Crime3 Men Died After Consuming 'OGOGORO' In Ondo; Seller Flees! by msmon(op): 1:47pm On May 14, 2015
Akure—DETECTIVES from Ondo State Police Command are working round the clock to unravel the mysterious death of three persons after consuming a local gin, popularly known as ogogoro at Oka Motor Park in Ondo town, Ondo State.

This is coming as the state government said last week that it had curtailed the outbreak of a strange disease which caused the death of 23 persons at Irele area of the state.

The government said the 23 who died at Irele consumed poisonous ethanol and banned the consumption of ogogoro across the state.
Vanguard gathered that the deceased persons in this latest incident included a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in the park, an electrician and another person working in the motor park.

It was learned that the three persons consumed the local gin at the park and immediately complained of stomach upset. Other members of the union reportedly applied local herbs to calm them down, but they soon became unconscious.

An eyewitness said they died before they could be rushed to a nearby hospital in the town, adding that the deaths were mysterious as other members of the union usually drank the same ogogoro.

Seller flees

Vanguard gathered that the seller of the ogogoro had fled the park for fear of arrest by policemen, who reportedly stormed the motor park to investigate the incident.

The eyewitness said consum-ption of ogogoro at motor parks by members of NURTW was a daily occurrence.
It was also gathered that the deceased had been buried according to Muslim rites without undergoing any autopsy to confirm the real cause of their death.

Contacted, the police image maker, Wole Ogodo, said: “When I called the DPO of the Enuowa Police Division in Ondo, he said nobody had reported the case at the police station, that they too heard it as rumour in the town.

“We have commenced investigation and after the investigation we shall let the whole world know what actually happened to the said three persons.”

We ‘re in control— Health Commissioner

It would be recalled that the Health Commissioner, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, last weekend said the state government has successfully curtailed the ethanol poison at Irele area of the state.

He said the sensitization efforts of government had yielded results on the consumption of the local gin.

The commissioner added that both National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and SON had intervened to standardize the brewing of the local gin and regulate it’s production.

Adeyanju said: “Those that died as a result of the consumption of the local gin are the chronic drinkers, while those that just tasted it have since regained their sights.”

According to him, a high concentration of the ethanol poison was discovered in the system of those that died as a result of its consumption.
Adeyanju pointed out that the ban on the consumption of ogogoro in the state still subsists, while government would deal decisively with those who flouted the directive.

Captain Robert Haye's Profile

By Ejikeme Omenazu, Lagos

Born on May 13, 1935, in Benin City, Edo State,
Capt. Hayes attended St. Patrick Catholic School,
Sapele, Delta State and Government College,
Warri (now Government College, Ugheli) also in
Delta State.

He picked up interest in flying while watching the
Royal Marine officers on duty in Sapele in the 50s
and desired to join the Royal Air Force.

In 1955, he became the first Nigerian to be
certified a pilot, five years before independence in
1960.

In May 1955, at the age of 20 years, Capt. Hayes
became the first Nigerian to get certified as a
pilot with the Commercial Pilot License and
returned to Nigeria in June 1955 to join the West
Africa Airways Corporation, WAAC.

Between 1956 and 1960, the young Nigerian
pilots in WAAC were allowed to fly as co-pilots on
the local routes, along with the British and
Europeans pilots. They were flying the B170,
B114 and B104 aircraft.

In 1962, Robert Hayes and Rufus Orimoloye were
sent for the Senior Commercial Pilot Licence
training where they were made to fly the DC3
aircraft.

While in training, they were promoted captains.
When they returned home, they were asked to go
for further training on F27 aircraft, which the
country’s airline, Nigeria Airways, had acquired.

The Nigerian pilots were able to start flying the
international routes eventually in 1962 when the
Nigeria Airways was formed.

Captain Hayes also became the first Nigerian pilot
to fly into New York and served as acting
managing director of the defunct national carrier,
Nigeria Airways.

Many pilots at that time passed through the
supervision of Captain Bob Hayes.

He retired in 1990 after attaining the mandatory
35 years in service.

He was the first Nigerian pilot to attain that age
in service.

He worked on contract as a training captain and
examiner, thereafter.

Captain Hayes flew for 40 years in control and
four years on contract consulting for Nigeria Airways.

One of his younger pilots in Nigeria Airways who
rose to become Director of Operations, Capt. Dele
Ore, had this to say of Capt Hayes: “Capt. Bob
Hayes is my respected senior and a motivator.

“He went through a lot while fighting for us his
younger pilots. He is a well respected airman. I
wish him a happy birthday.’’

Experts believe that his was the golden
generation of pilots in the country at a time
Nigerian pilots were rated some of the best in the
world.

