said the first objective set by the President-elect was “to swiftly end the insurgency in the North East and restore peace and stability. According to him, the second is to eradicate corruption, while the third is to put policies in place to put Nigeria’s economy on a proper footing. He said that these goals set for the incoming government match closely the European Union’s vision for the country. “Let me add a fourth objective that is very important for the European Union: regional integration,” he said. Arrion said the EU strongly believed that peace and stability, as well as the economic development of Nigeria were achievable. According to him, they will be better achieved within the framework of a closer and deeper co-operation of Nigeria with its neighbours in West and Central Africa. “It is in that global context that the partnership between Nigeria and the EU is taking place. “I am delighted to state that Nigeria and EU do share very strong relations of mutual trust and partnership. “And I am very happy to confirm the excellent quality of our local political and policy dialogue between the 21 European Ambassadors and High Commissioner and the Government of Nigeria.” He commended Nigeria and Nigerians for the success of the general elections, saying the last three months were very special for Nigerian citizens. “We are happy that Nigeria has got it right, and look forward to other African countries following its good example,” he said. The EU envoy commended outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan for gracefully “accepting the outcome of the election so that his country can move on.” www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/nigeria-is-rich-but-nigerians-are-poor-eu-tells-buhari/ lalasticlala |