In his time, Nigeria witnessed fewer number of air
incidents and accidents because the adherence of
pilots at the time to standard operating procedures spelt out by both the civil aviation authority in the country and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

FamilyNo Girl Should Be Married Before 17 –aisha Buhari by msmon(op): 11:56am On May 13, 2015
THE wife of Nigeria’s President-elect, Aisha
Buhari, has said that no girl should be married before age 17.

According to online reports Aisha stated this
while speaking to Channels TV at the sideline of
the Global Women Conference held in Buenos
Aires, Argentina.

She reportedly said: “We have heard so much
from the Ministers of Women affairs from
different countries.

“We are trying to tally it with what is happening
in Nigeria, to find out how we are lacking and in
which aspect of women affairs that we are lacking
and the ones that we have gone ahead. I think, so
far, it is quite encouraging.

“We just need to put everything in practice than
being in theory. If the government can stand up
and say every girl child must attend basic
primary and secondary school education before
getting married.

“I think nobody, no girl should be married before
the age of 17 because if you really attend
secondary school, you will have to be like 16 and
17 and I think by the time you are 18- 20, its
quite a moderate time of having a child.

Science/TechnologyChinese Firm Completes Major Power Project In Nigeria - Punch by msmon(op): 10:12pm On May 12, 2015
Chinese construction company Sinotec has
completed a major power project in Nigeria which
links the capital city, and expected to contribute
immensely to the country’s national grid.

The project, which included the construction of a 330 kilo volts (kv) new-built transformer substation,
132kv substation extension, 330kv transmission line and 132kv tubular poles, was commissioned on
Monday by Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo.

Designed to be one of the biggest substations in the West African country, the project, located in
Gwagwalada city of Abuja, was completed within 14
months after the site work commenced, Sinotec’s
deputy managing director, Bu Songbo, said at the
commissioning ceremony.

“We have completed many projects in the past 10
years (in Nigeria). However, this is the only one
which covered so many types of work scope,” the
company manager said.

Chinedu Nebo, Nigeria’s minister of power, described the project, executed under the National Integrated Power Project scheme, as “a very critical link in the national grid” of Africa’s most populous country.

He said the Niger Delta Power Holding Company of
Nigeria, which constructed the facility through
Sinotec, will be in its second phase of the project,
focus mainly on the construction of hydro power
plants in northern Nigeria to assure a mixed grid
distribution of power.

“All these will contribute immensely to the national
grid,” said Sambo, noting he commissioned a similar power project six days ago in the north central state of Benue.

• How we deceived police, by accomplice

By CHRISTOPHER OJI

A notorious armed robber has regretted
coming to Lagos to operate.
The suspect, Hamzat (aka Babalawo/ herbalist) and two others who were being interrogated at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SAS) of the Lagos State Police Command said he had left Lagos before he was lured back by their gang leader, Emeka, simply called Mopol.

“I am a native doctor. I inherited the powers from
my late father. He died in 2011 but he taught me
how to cure general sicknesses. I was an armed
robber in Ikorodu. My gang was doing very well
until recently when SARS started dealing ruthlessly with us. Well, about four months ago, I was at newspapers stand in Ikorodu when I saw a story about the Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti, warning armed robbers to leave Lagos or be dealt with.

“I was afraid the man was serious. So, I told my
guys that we should relocate because, it is only
the person that is alive that would be talking of
money. We all came to Lagos for money. I am
from Oyo State. Well, Emeka (aka Mopol) deceived
me, by telling me that he was a driver to one Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). He told
me that the DIG would intervene whenever we run
into problem.

“I refused initially, but because, I have seen him in
police uniform and with a police identity card, I
believed him. I came back to Lagos. I would have
continued being a native doctor. I have a powerful
shrine in my compound, but because people don’t
patronize native doctors again, I was forced into
advance fee fraud (419). I collected money for
rituals. I collected between N500,000 and
N700,000. After receiving the money from my
victims, I took them to my shrine where I
positioned my boy in one corner. I told my victim
to ask the oracle whatever he or she wanted, and
my boy who spoke as the oracle, would give my
victims stringent conditions like, “you must bring
five pidgeons and sprinkle their blood on the
shrine, then the person would go.

“I was making money from the 419 deal until it
seemed people started discovering my antics,
that was why I went back to Mopol. My trouble
started.

“It was Mopol who sent me to collect a stolen car
from an armed robber. I did not know it was a set
up by the police. So, it was when I went to pick
the car that the police arrested me.

“I am angry because I had spent time at Kirikiri
Prisons in Lagos, Mopol who was sponsoring our
gang should have known better rather than luring
me back to Lagos. If I had remained in Oyo, I would not have been in this mess,” Hamzat said.

Mopol said Hamzat should stop blaming anybody
for his predicament. “We were all armed robbers
and everybody should know that whatever we
sow, so shall we reap. After all, I was also arrested
when I went to Shagamu to collect a snatched
vehicle from him.

“He should know that I meant well for him. I was
trying to help him. Everybody knows me as a
Mopol. I am a driver to a DIG (names withheld) I
have a police identity card, which I flashed at
policemen at roadblocks. I wore police uniforms
too. It was difficult for the police to know whether
I was a policeman or not. The thing that was
amusing was that each time we were on
operation, the police would see us and they would
salute me and still pay me complements.”

The state police spokesman, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu,
said three members of the gang were arrested
while efforts were on to arrest others.

CrimeSelling Banned Drug Is Big Business; It Enables Me Marry 3 Wives – Suspect by msmon(op): 6:38am On May 12, 2015
Niger State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 702.6 kilogrammes of drugs between January and last month. A suspect admitted that selling banned drug is big business for him. He said with the proceeds, he married three wives.

The Commander, Mr. Joseph Iweajuanwa, told Crime Watch Today in Minna, that 638.87 kilogrammes of the seizure were cannabis, 11.7kilogrammes were dizapham, 23.03 kilogrammes were tranagol while 29.26 kilogrammes were cough syrup with codeine.

He said a total of 526 kilogrammes of the drugs were seized in March in Kontagora. According to the NDLEA boss, the agency secured four convictions out of the 26 suspects.

Iweanjunwa also disclosed that a suspect, Abdullahi Aliyu, is cooling his heels at the Minna headquarters of the agency over allegations of selling banned drugs. He said he resorted to dealing in drugs when his efforts to join the Army failed.

The suspect, who was arrested by NDLEA operatives, said the business has enabled him to marry three wives.

He was one of the suspects allegedly dealing in chloroform, a banned substance, across Niger State. The drug variously called ‘suck and die’, ‘suku dai’ or ‘soku daiye’ is said to be used mostly by youths to make them high.

Aliyusaid he was aware that the business was illegal, but it provided him with regular money with which he takes care of his family.

“I know one day I will be caught, but I can’t leave it because that is where I got money to feed my wife and my children”

Iweanjunwa said six youths have reportedly died while inhaling the substance, pointing out that the people of Paiko went into spontaneous jubilation at the arrest of Abdullahi.

According to the NDLEA boss, 13 litres of the substance was found with the suspect who claimed that he was supplied by Yakubu Lawan, who is also in the NDLEA net over similar allegation.

PoliticsNigeria Is Rich But Nigerians Are Poor, EU Tells Buhari by msmon(op): 5:05pm On May 09, 2015
Abuja – The European Union (EU) on Saturday urgedthe President-elect, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu

Buhari to ensure that Nigerians enjoyed the
democracy dividends.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr
Michel Arrion, made the call at the Europe Day 2015
in Abuja.

Arrion explained that democracy meant nothing to
the common man except it led to the improvement in their standards of living.

“But democracy only makes meaning to the common man to the extent that it delivers good governance, creates opportunities and improves the quality of living.

“Nigeria is rich, but Nigerians are poor. The incoming administration will have a lot to do in this regard.

“It must ensure that Nigeria’s massive population is
galvanised into a formidable productive force that
will generate wealth that is equally or rather
equitably shared among all citizens,” he said.

According to Arrion, as the new government comes
on stream, the world will want to see a Nigeria with
the basic freedoms that distinguish democratic
societies.

“The government must ensure that the basic
freedoms including economic rights and welfare are
not the exclusive preserve of a privileged few.
The EU envoy reminded Buhari of his promises before and after his election to pursue three priority
objectives.

He said the first objective set by the President-elect
was “to swiftly end the insurgency in the North East
and restore peace and stability.

According to him, the second is to eradicate
corruption, while the third is to put policies in place
to put Nigeria’s economy on a proper footing.

He said that these goals set for the incoming
government match closely the European Union’s
vision for the country.

“Let me add a fourth objective that is very important for the European Union: regional integration,” he said.

Arrion said the EU strongly believed that peace and
stability, as well as the economic development of
Nigeria were achievable.

According to him, they will be better achieved within the framework of a closer and deeper co-operation of Nigeria with its neighbours in West and Central Africa.

“It is in that global context that the partnership
between Nigeria and the EU is taking place.

“I am delighted to state that Nigeria and EU do share very strong relations of mutual trust and partnership.

“And I am very happy to confirm the excellent quality of our local political and policy dialogue between the 21 European Ambassadors and High Commissioner and the Government of Nigeria.”

He commended Nigeria and Nigerians for the success of the general elections, saying the last three months were very special for Nigerian citizens.

“We are happy that Nigeria has got it right, and look
forward to other African countries following its good
example,” he said.

The EU envoy commended outgoing President
Goodluck Jonathan for gracefully “accepting the
outcome of the election so that his country can move on.”
